Shift key not working - usual fixes not working

Hi there, I'm sure many of you have heard of this problem before and I've had it many a time before but at this time, I'm stumped.
The shift key isn't working to constrain proportions etc. in Illustrator. I have no (nor have had any) microsoft office programs open. I have trashed the preferences and restarted. It is not a keyboard issue.
Any other ideas?

Both of you are having an unfortunate issue you can help the forum folk by telling us something about your system and hardware and applications you have install.
I can tell you on both the mac and Windows platform there are a couple of plug ins and third party software that might cause this I think one was called Zume or Zune but there were a couple.
Quicken of course and there is another popular software on the Windows platform as well.
But I can only guess with the no information about the system. You should always give the most amount of information and least amount of conjecture as possible.
Of  course one of the most common thing to try is to reset the preferences.

  • Stubborn Darwin/BSD boot, usual fixes not working

I installed 10.3.2 to a Powerbook G3 Pismo. While downloading the 10.3.9 update, it froze hard at 73% done, could not access Finder nor force-quit, and when i restarted (via keyboard restart command), it booted in to Darwin/BSD. I've tried the fixes in this topic

but even with a Safe Boot it goes to Darwin, and it returned to Darwin after a install-disk startup/run of Disk Utility showed HD to be ok.
It dismayed me to see the hard drive described as "10.3.9" in the Install disk's Start Up Disk window... the update hadn't finished downloading. Could this be the problem? Am i stuck with erasing and reinstalling the disk? That'll mean reinstalling 9.2 first, too, since i want a bootable copy of it on the drive... arg

    Hi LisaJoy,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
This has happened to me before, my brother wanted to use my computer so he restarted it. Anyways, you will need to do a clean install because you have part of both systems. Just for clarification, you were installing the system update. Downloading is putting it on your computer, installing is incorporating it. This causes a conflict with the startup. I suggest backing up you hard drive using your install disc (Disk Utility) and then doing a clean install. I would also recommend bring it to your local Apple Store. This happened to my iBook G3 and I brought it there because I didn't have a external drive big enough. They can also install the system software again.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS You can also do an Archive and Install, but I am not completely positive.

Screen stuck on gray, used shift key and my screen appears with MacBook Pro and not the recovery option. Please help!

    Hi ..
Shift key boots into Safe Mode, not Recovery.
This only works on a Mac running v10.7 Lion or later.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery
If you can't boot into Recovery Mode, help here >   Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

I tried rolling back the drivers for the keyboard, as well as changing to the US version of the keyboard, nothing has helped.

okay first problem is, my warranty was due to expire, so i brought an extension, and nothing has happened whatsoever on those regards, secondly, i ran a keyboard test, and i found out that it wasnt only the four six and right shift key which was now no longer working, but also the f2, f10, f11, f12,
I have used a external keyboard, which works :D but it annoying to use that when the whole point of a laptop is to have the inbuilt keyboard,

  • Xorg - SHIFT key bugs out randomly after TV-hardware is connected

I'm on Xfce4. When I hold down left SHIFT key and press some other keys, after a while the SHIFT key may "unregister" itself. What I mean is, it stops working as if I had released it, although I'm still pressing it down. Ie I'm suddenly writing lower-case again and stuff. This behaviour is application-independant apparently.
I tried running 'showkey' and it correctly reported pressing+releasing of the SHIFT key (keycode 42) when I actually physically pressed and released it. It did NOT report release of the SHIFT key when it in fact stopped working. So it doesn't seem to be a keyboard hardware problem or something.
The right SHIFT key (showkey says keycore 54 for this one) seems to work correctly though (but it's not really a comfortable work-around..).
Is there maybe a trick that could be used as a workaround, to somehow switch the right and left shiftkey's key codes? Maybe that could "fix" it. >:)
I had a look at xmodmap, but that shows entirely different "keycodes" for SHIFT keys so I'm a bit stumped:
    $ xmodmap -pk
..for "keycode 42" it had this line:
    42 0x0067 (g) 0x0047 (G) 0x0067 (g) 0x0047 (G) 0x03bf (eng) 0x03bd (ENG) 0x03bf (eng) 0x03bd (ENG)
..and for left shift key it had "50" in the "keycode" column:
    50 0xffe1 (Shift_L) 0x0000 (NoSymbol) 0xffe1 (Shift_L) 0x0000 (NoSymbol) 0xffe1 (Shift_L)
    Anyway, I tried out https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmodmap:
    xmodmap -pke > ~/.Xmodmap
..then edited that file and changed the Shift_L (50) and Shift_R (62) lines, and did
    xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap
..and my X froze up completely, not even registering mouse clicks, might wanna correct the Wiki there^^.
After a reboot, my xmodmap -pke showed the two lines swapped as intended though - but 'showkey' still shows keycode 42 for left and 54 for right, so swapping didn't work here.
Funny thing is, now after a fresh reboot I seem unable to reproduce the bug, so I'll wait and see what happens I guess.
Now I have read about people getting a bug where SHIFT key is suddenly _pressed_ on its own, unlike my prob where it is released, and those people always write that it happens when a TV card is connected, and that it is detected as "keyboard" according to X0.log.
So I just connected my usual bunch of USB stuff that I had disconnected earlier just while that reboot happened after which my problem didn't surface.
    My X0.log:

Now I'm wondering, my webcam gets detected as "keyboard" (id 14) ^^' well and so does my Arduino, but that's natural for Leonardo models.
I started up the webcam, so the uvc modules are now loaded, but still I'm now unable to reproduce the bug for some reason. With either SHIFT key. Well that's good sort of, but then again, not so good to track what causes it when it happens And why does X think that webcams and tv  cards are keyboards?
Will post again when the bug surfaces again I guess.
Ok, after plugging in a usb-tv box, the bug started happening again, except this time it's the rigth shift key that doesnt work correctly, while the left shift key seems fine.
So it seems the xmodmap change worked, although showkey still shows 42 for left and 54 for right.
This might do as a workaround for now, although someone should figure out why tv cards (and tv usb boxes in my case) mess up the shift key in Xorg.
Apparently the IR-receiver part of my tv-box was recognized as "keyboard":

Can I somehow find out which modules were loaded when I plugged it in so I can unload those?
    Also, I tried
    $ lsmod |grep dvb
    dvb_usb_cinergyT2 6645 2147483647
    dvb_usb 15171 1 dvb_usb_cinergyT2

    $ rmmod dvb_usb_cinergyT2
rmmod: ERROR: Module dvb_usb_cinergyT2 is in use
but I don't have any media player running anymore, so why is the module in use and how do I see by what it is in use? Forced removal via rmmod -f worked by the way. Then I was able to remove the other two dvb_usb_ modules, and usbcore and i2c_core disappeared automatically.. but the bug still occurs! Any way to find out which other modules were possibly loaded, or what was done by the system, when I plugged in the tv box?

Do you have the 3 year Applecare? If so, you could try calling Applecare and see if they can help you resolve this over the phone. If not, be sure to get this problem documented with a case number before your 1 year warranty is up. If this has just been a constant hassle, you could ask to talk to Customer Relations.
It sounds like you may have some hardware problems with the keyboard and the trackpad, which could be causing at least some of the problems. Any chance of getting to an Apple store to have it looked at, or would you have to send it in?
    Good luck!

  • Opening an application while pressing the shift key

Recently, Microsoft Word 2011 failed to open and showed the message, "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close." I followed troubleshooting instructions on the Microsoft website. Nothing cured the problem, but creating a new user account did enable Word 2011 to open normally. That seemed to imply that "a corrupt user account" was causing the problem. I could not find any instructions about how to repair that, but at some point I came across the suggestion to "hold the shift key down and click on the Word icon in the dock." I did this and Word opened normally in my account. After this, Word opened normally without holding down the shift key. Apparently this fixed the problem.
My question is, what does pressing the shift key do while you open an application? What's different? Why did it work? What's special about the shift key in this situation?
    Thanks.

It may be something specific to Word/Office. Individual applications may accept different launch arguments passed to them via key combinations, such as holding the Option key when launching iTunes to invoke the option for choosing the library to use.

  • Apple Mac mini g4 with Apple Pro Keyboard shift key stuck on

    Hey guys,
My mac mini g4 with Apple Pro keyboard has it's shift key stuck on and will not disable, this happened after I cleaned the keys with a "magic eraser" and is probably water damage, but when it is plugged into a PC the shift key is off and can be toggled as should be. Any help will be appericiated and if I can fix this it will save the faithful keyboard. Thanks in advance!

Thank you chorleyman! I just need a cheap platform for Logic to run, I'm not an advanced user, just to play for my soul. I'm usually using Windows based platforms, that's why I was confused about this particular model.
So if it looks good I think I will order this hardware next week.
If anyone have any more thoughts about the topic, please feel free to comment here! Thank you!

  • InDesign CC Shift Key not working

Normally I'd just hold the shift key down to resize an image or object in InDesign CC to constrain its proportions. Lately when I try to resize an image, the shift key doesn't do anything anymore. It no longer holds the proportions of the image box. Is there a way to fix this problem or is there a new tool that replaces the hot key shortcut? Transform > Scale is taking way too much time to resize an image to the proper size I need it to be.
Any and all help is very appreciated.
    -Jon

I was having this problem as well, within indesign CC 2014 only, not photoshop or illustrator. Virus or firewall can interfere with key modifiers. I have webfoot virus software. When I turn it off temporarily the shift key constrains angles and draws straight lines again as usual.  There may be a better workaround, but this works for me, though I have to turn the virus software off and on.
I have a laptop that I haven't installed webroot on yet and it runs the same version of indesign cc 2014 as my main mac… there was never an issue with the shift key on the laptop.
    Good luck!

  • 'SHIFT' key on Satellite Pro C660 is not working

    G'day,
I have a minor problem with my Toshiba Satellite Pro C660 notebook computer.
Unfortunately I had to remove the keyboard and in doing so dislodged the
flimsy plug connecting it to the computer.
The 'Shift' key has refused to work since. All the other keys work as usual.
The only problem is the 'Shift' key not working.
I have tried gently moving the plug but made no difference so now have to
    use a USB keyboard.
Can you please help with suggestions to solve this problem?
    Thank you for your time.
    Cheers,
    Sunrap.

I have fixed my problem with the often used right shift key from my laptop computer by gently lift of the cap with a small screw driver and put a very small paper ball inside the hollow plastic tube.

  • Enter and shift keys not working. HELP!!!

A few days ago my mouse started behaving erratically all of a sudden. It would move by itself, click apps, and switch tabs rapidly all on its own. I've had this computer for over 2 years and this has never happened before. Restarting and rebooting into safe mode didn't work, but one user suggested a PRAM reset and that fixed the mouse problem. However, my enter and shift key on the right side do not work now (this is much less annoying than the mouse problem, but still very inconvenient!). Restarting the computer and doing another PRAM reset doesn't work unfortunately. I also used the keyboard viewer to confirm that all but those two keys work. I don't think the issue is with keyboard lint because both keys worked fine before I tried the reset. Booting up in safe mode also doesn't fix the problem. It would be great if I could find a way to fix this here since I won't be able to go to an Apple genius bar until December!

    Hello sandi3s,
The troubleshooting detailed below may help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's keyboard.
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

    Cheers,
    Allen

  • MacBook stuck with shift key enabled and numbers not working - even the keyboard app in languages wont type lowercase nor numbers?!  Anyone know whats up?  no spillage...cant understand why the keyboard app wont do anything.

Anyone have a clue?  I can understand the keyboard being broke / shift key being stuck but why in the world would I not be able to type the numbers on the language keyboard app on the operating system?  Numbers show up on the app but when I press them I still get the special characters like #^&#* and it wont type lower case. Nothing has ever been spilt, just stopped working one day.  Rebooted from Time Capsule restore dated a month ago and its still doing it. (problem started two weeks ago).  Only way to get lower case or numbers to actually show up is the copy and paste.
    Any help would be amazing!
    Details on computer:  13 inch MacBook6, 1  (Late 2009) / Intel Core 2 DUO /  2.26GHZ / 2GB /  Memory running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

If you can afford it, I would recommend replacing the topcase and keyboard as Apple suggests. If like me, you can't afford it or are open to a hack fix, then read on.
    The problem
Yesterday, a little water spilt on my 13" MBP keyboard. I turned it around immediately, drained out the water and used tissue to suck it all up but the keyboard was still acting funny. I turned it off and left it out in the sun for a couple of hours and turned it on again but problems remained. Like Rickdubya, my warranty had run out just a month ago and I knew Apple would not cover this under warranty. I tried to clean the shift keys and left it overnight with some rice on them with hopes that the moisture might get sucked out. Nothing worked. (The rice bit is an urban legend that seems to work with some electronics). Went to the Apple Store this morning and was told that they wouldn't even take out the key and clean it, and that the entire top case would have to be replaced. A total bill of 156 Euros which I cannot afford. I had a USB keyboard that would let me use the Mac for the moment so I decided to try to work out a fix.
    Symptoms
    - Boots in safe mode everytime (which I later found out was because the shift key is pressed)
    - Cannot login because password is in lower case or has numbers
    - Cannot boot in super user mode and try to disable keys or override password as some commands won't work in uppercase (I wouldn't recommend this anyway because its super user mode)
    - All text is in caps and numbers are symbols as though shift key is always pressed
    - Audio doesn't work
    - Keyboard viewer would not always show the shift key pressed. The key seemed to get pressed at random
    Fix
    1. Hold the Option button down on boot to bypass the Safe Mode ensure a normal boot
    2. At the login screen, plug in a USB keyboard and enter your password to login
    3. Change your password to one that uses all caps and no numbers
    4. Download and install KeyRemap4MacBook .
    5. Use a combination of the functionalities of the Keyboard Viewer and KeyRemap4MacBook to figure out which shift key is the problem. In my case, I found out that it was only my left shift key.
    6. Disable the left/right shift key on KeyRemap4MacBook and click on the 'Reload XML' button to make that take effect.
If only one shift key was the problem, then you are done. If both shift keys were shorted, then its likely other keys are too. In which case you should probably just replace the entire thing. If you think other keys are not affected, then you can use KeyRemap4MacBook itself to remap the shift functionality to a lesser used key like the Left Option key.
    7. Under System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items , add KeyRemap4MacBook as an application that should start on login. This will ensure that your disable/remap of the shift key is active everytime you login.
    Usage change/Things to remember
    1. Remember to hold down the Option key everytime the computer boots or reboots to bypass safe mode. The fix above is at the software level. The key is physically still shorted at the hardware level and will affect boot.
    2. Remember that at the login screen, the disable/remap is not active. So your password now has to be all caps and only letters.
As soon as I can save some money, I will get my topcase and keyboard replaced but until then this solution works great with minimal change. Hope this helps!
