Shift key "sticks"

After updating to 1.1.1, I have noticed that when I log into my schools network via WiFi, that the shift key "sticks". It only happens in Safari, not in texts, emails, or Notes, and only when I'm entering a username or password of any sort. I know that its not the Caps Lock, as I have this feature turned off. I was just wondering if others were having the same problem, or if it was just me, and if there were any solutions.

I haven't noticed that my shift key sticks, but I have noticed some qurkie things since the new update. Like the clock for example... I've had more clock queer-trons the last couple days since the update than I did before the update (all of a week). All the sudden show wrong times (off by like hours), changing from 24 hour clock to 12 hour clock on it's own, ect. ect...
And NO I didn't "hack" my phone...wouldn't know even where to start with that, and no I haven't downloaded any 'third party software'. I don't care for it. YES I have low post count, which is only because I joined after recently getting my iPhone and I only post to ask questions or give answers that I've found out or have heard that works. I didn't call tech support because I've got other things in my life to do than sit on the phone for 2 hours trying to fix something that wasn't broken a couple days ago. I try to find simalar problems on line and see if I can get the answer first (which takes FAR less time) before driving an hour across town to the apple store or staying on the phone half the day with tech support.
I say all this because I see folks getting 'nasty posted' for asking questions which seem to be in the same boat as I am. This message board is to try and HELP folks in a quicker time than the other two options I said above. So please, let's all play nice and remember what we were told as kids...if we don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all

  • Why is my left shift key sticking?

I used my i7 MBP last night without incident. I opened it this morning to have the left shift key start sticking. Took out my can of air, blew it. It still sticks if you touch it in the center bottom of the key. When it "unsticks" it makes a click sound. No other key sticks.
And, no, there was no soda/coffee/tea spills.
    John

Surely it is still under warranty for repair.
I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider  (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store,  make a reservation.

  • X230 Right Shift Key Sticking

Title says it all. I can reproduce the issue 100% of the time.
    * This is with the right shift key only.
    * Starting about 1/4 of the way from the left of the key, I press down at the top of the key.
    * While the key is pressed, I drag my finger down to the bottom of the key.
    * When i release my finger, they key stays stuck.
I type a lot during the day and the issue usually comes up when I have to maintain the press for a few keystrokes and my pinky slides around a little on the shift key, causing it to remain stuck afterwards.
Anyone experience this issue? Workarounds, fixes?
    Thanks,

well I just popped the shift key off and inspected. Compared to the other shift key, listened to it closely, etc. Realized the left side of the metal clip was getting caught on something. Shined a flashlight on the chassis and could see where it was scrapping.
So I took the metal clip off the key and shortened the left side by a very small notch, put the clip back in the key, ran the clip through the holes for it on the chassis and reattached the key. Now there's no more scrapping sound, I can't reproduce the stuck-key issue, and it seems to work perfect now.
For anyone else reading this and looking to do the same, just take care with how much you take off the metal clip as too much would likely make it not stay in where it belongs in the chassis which would cause you to have to press in the center of the key to register a click.
I wouldn't recomment this on a brand new - in warranty computer. Better to let warranty resolve this.

  • Ultraslim wireless keyboard shift key stick

I have an Ultraslim Wireles Keyboard and Mouse combo, but whenever I hit the shift key it stays registered for sometime. To type in passwords with capitals I have to wait a second or two after hitting the shift to get the right input. Is there anyway of making the shift key less persistent?

    hey TOMCLondon,
could you flip open the shift key and clean any grime beneath it ?
Also disconnect and reconnect the device.

  • CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys are sticking (not physically)

I am having a problem with the T-61p I have been using for 2 years now.
About once every 2 days Windows thinks that either the CTRL, the ALT or the SHIFT key is held down.  I only notice this when my mouse's left click or my arrow keys starts behaving funny (like opening dialogs when clicking on icons or highlighting text on a page in MS Word) instead of moving the cursor as they should.
When this starts happening, pressing the CTRL, ALT and SHIFT buttons causes the strange behavior to stop.
None of the keys are physically stuck down.  I am using an external keyboard with my laptop closed and docked.  I have tried switching keyboards, and I get the same results with brand new Logitech keyboards.
What could this be?  Has anyone seen this problem before?
    Your help is much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!
It sounds like you've inadvertently turned on the Sticky Keys accessibility feature.  Since you didn't mention which operating system you're using, I can't tell you how to turn it off.  Trying searching for Sticky Keys in Help in the Start button menu.
    Hope this helps!

  • Left shift key is stuck after cleaning?

I recently had to clean my left shift key because it was sticking so badly, no other keys had the problem so I carefully took off the key cap and plastic doohickies as per a video.  I cleaned the back of the key and a little around where it sets.  After I put everything back the shift key is now locked.  I can only type in capitals etc.  Have checked caps lock and stick button in systems but to no avail.  I restarted the computer and now it has booted in safe mode.
    Please help!

Did you double check to make sure you replaced the shift key correctly?

  • [URGENT] Modifier Keys "Sticking"

Notes:*This has been happening ever since I purchased the PC*Seems to be the windows key(s), shift, alt, and ctrl stuck the majority of the time, rarely only one of them.*Is reproduceably: not Technically, can't find anything that causes it, seems to happen randomly Hello, Nick here. Occasionally, and un-predictably, one of the following keys will "stick": CTRL, SHIFT, ALT, RIGHT WINDOWS KEY, LEFT WINDOWS KEY. When I refer to the term "Stick" it is not physically my keyboard, as I have tried not only the built in keyboard, but over 4 external keyboards( all different brands ), It seems to be in the software, and I do not have sticky keys on. Some of the fixes I have tried include, but are not limted to: Reinstalling keyboard drivers, adjusting repeat delay, restarting computer, starting windows in "Safe Mode", and even gone as far as COMPLETELY REINSTALLING WINDOWS... This problem has become so prevelant that my pc can not be on for more than 10 minutes without it occuring. I have not found a fix for this, however I have found a few sollutions for when it occurs, such as double-tapping either the CTRL, SHIFT, ALT, or WINDOWS KEY. This fixes the problem but only temporarily and it reoccurs only minutes later. However whenever the RIGHT WINDOWS KEY sticks it disallows typing in some programs, and opens shortcuts, and is unsolveable because I cannot double-tap a non-existend key... This has become quite irritating and extremely problematic as I play a wide range of games, and this prevents that by sticking keys ingame, and ALT+Tabbing me out frequently. If anyone at all could assist me on this problem it would be greatly appreciated, if you need anymore info about this feel free to ask. SPECS:RAM: 4.00GBCPU-Integrated Graphics: Intel(R) Celeron(R) N2830 @ 2.16GHz( overclocks to 2.32GHz )

Hi  , Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP 15 Notebook and issue with the keyboard not working correctly. You can resolve this issue by checking the keyboard language. Here is a link to uninstall the keyboard. Restart the computer after uninstalling, it should reinstall automatically. This has helped others. Here is a link to keyboard troubleshooting. I hope something here helps you out. Thanks.

  • Windows 8.1 keys stick after 5 seconds of being held

    Hi,
So here's an example of my problem:
When using applications such as PhotoShop, it's necessary to hold down a key such as CTRL or SHIFT in order to work efficiently. The problem is, holding down a key for any longer than 5 seconds causes it to "stick", as if it's being continuously
held. This can be a real pain when trying to work, as PhotoShop then thinks I'm still holding the SHIFT key (for example), and will remain in select mode. I will have to tap SHIFT again in order to work as normal.
I'm using PhotoShop in this example, but the issue isn't specific to PhotoShop - in fact it seems to be across all of Windows 8.1, even when simply selecting folders in windows explorer; hold SHIFT down for too long and Windows will remain in select mode.
Is there any way to turn this feature off? It's driving me crazy and slowing me down!
    Many thanks,
    Alex

Thanks for your reply, but that's still not solved my issue - all settings are off as suggested.
Going to look into if maybe it's a keyboard issue, i'll let you know my findings.
    Cheers

  • MBP Caps Lock key sticks out more than the others!

Just wondered if this is normal! The caps lock seems to stick out of the keyboard more than the others! Can anyone help?

I just received my new MacBook Pro 17" this afternoon. My tab, caps lock, and shift keys are all raised on the left hand side. If you look at the keys from the left hand side of the keyboard you can see how they are raised up higher than the tilde and fn key. Also, the control keys kind of sticks when it is pressed down all the way. I like the machine, but I've very disappointed in the keyboard. It doesn't seem as nice as my PowerBook keyboard. I have them here side by side. The PowerBook keyboard is perfect and has a better feel when typing. I hope I get used to this new one.

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • How do I fix my left shift key? Any open windows leave and make the desktop visible.

How do I fix my left shift key? Any open windows leave and make the desktop visible. I have tired to go into system preferences and reset all of the keyboard settings to default but the issue hasn't gone away.

You are not running as administrator, I think, which may be required and the only way to properly work and register. Also check for compatibility mode settings, UAC and DEP, all of which may require to be adjusted for a legacy app like PS CS2 to run properly. Also turn off Aero and switch to a conventional visual theme. The brush issue may be related to that or is a more generic problem with your graphics card and mouse config, but since you didn't provide any info on that, it will be hard for anyone to advise.

Ive had an iPad for a year or so, it's got tons of music on it. I recently got myself an iPhone. I read on here about how to set up a completely separate library using my same account (as my iphone couldn't possibly hold the same amount as my pad I thought it made sense!). Trouble is....as I set up a new library it asked me to name it, which I did. The trouble is now, every time I log in to iTunes it logs into the new library which is completely blank. It has of course not effected my music on my pad (phew!), I cannot find my original iTunes a/c anywhere on my pc. In desperation I tried to uninstall the iTunes off my pc, then reinstall, and log into my original a/c hoping all would be revealed thanks to the iCloud, but no.....it's blank! Is there anyway of copying (safely) all of my music and films FROM my iPad ONTO my new blank iTunes account?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Okay, try launching iTunes while holding down the shift key (again) but this time, click "Choose library". Browse to the location of the old library file. The default locations of the library file are inside the iTunes folder described in the following table:
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
Find and open the library file. Are you seeing your normal library now?

  • I am unable to to upload more than one photo at a time. I have tried to hold down the shift key

I am unable to upload more than one photo.  I have tried to hold down the shift key and highlighting the remaining photos.

If you are using the Internet Explorer (IE) browser than you will only be able to upload one file at a time. This is per browser design by Microsoft. If you want to upload multiple files than use another browser such as Firefox or Chrome.
If you are not using IE and are seeing this issue then please share which OS version and browser version you are using.

  • HELP! Keyboard -lowercase 'stuck'-no caps, no Shift key-Can't 'select all'

    HELP!
I have tried all sorts of things, like:
    - removed syst prefs to desktop then restarted
    - un-done, re-done, re-booted
    - tried various options in International and Keyboard & Mouse
    - run disk utility, both from startup CD AND in target disk mode
    - ran Smasher
    - swapped out different keyboards and/or mice
...but these are my keyboard problem symptoms that persist:
    - numeric keypad not working
    - the shift key (for caps & shift characters) not working&
    - commands (i.e., "Select All") not working
...the keyboard does not work in ANY native Mac appl (e.g., Mail, Safari, TextEdit).
The only time my keyboard will work correctly is when I am using Firefox or Word, etc., or when I create a new account as a test new user and I log-in. Keyboard works fine. So it must just be me as user.
Also, oddly enough, keyboard prefs do not show up anywhere.
Anyplace where I should see something, such as
Library>preferences - there should be a file com.apple.keyboardtype.plist --- there is no file in any of the folders anywhere.
All of a sudden the keyboard stopped working, no warning. But my mouse attached to it still works fine. I have no clue what to do to fix and my AppleCare has ran out.
Other things I have noticed and tried:
    - running tech tool
    - repairing permissions
    - switching usb ports for the keyboard from the back of the display
    - removing the mouse from the back of the keyboard
    - unplugging everything but the keyboard and mouse
    ...any ideas???

I did test with a spare keyboard, and it performed the same way: does not work for my user account, is fine for the test account I set up as an additional log-in.
I also did this to try and solve my issue, but still nothin':
    - ran OnyX AND Cache Cleaner
    - ran & configured PrefEdit
    - ran AppleJack twice, once on AUTO for deep cleaning (in single-user mode, of course...)
    - ran MacJanitor
    - tried again to re-set my system prefs
    - reset PRAM again
    Sigh.
All I want is to be able to type capital letters in Mail & Safari. Seems like I'm asking for too much!
    Sigh again.
Thanks for any other advice or things you think I should try.
