Shift-return mood swings

We purchased CS2 with Dreamweaver 8 a while back and I'm
having persistent problems with inserting line breaks (<br>)
with shift-return. Sometimes it works fine, but often, I just get
that black circle with the line through that says - sorry! I'm not
letting you do that! It's a simple thing, but enough to slow down
my productivity (especially since I've been trying to deal with
Adobe customer service by phone...) and is driving me bonkers.
Anyone have (or better yet, solved) this same problem?

Show us a page where you have this problem, please.

  • Shift Return

I have to use a Word template for a report with auto-numbering.
To get a new line, but not a new number I use Shift + Return. When I export as a Word document the shift + returns are converted to returns and the auto-numbering changes.
Any ideas how I can stop this?

    Hello
Shift Return inserts a soft linebreak coded as an UNICODE #2028 in a Pages document exported as .txt.
When the doc is exported in a .rtf file the softReturn is stored as "\uc0\u8232 ".
When the doc is exported in a .doc file the softReturn is stored as a standard return $0D.
In a .doc generated by Word the soft return is stored as a linefeed $0B.
But, I repeat that perhaps what I discovered using HexEdit is not officially documented by Microsoft.
My own advice would be : *go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Pages" menu* and explain that it appears that it would be better to export softReturns in .doc files as lineFeeds.

  • Once I hit SHIFT + RETURN, I can never get back !!!

Can somebody help me?  How do I get the backwards "P" back at the end of of "lóngius" ??

Big Capitals are termed Drop Caps, tyically one character.
Change either that 2 in the Paragraph Panel, or choose a different Paragraph Style

  • Shift+Return Has Stopped Working

I'm using Dreamweaver CC on a Macbook Air with OS X 10.9.2. My shift+return will not work to enter a <br>. I'm creating a Kindle magazine using html within an xml file (though Amazon wants it saved as an html file). When I create a new html file with the first line being <!doctype html>, the shift+return does work to enter a <br>. When I create a new xml file with the first line being <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, however, shift+return will not enter a <br> even after supply the necessary <html></html> (and header and body tags). Is there a way to get around this (without having to first trick DW into thinking it is a plain html file and only adding the xml coding after editing the html text)? Thanks!

XML files are plain text not markup.   Since <br> (Shift+Enter) tags are not valid in XML files, you really shouldn't use them.  The resulting output is likely to look like this:
    &lt;br /&gt;
Are you using XSLT to style your data?

  • Command+Return and Shift+Return keyboard shortcuts stopped working

I'm using Firefox 4.0 on a 21.5" iMac running Mac OS X version 10.6.7. Just this morning, the command+return and shift+return keyboard shortcuts to auto-complete the .com and .net addresses of websites stopped working. Command+w still closes a tab, and command+left click still opens a tab in a new window. However, when I type anything in the address bar ("mac" for example) and then hit command+enter, Firefox opens up a new tab with a Google search for the word I typed. The address for this new tab is as follows:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=mac&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
Any idea what gives? I'm rather perplexed and frustrated.

Just removed OmniBar and the problem went away.

  • Coments of Mood swings on Skype home page

I am still trying to elimanate Coments about mood swings on the Skype page.  Everything that I have been given so far hasn't worked.  Could someone please, help me.  I maybe dense so what I need are detailed instructions.  Thanks ahead of time for your assistance./  Bob

Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named as your Skype name. Open this folder. Locate there the file with the name keyval.db. Delete this file.

  • Soft Returns in Tagged Text

Our Pindar AgilityCMS content managment system flows text to an InDesign page using a special PlugIn.
Some characters are stored natively (store an "a", get an "a" on the page), while other special characters are stored using Tagged Text or Unicode. A return can be either <0x000D> or \u000D. This is especially useful because we can output through one of four "channels".... InDesign, Quark, HTML or as entered in the content manager. The return can now be \p in Quark or <BR> in HTML.  A non-breaking space, for example, can be \u00A0 in the InDesign channel, &nbsp; in HTML or <\!s> in Quark. When we insert the "special character" in the Data Editor of our content system, it might be displayed as [sp], but it will resolve correctly regardless of which channel we publish to.
The problem is that unlike Quark, Adobe does not provide for a "soft return" or forced line break. Sure, you can type one from the keyboard with shift+return, and purists will argue that you'd never want to store a soft (discretionary) return in any type of tagged text or a content management system. However, all our text is set flush left, ragged right, and we frequently want to force line breaks for readability, and do so consistently.
    Instead of:
On Sale Now Buy One, Get
    One Free
    we always want
    On Sale Now
    Buy One, Get One Free
Again, this is a problem whether you store your data in simple tagged text files, or if you bring it in via a complex PlugIn, as we do.
There are many, many threads on this site and elsewhere that discuss this shortcoming. Does Adobe plan to support Soft Returns in Tagged Text with some kind of special tag?

Your question is predicated on some false assumptions, and I'm afraid Peter, Peter, and Stix didn't quite pick that up in their replies. (This gives me pause since normally they're all very detail-oriented).
As I told you when you posted in the thread from 2009, "InDesign Tagged Text supports forced line breaks just fine."
    You write:
Does Adobe plan to support Soft Returns in Tagged Text with some kind of special tag?
Adobe's import mechanism does indeed support soft returns. There's no need to speculate on Adobe's plans, which is the direction the other replies went to.
With that in mind, let's move to your actual question:
I think you need to address this question to your support channel for Pindar AgilityCMS. Indeed, in IDTT <000A> represents a shift-return. Here's a screenshot of a test textframe:
and when exported to InDesign Tagged Text, it produces:
    <ASCII-MAC>
    <Version:7><FeatureSet:InDesign-Roman><ColorTable:=<Black:COLOR:CMYK:Process:0,0,0,1>>
    <DefineParaStyle:NormalParagraphStyle=<Nextstyle:NormalParagraphStyle>>
    <ParaStyle:NormalParagraphStyle>Paragraph one
    <ParaStyle:NormalParagraphStyle>Paragraph two<0x000A>P2/Line two
I presume you have tried <0x000A> as discussed in the prior thread.
I suppose it's remotely possible this is a Mac/PC issue, because the two operating systems do you different line break characters.
Anyhow, once again, your criticism of InDesign and Adobe is false and unfair. And if you have a problem with a 3rd party plugin, those are really the people you need to talk to.
Still, it might be wise to get it working with plain File > Place. Try testing my above IDTT file. Or exporting your own from a sample textframe like the one I used.

  • Modify amount of space after line return

    hi
I'm creating a html email (using a table and a new inline style each time i insert text, as advised)
However, this query may apply to any form of html produced in dreamweaver:
Can I set and modify the amount of space inserted after a line return?
I know shift+return gives standard space but I'd like to ideally insert a slightly bigger space than this (although not as big a full "return" gives)
    Surely this must be possible?
    All help appreciated
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
Hitting the enter key gives you a paragraph tag <p>  </p>
Paragraphs have a default margin so you need to change that margin. To change/adjust the margin on all paragraphs on your page use css.
Add it to the head of the page between style tags or to an external stylesheet:
    p {margin: 5px 0 0;}
The above sets margin 5 pixels top 0 pixels right/left 0 pixels bottom. Adjust as per your need.
    Thanks
    Bhawna

  • How to delete paragraph marks (returns) without affecting spacing, like at the top of the next page

if you have a large document and you add two returns at the end of every major section or group but one of the two returns goes to next page, how do you keep that return so it doesn't mess up spacing if something is added earlier in document but get rid
of it so the top of the page is the same as the other pages? I was wondering if there was something like a hidden return that would hide the paragraph at the top of the page but if more information was added before it, it would act like a regular return. Hope
    this makes sense.
Also do you know what the paragraph maker with a dotted box around it is? I was trying to solve the above problem by trying different keys with the return key, e.g. control + return gives you a page break, shift + return gives you a soft return,
control + alt + return gives you this funky paragraph symbol that seems to erase lines in front of it at least it did when I printed out a page using them.

Thank you! I've never used Styles but have used the formatting. I just didn't want to have to go to the bottom of every page and change the paragraph formatting but format painter helped a lot. Thanks again.
You could also use a heading style for the start of your next major block of text which is formatted to have a page break before. Styles are at the heart of Word formatting. Take the time to learn about them to save a lot of time and hair pulling.

  • InDesign CS5 - Enter and Return keys give unexpected results

I've been using CS5 for just a few days (Mac Pro, Mac OS X 10.6.3). I've noticed that the Enter and Return keys aren't always behaving as expected. Enter doesn't give me a column break, shift-Return doesn't give me a line break but a new paragraph, and more often than not I can't select the default option in a dialog with either Return or Enter. I've just read cpsid_84345, which says this is an issue in German and Swedish language versions, but I'm using English. The 7.01 update doesn't seem to be available. Any advice?

That the KBSC files are XML doesn't guarantee faultless migration from one version to the next, probably because Adobe just forgot to cope with importing KBSCs from previous versions. It's great that InDesign offers you such flexibility with the KBSCs, but it's terrible that the implementation has been so sloppy in at least the three last versions (maybe earlier versions, too, but I try to repress the memories).
Some people have been asking Adobe to make KBSCs scriptable. This would enably you to maintain a small database with KBSCs which a script could read and feed into a new version of InDesign, or redo a KBSC file after it has become corrupt, or whatever minor or major mishap.
The more people ask for this the better: go to http://www.adobe.com/support/feature.html and request script access to the KBSCs.

  • Enter key not producing hard returns

Suddenly, my enter key is producing soft returns instead of hard returns. After trying to fix it for hours, I found out that hard returns are produced only with the alt+enter keys. Somehow they are reversed. What can I do?

To enable the enter key one uses shift+return and that gives you a soft return. If you want a hard return just press the return key.
