Shifting from EAS to Outlook Sync - will I lose my contacts?

The contacts currently on my iPhone were synced there using Exchange Active Sync from my work e-mail account. If I disable/delete the work account, is there any way to ensure the contacts are preserved? I will be changing to sync with a local Outlook 2007 account instead.
I haven't been able to find any reliable info about backing up iPhone contacts then restoring them; and from what I have read, deleting a Mail account with EAS will also delete the contacts and calendar items as well.
Any advice appreciated.

Unfortunately not - it will be a local Outlook account. I was afraid there wasn't any way to keep what is on the iPhone currently.
I think I will need to use Plaxo to sync with my Exchange account at work, then sync those contacts to my local Outlook at home. Or perhaps just export the contacts from Outlook/Exchange then import them to Outlook. Unless anyone has a better idea?

One computer iTunes can support multiple Apple IDs. One iPod can also support multiple IDs. Don't do an "erase and sync." Simply add your Apple ID to the computer's iTunes and to the iPod. The only nuisance is app updating, especially if you do the updates from the computer, rather than from the iPod.

That does do that. However it is a temporary backup and not the most reliable. Make sure you also go into file > Transfer purchases from _______ to make sure you save your music and apps. though the article that wjosten posted is correct for the backup as well. But article HT1414 is better for info on backing up.

Why would you think that? You will only lose the photos you have sent to iPhotos trash yourself. And you have all your data backed up anyway, don't you?

No. You will not lose your contacts just by resetting.
If at some point you need to restore your iPhone, you can re sync your contacts using iTunes.

Back up your contacts and calendars before disconnecting from iCloud, restore them after you do.

if you back up your ipod, then restore it to factory settings, there will be an option to restore your contacts.

How do I get music onto my iPhone without having to download it from the Cloud? My iPhone gives the error "sync will resume when "computer" is available" on the final step of synching. The computer says "waiting for changes to be applied" but the phone doesn't have the two little sync arrows anymore. Seems it will stay like that for hours if I don't cancel it. I would recommend re syncing the music to the phone from iTunes by unchecking the sync music checkbox in iTunes, sync, then re check it and sync again.
For reference this is what I mean:
Syncing music
Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
Select your your iPod in the Devices section on the left side of the iTunes window.
In the main iTunes browser window, select Music.
Select the option to Sync Music. You may also select "Include Music videos" if you would like to sync Music videos to a device.

In terms of the actual update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11) - that should copy all of your apps (purchases or free) and other iTunes purchases over (music, films etc). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

An iPad 1 will update to iOS 5.1.1, and an iPad 2 and 3 to iOS 6.0.1 - they are the only versions that are 'signed' by Apple for them.

Yes. And you will lose the game as well as all other software connected to your old Apple ID, and they cannot be transferred.
