Shifting video clips along a podcast video track?

I have created a short video in iMovie, and imported it into my podcast in Garageband 3.0.4 (104.7). It imports into a Video track, replacing the podcast track. However, unlike other tracks imported it won't import at the position of the playhead, only at the very beginning of the podcast.
How can I get it to import at the point I want, say 30 seconds along the track? Or, how can I shift the video (preferably locked to its sound track so it remains in sync, as you can do in iMovie) and move it along the track further? The video sound will move, but the video won't. I want to record other sounds in Garageband on the male voice track and jingles track, and have these before the video track starts to play.
Thanks so much!

that's just the way gb works, it's not a video editor.
you would need to add the 30 seconds in iMovie before dropping it into gb.

  • Walking characters, multiple video tracks/clips with a green screen

I'm pretty new to Final Cut Pro.
    Here is the scenario:
    -I have three characters (puppets).
-Each are recorded on a separate video track.
-Each are recorded with a green screen for the background.
-They are all walking in the same direction.
Question: How do I have all three characters walk along the same path on the same video? I have layered them one on top of the other and have tried to mess around with the different settings (including: Mask Shape filter; cropping the clip). However, they either walk out of the clip or there is not enough room between them with all clips playing at the same time.
Is there some way to isolate the character and their movements?
(P.S. I need them all to be of the same opacity in the end)
    Thanks for your expertise.

    1. I have three characters moving quite a large distance. I am trying to fit all of this movement into one clip and not have the video clips overlapping (I am also dealing with puppeteers in the background, so there is a lot I still have to edit out of the background using Shake).
Good luck on Shake but creating a mask and then processing the key is easy in Motion.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "executing the keys".
Masking, tweaking, processing, rendering. If you set up each puppet as a separate project in Motion, you can successfully execute on of the keys and then apply the same settings to the other two.

Exporting the movie removes all processing so all you're doing is stacking up three puppets moving against a transparent background. Each can be scaled, positioned, keyframed, and have interactive shadows applied to it without requiring the chromakey to be process first. Huge timesaver.

Motion requires some pretty hefty graphics hardware. You must have at least a 4870. But you have not specified in any of your posts what your format is.

  • How do I command a single video track (with many clips) to an action?

    Hi,
This is my first post in this forum, and I am a beginner on FCE.
I want to take one of my video tracks and reduce the size to 1/4 and put it in the upper right corner of the screen. I want my screen split into 4 equal sections. My first track has many edit points, and I cannot seem to command the whole track to stay put in the upper right corner of the screen.
I can do it if I choose each clip in the track individually (and size it manually) but not all at once. How do I do the track all at once?
    Thanks,
    humbucker237

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You can set the scale to 25% for the first clip in timeline and place in the the upper right corner of the canvas, select it in timeline and use COMMAND-C to copy it.
Now select all remaining clips in timeline and use the paste attributes--motion command to set the scale to 25% for all clip and place them correctly.
    OR
    Use nested sequence.
Simply create a new sequence (S2) and drag your edited one (S1) (at full scale and position set to 0,0) in the new one. That's the nesting process.
From this step, ALT-double-click this sequence (S1) in timeline to open it in viewer and set the scale and position value.

  • How can I copy a clip to another video track?

I've been fiddling around to find a solution to this, but to no avail...
I have a video track containing a couple of clips. Now I want to copy a clip and paste it onto another video track in the same sequence. This seems to be an impossible task...
    How can I do that?
    Thanks for enlightening me!

Right click on the clip in the timeline you want to copy.  Select "copy".  Then select in the timeline the video track you want to copy TO.  Place your CTI (current time indicator) in the timeline where you want your clip to get pasted.  Then Go to your PrPro menu in the header, select EDIT>PASTE.  Voila!
What may confuse you and make it seem impossible is that you can right click on a clip in the timeline and "copy".  But when you go to right click and "paste" no context menu opens up.  You can of course use the EDIT>COPY and EDIT>PASTE command as well.
And what works even more easily is you can just use your Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V commands.  You can also copy and paste into the same video track and then just click and drag the new copy to whatever video track you want.
All of the above will copy and paste your audio tracks as well.  If you want to just copy the video then use the Alt key when selecting and it will only select the video or audio depending on what you try to select.
The basics are all well covered in Adobe Help and use this for starters:

  • Applying effects to multiple clips or an entire sequence on a separate video track

I'm looking for an easy way to apply effects on a separate video track.  In AVID I would just drag and drop the effect preset onto a blank layer.  Or if I wanted the clip to affect just a few clips, I would add two edits (similar to razor blade) on a separate video track and drag the effect preset between those edit points.  Is there a way to do this in Premiere Pro?  Running CS 5.0.4.  Thanks for the help!

Well, depending on what you want to do, you might actually be able to use a clip instance of one sort or another.
One option is Transparent Video (File > New > Transparent Video); by itself, Trans. Video doesn't do anything, but some effects can be applied to it and will generate an output. This doesn't work with all effects, so you'll have to experiment. Check here for more: Create a transparent video clip
Another option would be to use a Color Matte (File > New > Color Matte) or Black Video (File > New > Black Video) clip. These do have an effect by themselves, so you could apply any effect you wanted to them, and then possibly use a Blending Mode to apply it. Black Video is common for this purpose, with something like the Add mode. Again, not perfect, but it will depend on the effect you're trying to achieve.
Unfortunately, we don't have anything like AE's adjustment layers in Premiere Pro. That would solve your problem, quickly.

  • Synchronize clips - lock video track

Lets consider a scenario where I have created a music video from many video sources.
I now want to add an audio track to the video. I drag the audio track to the timeline, selects the audio and an audio track of one of the video tracks.
What happens if I choose "Synchronize clips" and choose to sync on audio?
    * Will only the audio track move on the timeline to sync properly?
    * Will the video track move on the timeline to sync properly?
What I want to happen here, is that the video remains into existing position and audio track positioned relatively to the video track.
What happens if the audio track has e.g. 1 minute silence in the start of the file? Will the audio track be positioned from the start of the timeline and everything else offset to the right on the timeline?

I was able to test this and found the behavior:
It does not seem possible to say "never move this video track" - it all depends on the characteristics of the audio track that is synced.
The best approach seems to be:
    1) Add your new audio footage
    2) Select all your audio tracks (including the video ones and the new one)
    3) Choose Synchronize Clips from right click menu.
Then one of two things will happen:
    a) If the new audio track has a long lead in, it will be placed at 00:00 in the timeline and the existing video tracks+audio will be offset further to the right on your timeline. This means that if you had some video starting at 00:00 - this will no longer be the case. You will have to trim the lead in of the audio track and reposition your video tracks where they were before you synchronized.
    b) If the new audio track has no lead in or "shorter lead in than the video" - the audio track will position itself nicely on the timeline and no trim+reposition is necessary.
I really wish there were some flag in the synchronize dialogue where you could say that one of the tracks should be the reference point and all other tracks that are synchronized are positioned with regards to that track - even if that meant some trimming of video or audio. This would be extremely helpful.

  • Can I apply a transition across two clips in different video tracks?

In reading the manual, I see that I can butt two video clips up against each other in a single video track, overlap them and apply a transition.
However, I'm accustomed to (in audio editing software) making transitions across two clips that are in two separate video tracks.
I would like to be able to fade in and out, back and forth across two video tracks. Is that possible?
Please direct me to resources already documented and I will go read further. Maybe there are online resources, other posts, etc.
    Thanks

Most transitions will work if the clip is overlapped on another track. Just apply the transition to the edit point. Some, like the 3D simulation transitions, will not work properly like this.
It would really be better if you learned how to use this application the way it was designed to be used rather than the way you used some other application.

  • Merge Clips:  Can you omit the audio from the video track?

    To be more specific:
    Running FCP 6.0.3:
I'm syncing audio separately recorded to video for a feature film. The video (RED ftg) has one track of reference audio on it, and it's usually a scratchy wireless signal that is not useable. Can I merge the video track with the audio tracks and leave behind the bad audio? Or can I get rid of that audio in any way?
    Thanks

WireTap Studio did the trick. I downloaded a free Trial version and bob's yer uncle.

  • Select and scale multiple video tracks at once?

Is there a way to select or "group" several video tracks in FCE and scale them as a single unit? Is there a key command to do this?
For example, I am using a circle matt to vignette a video clip. I like the the two together just the way they are, (size relationship and relative positions), but I want to enlarge them as a single unit instead of independently.
I have roughed-in multiple clips in my timeline with the same issue so it would be much faster if there is a way to group or select them and then scale them like you can in most graphic programs.
    Thanks,

    Hi Alchroma.
I should have been clearer, but it's hard to describe. = )
If I have video clips stacked under the playhead as tracks and they are all the same duration, and I hold the shift key to select several clips at once in the timeline -- can I scale them in the canvas as a unit (all at once) instead of grabbing the corner of each individual clip to enlarge it?
Just wondering, like in Illustrator, if can I grab a single corner point, but scale several objects as a group if they are all selected at once. If I have to select each clip and the corresponding mask across the entire timeline, it will be hard to keep the attributes the same as well as time consuming.

  • How to isolate one audio or video track?

How to isolate one audio or video track? My premiere pro cc will only allow me to grab all 8 audio tracks and the video tracks at once when i import it and bring them into the timeline. When I click on one it highlights them all.

It helps to indicate what version of Premiere you have and whether you're on Mac or Windows.
If you're on 7.0.1 or later, then disable the Linked Selection button in the Timeline. It's the button to the right of the magnet (Snap). If you frequently want to toggle between linked and unlinked selection, you can assign a shortcut to the command
Also, you can select any track item by holding ALT while clicking. To select multiple individual track items (e.g., A3, A5, & A7 for a given clip), hold ALT+SHIFT while clicking.
And I believe Sarthak meant "Unlink" rather than "Ungroup." A/V clips are linked by default, so Unlink is generally available. Ungroup will be available only if what's selected is a set of clips that you manually grouped.

  • How do you keep audio tracks connected to a video track?

I mostly keep the audio and video of captured clip together, in synch. When I put a clip on the timeline, the audio tracks become disconnected from the video track. This is happening regularly and I can't get on with the edit. Every time I move a clip, the audio gets separated from the video. I think something is wrong with my setup. How can I set the project up so that the audio tracks stay with the video track until I unlock them?

I am running into another effect which I don't understand.
I select the video of a clip in the timeline. Then I shift click the stereo audio. This connects the audio and video (which I never separated in the first place). Then when I move the video+audio clip, the clip is copied, which I do not want. I must have turned on something that I don't want. Maybe this has something to do with my linking problem. Shift L did not solve the problem yet, but I need to experiment with it more.

  • PRE8 - Transitioning between multiple video tracks

    Hi,
I've been making Youtube vids for awhile with a web cam, and using a Microsoft app to sync my audio up with the webcam.
I now have a second camera, and have purchased PRE8 for some of the effects, and to try to sync the video closer to the audio (as well as adding multiple camera shots).
I've recorded all my video angles (5 in all) and have been trying to switch between video tracks.
I first set my audio track into PRE8, then the first video. I work to sync the two, then mute the audio track from the webcam video clip.
When I add a second video clip in, can I add it as a new video track, and then transition between them?
The book I have only uses separate video clips, all stacked onto one video track.
The problem with me doing that is, I need to pull all 5 video clips in, sync them to the audio track, and then change in between them.
Having to clip them duration wise for every transition is going to take awhile, and seems like it would be hard to get right.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
Let me know if you need more information from me to help.
    Thanks!

Well, the Multi-cam feature would simplify life a bit, but there is a big difference in the cost of the two programs.
What I would do is look at a workflow, something like this:
Import your main footage, probably a Clip with a medium wide shot, and drag it to the Timeline. Now, does this Clip contain the full song, or was that recorded separately? Either way, check for the sync for the entire Clip. When you play this Clip, use the * key on the numberpad (with NumLock ON), to place Markers where you think you will want the "cut-away" shots. Don't worry if they are not exactly where you will end up placing the cut-aways, as they are just there to remind you. Now, with the cut-aways, Import one of those into Project. From the Project Panel, Dbl-click on it to open it in the Source Monitor. Set the In and Out Points to suit, and then from the Source Monitor, drag that Instance of the Clip onto an upper Video Track. Let any Audio go where ever PrPro wants it, because you will Alt-click on that Audio, and Delete it. Now, slide it along the Timeline, until it syncs up with the "master" Audio Track. You have the benefit of knowing which strings you are plucking, or which chords you are using, so it will be much easier for you. Were I doing that, I would not have a clue, and would have to use that Clip's Audio to try and match up the visuals.
Remember, that source Clip can have its In & Out Points set as many times as you wish, and you can add any number of Instances to the Timeline, where you wish, and repeat the process of visually syncing to the master Audio.
Repeat for the other desired angles.
When you are done, just add a Cross-Dissolve to each end of each of the additional Clips, as desired.
From an aesthetic standpoint, you might also want to think about doing some of those "different angles" as PiP (Picture in Picture). I have seen that treatment used very successfully with musical pieces, especially if they are instructional in nature.
Let me know if the above workflow seems logical for what you have, and what you want to do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Move Video Tracks

I haven't touched FCP in over a year and I beyond rusty. I have three video clips(different camera angles of an interview) that are on individual video tracks. I want to rearrange the tracks (move the bottom to the top) and also maybe toggle the video off so I can see a track below. I have no idea how to do this.

Hold the shift key to prevent the track from moving horizontally (in time), click and drag it. Start with the lowest track and drag it to say V4 or V5 -this will give you some working space to rearrange the others.
When you have them in the right order, select them all, hold shift and drag back to tracks V1-3. Note that you don't have to do this, but it keeps the timeline neat and tidy.
To turn off a particular track's visibilty, click its green button at the left of the timeline. It will change to a darker green. In some circumstances, turning a tracks visibility on and off may require you to re-render.

  • Moving video tracks around?

Is there a way to click and drag a video track so it becomes a different track #? Like if I wanted track 2 to be track 7.. How would I do that?
    Thank you.
    -patrick

Experimentation is different. I use special or isolated sequences.
Look in the manul for moving clips from one track to another. It's needlessly confusing, FCP wants to do an insert by default. You need a tricky key combo to move stuff around without duplicating it or inserting it and making everything shift downstream.
Shift-dragging will constrain a clip to vertical movement to upper or lower tracks.

  • How can you collapse several video tracks into one track?

Hi, I have a stack of five video tracks that make up an identification placard for a speaker. I need to create motion on this, but don't want to have to do it to every track individually. I believe there is a way to incapsulate all five tracks into one track. Does anyone know the method of doing this?
    Thanks so much, Bob

Select the tracks and type Option - C, or go to the menu Sequence > Nest Item(s).
That will nest the tracks in to one clip on your timeline. If you need to make changes in the nest, double click on the nested clip in the timeline and it will re-open the tracks that have been nested.
