Shiny buttons, UI art in Photoshop techniques

I have seen a lot of request for how to make custom button art for us no artists..
I have found some resources on the web that may be of interest. I am not a representative of any of these sites, but have found the tutorials useful for UI creation.
Just thought I would share:
- shiny button tutorial
http://www.verbaska.com/?p=52
- lots of basic photoshop tutorials
http://www.tutorial9.net/category/photoshop/
there are probably others out there.. anyone want to share?

  • Logitech mouse buttons not working in photoshop cc 2014

    logitech mouse buttons not working in photoshop cc 2014 winds 8.1. Is this a common problem?
    I have updated the latest drivers and have a few buttons programmed with keyboard shortcuts that used to work in previous versions of Photoshop but don't work now.
    Scrolling with mouse in bridge stopped working in cc butI see it is now working.
    any ideas?

    Many Photoshop extensions are not compatible with Photoshop CC 2014 for Adobe removed support for Flash Panels in CC 2014. Many extensions panels are flash based.  Check with the developer to see if their blendmein extension works with CC 2014.
    Adobe does not maintain Photoshop so it backward compatible with prior versions of Photoshop.  This brakes things like action scripts plugins extensions etc. Keep old version of Photoshop installed....

  • Sending line art to Photoshop?

    Illustrator CS4 on Snow Leopard.
    I have a truly vexing Illustrator problem. It seems like a simple challenge, though.
    I have a large black and white vector illustration. There are no grays, only black and white line art.
    I'd like to send only the black line art to Photoshop with the white areas treated as transparency.
    Photoshop treats the un-filled areas as transparency, while it treats the white Illustrator fills as solid white.
    Ordinarily I would simply outline my strokes and do some pathfinder operations to subtract the white fills from the black.
    In this instance, though, there are hundreds of paths: blacks above whites in the stack, whites above blacks, etc. so going through pathfinder commands one path at a time seems almost impossible.
    I've also tried re-coloring all blacks as Pantone spots and printing a color rip to PDF. Same problem: Photoshop treats white fills as solid white.
    So... is there something I'm missing. Is there an easy way to separate my black lines and bring them to Photoshop?

    Outline all the strokes and then use pathfinder Merge. Afterwards select and delete the white objects.

  • Bridge button no longer in Photoshop CS6

    I have seen discussions about this subject already but so far there has not been a satisfactory answer. People are asking why the bridge button was removed from Photoshop, as we use it quite frequently to move between Photoshop and Bridge. The answer that been provided is that it was removed to make more screen room, which is clearly not true. In version 5.1 the Bridge button is located on the "file" menu bar at the very top of the screen and so it has absolutely no effect on the amount of available screen space. I think that we would greatly appreciate it if this button were put back in and Adobe would quit making excuses as to why it was removed in the first place. Clearly it was not to create more screen space.
    Also, the Bridge button is still there in InDesign CS6. So, why not do the same for Photoshop?
    Thanks,
    -Pat
    ps: Or, you could always allow users to have the option of allowing it or not by adding an option to the preferances. More user control of the interface would be nice anyway.

    You can open Bridge and change the file associations in Edit>File Type Associations to change to PS CS6.  That is the easiest way.  Another way would be to open Control Panel>Programs>Default Programs to change the file association for .jpeg, .psd., .tif, et cetera.
    For your info, and others, this does not work in situations were the file associations become corrupted by uninstalling a previous version.  The mechanism for corruption is not quite clear to Adobe, but somehow the registry for file associations gets reset to the version that was deleted.  Since the normal methods of changing file associations, that you mention, do not affect the registry file in question, the problem still remains.  Therefore one needs to wipe files with the Adobe Script Cleaner or go in and change the registry.

  • Recommended tutorials for using paths/vector art in Photoshop?

    Hi all!
    Can you recommend any good tutorials for using paths/vector art in Photoshop?
    Honestly, I've had a good look for even one - without much success.
    I Have lots of experience with paths/vector art in Illustrator, Fireworks and InDesign but I believe you really can do great things with them in Photoshop now for illustration work.
    i'm just baffled by it. I can fill and stroke and edit a vector shape in PS - but if I custom DRAW a vector path or shape, things get confusing!
    Hoping someone can point me in a helpful direction
    John

    John,
    I wouldn't claim to know everything there is to know, but I'm reasonably certain it hasn't changed.
    Are the 'shapes' just vector masks with a raster element inside?
    Yes. That's an accurate enough description.
    And if you apply a colour to a path that you've drawn - does it rasterise?
    It doesn't have to rasterize. If you see color, it's pixels.
    I was definitely of the impression that a lot more could be done in PS these days that might formerly have been done in ILLUSTRATOR.
    The shape/path tools in Photoshop have been enhanced and improved in recent years, but the product of their use still differs from Illustrator's true vector output.

  • Creating line art in photoshop

    Hi all,
    I have experimented with various tutorials and filters in photoshop hoping to replicate the clean smooth lines of the line art type image below (image based of a photo I presume).
    Does anyone know or can provide me with some tutorials on how to do such work.
    Any help would be great

    Probably done with the Trace function in a vector program.
    Similar results are possible but difficult with Photoshop.

  • Clip art in Photoshop elements 9

    I just purchased Photoshop Elements 9, I was working with the trial for a few weeks and had to have it. I am new to this software but I am learning pretty quickly; I am designing a book cover for my wife using a photo I took and wanted to know if you can insert a clip art image. I am trying to add an image of angel wings to the photo. I have already added a new text layer and want to place the wings underneath the text, Any help with this would be great.
    Thanks again.
    MM

    1) Open your main image in the Editor window and add text - you will have two layers in the layers pallet.
    2) Open your angel image (File >Open then browse to image)
    3) With both images in the project bin double click the main image to place it back in the Editor window.
    4) Click the angel image in the project bin and drag it up into the main editor window - this will create a third layer.
    5) Select the hand tool and hold down shift and drag the corner handles of the bounding box to re-size the angel image then move to position by dragging.
    6) Save as a PSD or for jpeg Click layer >Flatten image >Save As.

  • How do I add button states separately without Photoshop Layers?

    I realize I can make a layered Photoshop file to import buttons and their states into Muse using the "Place Photoshop Button.,.."
    but I would rather do them individually manually i.e. exporting each state from Photoshop as independent .png files into my assets folder, such as normalbutton.png, overbutton.png, activebutton.png, and manually importing each state?  Any ideas?

    Again:
    1. Choose an object.
    2. Choose the state (normal, rollover, active …)
    3. Klick on "Fill"
    4. Choose a photo and a method to fit it into the object.
    5. Repeat that for the other states.

  • Button Highlights/Overlays in Photoshop

    How do I create a simple rectangle highlight around text in Photoshop? I tried creating a rectangle with the rectangle tool. Shape Layers creates an outline (which I can create a thicker stroke), and Fill Pixels creates a rectangle with the option to turn off Anti-Aliasing (as recommended by Larry Jordan, due to DVDSP's inability to read the anti-aliasing on a highlight).
    Current PS layers layout:
    [layer 1] Background layer (DVD Menu picture), [layer 2] Text layer (button names), [layer 3] Overlay/Button Highlights
    Overlay/Button Highlights is the part I'm stuck on. It seems silly to imagine that a simple rectangle would be so hard to make.
    When imported into DVD Studio Pro 4:
    The Shape Layers version of the rectangle is not readable.
    The Fill Pixels version of the rectangle shows as a solid, black rectangle that covers the words
    However, both look like the the highlight is AROUND the words within Photoshop. In the Layers Panel in Photoshop, the "Overlay/Button Highlights" Opacity is set to 100% & the Fill is set to 0% (so I can see the words within the rectangle.

    Larry Jordan's e-mail response:
    "Brian:
    You can't get there from here.
    The highlight layer in the DVD totally obscures whatever is below it. So, if you create a rectangle, it will block the text underneath, even if they aren't underneath in Photoshop, the DVD treats the overlay layer as the highest layer in the menu.
    So, you need to create rectangles in Photoshop, then cut out the letters in the overlay using masks.  Next, you need to be sure that the overlay is solid black with no soft edges - DVDs don't support the edges.
    Finally, you will need to rasterize all shapes and text - Layer > Rasterize layer.

  • Importing 4 Glass Effect Buttons in FLEX from Photoshop?

    Hi,
    I made 4 glass effect buttons in Photoshop CS3, for mouse up,
    over, click and out. I want to use these buttons in FLEX by
    importing them and relate them with these mouse events.
    How do I do that?
    Thanks

    I did figure out a work around to both problems.
    I still use a timer but now I set the constructor to fire every 1 frame. While I have not been able to attach a listener directly to the child movieclips that tells me when the MovieClip reaches the last frame, I did find that I'm able to test for this state without the listener. Each time my Timer calls the listener, I have it check to see if the child in question has reached the last frame or not. If so, I stop the MovieClip. Works great now.
    private var btnMovieClip:MovieClip;
    btnMovieClip.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnMovieClipListener);
    private var btnClicked:String = "";
    public function btnMovieClipListener(event:Event):void {
    if(event.target.name == "myInstance") {
    btnClicked = event.target.name;
    btnMovieClip.gotoAndPlay(0);
    var timer:Timer = new Timer(1);
    timer.start();
    timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, checkFrames);
    private function checkFrames(event:TimerEvent):void {
    if(btnClicked == "myInstance") {
    if(btnMovieClip.currentFrame == btnMovieClip.totalFrames) {
    btnMovieClip.gotoAndStop(0);
    event.target.stop();
    event.target.removeEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, checkFrames);

  • Creating buttons from layers in photoshop document

    I know this should be simple but I am having some trouble. If someone could take the time to explain this. I created a menu in Photoshop (buttons and all) and just need to know how to let DVDSP know which layers I want as buttons. And if there is anything I should know about color mapping too. Thanks everyone!

    This is for layered menus
    Layers Link
    But it sounds like you want a simple overlay? For simple overlays it is best to use flattened picts or tifs and not use a Photoshop file and point to the layer that you want as an overlay.

    I want to learn to create menus and artwork in photoshop and Illustrator.
    I have seen many books but they tend to work with manipulating photographs.
    I want to create pictures and menus....
    Can anyone recommend a good book (available in UK) to teach me steps in either illustrator or photoshop.
    Thank you

    I know 2 books there are initial and advanced concepts of visual composer
    Get all basic step and some advanced steps, its very good book.

  • How to prepare Illustrator logo art with Photoshop elements

    I have designed a logo that will be used in a wide variety of print and web applications. It is made up of primarily vector art...outlined type and an icon. But I am using a photo as the background fill inside the icon shape.
    What is the best way to construct the final art files so that I get optimum resolution of the leaf image for the largest applications (window signage) and efficient file sizes for the smaller applications (business card)? I want to provide the client with vector art (not jpegs or tiffs) and still have the photo be the appropriate resolution for a wide range of finished sizes for print and web.

    twob,
    It is quite common to create a number of different files for different purposes.
    Apart from different colour mode for print (CMYK/spot) and web/other screen uses (RGB), obviously print requires higher resolution, and web/other screen uses require raster files.
    The resolution needed for web/other screen uses should be evident in each case.
    The resolution needed for different print tasks depends on a number of things, including kind of printing.
    In this connexion it is important to realize that the required resolution in print depends on size and viewing distance: if you view artwork that is twice the size at twice the distance, you will need half the resolution, in other words the same file size in pixels by pixels. You may say that the required file size (pixels by pixels) depends on the viewing angle.
    This means that a billboard to be viewed at a large distance and a normal page may have the same file size; obviously, the file size for a business card may be smaller.
    Apart from all that, it is possible to recreate a photo like the leaf as vector artwork in Illustrator, and have everything as vector. If you consider that an option, you may post in the Illustrator forum to get started, and/or look round for tutorials; specific ones may very well be sugested in the forum, probably by others over there; it is past midnight over here.

  • Photoshop technique question

    Hi good people.
    I have Photoshop CS3.
    I would like to know how to take a full-color photo and separate it into 5 specific (spot) colors for a screen print job.
    I know you're going to say, "Why not just do a 4 color process print?"
    LOL... I have my reasons.
    Anyway, so is there some way to take a full color photo - say of a mountain scene with a lake at its base and some pine trees - and separate tonally into 5 distinct grayscale layers?
    Thanks for your experience and willingness to help!
    Please include any instructions in a step-by-step.... I'm a little dense, so you gotta pretend you're teaching a 7th grader...:-)

    The channel mixer is not in the menu options but on the programm cd - folder "goodies" or similar.
    You can optimize the grays before posterizing. But it would not solve the problem.
    That's because you've just 5 "colors". It woudn't also help to use more gray tones.
    Another idea - to do after postrizing:
    (Depending on your picture) you could first do a rectangular or freeform selection and then a color range selection for one or more of the grays inside the first selection. Then cut out with Ctrl+Shift+J on a new layer. Later you can combine the layers just as you think it best.
    It would make sense in my example image (screenshot) - but not in every image.

  • Masking won't mask a Photoshop file in button

    I have created a button in Flash MX 2004 using a Photoshop
    image of a round button. The square Photoshop edges have been
    cropped using the mask layer in the button art. It looks the way it
    should on screen with the image masked correctly, but when it's
    exported the mask covers the Photoshop art with a black shape and
    the image isn't masked. What do I need to do to make the mask work
    in a button?
    Ian Greathead

    Save the file from photoshop as a png file. Open it again in
    photoshop to make sure that you see the image with the transparency
    the way you want it. Once imported to Flash it will have the
    transparency intact and you'll be good ta go.
