Shmmax for 64bit redhat w/16GB Memory

I'm getting conflicting responses for what should be the correct shmmax setting on a Linux system. I currently have 8GB of memory and about to add another 8GB totaling 16GB, I am then going to make my MAX_SGA_SIZE 10GB. Should I be setting the shmmax to 50% of physical memory making it configure multiple memory segments on sga startup, or should I configure shmmax to say 12GB in order to get my 10GB SGA into 1 memory segment. I'm seeing some people say that the 1 memory segment is the way to go, but then I also see on Linux to configure it to 50% of total memory...does linux do better with multiple memory segments or something? Any help is appreciated, thx!

Absolutely no damage. It's a number only used when the shared memory segment is created. It's checked to see if this number is smaller than the size of the shared memory segment to be created.

The best settings depend on what you are working on. Here are mine for a nearly identical system:
It's usually best to keep memory blocks in 4GB blocks. If my workflow is more in other apps I'll switch out other apps to 8 gb if things start to slow down. Because of my usual project settings I keep MP turned off on this machine, but for some projects I'll turn it on. If you decide to experiment to MP then keep an eye on the Actual CPU's that will be used and make sure the numbers add up. Other applications and Actual Cores should add up the the total in your system.

installing XE11 on a 64b linux gives me a message like 'unexpected nummer' or '

shmmax seems to big for calculating:

The problem is that every time I try to open any program from Office 2011, I immediately get the following window, for example for Word: "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens each and every time I try to open Word or other Office 2011 component.
Thinking it might be a licensing issue, I purchased and downloaded a new copy of Office 2011 from Amazon and installed it on my new MBP. Same issue once again.
I tried to remove all copies of Office 2011 from the MBP, but the instructions provided by Microsoft required about three page and seventeen steps and the page was somehow corrupted and would not print in its entirety, nor would it e-mail as anything other than a link to the corrupted page. Not trusting my memory, I decided not to try this without adult supervision.
I used Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions, as described on an existing thread regarding the same problem, but to no avail.
I removed and later replaced the "Microsoft User Data" folder from the Documents folder, but that was no help.
I have copied the short version of the "Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0," below, for those of you with a deeper knowledge of the internal workings, or non-workings of things Mac when crossed with things MS.

What happens when you drag it?
Make sure the drive you are moving the files to has enough available space to receive the file:
Click on the movie file and go to File > Get Info and note the "size"
Check the drive to which you are moving the file to make sure it has enough available space: https://idisk.me.com/madisonfile-Public/web/finder-drive-available-space-and-for mat.html
Also note the format of the drive you are copying too. If it is not Mac OS Extended or FAT (not recommended unless you are taking it to a windows computer) then that may be the issue.

I hope you deactivated them before you formatted you disk. You should just install them line in the past. If you had two activation for them and did not deactivate one for each product you will need Adobe Customer Support's help activating the products.

At the moment my macbook pro has 4GB of memory installed and (450 of) 500GB of storage. I'm having quite a bit of issues due to the amount of space I have left.
I am mainly using Adobe photoshop (Digital Painting) and 3D Autodesk Software (specific:Maya) and will be using it for University (ALOT!) These softwares take a huge chunk of memory when using plus rendering etc. Now, the speed is very slow when doing small projects.
Also, my question is whether having 16gb memory will solve my problem without researching to other things that might help the performance,speed,ram of the macbook pro.
I also know (a little) about SSD which presummally increase speed performance.
I'm not sure if you would call it overkill by having 16gb, personally I don't think it will.
I just need some guidience since I'm not too familiar to finding the best solution out of this?

If you're saying that there's only 50 GB of HD space left, that would be compounding the problem of only having 4GB of RAM because the Mac (and other operating systems) use virtual memory (i.e., paging RAM contents to disk) when physical memory is insufficient and you don't have much of either. Moreover, Photoshop use a cache on disk for processing, and again, there's not much space for that. I'd suggest looking into more RAM (of which you can never have too much) and then an SSD of sufficient size.

Sleeping the iMac at night would work, I'm sure, since it's only on a cold restart that the unplanned restart occurs. Not as satisfying as curing the issue, though.
Apple Hardware Test reported nothing wrong with the graphic card, but the computer is not cold by the time the test is run, so I guess that could still be it.
I'm sure there is dust inside after three + years. Apple didn't really want me to open up my iMac, but this Core 2 Duo model can be opened by lifting off the glass with suction cups, I believe. Maybe I will do that and dust, and see if that helps. There might even be something I can reseat.
Also, I believe that on my next cold startup I will try single user mode and see if that prevents the restart.

Mac doesn't boot
Can you hear the fans and hard drive and see the white boot screen? Flashing question mark? The circle just runs and nothing happens? Only black screen and nothing else? These can be very helpful to diagnose the source of the problem. [1]
Flashing question mark [2]: This is usually a sign of a failed hard drive. This indicates that boot up volume can not be found.
Black screen: This is usually a sign of a failed logic board. There is no single reason for this and this may be caused by failed GPU, screen, CPU or RAM.
Circle of death/no circle/blue screen: This is usually a sign of a hard drive failure. This may NOT be a dead hard drive, just broken permissions or something
Gray screen/Apple logo/spinning gear or globe/prohibitory sign/folder with flashing question mark [3]: This could be a sign of faulty hardware but more likely a software issue, i.e. broken permissions, failed software update, etc.

What to do
First, hold down the option key (also known as the alt key) just after you've pressed the power button. This should show all the available options to boot from, so if you have Windows installed through Bootcamp or a disk in your SuperDrive, you should be able to see them along with your OS X drive/partition. Select the OS X partition with arrow keys and press enter. Startup key combinations
If that doesn't help continue doing the steps from below:
1. SMC reset [4]. Shut down and unplug all cables including power cord for at least 30 seconds and then plug in power cord and keyboard/mouse.
2. PRAM reset [5]. Hold down option, command, P and R while booting. Start it when you hear the sound and don't let go before it reboots.
3. Safe boot [6]. Hold down shift while booting to boot into safe mode. If this works, open Disk Utility from Utilities and repair your permissions and verify the disk
4. Hardware test [7]. Insert the install disk (disk 1 in Mac which shipped with OS X 10.5.4 or earlier, disk 2 if shipped with OS X 10.5.5 or newer) and hold down "D" before the grey boot screen opens. Follow on screen instructions
5. Boot from install disk. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac. Hold C while booting. Select Disk Utility from top bar and repair permissions and verify the disk. Reboot normally and see if it works now.
6. Boot from another Mac (Firewire target disk mode). Connect the machines with a Firewire cable. Power on your Mac and press T. Select the other Mac's hard drive. Download the current OS X combo update. Run the combo update installer and select the drive that won't boot as the destination.
7. "Repair" OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and reinstall OS X. This should NOT erase any data, just replaces the system files which may have caused your booting problem. Now install the latest combo update for OS X and repair permissions on your drive with Disk Utility.
7.1. Install OS X into an external hard drive and then boot from it [8] and try to copy your data from the hard drive before proceeding. If you have done a backup recently, you don't have to do this.
8. Restore OS X from Time Machine backup. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac and choose the Time Machine restore option. This step will lose any changes made since your last backup but the system and your data will be put back to exactly as it was on that date.
8.1 Reinstall OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and select Disk Utility again. Now erase the whole hard drive and install OS X again. If you had a Time Machine backup and step 7 worked you don't have to do this.

Ipad 2 (16GB) memory 13,54 gb instead of 14 gb

Hello I have reset my Ipad 2 and then I Tunes ak me before the reset to dowload 4.3.3. update of IOS.
Strange because my Ipad was up to date. Because I can't go further I have downloaded the 4.3.3. (8J2) update.
After that I can reset my Ipad 2.
Now my memory is less as before. My memory is now 13,54 gb instead of 14 gb.
Do somebody know if this is normal and what is the reason?

Yes I have this problem every time there's a new software update I think Apple needs to come up with a private storage area for all of their updates!!!! I feel if I pay for a 16 GB of memory that should be 16 GB of my memory not apples!!!
Sometimes I can get some memory back by doing a complete reset after doing the software updates and when the device starts again restoring from backup.
