Shocked: No Modem Port!

got a new macbook a few days ago. was unpleasantly surprised to find out there was no modem port on it for dialup connection to the internet. what's the point of that? and what's the solution?

I just discovered this myself...
I have Wireless DSL at my house, but I'm house-sitting for a friend and wanted to check my email. So, my new MacBook Pro in hand, I was ready to use my "back-up dial-up" account (reserved for when DSL goes down or nothing else is available... rare, but it still occurs!) and discovered that there is nowhere to plug in the phone line. So, I had to wait until I could go elsewhere to go online.
Kind of a PITB (and a disappointment)... guess I'll either have to buy an external modem, or use my older laptop for such instances.
Even "on the road": not all hotels have wireless Internet, so I've had to rely upon "old faithful" dialup (with tweaked modem scripts for 112k analog service) on more than one occasion!

  • Si no tengo internet de Banda Ancha sino modem portátil puedo usarlo en TC?  ?

YO no tengo internet de Banda Ancha, sino que me conecto a través de un modem portátil con conexión USB. Puedo por este medio sacar provecho de las opciones que Time Capsule ofrece usando internet? Gracias.

    Bienvenido/a

  • Modem Port on iMac?

I know the intel iMacs don't come with internal modems, but do they have a modem port? I only have dial-up where I live, and my G5 is totally hosed. If I can't hook-up a modem, no mac for me.

The Apple USB modem does not seem to be offered by the Apple Store anymore, at least not the U.S. online store.
However, it is still available from other resellers
    [Apple USB Modem - 56 Kbps Fax / modem|http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=appleusbmodem&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=9832728713848179501&ei=JxDQSvHCLYi6swOqwZDwCw&s a=X&oi=productcatalogresult&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CB4Q8wIwAw#ps-sellers]
There are also similar products from other companies; make sure it is described as working with Mac OS X.
You basically connect the modem, which is more of an adapter, to your iMac's USB port. Connect the other end to the phone line.

  • IMac11,2: How do you use internal modem without a modem port?

This is driving me nuts. How on earth do I dial up somewhere from my iMac, or even send or receive a fax, when there is no modem port to connect my modem lead to, and thus connect the Mac to a phone line?
I rang Applecare but they didn't even seem to know there was an internal modem on the Mac, or even how it used to work with a direct connection to the phone line. They seemed to think I could attach the modem lead to my router. But I rang BT re my Home Hub 3 and they didn't know either. There is no modem socket on the router.
So I searched Apple Support and found a reference on page 11 of the following manual:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iMac_Early2009_UG.pdf
    saying:
"To use a dial-up connection, you need the external Apple USB Modem, available from the online Apple Store at www.apple.com/store or from an Apple Authorized Reseller. Plug the Apple USB Modem into a USB port on your iMac, and then use a phone cord (not included) to connect the modem to a phone jack"
But when I rang the Apple Store they said they didn't sell Apple USB modems. They, too, didn't seem to have any idea of what I was talking about.
I cannot be the only person in the world who wants to dial-up places from their Mac. There are three reasons for wanting direct dial-up:
    1) Sending and receiving faxes
    2) Connecting to a company server via dial-up (and I am talking a major national newspaper here, not a small outfit)
    3) Using a dial-up internet service when the broadband goes down
All very good and important reasons for needing to be able to connect the Mac to the phone line, I am sure you will agree.
But how on earth do I do that now?
    Thanks
    Sarah

    Hi Niel,
    Thanks for the speedy reply.
But my iMac does seem to have an internal modem because it shows up in Network prefs under the list of available connections, and there is still a fax option in System prefs too.

  • No modem port but 2 of RJ-45 Ethernet ports?????

I have MAc Pro Dual Core Intel Xeon, I dont have a modem port is that normal but I have 2 of RJ-45 Ethernet ports, why do I need 2 and what is 2nd RJ-45 Ethernet for, can anyone explain this, thank you very much.

You can buy a Modem if you want one. Apple decided that very few Mac Pro users wanted a Modem, so they dropped it from the standard Hardware. Today, you would probably add a USB modem, if needed.
Two Ethernet ports gives you great flexibility. It can allow you to connect to the internet on one, and to a Storage Area Network (shared Drive Farm) on the other. It can allow you to use the two ports together as a team when connecting to special high-speed networking gear and run at twice Gigabit speeds (this is not for "regular" home or office use). Or it can allow you to extend your Internet connection over the other port to another computer.

  • No modem port

Every time I boot up my G5, 10.5.1 hangs me up stating it cannot connect to the Internet.
I CAN connect to the Internet with any browser and I have an modem I could install but there is no Modem port at all in the back of the computer. Can I replace a Firewire port with a modem port?

Modem port ?? What do you mean by that?
Do you mean analog telephone jack? If so, that is not possible.
I CAN connect to the Internet with any browser...
    So what is the problem?

  • How to use modem port on WRT54GS

Hi,  I have a network like this:
ADSL -> THOMSON wired modem -> LinkSys SR2016 wired switch -> LinkSys WRT54GS wired/wireless router
My problem is with the connecction between the SR2016 -> WRT54GS.  As you probably will know the WRT54GS has 5 ports, one is called 'INTERNET' and the others are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4. According to the documentation of the WRT54GS it should be possible to configure the internet-port (the 5th connector on the back-side) so that it can be connected to another router.I can't get this to work.
My current workaround is to sacrifice one of the 4 router ports to connect to the SR2016. This works well, but takes up 1 wireless channel.
I would like to hear if there are any tips or experiences in this forum to get this working.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If the purpose of the WRT is to provide a wireless access point for your LAN (and not create two separated and protected LANs) then you have to connect the WRT through one of the numbered LAN ports. You also have to turn off the DHCP server on the WRT.

  • Router/modem port opening -ichat not repsonding

    Hi,
I've been over the posts earlier but am not sure how to enter the ports I need to open on my router.
I am using 10.4.5 with iChat AV 3.1.1 and a wireless BT modem (voyager 2091). iChat worked on a different network so I know the Mac is set up OK, the firewall is switched off.
I suspect the router is not forwarding the ports correctly to my computer but the ISP/router providers won't go through the router setup with me because "they don't support Mac".
Can anyone advise me how to fill in the port forwarding configuration in the router? I have tried portforwarding.com but there is no indication of where to put all the port numbers. I have the option to choose TCP, UDP or both; I then need to fill the ports under the headings "External Packet" (both port start and port end) and "Forward to Internal Host" (again, both port start and port end).
Does anyone have any advice? Thanks, Susan

    Hi Susan,
The BT 2091 does not seem to have UPnP according to this set up page
Use this page to gain the info on how to access the device in a web browser.
AS this device as start ports and end ports you should have several lines with just one port in them at each box.
The group of 20 (16384-16403) needs those two ports as start (16384) and end ports (16403).

  • Modem port unable to open

    Hi,
I have recently hit a bum note with my MEGA 180. The modem wont open the port it is on anymore. I get a Windows error (639 or something like that)
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but to no avail.
It seems like the modem was never sent the termination command the last time it was used. Is there anyway to recover from this? Have tried resetting the CMOS but that didnt work.
The last time this happened, I re-imaged my machine using Norton Ghost, but I have so much installed since my last backup, I'd prefer to fix the issue directly.
Any question for more details, please forward them along.

My is a Smart Link 56K Modem. Try www.smlink.com and see if you can find some new drivers.
    Richard
Mine too, and I have the same problem... or had, for the moment it dials but it doesn't communicate... is the modem a module or intergrated with the mainbord?

  • Hyper-V locks up PCI modem port on host machine

I have a Windows 2008 Server with a PCI US Robotics Fax/Modem card installed.  Additionally, this Win2008 Server is running a virtual machine (Hyper-V) that is configured to be an SQL server.
When the virtual machine is OFF.  I have no issues with the Fax/Modem on the host.
As soon as I start the VM, I cannot query my modem and all Fax/Modem functions stop working.  The issue is the COM3 Port assigned to the Fax/Modem is being opened and never released by the VM.  As soon as I stop the VM, all Fax/Modem functionality
returns to normal and I can open COM3 and query the modem.
    Thanks, Jim

I installed a USB Modem (Creative Modem Blaster).  This has the same issue; actually both modems have the same issue (I left the internal US Robotics modem installed).
Not all VMs are stealing my modems.  I have a Server with about 5 VMs and none of the VM's are stealing my modem.  I installed another VM that is being used as a domain controller and this VM does not steal my modem.  BUT, this one VM is stealing
any modem I connect except a modem connected to the serial port.
The VM in question is running SQL server under a cluster with 2 nodes.  It is using 3 of the 4 NICs, 4 CPUs and 8GM of RAM.
Does anyone know of any reason a VM would grab a hold of a modem and not let it go?

  • Has Portege 7010ct modem port?

Does the 7010ct have a built in modem?
If yes, where is the interface.
If not, I assume I need to buy one and slot it into the slot 0 or 1 on the left hand side. Assume they are all compatible?
    Thanks

    Hello
I have found information that your unit has no internal modem. You are right about PCMCIA option. I dont believe that there should be any problem using PCMCIA solution.
    Good luck!

  • Mega 180 modem

I am trying to reinstall windows xp pro on my mega 180.  I was attempting to get the modem to work.  I hooked up the modem drivers and they seem to be working.  But when ever i try to use the dail up connection it tells me that there is a conflict or that the modem is already running.  Any help??????????????????

I have had a similar problem.
My modem has intermittently given me an error when attempting to dial to the internet.
It says, Error 693. Modem Port already open.....yada yada yada.
I have reset the CMOS jumper on the mobo.
    I have reinstalled the modem.
I have re-updated the modem drivers.
    Nothing seems to work.
The Hardware manager for the modem says there are no conflicts, the modem is on the mobo, so I dont know why all of a sudden it develops such a problem.
:shocking:Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • [solved] Using a phone as a 3G modem

    Hi!
I have a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and I'm trying to use it as a 3g modem with my laptop.
I went to the appropriate wiki page, installed usb_modeswitch and wvdial packages. When I plug in the phone via a USB cable, the lsusb command shows the following output:

Ok, never mind. I switched the phone to PC suite mode while connecting, and looked at the last few lines in /var/log/messages.log. Surprisingly, the modem showed up in /dev/ttyACM0:
usb 2-3: USB disconnect, address 7
usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 2-3: USB disconnect, address 8
usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
    cdc_acm 2-3:1.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
Then I ran wvdialconf, edited the config manually to enter my mobile service provider specific settings, fired up wvdial, and voila, I have access to mobile internet. Thanks for the help anyway. Cheers!

  • Ethernet cable wont fit into imacs ethernet port.

    Hello.
    I feel like an idiot.
I have build pc's and have my own network at home.
And for some reason i cant fit my ethernet cable into the imac.
I just bought this imac so its the new g5 w/isight.
The plug only goes half way in and then stops.
I have tried all my cables in the house.
Even the pc and all my networked computers.
    Can someone help me.
I love my new imac but i want to hook the new imac to the network.
    Thanks
    Al

There's always the chance that you could be trying to
plug into the modem port. It's easy to do, as they're
pretty similar in shape. The ethernet port is
typically distinguishable by being a bit larger than
the modem port, though they are rather too similar!
I would have suggested that as well, however this user posted that he has the new iMac with built-in iSight camera. This model does not have a built-in modem.
Additionally, the user claimed that the connector would go in about half-way. If it was a RJ-11 port, an RJ-45 connector would never get that far
