Shooting and lens recommendations for Historic Cities, cityscapes, etc...

I'm currently trying to build my lens collection, and would love some advice on the "necessities" for the types of photography I plan to do.
I currently have:
1.  Canon SL1
2.  Canon T3i
..and I'm looking at either getting an EOS 60D or waiting til later on in the year to see if there's something else coming along.
My lens collection so far is:
1.  EF-S 10-22mm
2.  EF 28-135mm
3.  EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III
4.  EF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM
In the next few months, I'll need to shoot outdoor situations (wilderness, camping/hiking, exploration) and Historic city/Historic Tourism type cityscapes.
I've noticed my current Lens library is limited in supporting that second one.  I guess I need to move down or to several different types of lenses.  Lately I've been using the 10-22 and the 28-135 when there's enough "room" for me to shoot.
I'd like to get very creative/artistic with my shots.  The historic cities I need to photograph are very "compact" (tight) and are really hard to get full shots of buildings, or landscape shots of city blocks.  narrow alleys and street ways.
The cities i'm in are in the Southern United States, and lots of harsh light.
I'd LOVE some recommendations on lenses, as well as any tips on shooting buildings/statues/historic landmarks in cramped city situations!

Hi JustOmi!
I ran across this while moderating today and thought you might find it interesting. He happens to mention your exact shooting scenario!
EF-101: Fisheye Lens
I hope that helps!

  • Canon 40D vs. 50D, and lens recommendation?

My client will buy her adult daughter a new Canon in the next day or two and I am assisting with the purchase; problem is that I am a Nikon user who needs some Canon advice.
Her daughter requested a 40D, but ignoring price the 50D seems far preferable to me. Am I missing something? Note that cost is generally not an essential concern, and only these two cameras will be considered.
The second issue is which lens? The gift needs to include a lens. IMO kit lenses do not do justice to the capture capability of a 50D, but I am guessing that as a gift to an amateur photog the very best glass is too high end. Costs are approx.
    Body only ~$1086
    with 28-135is USM ~$1280, 19 oz.
    with 18-200is ~$1610, 21 oz.
    with 17-85is USM ~$1526, 17 oz.
    Some other lens...
So what does everyone think? Assume that the user's skill level is smart, advancing amateur.
    TIA

    Allen
For a beginning DSLR photographer, I would recommend the EF 17-85mm IS USM. I have one and mine takes tack sharp pictures with a Canon Rebel XSi. It is good for people pictures and it is the lens I use for flowers and landscapes. The automatic focus is relatively fast and accurate. Later on, when she is more experienced, she can get a longer lens, depending on the type of pictures she wants to take. Longer lenses for DSLR beginners can be difficult to manage and disappointing if the results are not as expected..
    Good luck and Merry Christmas!

  • XSLT and XQuery recommendation for BPEL and OSB

    Hi,
    1. Why is XQuery recommeded for OSB and XSLT for BPEL. Are there any specific performance optimization reason behind this.
    2. Apart from OSB and BPEL, both XSLT and XQuery has xml transformation options and creating HTML. What is the difference between these two.
    Thanks in advance!

you can create the graphical view of Xquery in Eclipse but not for XSLT
Xquery is much faster than XSLT in OSB.
Through XSLT however you can achieve more complex transformation.
OSB has its historic origins in BEA Aqalogic stable and so Xquery was widely used used even though XSLT is supported. It is a matter of choice(your standards in your organization, your developer skillsets, your re-usable libraries etc )
In Jdeveloper you can develop xslt in graphical mode though and attain complex transformation

  • I am thinking of using a Mac pro for share trading. Can anyone share their experience and suggest specs for 30 -40 monitors etc

    Hi
I am thinking of using a Mac Pro for share trading.
I am proposing to start small but want to be able to expand up to 30+ monitors.
    It must be super quick.
Any help with hardware would be appreciated.
Software is secondary at this point , but open to advice.
I have an iphone and ipad so feel it will better intergrate usung Apple
    regards
    David

There is no desktop machine that I know of that will support 30+ monitors as is.
Fill the 3 or 4 PCIe slots of any logic board with three port graphics cards and you have the physical cap without additional hardware.
Software is secondary at this point
No, without software, how can you control more than the monitor limit of the OS?
How can you set up the monitors to display the various programs that you will wish to use simultaneously?
    Software is a major consideration.
Matrox (and others) have solutions for additional monitors beyond the physical capabilities of generally offered graphics cards.
The caveat here, however, is support software is typically reserved for Windows and Linux systems.
Matrox has a single 8 display card:
    http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/m_series/m9188pciex16/
Matrox has solutions specifically targeting the finance market:
    http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/solutions/trading_analyst/
Though the Mac Pro has more than adequate processing power, I think that you will find (through research) that building a solid machine capable of using several multi monitor cards is going to be what you will need to support more than 8-10 monitors with conventionally offered hardware.
    Fun stuff:

  • What system do you recommend for FCP work?

Modern iMacs are pretty powerfull now, and the price jump to the pro's is high.
What limitations would there be in using a 27" iMac with the new i5 CPU and say 8GB $200 upgrade instead of a Mac Pro?

Not sure why, but I feel the need to chime in here -- this is a very interesting topic. Of course as others have said, it depends on the work you will be doing more than anything else, but I'll tell you what I have, and what I do, and how the system performs.
    - MacBook Pro, 15", 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, 500GB 7200 RPM internal HD, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT (performance mode), Apple Cinema Display at 1920x1200, SD slot, 8x internal DVD-R/W
    - Seagate 1TB FW800 external HD for Time Machine
    - FCS 3 (FCP7, Motion4, Soundtrack Pro 3)
    - Adobe Master Collection CS4
    - Canon XH-A1s
    - Canon Vixia HV30
    - Lowel Light Kit (3 Tota, 1 Omni, 1 Rifa)
    - Sennheiser Shotgun Mic
    - Shure wireless lavs and wireless hand-held microphones
    - Libec tripods
The whole rig, top to bottom, was around $15k.
I'm a one-man shop for a good size health systems research company in Washington, DC. I produce videos for presentation on the web and sometimes DVD. This doesn't come close to comparing with broadcast or film work, but I would still call it "professional," if not "high-end." I do work for many well-known federal government agencies, and the demand for quality is surprisingly high.
I'm portable (out of necessity), and I can do some good work quick with just my MB Pro, a few of the lights in a soft bag, and the A1. I can sling that whole rig over (both) my shoulders and get into a cab or on a plane and shoot anywhere they need me to.
I usually shoot in HDV, 30F (Canon), and I output 800k H.264 files for the web and government intranets. They look great. As we know, it's all about the lighting and knowing how to use your camera. I also do a lot of animations in Motion, and I "round trip" the audio to STP, even with all its minor quirks.
The system works flawlessly. Perfect. I edit from the internal drive(!), and I capture to the internal drive from either camera, connected through the external drive with a 9-pin to 6-pin cable. When I can, I shoot straight to the MB Pro and run a tape as a backup. Capture works perfectly too - never had a problem with either camera. Common FCP filters run in real-time in Safe RT, very little timeline rendering, and Compressor runs in the background quite often along with FCP, Motion, STP, Firefox, and Mail all open at once.
This is definitely not a high end system -- I understand that -- but it works great. I don't have a single complaint. And unless I'm mistaken, the iMac you're thinking about getting is faster than my MB Pro, and with comparable ports and I/O. And I would not hesitate for a second to shoot and produce something for commercial DVD delivery.
Would I like to have a Mac Pro? Of course, and I might order one later this year. But I love the portability of my system, and it gets the job done very nicely. On several occasions I have edited and posted videos, making last minute changes, from hotel rooms while on location around the country, and I can easily take my work home with me. Love it. And BTW, the Cinema Display is absolutely beautiful.
Personally, I think it's too easy for us sometimes to bash Apple and their odd decisions with their hardware as it pertains to video production (one FW bus, SD slot, etc.), but really, this system is great. I enjoy sitting down at it every day because I know my machine will do everything I ask it to, and it will not crash. Never has.
Compressor renders could be faster, but we can all probably say that.
On a side note - I have a modern, very fast ThinkPad that my company insisted on getting me. I never use it except for capturing into Vegas while I'm editing on the Mac. And I can tell you this: I am SO glad that all I have to use the PC for is capture! I'm thankful for my little Mac system. If I had to edit video on a PC I would find another career.
Good luck with your decision, but you're already heading down the right path with Mac and FCS. You'll be happy.
    Okay, back to work...

  • Specific hardware recommendations for PE12, Graphics for Win8.1

We are upgrading our video processing system from Win XP 32bit/ PE10.  I plan on going to PE12 and need better recommendations for CPU, Graphics, Memory, etc than the Tech/Specs recommendations. Most importantly, does PE12 use GPU acceleration?

Not so much here, but over in the Premiere Pro forum several Adobe employees post to help people
I can't remember which one, but at least one Adobe employee has "alluded" to the idea that the specifications on the product pages are "market" driven to increase sales, not "technical" driven to let people know what they should have for EFFECTIVE video editing
The 1st configuration on the page I listed will work OK for P-Elements (it would not work so well for P-Pro)
When you do start using v12, lots of help links at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1275830

  • Book Recommendation for Fathers Day?

I'm waiting for Illustrator CS4 Wow! to come out here in the UK as my next book purchase and I already have a couple of basic manual replacement books which I am steadily ploughing through.  I wonder if anyone could suggest a couple of titles I could give to my kids to distract them from the inevitible cheap aftershave alternative?
I would like either a book that discusses more intermediate issues in Illy rather than the kind of very basic manual replacement books or if you're up for it, suggest a couple of illustration techniques that might be useful and help with my drawing.  I realised pretty quickly that a) Photoshop isn't good at taking your photos, b) Dreamweaver isn't that good at writing your code and c) Illustrator isn't up to drawing your drawings - Maybe a clickable "Inspiration Panel" should be a feature request?
So either any recommendations for drawing techniques that would be useful for digital art and/or recommendations for interemediate level Illustrator techniques?
    Many thanks
    Martin

Thanks for the suggestion but that's one of the books I already have
and think it's one of the best Adobe Software help books I have out of
all of them.  It's really well written and covers a lot of material in
a practical way.  The other Illustrator book I have is by Deke
McClelland which I find to be more like a reference manual than Mordy
    Golding's.

  • What happened to the File, Edit, and View menus for mac 0s10.8.3? f10 and other solutions don't work?esn't work

I just got a new mac OS 10.8.3 and newest firefox. I can't find the menus bar, I can't close it without force quiting, can't even tell what version I have. Everytime I try to use the arrows to change the view as suggested full screen makes it worse. I have researched the subject and tried recommended fixes like F10, optionF, etc. and nothing is working. Please help?

The menus have been ported to the top left corner, it says Firefox and has its icon, that is the new menu. If you dont like it and want the old one you have to.
    # Right Click the tab bar
    # Context menu should show
    # Click "Menu Bar"
and you now have the menu back.

  • Recommendation for correct wide angle lens and flash for real estate photos for Canon Rebel T3i?

Hi I'm new to the forum. I always hire out a professional photog for my real estate photos however have thought that with the amount that I pay them, I could buy my own wide angle lens to do on my own.
Any recommendations for what wide angle lens and flash to buy?
Here are some examples of the work they have done in the past for me:
Any advice would be much appreciated. I enjoy amateur photography with my family and portraits but am hoping to be able to do more of my own work on my listings. Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Your samples look like incredibility simple images to do. I also suspect little artificial light was added. Possibly just a bounce off the ceiling.
Since you already have a Rebel T3i, I would get the Canon 430 EX, and just one. But be aware it will likely not provide equal coverage for a 10-22mm lens. Ten millimeters is pretty wide even on a T3i. Bouncing off the ceiling will help this.
Some ceilings may not be good for bounce either.
Give it a go and you will learn what works and what not. But the old saying, KISS, applies.  You will learn!
Photshop and/or Lightroom are great additions. They both have learning curves and PS a very long learning curve.
Still think your photographer is overpaid?
    EOS 1Ds Mk III, EOS 1D Mk IV EF 50mm f1.2 L, EF 24-70mm f2.8 L,
    EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX APO
    Photoshop CS6, ACR 8.7, Lightroom 5.7

  • CANON G12: screen and lens trouble shooting please?

    Hi there!
I am hoping someone can help me out.
I get this dark line on the lef side of my screen + on the actual photos.
I also have an auto-focus problem now, when zooming closer to subjects it's unable to perform.
The store says it could be a small hair caught in the lens and that Canon would charge me 200-250 euros to fix it.
    Is that what it is?
Did someone ever get the same problem?
    How was it fixed?
    See an example : http://imgur.com/g0FeXMH
I love using that camera - many thanks for your help!!!

One question I would ask is are you sure the lens cover is opening all the way? I had a similar line on my PowerShot A series camera. The lens did not fully open on the one side due to some fine particles of dirt in the lens mechanism. I used some compressed air for electronics and cleaned that dirt out of the mechanism, which resolved the issue.
However, if you are having focus issues, it sounds like there could be something like a hair stuck in the barrel of the lens, but for it to show a line on the images, that could be near the filter that protects the image sensor or inside the lens. I would think the camera needs to be opened to inspect the sensor as well as the lens. If the hair is indeed inside the lens, between the glass elements, that would be an expensive repair as the lens would need to be aligned after it was cleaned. If it's at the sensor, it should be a less expensive repair. Are you using the macro mode when you are shooting the close ups? Maybe you're getting a little too close. I tried zooming in for close up shots, but needed to use closeup filters because I was getting too close. Plus, I have accidently left the macro mode on when I didn't need it, and of course the camera would not focus properly. Just asking.

  • FCP Workflow recommendations for dual SD and HD delivery

What would be the best workflow for this scenario: I need to shoot in 1080p 23.97 and deliver in both SD and HD. I would like to shoot with a Sony HD900. I don't have the fastest/largest drives....using Lacie and G-Tech 800 and 400 Firewire drives. Is it best to have my footage ingested using a ProRes 422 codec for offline? Any other recommendations? Thanks

400 Firewire and 1080p could have problems playing nice. It could work but your system will mostly have issues with the system being able to play the footage off the drive without any pauses or hiccups. This will be especially evident when you have drives daisy chained together.
I would edit in HD and then convert your HD final sequence to SD. A Kona card will do an excellent job of this if you are going to tape.
Compressor can fulfill any web needs. As far as Compressor converting HD to SD for DVD I have found it to be consistently inconsistent. Sometimes it looks awesome, sometimes it doesn't. You can play with frame controls but render times will go up considerably.
Worse case scenario we have down-converted HD to SD tape with a Kona card and then encoded for DVD with a hardware encoding card or rolled it back in to FC SD and then exported via Compressor.

  • Is the MacBook Air recommended for working with RAW photographs using Aperture or Lightroom and perhaps Photoshop?

Is the MacBook Air recommended for working with RAW photographs in Aperture and Photoshop, or do I need a more powerful MacBook ?   The relative lack of weight of the AIr is what attracts me to it.

For doing Photography with RAW files in either Aperture or Photoshop, the new MacBook Air is fine, but for Photoshop CS6 some of the filters and plugins really need a better graphics card and plenty of RAM.
You'll also want an external disk if you are going to be doing lots of shooting.
    Summary:
Yes, you can use an air but you'll want external storage and at least 8GB of ram.
Or go MacBook Pro with 16GB ram with the 650M card.

  • Is there a lens profile for Samyang 14mm and Canon 5D2 ?

    Hi !
I'm thinking about buying a new Samyang / Rokinon / Bower etc 14mm wide angle full frame lens.
However, this lens has bad moustache distortion on stills images - not good for architecture.
Is there an Adobe lens profile for Adobe Camera Raw (Photoshop CS6 Bridge) for full frame Canon 5D2 / 3 or 1Ds 3 etc ?
It's needed for Mac - don't know if there is any difference.
Advice before I buy would be much appreciated ...

Yay that's great news ... and thanks for such a speedy reply.
Didn't know about the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader ... so have just downloaded it for Mac and found the lens profile.
Appreciate your help ... it'll hopefully be great for correcting the distorion i need.
