Shooting for Colormetric Accuracy of Fine Artwork

Good Morning,
I have been shooting pieces of artwork for my clients with a 5D mk2 and have been striving for better color accuracy. I have been using the Colorchecker to generate DNG Profiles for the camera in my studio. When I open images in ACR and I set my tonal values to specific values to match the chart I get drastically different numbers on the info pallete in PS CS5 than on the tone curve in ACR. I do have Photoshop set to use ProPhoto RGB in 16bit. Why is this happening and how can I solve this?
Thank you,
Brandon

Well, my knowledge about color science and color management is actually quite limited. Someone with better knowledge about this relatively complex subject would probably give you better or more accurate advice than me
From what I know, typical workflow with digital camera is to transform a capture of the scene to an image that would be displayed on the monitor or printed on the paper. Since dynamic range and color gamut of the scene is usually way larger than of the monitor or paper, image has to be severely tweaked ("rendered") to get pleasant result, while colorimetric accuracy is not very important. This typically involves compressing of the highlights with a tone curve and and some changes of hue and saturation with a big 3D lookup table (+ whitebalancing and changes of color space)
If I understand correctly, what you need is to use your 5D as a kind of scanner, to accurately capture a "scene" that is already on the "output media" with limited dynamic range and color gamut and under controlled lighting. So, these rendering tweaks have to be relatively small, just to compensate for some nonlinearity in the whole process. In other words, tone curve of the whole process should be close to linear and lookup table mustn't introduce huge hue/saturation/brightness shifts
To get linear tone curve of the whole ACR pipeline, you need:
- profile with linear tone curve
- ACR settings: brightness +50, contrast +25, tone curve = medium-contrast
- about blacks slider, default value is said to be +5, while my experiments shown me that it has to be 0, so I'm not sure
- other sliders like saturation, vibrancy, recover, fill light etc should be 0

i am using sharepoint 2010 and windows authentication
recently i have updated my ie to ie11 and problem goes here.
when i try to select from people picker, there are an unexpected error happened
however when i use other ie version, people picker work fine, what goes wrong?
i have already added my system as trusted site
if there any others thing i miss out?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that People picker is not working for ie11 but working fine for other lower version.
IE 11 is known to have compatibility issues on SharePoint 2010, please make sure to:
first of all, try installing latest update for IE 11 (several compatibility issues were fixed since the first release)
add the site to compatibility view (in IE> Tools> Compatibility view settings> type site name> add)
add the site to trusted sites and set the zone security level to low (in IE> Internet Options> Security> trusted sites> sites>add your site there> ok> custom level> select low> reset> ok)
You can use developer tools (f12) and set browser mode to the version that is most compatible with your environment.

this is what you need to do to exclude everything apart from desktop.
on time machine preferences, click on Options
click plus sign, on the new window, click macintosh HD
do a Control + A then deselect users then click okay
go to options again, plus sign, go to users, control +A then deselect your user account
go to options again, plus sign, go to your user account, control + A, deselect desktop
    start the back up.

How do you access "trouble shoot" for mail.  Our AOL account is set up on the mail icon but somehow it defaulted onto another nearby Wifi account while everything else that was running stayed on our router.  We were unable to receive email on the AOL account and were directed to trouble shoot.  We reset the Wifi account but somehow didn't save it correctly.  Now we cannot get back in to reset it again.  Direction??

    Hello
I don't really understand your question. The Mail application cannot independently access a different wifi network from the one your computer is using.
Are you trying to troubleshoot your wifi (ie, you can't get into your own wireless network), or the Mail program (you can't get email)? Are there any error messages you see when you try to do one or the other?

  • Shooting for the best color capture.

Would anyone be kind enough to direct me to a resource (book, DVD, on-line forum) where I could better learn to shoot my videos with accurate color capture? I video ballet performances using 3 or 4 Panasonic DVX 100b cameras ( I am a hobbiestnot a pro). I struggle with coordinating the colors between the cameras during editing. I use the 3-way Color Corrector way too much and the results are never satisfying.
I white balance all the cameras to a large white sheet held up on stage prior to the performances but otherwise use mostly automatic settings on the cameras. One time I used the 30p scene file setting ("F4") on the cameras and it was a disaster--totally over-exposed. I was depressed. I rent the cameras. The folks at the video gear rental place are wonderfully knowledgeable about the gear but not so good with shooting issues.
I realize that this isn't the proper forum for this but I have looked around (LarryJordan.biz, Moviola, etc.) and not had any luck finding answers.
I would be very willing to read a book if a good one exists on this subject.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

Manually white balancing is fine but if the image settings on the cameras are mismatched, you'll end up with well, what you're ending up with.
First of all, never use auto-iris. Second of all, never use the automatic settings on anything on that camera because you're also enabling the auto white tracking which changes every time there is a lighting cue.
If you have a good relationship with your rental house, you need to have them chart at least one of these cameras with a DSC Labs chart or if they don't have one of those, you can use any 9 or 11 step grayscale to dial in your white balance and an NTSC bar chart to dial in the color matrix. Chart one cam and then carry those settings to the others and hope they match or come close.
If this isn't available, zero everything. NEVER EVER EVER EVER NEVER trust scene file settings for anything on rental cameras. You need to go over those with a fine tooth comb as some loser before you who fancies himself the next Cecil B. and is shooting his next Magnum Opus but doesn't know diddley-squat about video cranked in some settings and then saved to any scene file number.
Zero everything to the factory defaults and you'll kind of have matching cams although I would still find the time to chart all of them before the shoot. Just be aware the Panasonic's factory scene file settings for NTSC video look terrible, pitifull in fact. The master ped is set so high that the black level is floating in the clouds somewhere.
This ain't contained in no book.

  • D750 "unexpected end of file" for NEF that loads fine into Capture NX-D

I have a NEF that produces an "unexpected end of file" error in both Lightroom 5.7 and PS CC (both with Camera Raw 8.7). The same NEF loads and converts fine in Nikon's Capture NX-D V1.0.2. The NEF also converts fine into a JPEG using the D750's in-camera NEF processing function. I can provide the NEF to Adobe for analysis.

"Btw @engerim, any chance you were using both SD card slots on your D750 when you got this NEF and had them configured in backup mode? If so I'd like to see the same NEF from the other card if you have it."
    Tried the following this morning:
Menu -> Photo shooting menu -> Role played by card in Slot 2 = Backup (second option)
Then I started an interval shooting with 200 images, and went for breakfast ;-)
Normally one would expect the images are 100% the same in both slots (checked with md5sum) but they are not (this makes this a bit more difficult).
Anyhow when opening the images in Camera Raw the images affected by this issue ("unexpected end of file" error) were the exact same files in both slots. All other images were fine in both slots. Files are here: http://stuff.inxsoft.net/tmp/d750-raw-with-issues.zip
All images included in the zip have the problem except DSC_4078.NEF (which I included for reference and it will also allow you to see the difference in checksums in both slots). Anyhow we can rule out its an SD Card issue or buffer issue.

  • PXI 2527 & PXI 4071 -Questions about EMF considerations for high accuracy measurements and EMF calibration schemes?

    Hi!
I need to perform an in-depth analysis of the overall system accuracy for a proposed system. I'm well underway using the extensive documentation in the start-menu National Instruments\NI-DMM\ and ..\NI-Switch\ Documenation folders...
While typing the question, I think I partially answered myself while cross-referencing NI documents... However a couple of questions remain:
If I connect a DMM to a 2 by X arranged switch/mux, each DMM probe will see twice the listed internal "Differential thermal EMF" at a typical value of 2.5uV and a max value of less than 12uV (per relay). So the total effect on the DMM uncertainty caused by the switch EMF would be 2*2.5uV = 5uV? Or should these be added as RSS: = sqrt(2.5^2+2.5^2) since you can not know if the two relays have the same emf?
Is there anything that can be done to characterize or account for this EMF (software cal, etc?)?
    For example, assuming the following:
    * Instruments and standards are powered on for several hours to allow thermal stability inside of the rack and enclosures
    * temperature in room outside of rack is constant
Is there a reliable way of measureing/zeroing the effect of system emf? Could this be done by applying a high quality, low emf short at the point where the DUT would normally be located, followed by a series of long-aperture voltage average measurements at the lowest DMM range, where the end result (say (+)8.9....uV) could be taken as a system calibration constant accurate to the spec's of the DMM?
What would the accuracy of the 4071 DMM be, can I calculate it as follows, using 8.9uV +-700.16nV using 90 days and 8.9uV +- 700.16nV + 150nV due to "Additional noise error" assuming integration time of 1 (aperture) for ease of reading the chart, and a multiplier of 15 for the 100mV range. (Is this equivalent to averaging a reading of 1 aperture 100 times?)
So, given the above assumptions, would it be correct to say that I could characterize the system EMF to within  8.5uV+- [700.16nV (DMM cal data) + 0.025ppm*15 (RMS noise, assuming aperture time of 100*100ms = 10s)] = +-[700.16nV+37.5nV] = +- 737.66nV? Or should the ppm accuracy uncertainties be RSS as such: 8.5uV +- sqrt[700.16nV^2 + 37.5nV^2] = 8.5uV +-701.16nV??
As evident by my above line of thought, I am not at all sure how to properly sum the uncertainties (I think you always do RSS for uncertainties from different sources?) and more importantly, how to read and use the graph/table in the NI 4071 Specifications.pdf on page 3. What exactly does it entail to have an integration time larger than 1? Should I adjust the aperture time or would it be more accurate to just leave aperture at default (100ms for current range) and just average multiple readings, say average 10 to get a 10x aperture equivalent?
The below text includes what was going to be the post until I think I answered myself. I left it in as it is relevant to the problem above and includes what I hope to be correct statements. If you are tired of reading now, just stop, if you are bored, feel free to comment on the below section as well.
The problem I have is one of fully understanding part of this documenation. In particular, since a relay consists of (at least) 2 dissimilar metal junctions (as mentioned in the NI Switch help\Fundamentals\General Switching Considerations\Thermal EMF and Offset Voltage section) and because of the thermo-couple effect (Seebeck voltage), it seems that there would be an offset voltage generated inside each of the relays at the point of the junction. It refeers the "Thermocouple Measurements" section (in the same help document) for further details, but this is where my confusion starts to creep up.
In equation (1) it gives the expression for determining E_EMF which for my application is what I care about, I think (see below for details on my application).
What confuses me is this: If my goal is to, as accurately as possible, determine the overall uncertainty in a system consisting of a DMM and a Switch module, do I use the "Differential thermal EMF" as found in the switch data-sheet, or do I need to try and estimate temperatures in the switch and use the equation?
*MY answer to my own question:
By carefully re-reading the example in the thermocouple section of the switch, I realized that they calculate 2 EMF's, one for the internal switch, calculated as 2.5uV (given in the spec sheet of the switch as the typical value) and one for the actual thermocouple. I say actual, because I think my initial confusion stems from the fact that the documenation talks about the relay/switch junctions as thermocouples in one section, and then talks about an external "probe" thermocouple in the next and I got them confused.
As such, if I can ensure low temperatures inside the switch at the location of the junctions (by adequate ventilation and powering down latching relays), I should be able to use 2.5uV as my EMF from the switch module, or to be conservative, <12uV max (from data sheet of 2527 again).
I guess now I have a hard time believeing the 2.5uV typical value listed.. They say the junctions in the relays are typically an iron-nickel alloy against a copper-alloy. Well, those combinations are not explicitly listed in the documenation table for Seebeck coefficients, but even a very small value, like 0.3uV/C adds up to 7.5uV at 25degC. I'm thinking maybe the table values in the NI documentation reffers to the Seebeck values at 25C?

Seebeck EMV needs temperature gradients , in your relays you hopefully have low temperature gradients ... however in a switching contact you can have all kind diffusions and 'funny' effects, keeping them on same temperature is the best you can do.
Since you work with a multiplexer and with TCs, you need a good Cold junction ( for serious calibrations at 0°C ) and there is the good place for your short cut to measure the zero EMV. Another good test is loop the 'hot junction' back to the cold junction and observe the residual EMV.  Touching (or heating/cooling) the TC loop gives another number for the uncertainty calculation: the inhomogeneous material of the TC itself..
A good source for TC knowledge:

    retained,

  • Is there a way to have one main cover artwork for an album that has artwork for each song?

For example The Fall by Gorillaz has unique artwork for each song but when I'm in album view it only shows the artwork for the first song not the actual cover of the album. I'm wondering if there's a way for it to display the actual album cover in album view and the artwork for each song when it's actually playing.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • No backlight for one user, but fine for another

One of my students' iBooks has no backlight when he is logged in, although the screen is fine when logged in as a teacher. When I go in the student's prefs, the brightness slider in the display settings doesn't do anything. It slides back and forth, but nothing changes. Also, F1 and F2 don't do anything. The sun icon shows up and the bars work properly, but nothing happens to the screen. I reset the PMU and that didn't do anything. I'm not the administrator for these school computers, so my access is somewhat limited (ie, I can't get into the terminal), but our tech guy can't figure this out. He thinks the student sabotaged the settings, but I can't figure out what he could have done.
And my eyes are killing me from trying to look at this dim screen! Help!

Could the student have set a 'dim screen image' as a full screenshot
and have that load as a startup item so it's on there until certain key
commands are used to revert to a normal desktop? Sometimes a
person can just use Preview and put it on full screen to make the
real Finder/Desktop quite hard to access or use, unless you know it.
I've found I can set almost anything as a desktop. One item that would
have someone wondering, is an image of my desktop with iTunes on.
There is a menu bar and a Dock on the far right side; the rest of the
screen is iTunes in Visualizer, to the edges. This, as a full screen
capture, leaves one the impression the whole desktop has frozen.
The same could be done with almost any image; even a black one.
I've not tried to get an image to load this way as a startup item in
a user account. But I think it could be done; perhaps in single user.
Though I doubt it could be as simple as this, the answer may be
something surprisingly uncomplicated to do; harder to resolve.
There may be a way to (as an Admin) remove the dysfunctional
user account entirely; perhaps even save some of the settings to
a new account, or possibly a student's work, if actually needed.
Limiting lesser user accounts to a few applications and not give
them access to change much of anything is a feature in OS X.
In any event, hope the issue gets worked out OK.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Is there not a way for ITunes to know the Artwork and download it??

    This is absolutely crazy!!!
All of my other music file cataloging applications know how to go out to the internet based on the tags and retreve the album artwork automatically.
Why is it that ITunes cannot?

*Um... my library is not maintained in ITunes.*
    I didn't say it was.
*ITunes should be smart enaough to read the existing tags*
    It is and it does.
But your previous application is not smart enough to put the artwork into the ID3 artwork tag. Instead it dumps it in a folder.
and have the ability to download the artwork to each file if it cannot read the album artwork from the folder... make sense?
Yes, but you don't want to allow iTunes to do this because it requires signing up for an iTunes account.
You will have to copy the artwork and paste it into the ID3 tags yourself.
Or find another application to do it for you.
