Shooting HD for SD

We are in the process to begin acquiring in HD for future archive and production needs. In the mean time, we're still editing in SD (DVCAM/Firewire) for day to day operations.
I'm trying to figure out the best shooting format and work-flow for the best quality in SD land.
Currently using the JVC GY-HM700 which allows the ability to shoot in many formats - 1920 x 1080 (1080p24/p25/p30, 1080i60/i50), 1280 x 720P (p60/p50/p30/p25/p24).
Since the DV timeline is 60i, I've been shooting in 1080i60 thinking that it would match up the closest. I drop the footage into a SD DV timeline, scale the footage to 50% (center-cut only). I tried 720p, but it was pretty jerky (progressive in an interlaced time line).
Is this the best work flow? We're cutting along side existing SD footage. I'm new to HD, so any suggestions would be great. I don't think we're at the point to edit in HD, upconvert SD and then convert everything back down.

Yes, in my opinion that is the best work flow.

The 10 fps burst mode will only be available on the iPhone 5s.  I believe all of the other features for sharpening photos from multiple shots are iPhone 5s only as well.

I guess the obvious answer is PURCHASE the DNA Software so it won't be a demo unless you have already purchased it and it still won't work and in that case you should contact DNA Software.

  • Shooting video for the web

I am shooting a spot for a client that is requesting an 18fps deliverable for use on the web and the spot needs to play in real time. I have never heard of this and I can't seam to find any information on it. Does anyone know how this works and what the possible sound syncing issues I can avoid?

you made it sound so easy and it was thank you! I tried to manipulate the frame rate in Compressor and Cinema tools but I couldn't find a custom frame rate option. I ended up finding it in FCP under the quicktime conversion.

Thanks for all of your advise, I really appreciate it!  I know I'm not going to get everything I want in a camera unless I buy a SLR camera, but that wouldn't meet my needs since you can't get into concerts with those types since they consider them "professional."  I was actually leaning toward the ZS7 because I have head a lot of good reviews on it from people at concerts and have watched amazing videos shot with that camera at concerts.  The zoom is incredibly as well as the sound.  Also to clarify my first post about low light, concerts aren't usually that low lighted so I wouldn't need a camera that excelled in low lighting.  Do you own a ZS7?  If so, what do you like about it and what don't you like about it?
Concerts are actually usually quite dark, especially by photography standards.  Perhaps this will help to clarify things a bit:
    Direct Sunlight: 32,000–130,000 lux
Full Daylight (indirect sun): 10,000–25,000 lux
Typical Family Living Room: 50 lux
This means that even the lowest amount of full daylight provides 200 times as much light as the typical family's living room.  So you can imagine the scenario for a dimly lit concert.
However, I do own a ZS7 and have used one successfully at concerts.  Using spot metering, shutter priority and going up to ISO 800 is the best advice I can give you.  ISO 400 is better if you can get proper exposure with it.  Keep in mind that you are NOT going to be able to hold the camera still enough at full zoom to get blur free pictures in this lighting, so make sure you get decent seats.
I love my ZS7 but the tiny sensor found in the ZS7 and all other P&S pocket cams (except for the Canon S90/S95, Samsung EX1, Panasonic LX3/LX5 and any others with equivalently sized sensors and faster lenses) doesn't do well in low light.  Don't fall for that BSI (backlit) CMOS sensor crap that Sony pushes.  There are marginal improvements over the other tiny sensor cams but performance is still poor and the daylight performance is much worse than their CCD counterparts at this point.  Remember that low light essentially includes all indoor phtography as well as very overcast days, dusk, sundown, etc.
The ZS7 has great contrast and color and a slew of features.  It's well made and very versatile.  Really the old thing I don't like is the low light performance.  I also find the video to contain a lot of artifacting, though it's in line with any other 720p pocket cam.  I would defintiely recommend it but if low light is a major concern, check out the other cameras I mentioned as they offer a 40% larger sensor and a faster lens.
Here's a good concert pic with the ZS7.  Metric was on during the day and even though it was overcast, it was fairly bright out.
... and here is a bad concert pic with the ZS7.  It was very difficult to take pics once SSPU came on as it was after 9pm and dark out.

  • Shooting HD for 4:3 aspect ratio

Shooting a video this weekend for an annual meeting at my work.  This will be an Odd Couple intro take off so I'd like the look to be TV.  To me that means a 4:3 aspect ratio.  This will be shown in a hotel conference room with typical hotel projection equipment.  It's not HD equipment.  Best I'm going to do is HDMI to DVI adapter into the projector.  Is there any way I can shoot in HD and end up with a 4:3 aspect ratio somehow using FCE.  I assume I can't shoot in HD and then mask the whole **** film down to 4:3 without issues.  Or shoot in HD and then use NTSC Basic Fire Wire.  I think FCE would just reject on input.  Typical HD camcorder that records in HD, SD wide and SD "normal" (4:3).  Any and all suggestions are welcome.  Maybe I should just shoot it in SD normal and use that NTSC Basic firewire setting for input and be done with it.  Basic question--where the projection equipment is not HD, to I gain ANYTHING by shooting in HD from an image quality perspective.  If not, then why not use the SD normal setting on the camera and proceed with HTSC basic firewire?
    Thanks.

Shoot SD (aka DV standard) and project the same.
Why make this more difficult than it needs to be?

  • Shooting video for DVD. Which camera setting?

I'm shooting a video with a HD only camera (Canon XF300). I was wondering what were the best settings for the camera, since I'll be burning a DVD for my client. I'm thinking 1280 X 720 at 30p. Does this make any difference at the end? Should I shoot at 60i instead?
    Thanks for the help.

It shouldn't make any noticeable difference what you shoot but it's always best to do a quick test.
Shoot a couple of minutes of similar footage at both settings, capture it, add a few transitions and burn to DVD.
The whole exercise will take well under 30 minutes and will show you exactly what to expect.

  • Shooting settings for optimal viewing in FCE (Canon Vixia HF20)

Hi, I own the Canon Vixia HF20 and I've read in various places to shoot/record in the Cinema Mode setting if you're looking to make movie-esque videos. Additionally, I found this last night in the camcorder user manual "Combine the Cinema Mode recording program with the 24 fps progressive frame rate (PF24) to get the enhanced effect of the 24p Cinema Mode.
I have absolutely no idea what the difference is between 60i, PF30 or PF24. I've already shot a lot of stuff on the 60i setting. Is there a huge difference between 60i vs. PF24. Drawbacks? Recommendations? Ultimately, I'm trying to record on the best settings for optimal compatibility with FCE.
I'm a huge novice as far the tech specs so any help is appreciated. Thanks and sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks for the info Wally. As mine is mainly for DVD I will stick with interlaced.
When I first got my Canon HV20 I tested the 50i and PF25 modes and couldn't detect any difference.
Incidentally the PF25/30 modes do not produce 25 or 30 full frames. They really shoot 50 or 60 fields exactly like interlaced footage except the 2 fields in each frame are identical, giving a similar effect to a single identical field that you would get in true progressive.

  • APPLE publishes 10 point Trouble Shooting Basics for FCPX

Odd, because they can fix some of this, other aspects are built on users method and set up. At least it gives a glimmer of hope that they are listening to feedback from the feedback forms or in fact, they just know inherently at this point. There are issues. For me, I get it, it's new software (new software is never perfect even years later) but what I don't get is the "speed" or lack of speed in regards to fixing specific functions or even basic functionality
I love the software, use it, but like many, it's frustrating

None of this is new. ALL of it is general guidelines. No matter WHAT software one was using, these tips should be heeded or there will be problems.
Problem is, even with all of these guidelines adhered to 100%, the underlying problems of the software (especially the last 03 incremental update) will not go away. They are coding issues and "built in." Take it or leave it.

  • General Trouble Shooting Tips for New Users

Ok so we're starting a Topic to help out people just starting up with Logic Express.
Me and a few others who frequent this board with a load of good answers thought it would be a good idea to offer a little helping hand to new users. Hopefully avoiding them their lapses in confidence and creativity by the way of limited techincal knowledge.
As far as Professional sequencers and recorders go Logic is pretty straight forward and quite basic too. If you're coming from either using Garage Band 1/2 or maybe even a PC with Cubase, Cool Edit, Sonar or otherwise. You may find it baffeling to start with.
So we hope this can be of some help to you.

Crack open the champagne it's Tip 1.
First off if you are using an external audio interface make sure it's plugged into your computer, it's powered up and drivers are installed. If using the internal sound card make sure all your connecting cables work ok and they are plugged in.
If you're running Logic for the first time, it should recognise compatible audio interfaces when you run the initial setup. It should also set this to be the default interface from now on.
If you've already been using Logic for a while and have just invested, then make sure and to to Preference/Audio and to the drivers panel. Select the driver there and leave all other settings as they are by default to avoid confusion.
This should then allow you to record audio. SO go to the Edit/Arrangement window and make an Audio if there's not already one there. Then head over to the Mix window and find that channel (Audio 1 is normally all the way to the left). You'll see the faders and just above them the panners, above these will be two boxes the top is to set the input channel on your interface, and the second is the output.
Set these according to the signal path you're trying to record hit the "Rec" button on that channel and you should either see the meter move up and down corresponding the sound, or you'll see the meter and hear the sound as well.
You can turn off the software monitoring (ie being able to hear the sound coming in) in the same preference panel we looked at earlier. Under "Software Monitoring".
Now you should be ready to record the sound. Switch back to the Edit/Arrange window and hit record in the transport bar. PERFORM. Hit stop. Go back to the start of the sound and hit play.
    NOW
If you don't hear sound check the easiest things first. Is you audio interface or internal sound card connected to a set of speakers? Be it by means of an amplifier first or maybe you got some flash active ones!?
Do the cable you're using to connect with actually work?
Is the volume control up on the amp? Are the speakers plugged in?
This may sound stupid but it's the most annoy thing to do wrong and it DOES happen.
If this still doesn't work then double check all your drivers are there present and correct, the volume control in the computer is turned up, you have assign a valid output, and all levels within any software mixer that came with your interface are also all the way up.
Still nothing? Post a detailed description of your setup and problem in the forum and someone will answer it probably within a day or so.
Don't forget READ the manual, don't expect this to as easy as Garageband it's a different scale of operation which given time can reap massive rewards. Not always monitary mind you.
    Good luck.

  • After upgrading to FF27, cpu loads up and FFbecomes slow. Worked fine before upgrading to 27. Why are you asking everyone to trouble shoot this for you?

Open firefox, after the third or forth web page, firefox bogs and causes the cpu to slow down. I can close and open firefox and it speeds up for about three web pages and repeats the slow down. I have read most of the threads and this is a problem with the software and it seems you are making the users jump through hoops for nothing. I twas caused when I upgraded to FF27.
