Shooting Tethered with Aperture

Is it possible to have your files automatically imported into Aperture while you are shooting them?
If not, I think they have left out a massively important feature for a professional photographer!

  • Can i shoot tethered with two cameras?

I've read that I can shoot tethered with two cameras in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. When I tether them to my iMac 27", one will work. Then I switch cameras in the "shooting module" to the other body (both bodies are Nikon D800) and then it freezes up. Do they need to be named differently? Is that even possible. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Canon supports two camera attachment for tethering.
    Nikon does not.
    Tethered camera support in Lightroom
    Notes on Nikon cameras
    For all Nikon cameras:
If you trigger the shutter with the tether bar capture button, the image must finish downloading before another photo can be captured. Triggering a capture with the shutter release button on the camera does not have this limitation.
Images do not save to the compact flash card. They are only downloaded to the computer.
Only one Nikon camera can be attached at a time.

  • Unable to shoot tethered with a Canon 70D

I am trying to practice shooting tethered for an upcoming shoot. I am unable to get Lightroom and my Canon 70D to connect. I receive the dialog box shown below several seconds after attempting to connect. I went through all the steps on the "Troubleshooting tethered capture in Lightroom" and can shoot tethered using Canon's software. I am using Lightroom 5.3 on a MacBookPro 13 inch with 16 gb ram running system 10.9.1

Lightroom does not currently support tethering on the 70D.

  • Turn off the Auto adjust when shooting tethered in aperture

is there any way to turn off the auto adjust feature in aperture? When I shoot tethered it over corrects and ruins all the shots, then I have to adjust back for the client to get a good idea of the image.

After the disaster of iTunes 11.1 that deleted nearly all my archived podcasts (recovered from backup thankfullly) I was shocked, but not altogether surprised, to see that the option to delete played episodes has been enabled/re-enabled by default.
From the lower right of the Podcasts window click Settings then, if needed, click Defaults, then turn Delete Played Episodes to Off.
Why set the destructive option as the default?
I have many episodes that I want to keep that are no longer available at their feed so the last thing I want is any automatic delete process to be enabled.

  • Nikon D90 & Tethering with Aperture

I bought the Nikon D90 because Apple says it is supported by Aperture, but
all of the tethering options are greyed out. I have download the Camera
Control Pro 2 and gotten it to work but I can not get Aperture to work.
What am I doing wrong??? Does anyone else have the D90 & Aperture
Tethering working? If so could you please tell me how you got it to work?
    Any help would be appreciated!!

I had the problem with my D80 initially too. Change your USB setting under the SETUP menu to PTP. Then plug the USB into your computer. Make sure you select a/the project you want the tethered shots to enter from your D90 on the import page. Open the tether dialog again and you should be able the "start session". From there, just leave the import page by clicking on the project you are shooting into.
I know love tethered shooting. You can even fire the shutter from the computer, which I didn't know. Good luck

  • Can I shoot tethered with my D3x to Lightroom 3.6 on my Macbook Pro OS 10.7?

I'm getting conflicting information on whether or not I can shoot my D3x camera tethered to my laptop with the new Lion operating system directly into Lightroom.  Any suggestions?

This link will take you to the official list of cameras where Lr suports tethering http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support-lightroom-4.html

  • Shooting tethered with a Nikon D810

Does anyone know where I can check to see when Lightroom will be updated to allow tethered shooting with a Nikon D810?

It is a shame.... so much so that I now use Capture One Pro 8 for tethering my D810.  I am also thinking of totaling going to it as part of my workflow.  Tethered to Capture One Pro you get the image instantly unlike Lightroom that likes to think!

  • Aperture 3 tethered with Nikon D300 trouble

I've been having trouble shooting tethered with Aperture 3 and the Nikon D300. It works for a few shots then it jams with the spinning wheel until i have to force quit. Also the inspector column gets messed up with type over type. I'm assuming apple will issue an update for this but i'm not very impressed. I have been using Capture one, trial version in the meantime to get by until a fix arrives and it has been working fine. Nice fast captures and no BS. <Edited By Host>

I gave up with shooting tethered in Aperture 3. I now use Capture one 5 Pro from phase one. I use Aperture for the image adjustment because i like the built in retouch tools and the image management (although my search does not work in Aperture 3, waiting for an update). I'm not impressed with Apple software right now.
Capture one works flawless tethered, the fastest importing i've ever had and didn't take long to get used to the focus tools etc. Try the 30 day free trial and you'll see. When I'm done a shooting session, i just drag the capture folder (with the NEF files) onto a flash drive and import them into Aperture for adjustment.

  • Tethered Nikon Shooting with Aperture?

Is it possible to attach my Nikon D2x to my mac via firewire and then as I shoot, the images are transfered to Aperture? How do I do this?
    Kevin Hawkins

Well, the D2x doesn't have Firewire (big Bronx cheer to Nikon), so you'll have to use USB 2.0. For cable lengths over 15', you need a "booster" cable that has a powered signal repeater on one end. The only brand I'm aware of is IOGear. You can get their 16' USB 2.0 Booster Cable from B&H for $25.
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/357445-REG/IogearGUE216_USB_2_0_BoosterExtension.html
You can daisy-chain up to four of these if 16' isn't long enough for you.
As for using Aperture, you'll need Nikon's Camera Control utility, which Nikon sells separately (another Bronx cheer) to control the camera from the computer and transfer the files to the hard drive. Note that when shooting tethered with the D2x or D200, the camera will not save the files to the CF card in the camera (third Bronx cheer), so a backup strategy on the computer is important. FYI, Canon gives the option to save to CF or not when tethered.
Now, you'll want to download two files from Apple. One is Aperture Hot Folder.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/aperturehotfolder.html
This is basically a folder script that watches a folder and sends anything added to it to Aperture. When you launch this, it prompts you to select the destination folder you've designated in Camera Control and a project in Aperture. Then, it runs in the background.
Performance will be best if you turn off auto generation of previews in Aperture and tell Hot Folder to import the images as referenced rather than managed files. Even so, data transfer from the D2x to the hard drive is painfully slow, so you'll find the buffer filling and all shooting grinding to a halt after shooting a few dozen images in a minute or two. Ya just gotta wait for the buffer to clear. Another Bronx cheer for USB.
As for backup, there's an Automator action called Duplicate Files to Folder 1.0.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/duplicatefilestofolder.html
This watches a selected folder and automatically copies any incoming files to another folder (preferably on another hard drive). I haven't actually tried this one yet.
I've used a tethered D2x with Aperture on portrait sessions, and it works smoothly as long as you shoot slowly. Start blasting away at 12MP, though, and you can expect the buffer to inspire curses you didn't even know you'd forgotten.

  • Aperture FREEZES WHILE TETHERED with Nikon D90

I shoot a lot in my studio, so shooting tethered with my Nikon D90 is very useful... UNTIL Aperture freezes every 10-15 captures, so I have to FORCE QUIT it and restart. This, of course, is SUPER ANNOYING, especially when CLIENTS are watching.
Can anyone please enlighten me what's going on, and how I could alleviate the problem? I'm running the latest version of Aperture on a MacBook Pro 17" with a 2.3GHz processor and 4GB of RAM. And I'm usually not running anything other than iTunes alongside Aperture while shooting. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I finally gave up on tethered shooting with my Nikon D3 and Aperture 3. Aperture crashed every fifth shot or so and made me crazy. I tried new libraries, new cables, faster computer, etc. I submitted countless bug reports. I waited patiently for a software fix, because I never had this problem with Aperture 2.
I gave up and rolled back to Aperture 2 on my laptop (which I use only for tethered shooting). Now tethering works perfectly again; it's a software issue. I've had one crash in maybe 2000 shots with Aperture 2, and I can live with that. It's a crummy solution, but it's either that or I buy Lightroom and scrap Aperture for good.
FYI: the raw converter is different in Ap2 than Ap3. What looks good in Ap2 looks underexposed in Ap3 (almost by a stop, looking at the histograms), and the color rendering is quite different between the two. If you try this Ap2 solution out, do some testing before you do a live shoot to make sure you're happy with your results.

  • Tethering with Nikon D600 - no camera found!!!!

This is incredibly frustrating to have a $2,000+ camera that cannot connect to Lightroom.  It really impacts the value of both Lightroom and my camera if they don't talk to each other.  Please advise when you anticipate this being fixed in an update.

    Lee Jay wrote:
Then why did you buy the camera?
Well ... considering Aperture and Capture One both support the D600 for tethering, some folks would think the world's leading graphics and imaging software developer would also have supported the D600 by now ... the idea we should be held hostage by a third party developer to base your equipment purchase decisions is just a tad ridiculous ... sometimes we are in need of upgrading equipment for more reasons than what you or Adobe may consider important ... Adobe is NOT the center of the Universe ...
Adobe should be a bit more responsive to stay current ... if they don't consider it a priority to do so, or feel it is too difficult to offer support for tethered shooting, maybe they should drop tether support all together ... it can't be that difficult to offer the support if others can get the job done ... we are not discussing a topic so complex as manned space flight to Mars ... we simply would like to transfer image data from camera to computer at the point of capture ... a task that is not as complex as some would like us to believe ...
To the OP - You can shoot tethered with Lr on Mac OS X as long as you have installed the current Digital Camera RAW compatibility updates ... then use the included Image Capture app (found in the Applications folder) and then point Lr to a watched folder for auto import (this would be the folder you select in Image Capture) ... you won't be able to trigger the camera from within Lr or adjust camera settings ... but you can get the job done this way until Adobe decides it's time to catch up.

  • Nikon D40 and shooting tethered

Is it possible to shoot tethered with the Nikon D40? I can't get it to work. Can anyone help and possibly post the steps to do this?

Nikon Camera Control Pro works just fine with a D40, and a USB lead, shoots any interval, for as long as you want. Nothing else needed, but have not used in some time. I'd rather use the same software that was storing my pictures, eg Ap. I'll be wanting to use a D300 for future outdoor work in that department, the facility being built-in, hence no laptop outside alone at night:-).

  • How to view JPEG in Aperture while shooting tethered?

    I'm shooting tethered on a D3x into Aperture 2.1.4 with OS 10.6.1
Camera is set to RAW+JPEG with the in-camera JPEG set to Monochrome.
I'd like to be able to see the Monochrome image on the screen as I'm shooting, but as you know, the only documented way to view the JPEG is to make a "New Version from Master JPEG"…..
    Suggestions?

no, there was no "?" displayed, all looks normal...  but in  just the develop screen it was a big grey blank, and 'folder could not be found"....    in frustration last night i closed everything down and today simply re-booted the entire computer and my mystery is this morning i can see the jpeg.....   i may never know what caused the glitch...  is it therefore a good idea to re-boot the HD after making changes like adding LR5???  Does LR5 need that to properly interface with other files/folders on a HD??  it would help to know before i add LR to my ultrabook!!  thanks so much for being available to all of us 'beginners'!!

  • Has anyone successfully tethered a Nikon D7000 with Aperture 3.1?

    Hi,
I have a new Nikon D7000 and tried to tether it to Aperture 3.1. Aperture recognizes it as a D7000, but I can't get an image to display. I'm outputting JPEG right now and can wait until RAW is available, but it would be convenient to tether so I can get immediate feedback on the image while I'm shooting.
Has anyone had success tethering the D7000 with Aperture 3 or is the software not there yet? I'm talking about having the image immediately downloaded to the iMac and automatically displayed after you take each photo, not downloading at the end of the day.
    Thanks

UPdate - the key was opening a new project in Aperture 3. Once I did that, Aperture recognized the D7000 and I could shoot from the camera and have it displayed immediately on the iMac.
It works right out of the box. Yea!!!
