    I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1; I shoot with a Sony HDR-CX260V.
How do I import from camera to Final Cut without going through the intermediate step of using iMovie?

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • I am having problems with the Sony XDCAM EX codec

I have been following this thread and updating the Adobe Application Manager had seemed to resolve my issue of Adobe asking me to register. Yesterday evening Adobe pushed out an update to some CS6 applications and I downloaded and installed them. This morning i find myself locked out of my projects in Sony XDCAM EX codec and says my trial has expired. I managed to re-activate by following instructions in #15. I am uncertain whether my problem was never really resolved or the update has caused this.

Premiere Pro...doesn't allow you to use the Sony XDCAM EX codec in trial mode.
It actually has since version 5.5.
Sometimes in CS6, the codec activation get's messed up and you have to redo it.

  • Working with Sony XDCam,  FCP 7 and a Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme

I started a project about a year ago shooting with a Sony EX3 and imported all of my footage as XDCam EX 1080 30p mostly using Sony's XDCam transfer software but I also imported some shots using Log and Transfer.
The current sequence settings are XDCam EX 1080 30p.
I recently purchased a new Mac Pro and installed Final Cut Studio 3. I've read that the XDCam transfer software is buggy with Snow Leopard but all of my footage is already imported so that isn't my current issue.
Yesterday I hooked up my external monitor to my Blackmagic card to preview the project and I could only see the last frame played on the external. I called Blackmagic and since my card is discontinued the only information I could get is that it doesn't support XDCam. For some reason I have never tried to preview XDCam footage on my external monitor so this was a bit surprising. I switched the compressor for the sequence to ProRes HQ and I can watch everything fine on my external until something needs to be rendered. Most of the footage has the "Full Render" green bar at the top of the sequence but plays fine but I do have effects and animations that need to be rendered. Once I render a clip it goes black in the timeline.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I transcode my footage to ProRes? What would be the best way to go about that? I noticed Log and Transfer doesn't work with XDCam in FCP7.

I tried converting a clip from XDCam to ProRes using Quicktime 7 and brought it into my ProRes sequence and it was black when played in the timeline. It does play fine on my external monitor when played in the Viewer window.

  • Premiere CC v7.2 "generic import error" Sony xdcam 422 50mb / PDW F800

I'm receiving a "generic import error" when attempting to import Sony XDCAM footage in to Premiere Pro CC v7.2.0 (PC). The footage is in the original file structure transferred from a Sony XDCAM disc. The format is 1920x1080p, 29.97, 50mbps mpeg-2 long GOP (CBR). Shot with a Sony PDW F800 camera. It opens and plays fine with the Sony XDCAM viewer. I've tried importing the entire folder structure from PP media browser with no success. Not getting any thumbnails or previews from the files. PP will import the proxy files (mxf/mp4) but not the mpeg-2 HD media. Any insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Wil, got this figured out quite painlessly considering the train wreck that it was to begin with. The material consisted of 4 mxf discs all with sequentially numbered duplicate filenames from disc to disc… cameramen love to torture editors. Simply renaming the clips using the OS would not work so here’s what I did. Starting with Bridge I identified the HD material apart from the 8 audio files and 1 proxy file per clip by performing a file search using the letter (V), only the HD video material has a (V) in the filename. Next I copied only the video files to a work folder as to not alter the original disc structure, I did this for each mxf disc. Next critical step was to turn off all metadata logging in Bridge except the filename metadata, then I used the batch renaming function with 3 criteria: 1-seed each filename with the disc number, 2- retain original clip name, and 3-rename extension to mpg. I did this for each disc. Next step was to batch encode using AME. I processed each disc using the same codec as the original source material, MXF/OP1a, Sony XDCAM 50mb with smart rendering codec enabled. My system ripped through this process at amazing speed, it retained the original source clip time code and the quality appears to be unaltered from the original. The reason for turning off the metadata logging in Bridge was to strip off the mxf reference, AME would not process the files by simply renaming them using the OS. Total time to clean-up train wreck; 40 minutes.
BTW: I did not need the associated audio from these clips otherwise there would have been an extra step involved using premiere’s nesting feature as you had mentioned.
    Happy Holidays.

  • Shooting with Sony EX-1 and P2: advice re eventual edit in FCP?

    Hi all,
Next week I'm shooting with two cameras - - my Sony EX-1 and a borrowed Panasonic P2.
Is there anything I have to do (re camera set-up), to make sure that editing in FCP7 will go smoothly?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Malcolm

Shane: "After you capture both, convert both to PRO RES and then you can multiclip"
Luca: "Ideally you want to work with the same format/You can use QT, MPEGstreamclip, Compressor"
O.K., the cobwebs are beginning to clear a bit. Editing in the same format seems to be key. And ProRes seems to be your first choice.
With regards to my EX-1 footage: I just checked Sony Clip Browser, and it seems to only give me the option of exporting as MXF for NLE, or MXF for various XDCAM types (including HD422 and DVCAM), or RAW DV.
Should I export as one of these (if so, which one)? And once I've exported as one of these, do I then use Compressor or QT or MPEGstreamclip to convert to Pro Res?
With regards to the P2 footage (sorry, I don't know which P2 camera it is, and I don't have access to it until the day I shoot; I do know, though, that it shoots 1280x1080. My Sony EX-1 shoots 1920x1080, by the way) - - will the P2CMS software export as Pro Res directly, or do I also have to do this in two steps?
    thanks so much,
    Malcolm

  • My audio gets out of sync with my video after capturing from Sony XDCAM

Everything was fine. I captured content from my Sony XDCAM, created pieces, no problem. Imported a .mov from my older FCP (5.1.4). FCP told me I needed to change my settings in order to use the .mov with my current timeline. I said OK, fine. Now, when I capture from my XDCAM some of the audio is in sync but it goes out fairly quickly. Any Ideas? I noticed in the bin the clips which are out of sync have a different data rate then the good ones. HELP!

  • Does Premiere E support video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX?

Does anyone know if I can edit video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX? I did some research but can't find the answer!

Which version of PrE are you looking into? PrE 10 has DSLR Presets that cover the Canon 5D. Not sure about the XDCAM EX, but this ARTICLE covers the supported formats. I know that PrPro CS 5.5 offers full, native support for XDCAM footage, but do not see it in the PrE list.

  • From Sony XDCAM to DVD

Ok, give me a simple flow chart on how to get HD video from and Sony XDCAM (PDW-700) to a DVD. Here's what we are doing now...
We import the vids off the recording deck using Sony's XDCAM transfer utility. Once in FCS, we edit and then shoot it over to Compressor. From there, it goes to DVD Studio Pro. Is that the correct process or is there something else?
Our finished product is fuzzy and wavy...not smooth and crisp like our source video. I want to nail down the process first before I start playing with the settings in each software package.
All I am trying to get from this questions is a step by step, from this program to that so I'll understand the workflow.
    Thank you.
    Cliff

Hi can you post a few seconds of your "finished product" and possibly your FCP sequence settings and Compressor settings. Cheers, G.

  • Can I shoot slow motion on HVX-200 keeping 1080i/24P without FCP Conversion

I've been reading many threads, but haven't figured if you can actually shoot true 1080i/24P on my HVX-200 with menu frame rate set to 60fps/shutter 60fps. The times I've tried it shows 24P in the menu frame rate and will not playback on the P2 in true slow motion so I can import into FCP slow motion at 1080i/24P without conversion.
From everything I've seen it shows it has to be in 720/24P with menu frame rate at 60fps/shutter 60fps which will let it playback on the P2 in slow motion.
Any suggestions? We want to shoot everything in 1080i/24P but see instant playback in slow motion without conversion mostly for music videos.
    Thanks, Paul

haven't figured if you can actually shoot true 1080i/24P on my HVX-200 with menu frame rate set to 60fps/shutter 60fps
You can't. 720p is the only format that is 60fps. 1080i is 30fps.
From everything I've seen it shows it has to be in 720/24P with menu frame rate at 60fps/shutter 60fps which will let it playback on the P2 in slow motion.
Correct. You can only shoot in-camera slow motion at 720p60, using the 24p setting. And this is also the way to shoot so you can slow it down later with Cinema Tools or in FCP. It must be 720p60. Again, 1080i is 30fps only. Even 1080p...30fps with DVCPRO HD.
Any suggestions? We want to shoot everything in 1080i/24P but see instant playback in slow motion without conversion mostly for music videos.
Sorry, if you want to shoot smooth slow motion, you need to shoot 720p. If you must shoot 1080p, then you need to invest in good post slow-motion options, like Twixtor.

  • Best Import Settings for Sony XDCAM EX

Ok, this is a variation on my best export settings question. Considering the Sony XDCAM EX1 shoots 8 bit video with 4:2:0 color space, what's the best import settings to use? Which DNX codec will give you the best results? I don't want to import at a quality higher than my source material. And of course, I don't want to import at a quality lower than my source material. I'm looking for the sweet spot.
    Thanks

  • Can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6

I can't import from Sony XDCAM memory card to FCP 6.01 HD. Am using Macbook Pro, 2 gig of RAM. This is my first time NOT using tape. I can copy the files off the memory card onto an external drive (to free up the card for pro crew's next day's shoot), but can't import either to FCP. Do I need to convert the files in some way before FCP can read them? Need to fix this problem fast as the crew are off to Nepal for 2 week shoot.

    Laura,
First, I'm assuming that you're referring to the XDCAM EX. You'll need to install the FCP 6.0.2 upgrade, which contains the XDCAM EX codecs.
Second, You'll need to install the PDZK-P1 Transfer Application, and use that to import your EX clips into FCP. I just noticed that there is a new version available, 2.5.1 which is labeled specifically for Tiger/Leopard. I haven't tested this version yet, and will report back on any stability issues. We're currently running version 2.1.1, without many issues.

  • Sony XDCam--can't view my .mov files in QT

I am having no luck with viewing my .mov files that were captured by a Sony XDCam. The camera is Sony's newest and best-est for HD movie making. Is there a codec or program that I can install that will help?
Point of interest: the audio comes through crystal clear; the video is a black screen... ugh.
    Many thanks!

Do you have Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 or above installed on your system?
The XDCAM HD codecs are licensed only to be installed with Final Cut Pro. The XDCAM EX codecs came with Final Cut Pro 6.0.2.

  • PDW-HD1500 - Final Cut Pro export to Sony XDCAM error

I have a sequence in Final Cut Pro with XDCAM HD422 1080i50. When I try to export going via the "File > Export > Sony XDCAM" menu, choose "XDCAM HD422 1080i50 CBR" and hit the "Export" button.
On a 5 minute clip, I get this error message after 8% of exporting. In the system.log in Mac OS X there is a "write error 138" reported by the XDCAM exporter.
If I set an out point to reduce the in-point to just 5 secons, the export is successful. If I try 1 minute, the export fails. If I check "recompress all frames" and export the 1 minute clip, the export is successful.
Waiting for Final Cut Pro to recompress all frames takes too long on a new MacBook Pro 17-inch. 1 minute takes about 4 minutes to recompress.
I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8, Final Cut Pro 6.0.4, QuickTime 7.6.4, XDCAM Transfer 2.11, and firmware version 1.51 on the PDW-HD1500.
I have set the audio outputs of my sequence to 8 tracks dual mono discrete, and set each audio track to go 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and so on. The video settings are XDCAM HD422 1080i50 50Mb.
I have checked that the settings on the PDW-HD1500 is set to HD422, 50i, 8ch 24-bit. Are there any other settings I might have overlooked?
Any suggestions? I would really appreciate some help.

I've had experience wiith using 7toX and never had that message. Have you tried contacting the developer? My guess is they would be responsive.
