Shopping for a laptop

Hello. I know I may be in the wrong forum for this, but I am in the market for a new notebook computer. I am not in a big push for one right now, so I have been comparison shopping for awhile. My question is this: What are the advantages of having an Apple notebook vs. a Windows based notebook. I know just from shopping around there isn't as much commercially available software for the Apple platforms, & this could be a drawback for me. Also, it seems as if the prices on the Apple notebooks are higher than the Windows based, & this is also a drawback. Are my peceptions wrong, because I am very interested in knowing the differences. I guess what I would like to know from the community is what sets the Apple notedbooks apart from the Windows based? If I choose to go with an Apple notebook, will I be satisfied with the transition from Windows to Apple based?

The cost difference between Macs and PCs is very misleading because it frequently ignores the differences in what you get for your money. Read the following:

Is a Mac Better than a PC?
Q. Is a Macintosh Better Than a Windows PC?
As for software there are thousands of titles for the Mac. The major productivity software like Microsoft Office and Adobe products are available in Mac versions as well as Windows versions. Yes, there are Window's titles not available for the Mac. Many games come in both flavors, but many do not. If you have software needs then you must determine whether the software is available for the platform and only buy the platform that runs the software that you need. If would be foolish to purchase a Mac if you couldn't run the software you need to use.
Personally, I've used many different types of computers over the years. I started with an Osborne computer in 1981. I've used IBM PCs, Windows computers, Amiga computers, Macs, and mainframes. In my opinion Macs are well-made, well-designed, and work. The operating system and software are easy to use and easy to learn. I've worked with colleagues who used Windows machines and Macs, and those who used Macs were more productive faster than those who used PCs.
Will you be satisfied with the transition? Hard to say. I know nothing about you. Some people make the transition easily, others simply cannot. Most are in between. Apple tries to help:
Switch 101
I am not a Mac fanatic. I believe strongly in the idea that one should use the best tool for the job. For my jobs I find the Mac to be the best tool. Fortunately, the rest of the world is beginning to learn why Macs are great computers. The gap between what works with Windows and what works with Macs is becoming narrower and narrower. Macs also enjoy an extremely active freeware and shareware market - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Computer purchasing decisions should always start with the software. Identify the software that best suits your needs, then buy the computer that runs that software. Buying a computer without knowing if you will find the software you need is just plain dumb.

    Hey ShankyHP,
Let's see if I can answer some of your questions. Great questions by the way!
As long as you get a drive that is the same heigh as the drive that comes with the unit, it should fit in the existing carrier. So, in this case, any standard 9mm drive should work. The Maintenance & Service Guide contains instructions on how to swap drives.
I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, since there are no 250GB or 500GB options listed for this unit on HP Shopping.
Upgrading the graphics card is not supported after the unit is built.
There are a few different Wi-Fi modules used for the system, depending on the configuration, however all of them operate at the 2.4GHz band. The theoretical maximum speeds are similar between 2.4GHz and 5GHz, however 2.4GHz typically provides you with much greater range (distance), while the 5GHz band may be less crowded (if near a ton of wireless networks, like an apartment) but with less range.
Currently, an extended battery is not available for this model, but in the future it may be available. However, the standard battery is measured to last for 5 hours on this model.
The 17t-j000 does include an HP TrueVision HD Webcam, providing 720p video - it must just be a typo like you said.
Hope this helps! That is a fantastic unit, and we hope you enjoy it! Please let us know if you have any more questions.

  • Help with enabling TPM in Task Sequence for Dell Laptops

    Hi there,
I would appreciate some advice on creating a task sequence for Win8.1 with TPM enabling for Dell laptops; I have BitLocker set up manually with a Group policy, but want to have TPM enabled in the task sequence. I have read older posts on sites such as windows
noob, but can't see how to reference the CCTK and get TPM going for win8.1 in a SCCM2012 environment.
Obviously I haven't created this before so any help would be appreciated; I have noticed when I try to import my CCTK configurations into SCCM as it isn't a zip file I cannot do it.

Luckily Dell wrote a whitepaper about that subject, see:

I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?  Will the new one become less effective if it sits around too long?

How much capacity is remaining on your current battery?

Copy and Paste in your reply.
The new battery will become less effective if you store it in a hot or humid environment. It should be stored at room temperature (22 C).
    Long term storage (6 months):
Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life.

  • How do I use my 8300 as a modem for my laptop

    Hi all,
I'm new to this forum. This is my first post...
I'm trying to set up my 8300 smartphone to be used as a tethered modem for my laptop to be able to get the full internet content anywhere with in cell coverage.
    Question 1:
I got instructions from the 'BlackBerry HELP' icon on the phone (my question was: how do i use my device as a modem) which seemed very complete. The modem is dial-up and when I try to connect I get Error 718 (basically a timeout error).
    Can anyone help?
    Question 2:
Since this uses dial-up, would I be using my cell phone minutes?
    Thank you, Lar

  • How do I use my airport express as my default audio for a laptop?

I can stream music from iTunes to our airport exoress no problem, but I'd like to be able to use the speakers connected to our Airport Express as the default audio output for my MacBook Pro - i.e for all sounds, aps, etc.  This would allow me to wirelessly stream music or any other audio (not just iTunes) and then have it played through the speakers.  I've googled and looked here, but cannot seem to find a clear cut answer that isn't two plus years old in all the clutter.
    Thank you in advance.

The bottom line is that you will need an application like Airfoil for Mac to be able to stream any audio source on your Mac to the AirPort Express.

Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.

  • Setup Problem HP6830 using Hotspot for Printer & Laptop

I have a TMobile Hotspot that gives me internet access for my laptop.I have a HP Officejet Pro that I just got and I'm trying to set it up on the Hotspot network.I've installed (via disk) the HP Software on my Toshiba Coimputer.I've gone through the setup process on the printer and it shows I'm connected to the Hotspot Network. When I try to go through the setup process on the computer it says it can't find that printer.I've checked - over and over again - the IP, and printed everything out (Config Page & Network TestResults) on the Printer, and it indicates everything is OK. My question is - Why can't my computer find the computer (they're both on the same Hotspot Network)?I don't have a USB Cable right now, and I'm trying to set it up wirelessly.  Any suggestion about what I might have missed?  Any help would be appreciated

Hey ,  Welcome to the HP Support Forum.  I understand you're encountering some setup issues when using your HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer with a mobile hot spot.  I would like to assist you with this.   In my experience, mobile hotspots are hit and miss when used to support printers' wireless connections, even when the setup's are completed with diligence and care on the part of the user.  This caveat aside, as there are no official documents from HP on how to troubleshoot this particular issue, I recommend  toggling airplane mode on your T-Mobile device before restoring the hotspot connection.  Try the printer to laptop connection via the software as before, once you've confirmed the laptop's connected to the hotspot.  If this approach falls short, you could try the alternative and HP supported wireless direct setup method.  Here's how: From your printer's front panel touch the Wireless Direct icon ()Turn Wireless Direct OnFrom here you can choose to have it enabled with Security On or Off.  If you turn Security On, make a note of the passcode (it'll come in handy later). To learn how to complete the setup on your computer and any other mobile devices, click here for more instructions. Please let me know the result of your troubleshooting by responding to this post.  If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below and clicking to accept this solution. Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!

  • Can N200 battery be used for N100 laptop

    Hi,
One of Lenovo resellers suggested that N200 battery can be used for N100 laptop as well. However, N200 one is 11V and N100 one is 10.8V. Otherwise it fits in the laptop design.
Any recommendations or suggestions from experts?
    Thanks

Yes, you can with with Airfoil.
However, for watching DVDs, you'll want to use VLC in concert with Airfoil so that you can compensate for the audio delay that will occur otherwise. Open Airfoil and select VLC as the app whose audio should go to the Express. Click on the little button next to the speaker name and VLC will automatically open.
Then open the VLC preferences, select Audio in the list, and click on the Advanced checkbox at the bottom of the preferences window. Enter a negative number of milliseconds in the "Audio desynchronization compensation" field to advance the audio ahead of the video, which will offset the audio delay. Start with -3000 (3 seconds) and you'll probably have to tweak it from there. Then open the DVD in VLC and start it playing.
Yes, this is a pain in the butt, but it's the nature of streaming audio: the audio stream must be prebuffered for a few seconds to keep variations in the data transfer rate from interrupting the audio.

    Hi Raghavendar,
Generally, when you install Lync 2013 in the computer with Office 2010, a Lync Meeting Add-in will be installed and enabled in Outlook 2010. Please follow these steps to check it:
    1. In Outlook, click the File tab, click Options, and then click
    Add-Ins.
    2. Please take one of the following actions:
If the add-in is in the Inactive Application Add-ins list, follow these steps:
    a. In the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, click
COM Add-ins, and then click Go.
    b. Click to select the check box next to the add-in, and then click OK.
The New Online Meeting button should now be available in
Calendar View, and the Online Meeting button should be available when you create a new calendar item.
If the add-in is in the Disabled Application add-ins list, follow these steps:
    a. In the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, click
Disabled Items, and then click Go.
    b. Select the add-in, and then click Enable.
    c. Restart Outlook, and then verify that the add-in is displayed in the
    Add-ins dialog box.
The New Online Meeting button should now be available in
Calendar View, and the Online Meeting button should now be available when you create a new calendar item.
    3. In Event Viewer, view the Application log to see whether an error was logged for Outlook, for Lync 2013, the Lync Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office 2013.

I purchased CS5 for my laptop and now want to use it on my Mac book too. Do I need to buy a separate license?

Serial numbers are platform specific. You cannot use a PC license on Mac and vice versa. You would need to run a platform swap to use it on a Mac and upgrade to CS6, but then would lose the PC license. Therefore you eitehr need to buy a separate license for the Mac or join Creative Cloud.

My wife wants to do internet searches and shop for hours on end while I'm driving.  What does she need if we get an Ipad 2?
Some people here at the office say I need Wi-Fi.  Some say 3G.  Some say I need to sign up with a carrier on some type of monthly plan to get the internet.
    Help!!
I need this while we drive from state to state and not for getting on the internet through some hotel Wi-Fi Connection.
    Thanks,
    BaylinerKing

3G coverage and overall performance between Verizon and AT&T varies depending on where you are, and depending on where you are you may have no 3G service at all with any carrier.
The other consideration is the price-points of various data plans, they differ between size and cost.
But all plans are month-to-month, meaning that you can turn the service off anytime you want, and for as long as you want, but when you activate 3G service you pay for 30 days of service regardless if you turn 3G off (so turn it off on the 29th day if you won't need 3G next month).  You can do all of this right from the iPad, and you don't have to set anything up at the time of purchase (other than choose your carrier).  I bought a Verizon 3G iPad 6 weeks ago and have not yet activated 3G, but will do so soon while travelling.
