Short Answer for Bit Rates...

Greetings!
I am doing a second version of my 90-minute 4:3 SD MPEG-2/Dolby2 DVD.
This second version is only 50 minutes.
Can someone please help me with maxamizing my Bit Rates for 50 minutes?
I want as much video quality as recommended for newer home DVD players.
From FCP 5.04 (with all render files trashed), I Export> Compressor:
2 pass VBR
Average BR: 6.9
Max BR:8.1
Quality: Best
Should I go higher or lower?
Sound:
Dolby2: 224
Should I go higher or lower?
Any comment welcome.

Thanks.
I did the 50-minute MPEG2 at Constant Bit Rate (one pass), 7.0 and Best.
It turned out as good as I ever got from iDVD which is okay.
After hanumang's tip on the Compressor 2-pass VBR "BUG" --- I finally realized what was "wrong" with my 90-minute (2-pass VBR) DVD.
In fact, pixelation looked so goofy I ate all the time and completely redid the 90-minute MPEG2 at CBR 7.0 & Best and it looked as good as the 50-minute DVD.
+++
Not to be too negative, but my experience with Apple's "professional" MPEG-2 VBR encoder is very disappointing -- the version I paid a lot of money for is clearly sub standard and would have been an embarrasment to send out.
I read here that they have fixed it in a .1x (?), but that fire drill is more than a week away, no help now, (plus $50 that I mailed today).
+++
In any case, I've completed my 2-DVD project and would like to thank everyone who helped me.

  • "current encoder settings for bit rate and sample rate are invalid" message

I have some files I am working with. Details and what happened:
Had some music files where I was doing some trimming/splitting. Files worked fine in itunes.
Open the files in Quicktime Pro 7 to trim them. Exported to aif.
Opened the files with itunes. They open and play just fine.
In Itunes I click"create AAC version" to convert them.
I receive the message "An error occurred while trying to import the file. The current encoder settings for bit rate and sample rate are not valid for this file."
I don't know what to do from here. Suggestions?
    Thanks.

Make sure that the AIFFs that you export are set for 16 bit PCM.
Also, assuming that you are using 44.1 kHZ sampling in your AIFFs, make sure that you are not trying to use 48 kHz in the AAC.

  • Suggestions for bit rate for books on cd

    Hi
I'm trying to clear some room on my ipod. Thus far I've been importing everything at 192. I'm hoping to reimport some of the books on cd that I've put on and would like some suggestions as to how low of a bit rate I can use without affecting sound quality too much (I tried 96 and really couldn't tell the difference).
    Thanks
    Evelyn

    Hi, Evelyn.
For spoken word recordings, 32 kbps is generally considered an acceptable setting.
And, for what it's worth, that's the Bit Rate for Audiobooks purchased from the iTunes Store.

    Hi aruban,
most of us are not working for/at NI - we just use NI products!
So your best source of information for this kind of question would be NI itself. Ask them and then post your solution here, as others may search for such hardware too...

  • Bit rate too high error

    hi,
i am trying to burn my project which has 2 videos of 10 minutes each.
one of those videos has 19 sub-menus, which are very simple pages with nothing more than a button that says play (leading to the 2nd video). I also have 19 subtitle streams. all the video was encoded in compressor and the audio is ac3.
for bit rate setting i am using 6 and a max at 7. still getting error. not sure what the next step is here. the total i see as the project in terms of space looks like only 800 megs so i am not sure why i am getting this error. please help. thanks.

Try trashing your preference and getting rid of any PAR file associated with the disc and rebuild. Delete your old asset from the import window and trash it on your computer as well. If that doesn't work I would build the project from scratch and try again. Im looking for the data rates for a subtitle but I cant find it right now. But 6 mb/s CBr should be good.

  • Subtitles causing "video bit rate too high" error

At least I think they are. My media was all encoded through compressor and when the build gets to:
    - Preparing Subtitles...
    - Muxing VTS011.VOB
    the next message is red...
    - Video Bitrate Too High
    - Build cancelled
    - Formatting finished.

Take a look at page 70 of the PDF for bit rates on alternate angle tracks to see if that was the issue.
Also using a CBR intead of VBR has helped in some multi angle issues.
Take a look at this thread where someone had chapter marker causing issues:

Tony, Make sure you are in Songs view.  Then View > Show View Options, and check the boxes for "Bit Rate" and "Sample Rate."  See picture:

    hi,
i am trying to burn my project which has 2 videos of 10 minutes each.
one of those videos has 19 subtitled tracks and simple sub-menus. All the video was encoded in compressor and i tried both a VBR and CBR. I am only using audio that is AC3. For bit rate setting i am using 6 and a max at 7. The muxing craps out about 33% though. When i open the last file in MPEG Clipstream, i can see it dumps out at about 8 minutes but there is nothing on any of the subtitle streams that appears out of place. Total project is under 1 gig in terms of space so i am not sure why i having problems. i also posted this on the dvdsp forum but so far, no one has been able to help solve the issue. please help. thanks.

  • Bit rate

Which sample rate does iTunes support? Can I import with 32bit? I'm in the process of reimporting a rather large collection of CDs and I'd rather spend that time only once...
Also, I've seen discussions re level of import resolution
and although the purists would never depart from WAV, the majority appears to support a view that AAC 320kbs (stereo)/44.100kHz is sufficient and that no one would be able to spot any difference in quality for higher resolutions.
    Any thoughts?
A novice question at last: How does the sample rate (16/24/32) relate to the resolution e.g. 320kbs, is it implicit? Any down to earth explanations most appreciated.
    Many thanks

    pas,
Go into Edit > Preferences > Adavnced > Importing. Change "Setting" to Custom. Then you can poke around and you will see the "Stereo Bit Rate" and the "Sample Rate" ranges that are supported.
For Sample Rate, "everybody" uses 44.1 kHz for music. (That is the standard for CD encoding.)
For Bit Rate, 320 is probably overkill. I use 192, but your ears are your best guide. Import a representative song using a few different settings, play back under good listening conditions, and see what satisfies you. Then you can do the wholesale importing ONCE!

  • H.264 vs H.264 Blu-ray VBR 2-pass bit rate presets ...

If I select H.264 1080i, 29.97fps VBR 2-pass PP CS6 is recommending a target bit rate of 30 mbps and a max of 40 mbps.  However, if I switch to H.264 Blu-ray I get 25/30.  I was curious if there are logical reasons here for the difference.
In case it matters ... home movie (birthday parties, spring break trip, etc.), target output is playback on PC and PS3, and then Blu-ray disc.   I've given up on the one file concept and was leaning towards an .mp4 and then separate .m4v/.wav files to feed to Encore.   Curious what you would set for bit rates, if you would go VBR 2-pass, etc. (encoding time is not an issue).
    Thanks

Blu-ray has bitrate limitations that computer files don't.  (That's my guess on why the difference.)
Anyway, a preset is nothing more than a starting point, not the final authority on what you can export.

  • What is the maximum bit rate for a short NTSC standard def DVD?

I have about 30 minutes of content from FCP that I want to put on a DVD.
At first I tried iDVD and had problems with burning (although I did somehow make one DVD). So I built the project on DVD SP and made a DVD. However, the iDVD version looked much better. I checked out the file sizes and saw that there was 2 gigs on iDVD and only 1.6 DVD SP. Then I discovered the encoding options on DVD SP and I was curious what is the recommended average and maximum bit rate should be for the highest quality, yet still works in most DVD players?
    Thanks.

    DVD Bandwidth
The rate is not based on running time.
    Some thoughts on rates
7.2 - 8.0 seems to be the general consensus for discs from computers. I play more conservative for the reasson listed in that link

  • Best Bit Rate for Better sound

I’m new to the iTunes/iPod thing. A friend told me that he re-sets the bit rate from the default of 128 kpbs to the top of 320 kbps for better quality. [He plays everything off of his computer which is wired to speakers throughout his house and does not travel or drive much so hardly uses his iPod.] I played around a tad with the various rates on the same album and found that a fairly short one used 34.9 MB at 128 kbps, 52.1 MB at 192 kbps, 60.8 MB at 224 kbps and 86.6 MB at 340 kbps. Another friend told me that he noticed a big difference when he played a song off his iPod through his several thousand dollar system if it was imported at 128 kbps. While hard disc space is cheap and I would simply opt for the higher quality setting, the iPods are not so big when one almost triples the file size.
I tried to figure out what the max bit rates in the CDs are so that could guide the max import rate, but I could not and that question may make no sense at all anyway.
What is the max that a human can notice the difference at and what have folks found to be the best balance between sound quality and storage space?
    Thanks for your help.
    PC   Windows XP

Monty, this is really going to be up to your ears to decide. All I can tell you is my experience during the 2+ years of owning an iPod. I initially thought AAC @ 128 was satisfactory. I then started experimenting with various bitrates, but kept the AAC format. I decided that 192 was a discernible improvement over the 128. Not to go into a lot of detail, but I, quite by accident, had one album download at 256 & thought, "Wow, this is unbelievably better sound, even over inexpensive computer speakers." At that point, I started importing everything in AAC @ 256 VBR which I feel is pretty darn close to CD quality sound. I have a 60GB iPod that I'm willing to sacrifice some capacity in order to ensure the best audio quality I can. This is also why I do not buy frequently from the iTunes store as I do not feel the 128 downloads are the best quality. I buy & my own CD's, now, to insure good quality. I will by the occasional song from the store when I do not care to buy the whole CD. Hope this helps!

  • Best average bit rate & max bit rate for DVDs playing on laptops...

I encode and burn many DVDs for use in regular DVD players....usually in the half hour range and have been encoding with Compressor 3 using these specs:
    6.6 average bit rate
    7.8 max bit rate
Those same DVDs, which play flawlessly in the DVD players, can occasionally hiccup when played from a laptop. Should I change the max bit rate from 7.8 to 7.7. or lower? Is that the biggest part of the equasion that may affect a laptop's ability to play without choking?
    Many thanks,
    John

Thanks for all your help, David S, but the point is
that I have tried many different bit rates, from 4.0
to 7.0, and I don't have time to waste all day trying
different bit rates for an 8-minute project.
My main question is: Why would it work fine on all
of my other short projects, including the 8-minute
one, and then when I cut out 20 seconds of that same
    project, it starts screwing up!?!
I am going to try trashing my preferences. It is
starting to seem like a corrupt pref file to me.
It turned out to be a corrupt pref file, as I thought. Thanks for your many, many questions, David S.

  • Sample/bit rate for Garage Band '08

Hello, I don't have a Mac yet, but am going to get the mini soon and do some acoustic/keyboard stuff in Garage Band to get back into recording. What is the sample and bit rate for the new version? I had read that older versions were 16?

The sample rate is fixed at 44.1kHz. The bit depth (audio resolution) is selectable at either 16 bits or 24 bits.
