Short name conflict local account versus server account

I have just finished the first setup of Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server 10.6.4. I wanted to create my first server account in Server Preferences. I wanted to follow the following note from page 90 of Getting Started v10.6:
Note: If a user already has a short name on a Mac, try to use the same short name for the user’s account on the server. Having the same short name facilitates the user’s access to services.
I got an error message saying I can't create the server account because it has to be unique. The reason for this is that I already used the short name for the local primary administrator account which I created during the setup.
What is the best way to deal with it?
I guess I could create a new local administrator account and delete the one I used for the initial setup. I wonder if that would have any negative consequences. The UID would not be 501.
Any help is highly appreciated.

You can change the UID if need be via System Preferences/Accounts/Advanced Options which is a right-click on your account’s name while not locked.

  • How can I change the "short name" of my account?

    I want to change the short name of my account because when my dad bought this computer for me he set up the account with his name as the short name and it has been bothering me ever since.
    When I go to system preferences and then accounts my account is listed and when I click on it under password I am able to change my name, but not my short name because it is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Is there any way to change the short name on my account? I can't even delete my account and make a new one because the account delete button is greyed out when I click on my account.
    Also, I went to my home folder and changed that from my dad's name to my name. This has reset every program on my computer to default settings! For example when I open my Safari browser a message pops up saying a keychain cannot be found to store Safari and asks me if I want to restore default settings.
    So pretty much I've tried to change the short name on my administrative account, I reset everything to default settings and my short name is still my father's name. Can anyone help me out here?

    Try this.
    Or you could just create a new account and delete the old one.

  • Changing 'short name' in Admin account?

    I'm using a computer at work that was previously used and administered by a former employee who has since left the company. I need everything to maintain exactly the same settings since I need to work on this computer in the same fashion as the former user. I was provided with the old password and I've changed the account (the only one on the machine) to now have my user ID and password etc. but the 'short name' is still this other person's name. I don't see any way to change this short of creating a new admin account and then deleting the old one, but then I loose all the settings, prefs etc. from the existing account which I really can't do since I need all of those settings to get my work done on this machine.
    Is there any work-around that I can use to modify the short name in the existing admin account, or alternately is there a way to duplicate an entire account with it's settings intact so that I can rename it with my own user name, short name and password?
    Thanks a lot for any help you can provide!

  • Changing short name- misplaced original account information

    I was attempting to change the short name on my user account with two methods- the terminal command (didn't prompt me for my password after changing the name) and the root account option. When I try to log back into my old user account it takes it back to the bare start up-when you start a new account I assume because I didn't reset the home folder. I seem to have misplaced the file that kept all the orgininal account information. I can search in the root account to access all the files, but I don't know how I can set up my original user account. In essence I want to compile all of the searchable data that I have in the root account back into one file that will allow me to set up my original account, but with a new user name.

  • Accidentally deleted my short name from the accounts tab. Now I go back and make changes.

    I'm running 10.6.8
    I was trying to change the terminal name from nicholas-shook's-macbook-pro:~ nicholasshook$ to something shorter. I started by changing my computer name via System Pref >> Sharing, and tried to change my shortname via System Pref >> Accounts. I deleted the shortname after right-clicking my name on the left panel thinking that it would get rid of it in the terminal.
    Now when I try to make changes to the Accounts tab it asks me to "type an administrator's name and password to allow System Preferences to make changes" instead of just asking for the password. I've tried nicholasshook and Nicholas Shook (what it shows up as when I come back to my computer after its been asleep).
    Please help me get back to the shortname so I can not make it empty.
    Thanks,

    That isn't working for me. The space is BLANK. No pins, no x's. Just blank. That's what I'm trying to restore.

  • Managing Computers with 10.5 Server, but NOT managing Local accounts?

    I'll try my best to be clear here - I'm new to 10.5 Server and a functioning Open Directory environment! (formerly used 10.3 Server and never had the OD working).
    Environment:
    School (K-8), with old iMac G3's (10.3.9), eMacs (10.4.11) and a smattering of Mini's and iMacs (10.5.x).
    Server:
    10.5 Server, OpenDirectory and DNS appear to be working perfectly.
    User Accounts:
    Staff members have accounts for logging into sharepoints.
    No one (yet!) has server based home directories except a couple for testing.
    On each computer there is a "staff" account and a "student" account.
    These are LOCAL accounts, and do NOT have same-named accounts on the Server.
    I have bound client computers to the Server by OpenDirector
    dsconfigldap -v -f -a servername.domain.org -n configname -u diradmin -p adminpass
    Now comes the trouble;
    I have added the computers to the Workgroup Manager computers list.
    I have applied computer preference settings for the Energy Saver preferences ONLY. THey appear to have worked (managed computers slept/shut-down/started up according to the managed preference).
    NOW comes the real problem;
    The "staff" account on the managed computers is denying access to most applications on the computer!
    Note: this "Staff" account is local ONLY, and is NOT a server-hosted account.
    I have NOT tried to manage the computer preferences for applications on these computers.
    I can resolve the problem by unbinding the computer from the OD Server - but I'd prefer not to do that. I just got them all bound! And, it screws up my migration plan TOWARDS server-hosted home directories.
    I have tried managing application prefs for a COMPUTER, only to have both the STaff and Student account lose ALL of their local-only application managment settings (all of a sudden, Students can open terminal, grading programs, etc).
    I am obviously missing something!
    At this point, I'd like to back up... to NOT having my Server interfereing with the local accounts until I'm further along mapping out my migration from local-only accounts with file sharing access to Server hosted accounts and server managed preferences.
    (I will also admit I'm a bit confused about when to manage USER preferences, vs when to use managed COMPUTER preferences.).
    Tips appreciated!

    Your last question - using managed user vs. computer preferences got my attention. Mostly, I use Group managed preferences. I do use computer preferences for a laptop cart, other than that I use group preferences. Perhaps your situation calls for managing users, but using group preferences allows me to change the settings for a bunch of people all at once rather than changing settings for each user.
    In any event, check all the managed preferences for your computer level settings. And since you're using a 10.5 server, you have to check the settings for clients that are running 10.4 and earlier as well as the settings for 10.5 and later clients, as they are different.
    At the user level, if you have an OD account and a local account with the same name, the local account will determine what the user can do - I honestly don't know if managed computer prefs will override local settings, but you should look into it. This could be your problem.
    At the very least, you should avoid "testing" with systems that folks are using if you want to avoid the frustration that you are now encountering (speaking from experience i.e. similar mistakes, not preaching).

  • Changing administrator user name or short name in accounts, OS upgrade

    I just inherited an older MacBook Pro. (15-inch, 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo, OSX 10.4.11).
    I was able to change most account info, however former user's short name still appears as the short name in adm account and in the home page sidebar. How can I change this? (I understand there is a third party utility -- Change Short Name -- that claims to easily do this, but I'm reluctant to use any third party app if there is a Apple-endorsed way to accomplish the task.)
    Do I need to set up a new administrator account on the computer in order to delete his info?
    Also, eventually, I need to delete a lot of programs and files from computer. Bloated. My first thought is to simply do a clean reinstall since there's really nothing on the computer that I need. (However the original install discs were lost in a move, and I'll need to contact Apple for replacement.) I've read post advising against this approach because of the number of updates needed and due to uncited problems. Has anyone experienced any problems with this approach on this model -- before I purchase old install discs.
    Is better option to purchase Snow Leopard. I have it installed on Mac Pro at work. I like it and have not experienced any problems. Anyone experience problems with SL on this model of MBP.
    Thanks in advance for the help.

    [Adding a new user account to your computer|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html] You just need to make sure that the new account is set to be an administrator account. Then you log into the new account and remove the old account from there. There shouldn't be any implications to doing this but it is always a good idea to make sure you have a fully bootable (cloned) backup before doing modifications.
    As mentioned before, ideally you should just wipe wipe the drive and start afresh. This ensures any corrupt files, or hidden files, are removed. However, you will need the installer disc to do this. Since you no longer have the Tiger one it might be worth just going for Snow Leopard. However, one advantage to getting replacement original discs from Apple is they contain special software for diagnosing problems on your specific model computer that isn't in a retail set of discs.
    Cloning And Backup Tools
    A bootable clone is an exact copy of your drive which is capable of booting your computer. Making a copy of your computer which is capable of actually starting the computer requires special copying procedures. Some people just back up data files but if you have problems you have to reinstall all your operating system and all your applications. With a bootable clone you just start up from the backup drive and clone back everything.
    To copy files from one hard drive to another hard drive you can use:

  • Best Practice: changing a user's short name?

    I administer the OS X Servers and user accounts at my school, where typically a few teachers will come back from the summer having gotten married and changed their names.
    We use a standard for usernames of first letter of first name and last name, where Ann Smith is 'asmith' - when she goes and gets married and wants to be 'ajones' at the beginning of this year, what is the best way to go about this change?
    Users have network homes, and IMAP email is on a separate server. Here is what I was thinking:
    For the user's files, make a new user with their new username, 'ditto' the contents of the old username's home folder to the new username, and chown/chmod the new folder's contents to match the correct permissions.
    For the user's mail, use SirAdmin to add ACL's to the old username's mail folders to be able to read them as the new username, have the new username set up their mail and copy the contents of the old username's mail to their new IMAP folder(s).
    Does this make sense or is this far too complicated?
    Do I just tell these users to log in using their old name and burn their essentials to a DVD and just worry about helping them with their emails?
    Any and all suggestions would be appreciated -- thanks
    BC

    Hi Blair
    These look like good methods to me and should work. You could consider creating a second short name - something suitable like their first name instead? Enable Mobile Account (PHD) for the affected users and log in using that short name. Their account should now be created locally as well.
    If you have only a handful you could use a spare machine to do it with yourself? More on this later.
    If you these users have IMAP accounts you could enable POP for them as well. As you/they log in to download from the server their current home folder their mail should be downloaded also.
    What you have after that is effectively a back up of their home folders and mail kept locally on a client machine or a designated machine you decided to use. Delete their account, create the new long and short names, create the additional short name (exactly as it was before), log in with those details and upload the locally stored information back to the server. There should be no need to worry about permissions etc.
    What you could do is send an email to the affected users outlining the steps they need to take to achieve what you want. Minimal effort with maximum gain.
    When you are happy kill the mobile account option as well as deleting the additional short name. Send another mail advising they use the first short name for logging in. There'll be a little tidying up to do in deleting the locally created home folders but you can do this at your leisure using VNC.
    I would have in place one of the other methods as well - just in case.

  • Short Name for same user results in different service authorization

    New to Mac Server. Not new to Unix, command line, or sys admin.
    I have a Mini Server, with two users; me and my wife.
    Both Accounts have two short names each: Initals+Lastname, and First Name only
    With iChat on the server, my account can login using both short names.
    Her account can only login to iChat using the Initals+Lastname, not First Name.
    Actually her account can log in to iChat using any variation of short names (I've added extra ones), but not the short name of just her first name.
    Both users have identical permissions everywhere I can see, both are authorized for iChat.
    The short name works if I remove permissions on iChat (I don't want to do this)
    Both users are OD users, not local. I only have an admin account for local access.
    Here is a snippet of the Jabber log:

    I'm stumped as to why one short name would work, the other not. Looking for hints on how to hunt down and solve the problem.

    This isn't working for me. There was never a local "intern2" account, but I deleted the one in the ldap anyway, made and removed the local intern2 account. I then remade the intern2 account in the ldap directory(which increased the uid), rebooted the server, and the error remains the same as what you report.
    Jun  8 13:36:00 server jabberd/c2s[212]: od_auth_check_service_membership: user "intern2" is not authorized to access service "chat"
    There are 12 other accounts connected just fine. The issue is with this new intern account only.

  • Permissions messed up after changing short name

    Hello all,
    Following the directions provided on the support website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106824), I successfully changed the short name of my account. I created a new user, used the root user to move the old files, and deleted the old account.
    However, I've run into several permissions problems. On many files, the permissions are set to "_unknown" and do not have my name listed.
    Is there any way to mass change the permissions of these files?
    Thank you very much for any assistance!

    That ND Sounds folder is strange. I'm thinking about just deleting it or creating a new folder.
    No need. the command we tried before didn't work on it because it wasn't owned by you. Now it is so we should be able to change permissions easily. Also, I would recommend setting rwx permissions for you and no access for anybody else on everything in your Music folder.
    To do that run
    *chmod -R 700 ~/Music*
    You can do it for other folders like your Documents and you Desktop folders.
    I checked some of the files in the folders (for example, the iTunes music folder in the iTunes folder) and it looks like I'm the owner!
    yes, the command I gave you took care of that.
    Anything I can do about the applications folder?
    what's wrong with it?

  • Short name in main accouny

    how can i change the short name in my account ?

    download <change shortname> by Dan Frakes. The Apple website has a method but it is more complicated. Read the warnings on both methods.Make sure if you can that each works on the latest version of the OS on your machine.
    I have used neither. I was about to some time ago but an HD failure meant I had to start afresh, and that obviated the need for either. The best advice however is live with it unless there is a material reason to change.

  • Publish iCal Local Account Calendar on OS X Server

    I'd like to publish my iCal calendar (iCal>Calendar>Publish...>Publish on: A private server) on my OS X Server 10.6.7 ().
    Whenever I attempt to do this using my local account on tthe server, I get the error:
    http://username@domain_name/Home.ics is not a location that supports this request.
    I've tried all the obvious stuff: turning off the firewall, sanity checking the iCal service authentication settings, everything obvious. I believe that this is an authentication issue for local accounts on OS X Server. Because the server is set up as a standalone (i.e., no network accounts, all local accounts), Open Directory is turned off, and there's no Kerberos authentication that I'm aware of.
    Would someone please tell me how how to publish iCal calendars of local accounts on OS X Server?

    According to iCal Server Administration, OS X Server requires an Open Directory account, so you cannot publish your local account's iCal calendar.
    You can, however, use iCal itself and a modification of the OS X Hint "Publish iCal calendars with local WebDAV server" to publish local account calendars.
    0. Server Admin>Web>Sites Turn on the Web with an enabled host name. Make sure that WebDAV is enabled under Server Admin>Web>Sites>Options. Enable SSL with your server's certificate under Server Admin>Web>Sites>Security to ensure that your personal calendar information is SSL encrypted over the web.
    1. Append this directive to the end of the file /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf:
    Include /private/etc/apache2/other/*.conf
    and make sure that there's no conf file in ./other that you may not wish to load, such as httpd-userdir.conf. Move these to *.conf.original or some such if necessary.
    2. Create the file /private/etc/apache2/other/httpd-webdav.conf with the contents:
    # WebDAV configureation for Publishing local account iCal calendars
    #  Based in part on Mac OS X Hint "iPublish iCal calendars with local WebDAV server Apps"
    # http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20020912065811863
    # copied from /etc/apache2/sites/0000_any_443_myserver.conf
    # which is automatically generated by Server Admin>Web
    # No need to replicate these directives here, so comment out
    #<IfModule mod_dav.c>
    #       DAVLockDB "/var/run/davlocks/.davlock100"
    #       DAVMinTimeout 600
    #</IfModule>
    <IfModule mod_dav.c>
      <Directory "/Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav">
        DAV On
        AuthType Digest
        AuthName 'WebDAV'
        AuthDigestFile /private/etc/apache2/httpd/.htdigest
        AuthGroupFile /dev/null
    #    <LimitExcept GET HEAD OPTIONS>
          require valid-user
    #    </LimitExcept>
      </Directory>
    </IfModule>
    3. Create the apache htdigest authentication file:
    $ mkdir /private/etc/apache2/httpd
    $ chmod 0755 /private/etc/apache2/httpd
    $ touch /private/etc/apache2/httpd/.htdigest
    $ chmod 0644 /private/etc/apache2/httpd/.htdigest
    $ htdigest /private/etc/apache2/httpd/.htdigest WebDAV username
    Adding password for username in realm WebDAV.
    New password: md5 hashed password
    Re-type new password: md5 hashed password
    4. Create the WebDAV directory:
    $ mkdir /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav
    $ chown www:www /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav
    $ chmod 0755 /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav
    $ mkdir /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav/iCal
    $ chown www:www /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav/iCal
    $ chmod 0755 /Library/WebServer/Documents/webdav/iCal
    and sanity check that the OS X Server davlocks directory /var/run/davlocks exists [it should!] and has www:www ownership with permissions 755 [it should!].
    5. Sanity check your apache config files:
    $ apachectl -t
    should yield "Syntax OK". Then Server Admin>Web>Stop and Start to restart your web server with the new configuration.
    5. Under your local account on OS X Server, iCal>Calendar>Publish... Publish on a private server with the URL:
    https://osxserver/webdav/iCal
    using OS X Server's local account username/password. Success will be reported with a URL of your calendar on the server.
    6. Under another client account from which you wish to subscript to your OS X Server local account's Calender, iCal>Calender>Subscribe... Enter the URL on OS X Server. You will be prompted for the htdigest name/password pair you created above -- enter this, not the username/password of your local account on OS X Server. Even though you should be protecting this channel with SSL and md5, don't reuse your username/password to access the WebDAV directory you created. You will now be subscribed to your local account's iCal Calendar residing on OS X Server.
