Short name password- no clue! Help!

Well, my short name has a password to change anything in the domain- don't have a CLUE what it is!
Any tricks for this? My hint is meaningless to me...

Yes, I'm Administrator, it's the domain password which I probably shouldn't be screwing around in anyway, all indications found digging around post-post are that it should be my master password but it doesn't work, and of COURSE I have my original install discs! But an archival reinstall keeps problems along with one's music collection sometimes...
If I were hacking Macs I'd attach my trouble to vacation pics, not the root operating system. What gets kept? And I have to reload the OS, a run of Tech Tool says it's time. I just don't care to save any hacker's little secrets in a fresh new install.

  • RENAMED SHORT NAME!!! HELP HELP HELP HELP

ok. i did a very stupid thing today..
for some reason i decided to 'apple i' my home folder..
essentially my shortname. and change it..
    my powerbook didn't like that.
so, it created a new user and has 'lost data'.
simply meaning all my files are in a username 'rob'.
    is this making sense?
anybody out there can help an idiot?
    thanks

Yes, as you have learned this is a big oops!

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 server app. FTP help. I have a program running in my local server enviroment that wants to FTP to my mac folder. It asks for the server , name, password, port and path. what are they?

So I have set up a localhost area in my Mac. I have the new server.app and I am running yosemite 10.10.2 .
I have a program running in my local server enviroment that wants to FTP to my mac .
It asks for the server , name, password, port and path. what are they?
I am pretty certain that the Serveris "localhost",
Name is my macs name (like my-mac-min)
    password is "my login password"
    and they suggest port 21.
But what is the file path, lets just say my site is set up http://localhost/siteftp and is actually at my Users/Sites/siteftp folder.
Why cant this program connect to the mac.
Is it because they are both operating in the same localhost enviroment,
could it be my folder permissions are not correct on siteftp folder?
    Help please !

I tried turning the computer off and then back on. The alerts don't show the notice to update as resolved. Hopefully this is not a problem or an indicator or another problem. Should I ignore or reload 10.10.1 from the app store to trigger a resolved check in a green circle?
Interesting that I had to buy server software after my free Yosemite download. I would have hoped that the two pieces of software would have gone together without any complication. It is not positive to end up buying a problem. Ah well, time to move on.

I am not able to signin using apple ID in imassge and face book it says user name or password wrong plz help

I think there has been a change in the password requirements for apple ID's.  I think it now needs to be eight characters long and have at least one capital letter and one number.  Got to appleid.apple.com and then to manage your account and change your password to something that meets the requirements I mentioned and see if that helps

  • Forms popup help - module implementation name must equal module short name.

I don't know if this was blatanly obvious, or if it has been already stated, but just in case it wasn't, I'll state it here.
Here is something that I noticed while trying to make the help system work. I found that the module's short name is stored in the CG_FORM_HELP (or any alternative name that one may use) table. However, when the form is generated, the key-help trigger sends the module's implementation name (only on property palette) to the procedure which calls the help form. I had modules with short names differing from the implementation name, and was forced to change the implementation name to match the short name in order to make the help system work correctly.
If anyone has problems with the user/help text from their modules, module components, and items not displaying (and maybe just the user/help text from the base tables showing up), then you may want to look into this.

I forgot to state that I was using Designer 6.0 Patchset 4 (6.0.3.8).

  • Botched short name change attempt has left me with no permissions! Help!

Early on, my MacBook Pro's hard drive ground to a halt and I had to fork out to get it restored. When it came back, my administrative account was no longer named "Will", but "macbookpro".
I changed the username simply, but was always bothered by the home folder being called "macbookpro". After buying a WD MyBook and backing up my "macbookpro" user folder with the WD Anywhere application, I (stupidly) decided to follow an outdated Apple guide ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428 ) on how to change the short name via Terminal and root - something I now realise is no longer necessary in Leopard.
When adding the new account to replace "macbookpro" with, I couldn't, as the existing account had the username I wanted already, just not the short name. I changed what I thought was the username for what I thought was a temporary amount of time from "Will" to "William", so they had different names and I could proceed.
I followed the rest of the guide up to the point where I log on as new user. Forgetting I wasn't finished, I fired up Adium - which acted like it had never seen me before (something I don't really mind), and to this moment it has refused to sign in to MSN, but does AIM perfectly.
After being puzzled by Adium I continued the process, finding not "the keychain, which should still have the short name of the original user", but "login.keychain" - I left it.
Giving up and continuing to use my computer, I attempted to update Camino by downloading the latest version whilst simultaneously resetting all of my Application preferences to how they were before.
On dragging Camino to Applications, I was told I did not have sufficient privileges to do anything but view it. Everything except what is in my new home folder is read-only.
Sharing and Permissions shows me that macbookpro is the only account with jurisdiction over Applications - Read & Write, whereas groups "admin" and "everyone" are Read only.
For most other files, "system" and "admin" have Read & Write permissions, except in the System folder where only system has, whilst "wheel" and "everyone" can only read.
In my panic, I renamed "William" to "macbookpro" again, meaning that when I log onto my (now completely reset and devoid of preferences) original macbookpro account, I have my permissions mostly back.
You'd think I would then simply revert to using macbookpro and changing all my preferences, using the Leopard short name change - but "macbookpro" doesn't seem to be able to open ANY applications. At all. For no good reason.
Short of going through every single file on the hard drive manually and changing the permissions to allow "Will" to read and write, I can't solve this!
This puts a massive hindrance on my use of this computer, and I don't want to edit permissions on each file as I need it and then discover the only solution is to completely restart!
    Please, somebody help!

If anybody ever has a similar problem, here's how I solved it as best as I could:
http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/Welcome.html BatChmod is a tool for batch editing file permissions.
It fixed my Applications and Library, and I can now read and write to both folders.
I dragged solely the contents of Application Support from my backup over the existing Application Support folder within my user's library, and that restored a few, but not all, of my Application Preferences.

  • Right or Wrong? help: user account short name has Capital First Letter

    Hello
I have the same issue as a post in the Mountain Lion discussion group.  It doesn't seem to be getting an answer.  So I thought I would post it here, being that I do have Snow Leopard.
The Mountain Lion post is here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21665861#21665861
    Here is MY question::
Can anyone answer this?  I have this same thing.  I've had this Mac since 2010, too, I think, at least two years.  I don't remember being asked to use lowercase, nor actually typing in the Capital letter.  I stumbled upon the realization when I was using my Macbook and my user name whille different does use all lowercase.  The Macbook is newer.
I've been running this Mac with the first letter Capital for the short name with no problems that I know of.  I do have Time Machine backups that I don't really want to lose access to.
What are the benefits and pitfalls of using the method etresoft explains to change it to all lowercase??  Should I do it just to do it and be in line with Apple's guidelines or should I leave well enough alone??  Which way will cause me MORE problems?  Running with the Capital letter or going through the process of changing it to lowercase??
What kind of problems will I run into if I change it or don't change it???
Where "oldshortname" is your old user name and "newshortname" is the user name you want to change it to. Keep in mind that both oldshortname and newshortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters or numbers.
And, Padgreen has an excellent point -- how do we do this change process if our Old Shortname is Shortname??  How can we type "shortname" for the "oldshortname" if our shortname is not all lowercase??
    etresoft -- are you around??
    Or someone else?  Thanks!!
(the only thing I can even think of as a problem is when I copy files/folders over to my Macbook - it sometimes makes "nobody" the owner of the file/folder and I find out when I try to edit or move the file. I can usually just change the owner and everything is fine.  I don't know if this is related or not.)

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428 states:
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.

Impossible, there are zero, as in none, zip, nadda viruses for OS X. If you have viruses on it they are for MS Windows and will not affect OS X. I suspect the hard disk has crashed, if you have backup then it's not a big deal to have it changed, just take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for service. If you have not been backing it up you may be in for a painful lesson on why backup is critical.

  • Can I Change Home Name and Short Name This Way (Safely)?

Tried this question a couple weeks ago and got 0 replies in the Admin/Accounts section, so I'm revising and trying here. Please help!
Let me see if I can make this simple.
Small office environment; 2 Mac (G4's); Airport network. I am admin on both computers. My employee is admin on his computer as well, but not on mine. Each of us has data we use on our own computer but we can access data from the other computer when necessary. We use the same password to login (just for simplicity). My user name is "Joe Smith" and my assistant's is "Bob Lee Brown." His short name is "blb".
My assistant is moving out of town and I'm hiring someone else. I'd like to set up a new user with that person's name ("Jane Jones"). I'd like the entire "Bob Lee Brown" and "blb" off the computer, and have that replaced by "Jane Jones" and "jj" (for a short name) everywhere, for the new assistant. I want to make sure we're still 100% networked when I get done, and that I can still admin both accounts but my new assistant can't admin my computer. In other words, I'd like a clone of what I have now, only with the names changed everywhere.
So - here's the question (in multi-part format):
Should I create a new Admin account on the assistnat's computer, log in as that one and delete the existing one, saving the user prefernces from the deleted user?
In this event, could i take the deleted user file that's saved and import back in all the user preferences - particularly for Word and Entourage?
If this is the right way to go, what would I have to do on my computer to complete the network process? Any keychain issues I'd have to deal with (what and how?)?
Or, should I use ChangeShortName v1.2 (which I've read about in other posts)? Is that safe?
Or should I just tell my new assistant that she's stuck with a he's name and leave well enough alone?
Thanks - been on Macs since 1984, but never had to do this one before and I'm a little concerned I might mess something up without some step-by-step instructions!

I have used ChangeShortName once and it worked fine; a real timesaver. However, I would backup the /Users folder (or the whole drive) and repair permissions first to be on the safe side.

  • How can I change the "short name" of my account?

I want to change the short name of my account because when my dad bought this computer for me he set up the account with his name as the short name and it has been bothering me ever since.
When I go to system preferences and then accounts my account is listed and when I click on it under password I am able to change my name, but not my short name because it is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Is there any way to change the short name on my account? I can't even delete my account and make a new one because the account delete button is greyed out when I click on my account.
Also, I went to my home folder and changed that from my dad's name to my name. This has reset every program on my computer to default settings! For example when I open my Safari browser a message pops up saying a keychain cannot be found to store Safari and asks me if I want to restore default settings.
So pretty much I've tried to change the short name on my administrative account, I reset everything to default settings and my short name is still my father's name. Can anyone help me out here?

    Try this.
Or you could just create a new account and delete the old one.

  • How to change users short name in 10.7 Server version?  Command line possible?

I just migrated from Snow Leo 10.6 Server to Lion 10.7 server.  All seems ok except for one user (me!).  It seems my short name is different.  It was Goerge Smith but now it is just George.   And All users can login and get mail etc, but not me.
I try to reset password using Updated Workgroup utiliity and new Server App, but the app refuses to allow rest of password or chnage of short user name.
All other users seem ok and their names, atributes, passwords can be easily reset.   So both Open Directoty and NDS ( all the normal cast of troublemakes) do not seem to be at issue.
Clearly something odd or unexpected happened in migration of Open Directory users and attributes.
How can I change my User Shortname Back to the correct one?  Or Any ideas why my Password is locked, and cannot be reset?
I have rebooted sveral times, all other functions seem normal and working?  Mystified!!   Help?

Someone in the Lion Server Forum might know?

  • Can not login after changing account short name and home directory

    Hi,
I did sth rather stupid while trying a get timemachine working on my iMac 10.5.5.
I changed the short name, login shell and home directory of my account. (didn't listen to the waning that I may not be able to login if I change those information Now I can not log into my account anymore. I tried to use fileVault master password to change the password of my account, but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me how do I fix this problem?
    Thanks a lot!

    xyz2008 wrote:
No, I still can not log in as that user.
I did as you advised, but it gave the following message:
"attache failed, no such file or directory"
then I suspect you may be entering the command incorrectly. another possibility is this. I noticed you said in one of the previous posts that if you cd into the main user home directory you only see user.sparseimage. It actually should be user.sparsebundle. Or have you upgraded to leopard from tiger with filevault turned on? then it could have remained sparseimage rather than sparsebundle.
    run the following in terminal
    sudo ls -la /users/username
    and post the results.
does it list sparsebundle or sparseimage?
Another thing, when I typed in the command, it didn't take the admin (root) password, but the password of the account I was logged in got me through.
that's what it has to be. it takes the password of the user (it jhas to be an admin user) which is currently logged in.
I am wondering if I can recover the problem user's files from the sparseimage file, then copied all the files to a new user.
