Short Read/CD Burn Directions

I keep getting a short read error. I have access to the official disks, and it does not give me this error. Since most of the install CD is "hidden", I don't know if there is a special way to burn it. Both only show 120K on them, but the offical one will boot, while the one I burned gives me an error.
Any idea how to get around this, I am borrowing the official discs and want to have a set with me at all times.
Thanks for any assistance

I just realized that I have the same problem (been a while since I put in any sort of CD, so don't know when it started or what might have triggered it). My Mac Pro's Superdrive recognizes DVDs, blank or not, but no CDs, blank or not, commercial software or burned discs.
Resetting PRAM didn't help. Would like to know if this is a software/settings problem or hardware problem before I take any drastic measures.

  • Burning Directly to DVD

I have a fully automated Keynote presentation (timed music and slides) which I need to burn directly to a DVD. In the past I have been unhappy with using iDVD for various reasons.
What would be the best way, and provide the highest quality, to burn this presentation to a DVD, to run on 'normal' DVD players?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.
    Bill J.

    I'll address both questions..
#1, I have Toast, iDVD and DVD Studio Pro...You can probably guess which one I use when making a custom DVD. I haven't used Toast, but if it's got an auto play feature I'd use that. I use iDVD quite a lot, though I sometimes pick one of the really old themes, especially if I'm giving a DVD to someone who's going to play it on a screen. I pick a still menu with NO music, so that they can keep the audio up and not have to mute the thing.
#2, Here's a lesson in resolution...DV and the DVD format use the same res for standard TV...that's 720x480 (looks like 640x480 on a TV because the pixels aren't square). People have said they sometimes get better quality letting iDVD do the conversion from Animation to Mpegs (DVD format) skipping the DV file altogether. I should mention you'll likely want to export your preso at 720x540 if you're using Animation right into iDVD. Otherwise it might scale your show badly.
But if you want to go through iMovie first, you're dropping into DV space right away. My recomendation if you're doing that is to go ahead and tell Keynote you're exporting to iDVD...let it make a DV movie for you. It'll open iDVD, but you can just quit it right away. Look for the DV movie file (might end in .mov) that Keynote created for you...and pull THAT into iMovie. DOn't worry if it looks bad, iMovie doesn't show you the full quality image, it shows a reference file. If you want to check it on a TV, connect a DV camcorder to iMovie and turn on the pref that lets you preview out the camcorder. Then connect a TV to the camcorder and watch your movie on the TV.
Just remember you're going from 1024x768 solid images to 720x480 interlaced, you're GOING to lose quality, and you're going to get flicker, especially in thin white lines and text. Photos too will tend to flicker.
The really good stuff you see on TV is really processed for color before it goes out, so unless you have at the least Final Cut Express (so you can apply softening, flicker filters and other color filters) you might not be happy with what you get.
    Hope that helps!

  • Short read on DerValue buffer

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.
I am using Flex Builder 3 to export a build of my Air application and when I select my certificate and type in the password, I get the following error to appear directly under the "Digital Signature" header next to a red X:
java.io.IOException: short read on DerValue buffer
Can someone tell me what this means, or better yet, how to fix this error? I cannot seem to find any information other then the actual java code that throws the error.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • My HP8000 ptr will not print via time capsule showing problem as "...short read".  I've reset the printing sys on both MacBooks and the iBOOK?  Can you help?

I have been using a HP8000 printer via the USB connection on a TimeCapsule using wifi from a MacBook, MacBookPro and an iMAC (ethernet connected to Time Capsule) for a couple years before the printing stopped with a message of ".....short read" The printer still functions when directly connected to a Mac via a USB cable. Help???

Suggest that you work your way through Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide to see if you can get things going again.
The last item....reset printing system....will often work when all else fails, but try the other steps first.

I bought a used PowerMacPC G5. I can burn and read DVDs, but I can't read or burn CDs. The CDs are not even recognized. After the drive searches for a while, the CD is ejected without any error messages. The CDs work okay on my iMac.
I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?

  • "Short read error" after patching solaris 10 x86?

We recently bought an Ultra 20 with Solaris 10. The first thing we did was attempt to patch it with smpatch. Specifically, we did the following steps:
    > smpatch update
    > shutdown -i s -g 0
    > smpatch add -x idlist=/var/sadm/disallowed_patch_list
    > reboot
When the machine rebooted we got a "short read error" message when trying to load in various drivers and wouldn't boot. We assumed that the disk had crashed and we reinstalled solaris from the DVDs. After the reinstallation, we went to patch the machine again, with the same steps, and exactly the same thing happened!
So is there something wrong with patching solaris 10 on x86? Has anybody else experienced this problem where the patching corrupts the disks (or the drivers)?
    Thanks.
    Karl

There have always been "short read error"s during boot on <b>some</b> systems with Solaris 10 x86 since the release.

Do you get the error every time during boot? Sometimes it helps to
press <RETURN> at the boot prompt, and not let the system wait for
    the five second timeout.

    Can anyoe help please ?

    Hey,
Ok, your notebook isnt able to read or burn disks but what does this mean exactly?
Is your drive listed in device manager?
=> You could try to remove it and restart your notebook.
Do you see yellow exclamation marks in device manager on ODD?
=> Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Its known issue.
Do you get an error message if you try bruning a disk?
=> Try another burning program like CD Burner XP
Have you checked the Toshiba website for a firmware update?
    Which OS you are using?

  • Issues reading and burning with superdrive (mac pro 1.1)

I am starting to experience a very annoying issue: the superdrive in my mac pro started to get bonk; not reading dvd that i burned some time ago with nero on pc; then it started to cause issues while burning with any software (finder, disk utility, toast on mac, and also nero and clonecd using parallels and bootcamp.
The drive in my machine is a IDE Optiarc AD-7170A (that should be either a NEC or a Sony; but either firmware is not recognized by the drive)
The media that i am using are MEmorex -R and DL +R; both of them were working just fine earlier ( i do not burn anything since 6-7 months ago).
Now this is what happens: I get errors while burning, but not while doing the simulation; the error appear at any speed (tried 2X and up); and i tried with ISO images, DMG, just dragging stuff from my desktop and the result is the same: no writing and error message right after the lead-in (i assume; since it stays on lead-in on toaster).
Using bootcamp and vista, with Nero; I get a calibration error; and if i use the built in feature to burn data in vista, i get an error too.
Now; I would give a shot to another brand of media (verbatim? TDK?); but the fact that i cannot burn anything in any OS with any software would be a clear sign that something is wrong either on the drive or on the firmware; hence my request of help to anyone that experienced this issue
    - i cannot update the firmware (that i see as 1.N8); tried to go on the sony and nec sites and download their windows utility but no luck....the drive is not recognized; so i wonder if Apple has no way to let us update a firmware, what is the point of buying a superdrive instead of a normal dvd burner?
    - if my drive is broken....can i buy any dvd-rw drive and stick it in my mac pro?
    thanks for the help!

Thanks for the suggestion; I've installed a new dvd drive and now seems that everything is working fine!
I've also cleaned the old drive, taking it apart, and now at least i can use it as spare to read and burn in case that the new one would not work.

You need to buy yourself a different device which uses e-ink technology, like the most basic Kindle.

  • DVD/ CDROM Drive is not reading or burning discs

My DVD/ CD Rom Drive has stopped reading discs of any format.
I have tried to update the driver and have been told that I am running the most recent available. Following some research online I understand that it may be something to do with the recent upgrade of iTunes and that it causes some conflict with the device driver.
I have deleted the Upper and Lower Registries as advised by Microsoft but this also hasn't assisted me. I know the system is connecting to the hardware as it thinks the device "is working correctly", but it just isn't finding the discs.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

How do i get passed choose a menue,I have finished editing rendering unable to go to Burn directly to disc, Help would be appreciated, thank you Gordon

    Gordon
    Thanks for the additional information.
After you have your Timeline content ready for export with destination burn to disc, if you do not go to Tools Menu/Movie Menu to apply disc menus and you go instead directly to Publish+Share/Disc, you will get an automatic message for a Yes or No answer with regard to disc menus.
If you do not want menus, then just click No and you should next see the following
where you make your burn to choice.
The Yes or No message should be for Publish+Share/Disc and not Publish+Share/Computer.
You cannot export a file with menus to the hard drive.
If you went Timeline content, Tools Menu/Movie Menu, and applied a menu, and then decided that you do not want a menu, the go to the top of the Movie Menu customization area and click on Reset, followed by Done. And, then go to Publish+Share/Computer and your choice for the export to file saved to the computer hard drive.
Please review the above and let us know if you are OK with the above details.
    Thank you.

  • NTSC project timeline length is shorter on actual burned DVD

    Hi everyone
I am working on authoring a series of DVDs of music concerts using Encore CS3. These have all been edited in Premiere (CS3). The footage was all acquired and edited in PAL, as I normally do, as we are UK-based. This project was then authored in Encore in PAL format - everything fine.
However, we have also made versions of these particular concerts in NTSC as there is worldwide market.  have converted the video to NTSC using GV Procoder 3, and inserted my rendered audio, slightly adjusted for sync - all fine, into a new NTSC Premiere project. This is re-rendered to M2V & AC3 files for the DVD. Again all fine. This is a long concert - the length of my timeline is 3;16;36;09. However when I check the finished DVD back in a DVD player or Windows Media player, the length has reduced to 3hr16min24sec. So approx 12 seconds shorter over the length of 3 1/4 hours. There appears to be no audio sync problem, or anything missed out, and the chapters are where they should be just everything is just that slight bit compressed. (i.e. halfway through is 6 seconds different between timeline and DVD)
I normally only make PAL DVDs, and have never encountered this before, so apologies if it's obvious to NTSC folk but would like reassurance that it's not something which I'm doing wrong!
Interestingly I have checked two other discs in the same series, which have been released, which have the same effect. 2hours 18min 47sec in Encore reduces to 2hours 18 mins 39 sec on DVD
Any reason for this? My PAL versions is exactly 3.16.40.00 on both!!
    Many thanks
    Daniel

    Hi Stan,
Thanks for the message. It appears that the conversion does shorten the total, though I'm not sure exactly why it does this, I'm sure it's to do with the frame rates. This is not my concern however, it's why the timeline in an Encore NTSC project appears 12 seconds shorter on the burned disc, a bit like a stretched elastic band being slighty less tensed!
Transcoded out of Premiere CS3 using Matrox Media encoder to M2V and AC3 and imported to Encore as compliant.
    Thanks

  • Satego X200-21D: TS-L632D DVD-Drive doesn't read and burn DVD-R DL

    Hallo,
I have problems with my SATEGO X200-21D DVD-Drive
TS-L632D to read an burn DVD-R DL discs.
I contacted the Toshiba-support via e-mail ans asked
for a new drive-firmware, but the answer did not solve my problem.
There are only updates in the toshiba download area,
but not for my drive model. I can send my notebook
for money to a service partner, to check this problem.
I can not understand this! I bought a highend notebook
for 1.700 EUR and it is no firmware update support
available to solve problems with newer discs?
If i search for this problem in the WEB, there an a lot of
questions and problems with reading and burning
DVD-R DL discs with this drive modell!
    How can it be???
I hope for some hints to get a firmware drive update
to fix the problems reading and writing DVD-R DL discs.

    Hi,
yes I have got the TS-L632D drive and not the TS-L632H - that is true. But why is no firmware update available for TS-L632D,
because also this drive has problems with DVD-DL discs!? I payed 1700,- EUR for my Thoshiba notebook with the
DVD-drive TS-L632D. And in my opinion it can't be, that for this drive version is no firmware update available!!!
Other companys (f. i. DELL , SAMSUNG) support this drive version and offer firmware updates for this drive modell.
It is a fact that my DVD-drive has problems to read and burn DVD-DL discs! This is a known fact for many drives and therfore
exists firmware updates for the DVD-drives to fix this problem. But why not for my drive modell???
My be it was an error to by a Toshiba Notebook!? I am a customer and I don't care what special
DVD-drive modell is in my notebook (TS-L632D , H or wwhat ever)!!!
My message to Thoshiba: "Pleas help me to solve my problem!!!"
