Short term tape based protection
hi,
I am taking short term protection using tape for file server. and retention period is 2 weeks. so it is weekly full backup (which is defined in short term protection)
i can see that after 7 days it is taking new tape for full backup and for incremental backup.
i want to minimize usage of tapes. how can i do that? since a lots of space is wasted on tape.

Hi,
This is by design and no way to change it.
See the following TechNet page:
How DPM Uses Tape Libraries
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757885.aspx
Short-term tape "full and incremental" option
The full backup will require a free tape for each scheduled job, and the incremental backup for all data sources will be appended to a single separate tape.
As tapes fill up, new free tapes will be allocated.
When the next full backup occurs, it will require another free tape, and subsequent incremental backups will be appended to another free tape.

Are long term backups created from short term tape full + incremental?
Does DPM use short term tape, Full + incrementals to create the long term Tape backups?
For example, if i run a short term to tape full with incremental against a computer with a 1 week retention then run a long term recovery point every 1 week for for 4 weeks and 1 recovery point every month for 6 months.
will all the long term RPs actually run a full backup or will they build one from the previous full plus incremental?
My question is two fold,
1. i am concerned about total long term storage
2. I am concerned about time needed to complete the full backup.
Thanks!DPM doesn't support incremental backups to Tape. Tape Backups are always full.

We are a UK South-West based LabVIEW consultancy company looking for a LabVIEW programmer preferably with advanced signal analysis and processing skills, to become part of the team or work as a short term contractor. We will be looking to advance their skills through a range of different projects that we work on, from aerospace test and measurement, through to shop floor data collection and User Interface marketing.
Must have at least two years experience in LabVIEW and have an electronic engineering based degree or be able to show signal analysis is an area of expertise. We are looking to fill the position as soon as possible.
Please your CV’s to the below address.

Hi,
What are the pros and cons of using tape (VTL) for short-term backups in DPM 2012 R2?
The reason this might be an option is that we are using a Virtual Tape Library (EMC DataDomain) which provides great deduplication rates.Hi,
I don't see any real cons except that the virtual tapes cannot be taken offsite, however that VTL does allow for replication to another DD VTL offsite, so that is a good option if $ is not a problem.
As mentioned, it does do dedupe, so if you backup the same data you get incredible dedup savings. Speed and reliability are other pro's for VTL since dirty tape drives are no longer an issue.

Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

How to display a short term lock in a view?
Hello,
I discovered recently the two checkin/checkout modes in sharepoint.
The long term ckeckout that the user choose explicitly to have and the short term check out when the user open an office document for modification.
This article describe the differences between the two modes: http://blogs.technet.com/harikumh/archive/2008/05/28/check-out-feature-of-sharepoint-2007.aspx
The short term checkout is perfect for my client needs. He doesn't want to checkout a document every time he opens it + a lot of user doesn't understand why to check-in a document when they have done their works.
Here is my problem: I would like to display the short term lock in my document library the same way the long term lock information is displayed.
By code I'm able to see who has acquired the lock and if it is a short term or long term lock:
SPFile.SPCheckOutStatus
The column "CheckedOutBy" in by document library does not display anything for the short term lock. The document icon is not change to display a lock on it.
So I'm searching for an idea, how to be able to display this information in my view?
Best Regards,
PyHi,
Theoretically you can do the following:
Create a custom web service based on the object model to get the value of vti_sourcecontrollockexpires metadata of a file remotely.
Create a custom field that display the information in edit and display view based on the of vti_sourcecontrollockexpires metadata using the object model in a label. Create a RenderPattern for the list view that contains a JavaScript block that calls your custom web service to display the short lock information.
I suggest you to read these basic articles that describe the process of custom field type creation:
Create custom field types for SharePoint
http://www.sharepointblogs.com/nicksevens/archive/2007/08/31/create-custom-field-types-for-sharepoint.aspx

And an advanced one about Web Service - JavaScript - RenderPattern integration:
Using AJAX Jquery-like in the CAML of Custom Field Types
http://www.silver-it.com/node/34
And about custom web services:
Walkthrough: Creating a Custom Web Service
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms464040.aspx

Hope that helps. Sounds to be not easy, but technologically possible.

Short term Production/Inventory Changes feed to S&OP
Hi all,
We all understand that S&OP is long term planning with monthly cycle and results of S&OP will feed to my short term planning /detail scheduling.
The issue that I am having is, how we can get the short term production/manufacturing changes feedback S&OP. Should we allow S&OP Supply Plan keep changing it based on changes to Production/Manufacturing ?
Within our S&OP process we start to plan supply planning on 20th of this month for next month onwards plan. But my Inventory/production might change for current month after 20th as well and that will affect my plan for next month. Should I allow that changes to get into S&OP and allow my supply situation changes accordingly?
Any thoughts based on what we had seen at other customer/industry?
Parag.Hi,
Hope you know the rules of the forum too many questions in single thread is not permitted.
kindly break them to get proper reply. -
When I attempt to Modify one particular protection group, the console crashes with this:
This only happens to this particular Protection group that backs up to long term Tape protection. I have tried the work around found in this article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2905631 , but had no success.Hi,
It sounds like you have a DPMDB inconsistency that is not possible to troubleshoot in a forum setting. Either restore the DPMDB from before the problem occurred and run dpmsync -sync or open a support case so it can be diagnosed and corrected.

Good Morning,
I am in fast paced environment with multi tasking.
Last year, I joined, grouped, nested tables in TOAD.
Now, I have challenges for similar project need to nested query.
Any idea or recall my short term memory.
Thanks,
S!GMy guess based on your responses thus far, no one knows what you are really asking. You should be as specific as possible.
If you are asking questions on how to efficiently write queries or the like you would get a better response if you posted the actual query text.
As always it is always helpful to provide the following:
1. Oracle version (SELECT * FROM V$VERSION)
2. Sample data in the form of CREATE / INSERT statements.
3. Expected output
4. Explanation of expected output (A.K.A. "business logic")
5. Use \ tags for #2 and #3. See FAQ (Link on top right side) for details. -
I have a short term contract requirement to carry out modifications to existing Windows and CVI production test programmes for RF products. We are located in North East Hampshire with an immediate start.
Hope you are doing well! We are the UKs highest LabVIEW certified NI Alliance Partner. We have a RF developer expertise in CVI based in London. You can contact us at http://www.austinconsultants.co.uk/ContactUs.html and have a look at some of our projects there as well. We would certainly be interested in learning more about your project and have our London based engineer contact you.

Computer Camp Short-Term Licensing Available?
Hello:
I was curious if Adobe offered a short-term licensing option for summer computer camps? I run a summer computer camp for children and teens 6-weeks out of the summer and we were looking to incorporate Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, and Photoshop into our curriculum. We lease the computers for 6-weeks out of the summer and wipe the hard drive clean upon returning the computers.
Thanks for your help,
MattYou have not mentioned it but based on some of the things that you have said, I would assume that the Mac's are bound to a domain. So, for one of these Mac's, if you logged on locally and then created a print queue to the network printer, do you get the same message?

I'm in the market for a new camcorder and have just purchased a copy of FCE HD3.5, as a first time purchase of any Final Cut product I didn't go for FCE4 first off as I have a miniDV camcorder at present.
In starting to look around the www I was surprised to find that Sony have phased out some (if not all!?) of their tape based HDV cameras; what are people's thoughts on this?
I don't particularly want to go to a memory stick or HDD type camcorder as I don't really think this method of storage has been proved long term (harddrive versus catagorised tape backup) so therefore prefer the idea of tape, but, at the same time this will be a one off purchase for quite some time and I don't want to feel left behind in a few years time.
LukeHi
I know we have to have Progress. But for me, if I can lose, every so often the details in my address book. I know that at sometime I will lose an important video file.
I have just done a big Wedding video with two HD DV cameras. Edited over nearly two weeks to the satisfaction of the Bride. Burnt the DVD's and have all the original tapes and the edited back to tape. All stored in a sealed plastic container. From experience with tape over many years. I know this will be able to be viewed for many years,
It may be difficult these days to play a wax cylinder. But vinyl can still be played and very well. Cd's might be more convenient, but there is still a better fuller sound on the vinyl
So to progress to storing on a hard drive, will not be a reliable storage over a long time. Nor is the storing onto normal dvd's the answer as many that I have done over the years, have been reported back to me that they shudder, usually near the end of the video
Still I did not think that it would be possible to make a digital camera. be so reliable and generally do a better job than I used to do with film. So perhaps and I hope I will be proved wrong, but for now I'll stick with tape. Thanks. Dave -
Make sure you set real short-term goal.
Elevate GF Make sure you set real short-term goals. Doing too much too fast will only result in harm. After finding your baseline strength, attempt to modestly improve every routine. Don't be surprised if you occasionally blow past short-term goals. This can help build motivation and lead you to never missing a workout. You should eat one hour before and one hour after a workout. A snack that is high in protein and low in sugars or fats will keep your body properly fueled. Later on, you can get more serious by measuring out protein and planning a more specific meal plan.

Okay, 2006 model, which came out Aug 2006-7.
Heat. Good idea to run SmcFanControl 2.x to run default rpm 800-900 instead of too slow 500-600. Heat really harms those extra hot FBDIMM RAM chips.
You need to boot from another hard drive to repair your boot drive.
I would not go with DU and trust its verify. Alsoft Disk Warrior.
You probably have a dying OEM Nvidia 7300GT or ATI X1900 that clogs itself with dust (poor air chamber design) and has to be pulled and cleaned 3-4x a year. There is even a recall-exchange program for some of the ATI X1900s, based on card serial number.
Upgrades almost never do fix problems with hardware except once in awhile where graphic card drivers can always use some help.
At the least, to repair your drive, boot from SL DVD and "Utility Menu => Disk Utility" until you have OS X installed on a small 30GB "emergency Mac" volume (from which to run DU but also Disk Warrior).
I am not a fan of upgrading the OS to a new version. Format a new drive, and even actually new drives can ship with bad sectors. Think they don't? it would cost much more and longer to test even 1TB drive. And format a drive with Disk Utility from the new OS with Disk Utility, not older version.
I would do a +clean install+ of 10.6 to another hard drive and fully update that and test things out. Then, clone/backup that with SuperDuper (safety net) and install software (10.6 upgrade editions that are compatible only).
You may have something left in your system or installed that is corrupt, not compatible. Even a bad USB cable or device.
Then import (Migrate) or hand copy your home account from backup (data is usually fine, thinking of /account/Library/ items.
Creating a new user account can also be helpful to test a system, but first do a clean install so you know you are only using Apple OS. -
Backup system aimed at short term small local backups
I was wondered if there are any backup systems aimed at short term backups for usually small changes. A few times in the past I've done boneheaded things to a single or just a few files and OS X's Time Machine has been amazingly helpful here.
If I go Google'ing for backup solutions what i find are solutions aimed at locking large amounts data in cold storage at a remote location for all eternity in case of a hardware failure or a datacenter burning down. Those systems obviously have their place and I do use one (or well, I'm working on learning to use it effectively) but what I'd also like is something that addresses problems that exist between the chair and the keyboard. Is there a good way to have a sort of "undo button" for the last few second to an hour? I'd be plenty happy to trade hard disk access speed for this ability.
As an example, Vim's recent persistent undo feature is something that I've found incredibly useful (although I do worry that I'm starting to rely on it as a crude version control system).
Is there some class of software aimed at this issue? (Or should I just stop making mistakes?khouli wrote:Did you try any other solutions besides attic? Thoughts on them?
I've used lots. rdiff-backup and rsnapshot used to be good - they're mostly the same, just one pulls backup to a central server (rsnapshot) while the other runs on each client and pushes to your backup location (rdiff-backup). Each has it's place. Back-in-time -- eh, I'm not a fan of GUI backups. Duplicity was too complicated for backups (personal preference, I don't need 90% of what it is capable of). Dar doesn't really seem to provide much over tarballs. Obnam was quite good, but I ended up with attic which seemed 'cleaner'. Bacula is wayyyy too complicated. I'm rather fond of urBackup for certain environments, particularly ones with Windows laptops.
khouli wrote:...bup can't prune old backups.
Being git based, that makes sense.
This is the one thing I keep showing people about attic that is damn impressive. I'm backing up a Synology NAS (over CIFS) using attic. The data is our design department. Here are the stats for our last backup:
Original size Compressed size Deduplicated size
This archive: 598.21 GB 400.34 GB 909.63 kB
All archives: 13.07 TB 8.75 TB 206.71 GB
13 terabytes of backups (currently going back to Feburary) in ~200gb on disk after it's been deduplicated and compressed. And yes, we have successfully restored multiple times (design people seem prone to "accidentally" deleting their own work :-/)
