Short-term wireless internet

Is there really a short-term use of wireless internet that one can buy, like on a card or something? I have been told there is, and I don't know where to look. I am visiting my father in the mid-west, and while there are wifi hotspots 20 or more blocks away, I do not want to have to go visit a coffee house. All I need is a resource to continue looking further and some definite knowledge of a provider who has this service. I appreciate it.

g2,
It shouldn't cause problems for him. It might not even be strictly necessary to shut his computer down; just power off the modem, swap the ethernet to your computer, then re-power the modem. To put things back the way they were, just reverse the process.
Of course, it might be prudent to double-check that his PC gets back online.
Verizon may be offering one month of "wireless" internet, but how? "Wireless Internet" could mean one of several things: DSL from Verizon, with a wireless router included in the mix, one month of access at WiFi hotspots provided by Verizon (like at Starbucks), one month of data access via your cellular phone (provided you also have a compatible phone and plan), etc., etc.
"Airport" is just the 802.11x wireless networking protocol, and it only peripherally has anything to do with the internet (it allows you to join a wireless network that is in turn connected to the internet via some means; DSL, cable, T-1, etc.). It is just one way of gaining a connection to the internet. Ethernet is another, and a cellular phone (provided the phone supports it) can provide an internet connection via USB or Bluetooth, by acting as a modem.

  • How can I get my wired LAN to share my iMac's wireless internet connection

Hi. (sorry for the long-winded posting below. I really struggled to explain what I'm trying to do, but would really appreciate any help from people who can recognise what I'm aiming for!)
I've seen several postings about sharing internet connection, but none (I think) which sort my problem.
I have a wired LAN with 3 Macs connected to a router, and the router to a cable modem and the internet. All working fine. All Macs have internet access.
I'm considering ditching my broadband provider, and so looking for a replacement configuration, at least for the short term.
So, I'd like to change the arrangement, connecting one of the Macs to the internet (through a local free WIFI hotspot) using it's airport card (that bit is done) and enable the other two Macs to share that connection via the router.
I've turned internet sharing on, and share connection from Built-In ethernet, on the internet connected Mac. But whatever
Has anyone got this setup working?

You can share a connection through the router or you can share a connection from the Mac via Internet Sharing, but you can't share an already shared connection.

  • Just bought a 13" mac book air.  When streaming vidoes from amazon it stops every 10 minutes or so to download --I have high speed wireless internet.  video streams fine on my older pc.

I just bought a 13" Mac air.  Streaming videos from amazon.com stop to load every ten minutes.  my wireless internet is fast and a good connection.  same video runs fine on my older dell pc.

Entering the URL of an HD version of the movie into the URL line in Safari changes things but does not resolve the problem. Now I see the QuickTime "Q" after about 5 seconds, and shortly after that the QT logo fades and a large question mark appears over it. After that, nothing.

  • Which Wireless internet???

Hello im Hunter and i just purchased a iBook G4 for Christmas and i am NEW mac. (but loving it) and i was wondering what wireless internet thing i should get. i currently have Verizon Online DSL but want to take my computer to the kitchen etc. what would work best for me? Airports extreme? etc very happy with any input
SRRY if i didnt use the right terms or whatever

We have a standard ADSL modem connection which hooks directly into Airport Express. This way we can also run our eMac on wireless broadband as well as sharing the printer. The benefit of buying Airport Express is that you can run mulitple computers of it. Further to this, it is often cheaper than buying a wireless ADSL modem (at least in Australia). If you only have the one computer though, it may be simply easier just to buy a wireless home ADSL pack. The comment about the digital cordless phone interference is also worth considering.

  • Short Term Air Cards

I vacation in an RV and would like to have internet access as I travel. Does anyone if there is a short term air card available? I don't need one year round .
    Thanks,
    deester
    I

modem/card ...different terms for the same thing. Whether you get a USB verison or a PCcard version it's still a modem. The PCcard version would be specific to your make/model of computer..so you'd need to make sure you have the correct form factor. The USB version is universal..so any computer with a USB port will be able to connect to the device.

  • Connecting wireless blu ray with my wireless internet

I'm exited to get Panasonic wi-fi built in blu ray dvd player, I'd like to use it mainly for Netflix, Pandora and maybe Youtube videos. I wasn't able to connect to internet. I'm stuck half way, Panasonic tech support gave me 3 port codes and suggested that verizon need to transfer them but when I connect verizon to have them transfer those codes they ask for a whopping $40 bucks, I prefer not to be charged for services they should provide without nickle and dime...long story short is there a solution to this before I return the blueray dvd player. P.S. the dvd player comes with wireless adapter and my wireless internet router supports the WEP authentication and it's Westell Versa Link Model 32700. Hope to get a solution, thanks

If you visit this page, you can download the firmware for your Westell: http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/HighSpeed/Troubleshooting/Network/FirmwareUpgrade/123451.ht...
Be sure to check the sticker at the bottom of your Westell *BEFORE* you install the firmware as you may otherwise render the router unusable. Once you've downloaded the correct firmware file, visit http://192.168.1.1/ and log in using one of the following Usernames and Passwords:
    admin/password
    admin/password1
    admin/admin
    admin/admin1
    Your Verizon Username and Password
    admin/Modem Serial Number
From there, choose Advanced, click Yes past the Prompt, click Firmware Upgrade and then click on the box prompting you to upload a firmware file from your PC. Choose the downloaded file and press Upgrade. Give it a few minutes and Do not reboot the Westell! It will reboot itself and come back online if the upgrade was successful.

  • For those who constantly lose their wireless internet connection using WRT54G

Ok I was constantly losing my wireless internet connection on my LAN network when using my laptop, I tried everything to no avail, until today. Heres what I did to solve my problem
    1. Upgrade your firmware for the WRT54G to ver.6
    2. Reset your wireless router
    3. Unplug all cables and wires from your Pc and router
    4. Connect your Pc directly to your cable modem and obtain an internet connection
    5. Now transfer files you want to keep from your laptop onto a usb flash drive or burn them to a disk
    6. Reformat your laptop so that it goes back to all factory settings just like when you bought it
    7. When completely done reformatting run software that came with the WRT54G on your desktop pc and follow all instructions, when prompted to type password type the password you last used
    8. Go to your laptop and it should pickup a LAN,click connect, it will ask for the encryption key so type it in(whatever you typed when re-installing your wireless router)
Congratulations you are now back up and running, install files saved earlier back on your laptop and enjoy. This is what I did and it solved my problem as a matter of fact i typed this from my laptop and has not dropped my wireless internet connection yet.
NOTE SAVE ANY AND ALL FILES YOU WANT TO KEEP AS REFORMATTING WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE DATA!
IAM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ERRORS OR PROBLEMS THIS PROCEDURE COULD CAUSE IF DONE INCORRECTLY!

If you bought a version 5 or 6 return it to where you bought and apply the money towards a WRT54GL v1.x  You'll be much happier.  You could spend time online rather than pulling your hair out trying to figure out whats wrong.  I setup 6 Linux based WRT54G's with no issues before I was given the task of setting up a version 6.  Worked for about an hour.  Told the guy to return it for a GL.  Long story short, set it up in a matter of minutes and he was online.  That was 3 weeks ago and he is very happy.

  • IPod Touch: apps (facebook, twitter, facetime) don't work properly with my wireless internet having worked perfectly before. Help needed!

I got my iPod Touch 4g for Christmas 2011 and for the first 2 weeks everything worked fine - I could download apps; use apps to their full potential; use FaceTime; use everything.
But after the two weeks, the iPod decided to no longer work as well as it had promised. First of all, it would take more than 2 hours to download a single app from the app store and then, straight after that, I couldn't connect to FaceTime (it had worked perfectly before). Then, finally, to top it all off - Facebook and Twitter stopped working on occasions. For example, I couldn't post/send messages or photos on Twitter and at the majority of the time, the News Feeds wouldn't load.
Sometimes everything works but most of the time it doesn't. I've tried my iPod at every time of the day and it makes no difference - nothing still works! Also, I don't think it is the fault of my wireless internet because I've had an iPod touch before and it worked perfectly, and the laptop that I am writing this question on also works perfectly with wifi.
The weird thing is that I have used my iPod to its full potential (everything worked fine) at my friends hosue on multiple occasions - using his wifi. I am really lost for ideas for what to do - I have uninstalled all the apps that don't work with the internet (facebook, twitter) and have always made sure that I have closed apps after using them, so that my iPod wouldn't run slow.
My iPod has been like this for over a month now, help would be appreciated

Do you have a blackberry data plan active. On your account? You need an active blackberry data plan to use the majority of data functions on your phone, even if you are connected to wifi

  • HELP ME UNDERSTAND WIRELESS INTERNET PLEASE!!!

IM looking into purchasing a laptop but do not have internet currently, IM totally confused on how works. Can I get wireless internet without a phone jack? Some people have also told me that a satellite laptop would be best but I would need a wireless router to connect do you have to have a service provider or can I surf the web right away? PLEASE help me!

Lets not Confuse Toshiba Sattlelite with wireless capabilties, its just a brand name and does not imply functionality in a specfic way.
There are legal ways to get free wireless internet, one i just mentioned which is the library. If you use your wireless card and find other locations over the airwaves, and they are unsecured, you could essentially hop onto them but its very illegal and there are ways of catching people stealing wireless access from other users.
If you are in the market for High Speed internet such as Comcast, or Verizon, you can go here:

And check out the special offers that they have for signing up in store at Best Buy
Geek Squad does offer network setup help, and those prices vary from store to store.

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

  • Wireless Internet Access (Cisco IP NGN or Cisco Wireless Mesh Networkin)??

    Dear Cisco Wireless Team
Please educate us on where to start, or the CISCO product we might need to purchase
We are trying to branch out a new Internet wireless access and wireless phone service business in our company, and presently looking for the right Cisco product solution to purchase to enable us offer this service in LAGOS, NIGERIA.
The service will be rendered in Africa, the country NIGERIA, and the city LAGOS.
We would like to mount or install the product in Lagos, Nigeria.
As we are new to this kind of service. We would appreciate if the Cisco wireless team can work with us in pointing or directing on the right product to purchase and what are required. We understand the Cisco Wireless Mesh Networking Solution, Cisco IP Generation Network, Cisco 12416 or 7600 Series Router might be the right products to purchase, but we are not sure on what needed or what are required to meet our service need.
Possibly we would like to offer Wireless Internet Access to unlimited subscribers, and also Wireless or Mobile Phone service to unlimited subscribers in Nigeria.
    Anticipating your reply

I suppose Cisco Wireless Mesh Networking would be a good choice. The Cisco mesh architecture makes it easy to scale coverage as capacity needs dictate, including increasing access point density; adding wired connections, controllers, and radios; and using dual high-powered, high-sensitive radios and a selection of high-gain antennas.Refer the document for IP NGN in the following URL http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns537/networking_solutions_solution_category.html

  • Wireless Internet access via requires unplugging cable modem -

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and Airport Express (7.4.2). I have high speed Internet via Comcast/cable modem. I spent 30 minutes with the Apple Tech Support folks and was finally able to get wireless internet access. However, after I shutdown and reboot, the only way I can wireless internet is to unplug the internet cable from both the wall plug and cable modem and unplug the modem, both for about two minutes. This isnt what I had in mind when I crossed over from the dark side (PC laptop world) and am having buyer's remorse. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem (i dont want to unplug cables before each session on the internet)?

    Mr. Timmons,
Thank you so much for the response.  I thought the complete reboot would work, but apparently not.  I followed the directions precisely, even waiting a few minutes longer than suggested for each of the steps.  My air express is still blinking yellow.  I think the issue has something to do with the DHCP and the IP address which are diifferent. The IP address is one series of number (starts with 169), and the LAN IP address is another number (starts with 10). Status on airport express show yellow for internet connection, and yellow for no DSN servers. When I go to the internet tab of airport utility, it shows the iPv4 address starts wutg the 169 number. When I click on the network tab, the DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  When I open the Network Options window, the iPv4 DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  I am at a loss as to how to get them to match up (with either the 169 number or the 10 number).  V/R sjbgtmo

  • MBP problem connecting to wireless internet

I recently tried to get online using my Macbook Pro (Intel) and I was prompted for the password to access the wireless internet network which was unusual as it normally connected automatically every time. Once I had entered the correct password I was met with the pop up window "'There was an error connecting to the network 'Vlsise'" (Vlsise is the name of our home network). I think that this may have been due to recently downloading some updates the day before but I can't be sure.
I have an iMac (Intel) and PlayStation 3 which connect fine to the internet wirelessly but I've not gotten around to downloading the latest updates for the iMac in fear of it encountering the same problem as my MBP.
My laptop can connect via the ethernet cable but when I try to connect wirelessly I briefly see the IP Address 169.254.109.180 in the network settings window before the error message appears, if that is of any use.
The router I'm using is a 'Zyxel 660HW-T3' and has been great for the year that I've had it. It may also be worth pointing out that our provider 'Telefonica O2' upgraded our service last month but as the MBP is the only Mac that has a problem I can't really see this being related.
If anyone has a solution to my problem or any tips to try rectify the problem they would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

So I took my MBP to work to try their WPA2 password protected network and it connected no problem! I'm absolutely stumped on this one I think my last resort will be to re-install OSX and see if that works. If someone else has already tried this and it didn't work then please inform me so that I can save myself the hassle.

  • HS-1200 breaks Wireless Internet access

FYI, I just installed and started using the HS-1200 yesterday and they are awesome. An unfortunate side effect is that it breaks the wireless internet in my house. Wireless routers and the headset both operate at 2.4GHZ and they don't play well together. I thought it may have been my Belkin N1 Vision router so I went out and bought a Linksys WRT310N and it does the same thing. The remote computer have trouble connecting and when they do they get around 1mbps. Turn off the headset and poof, back to 36-54mbps. I have open tickets now with all 3 parties involved so hopefully there is a fix, otherwise the $106 headphones have to go in the closet and that would really p_ss me off.
I can't believe that this problem didn't present itself anywhere in their testing and QA process.

Im having the same issue also SabreHawke. I use my HS-1200, with my desktop replacement laptop, and off and on, the wifi light indicator turns off then on. Never had this issue before. Been using wireless channel 2 for about 3 years now, w/ great connection. Not sure what channel the headset uses. I cant use the default channels, i think 6, 9, 11, cause once someone turns on the microwave it disconnects. Guess i'll try some others, but channel 2 has been the best. Other than this i love the headset, :-).
    Edit: Did speakeasy speed test.
Normal (w/ headset off): Download ~10mbps w/ speedboost up to 16. Upload ~2mbps.
Headset On: Download ~1.5mbps. Upload ~1.0mbps.
