Short turntime on i7 iMac

Ordered new iMac i7 on Feb 27, and received
it on Mar 1st. Thought that was amazing timing.
Plan to have Apple store transfer data, etc.
I am one of those that has been waiting until some
of the issues have been resolved on this model.
Hoping all will go well. Thought I would share.

I was pleasantly surprised as well!
I ordered mine in the afternoon on the 26th and it was here on March 1st. Migration assistant worked well with transferring everything from my 24". I'm just wondering if anything has to be tweaked with it. I thought I had read somewhere that there are certain settings to change to make the machine fully optimized as far as speed is concerned. Maybe I was seeing things. Seems fast enough right now!

  • Short Report on Intel iMac Performance

Ok so I finally had some time to push the iMac around. I'm please to say I was not able to peak the CPUs to 100% before the Disk I/O gave up, seems I need a faster drive before a faster processor right now.
One thing of note is that under the Intel dual core version I see 2 CPUs and I see both being used and both are used differently at different times.
How many tracks and how many plugins?
51 Tracks, turned on all the plugins for the tracks for a total of 111 total plugins (including the space designers I added to see how far it will go before failing)
How many space designers did I add above and beyond what was already there before I peaked the CPU?
17 Space designers before the Disk I/O gives up, could not peak processor before Disk I/O gave up.
I have a screenshot of LP playing the busiest part of the song with CPUs not pegging in case anyone is interested. This was taken just before I got the Disk I/O error, in fact I'm wondering if taking the screenshot didn't push it past the limit.
Does this answer what everyone needs to know about the iMac CoreDuo running a 2Ghz processor with 2gigs of RAM and buffers set to 512 (which is the default when I installed), and enough to now compare it to what ever you want?

Well you shouldn't have a disk error
unless you were recording Audio at the same time whilst putting the effects on
because the effects has nothing to do with how fast the disk is,
also unless you were using alot of EXS24 or other plug-ings that loads big samples all from the OSX drive then maybe
even then you need lots of EXS24 and like stylus RMX with like BFD to get disk error
did you try it again to see if you'll get disk error again at the same %% of the CPU as the last time?
and tell us what instruments you used so that other can try as well
    example:
    channels 1-5 EXS24 with """ samples and 50 Spacedesign
channels 6-10 Ultrabeat with "" samles and what ever effects
that way we can try it on our PPC or other intels as well
I got G5 dual 2.5 with 4GB of rams and i'm also going to compare with what you do
to make it easier lets try and use logic's own plug-in so everyone can test using their system as well
thanks for the report and testing B.O.T.N

  • Spinning Ball and a nonresponse iMac

A short while ago my iMac suffered some problems where the hard drive wouldn't be mounted and even if it was when I started from the cd, repairing it didn't seem to help for long because the system would freeze and I'd be back to restarting from the cd. Disk Warrior fixed the problem, apparently, but now I have a new one. Before I used Disk Warrior I did format the disk and install Mac OS X again. I also have Boot Camp installed.
A spinning colorful beach ball sometimes appears and I hear a clicking noise from the upper right area of the monitor when you're looking at it from the back. The clicking noise has a pattern and it repeats it while the ball is spinning.
I can move the cursor around but can't interact with anything. Usually I can click on an application in the background to make it active but a few seconds after the ball appears I can't even do that. The keyboard commands don't work either.
Today the clock still worked and the monitor dimmed as usual and then, after a few minutes, the computer started responding again but only for a few seconds and then the ball came back. This time though, the clock stopped working.
I forced the computer down twice this morning when this happened and both times it restarted with no problems and the hard drive didn't dismount but I am worried about causing long term problems.
In addition, I am thinking that the real cause of these problems is not the crashes I experienced playing Heroes of Might and Magic V (great game but very buggy) or the problems Disk Warrior found and repaired but the hard drive failing physically. While Disk Warrior said the hard drive was fine physically there could be problems it couldn't find.
Sorry for being so long-winded but I wanted to give as much information as possible to try and figure out why the beach ball appears and why that clicking noise happens and if I should bring it to an Apple store to get it checked out.

Check your S.M.A.R.T status in Disk Utility. To do this, open Disk Utility and click on the hard disk itself, not one of the partitions. The S.M.A.R.T status is displayed near the bottom of the window. It should say "verified". Reply back with the status. If the disk is really bad, you may need to boot with your OS cd/dvd and use Disk Utility from there.

  • Old Topic, looking for newer answers....iMac (Late 08 model) shuts off

Hi all, I've posted this topic before but became really busy and was unable to troubleshoot this problem to the fullest. Long and short is that my iMac decides to shut off on it's own. I've ran the hardware test months ago with the code saying that the temperature control was messed up. I've since taken my iMac to an Apple service center where they have changed the display and the power source and I'm still having problems. I've surpassed the Apple warranty and was dumb enough to not get the AppleCare for this system.
A little more details, temperatures of core components (the ones that iStat Pro would show) seem to be normal. Nothing is over 120 F yet my CPU fan is spinning at nearly 4k rpm. For whatever reason, when this fan kicks in, the computer likes to shut off, even if temps aren't that high. Has anyone else experienced this? I know I'm going to either have get a new computer or face the bill for repair, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, I've tried running the Hardware test before posting this and the dang test won't launch. I'm losing too much hair people, please help!

Ok, figured out the hardware code, it is: 4SNS/1/40000000: TpOP-131.000. Any takers?

  • IBook G3 as host computer will not mount iMac as target w/firewire

Okay, this problem is complicated and involves two computers. It started with an iMac DV SE running OS X (Panther) and OS9 and sort of grew. In short, my son's iMac DV SE typically runs on OS9 Classic because most of the kids' software we own is old. I recently changed the start up disk to OSX in the control panels in order to install some new software. The iMac would not reboot and got hung up at the gray apple and progress indicator. I tried unplugging the peripherals, rebooting from the CD, resetting the PRAM and attempted to restart with the options key depressed. I couldn't even get it to Safeboot. Nothing worked until I put the iMac in target mode with my iBook G3 as the host. I was able to mount the disk and change the start up disk back to OS9. I thought I had corrected the problem, but when I changed the startup disk back to OSX the same problem recurred. Now I can't even get the iMac to mount on the iBook's desktop in target mode. I wish I could add other details about the iMac hardware, but it's old and I rarely work on it -- the HD space, RAM, speed, etc. eludes me at the moment, but I did a clean install about a year ago and added little. I am sure there was adequate HD space and lots of RAM.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get myself out of this mess? Thanks in advance for any help. Tracey
iBook G3, dual USB, 600Mhz   Mac OS X (10.3)   iMac DV SE graphite, OS X 10.3

Hi Rhonda. Thanks for your reply.
    1) I used Disc 1 of the installer CDs for Panther. The computer starts up, but I get the gray apple with the spinning wheel and it hangs there.
    2) Safe Mode: Same gray apple ad spinning wheel.
    3) Startup Manager: I get a purple screen with the hard drive icon with OSX in the center, a restart arrow on the left, and a proceed arrow on the right. Nothing happens when I hit the restart arrow, I cannot change the OSX startup icon and when I press the proceed arrow, I get the gray apple and spinning wheel.
    4) The iMac DV SE ran in Panther for about 6 - 8 months without switching to OS9.
    5) I think -- but am not positive -- that there is at least 128 MB, possibly as much as 512MB.
    6) I've never used Norton's DD -- I've been warned (thanks to this forum) to keep it far away from computers running OSX. I usually use Disk Warrior.
    7) I haven't tried the original OS install CD which came wih the iMac. I'll try that this morning.
Also: 1) I did a fsck i single-user mode and that told me that there where no problems.
    2) The slot CD/DVD drive has been broken for some time (it met an untimely end thanks to my toddler). We use an Iomega peripheral CD/DVD
    drive instead.

  • I'd like to import my windows word bibliography in imac word. How can I do that?

I have made an extensive bibliography in Windows Word 2011. Shortly I got an IMac. I would like to import this bibliography in Imac Word. How can I do that. I tried to get an answer in google, bur noone seems to know how to do that. Please help me.

Once you buy Office:Mac, you do not need to import. Files created with Office:Windows can be opened by Office:Mac without conversion or importing, as long as the version are not too disparate:
    Office/Win 97 = Office/Mac 98
    Offiice/Win 2003 = Office/Mac 2004
    Offiice/Win 2007 = Office/Mac 2008
    Offiice/Win 2010 = Office/Mac 2011
Ther is usually a one-year offest between teh Win and Mac version identifiers
The free productivity suite LibreOffice works on Mac OSX and will open most WinOffice files:

    A rather nice program

  • Am I better leaving my music on the imac drive or putting on thunderbolt external drive?

My current set-up is that I have a 6 year old imac.   I also have an external hard drive where I moved all of my itunes content (about 400gb of movies, music, etc.) and I also moved our iphoto files to this external hard drive.  This drive is connected by ethernet in our house and it feeds the apple TV that is in another room (wifi connected).
I just ordered the new imac retina (has yet to arrive) and I upgraded to the 1TB flash drive.  I also ordered a thunderbolt external drive.  My question is this...I believe a Flash drive is fast.  I believe a Thunderbolt drive is fast.  For accessing the content especially for Apple TV, is it actually better to leave the content on the imac going forward rather than a hard drive?
I had the external drive to free up hard drive space and to make it easier to move to a new mac when the time came.   I had also hoped to find a way for apple tv to access the content even when the imac was turned off but I haven't been able to make that happen.
So, just asking here about leaving content on the new imac when it comes versus moving the data over to the thunderbolt drive.
Being that the apple tv will still be accessing content via wifi in the house, I wonder if I will see any speed improvements in streaming with the combo of a faster mac, faster thunderbolt, etc.
Hopefully upgrading to the flash drive was a smart decision in general.
    Thanks.

Streaming will be faster from the new iMac.  However it is still a good idea to keep the bulk of your material, 400 GB is a lot of content, on external drives.  That serves to protect the material if an internal drive fails, and also keeps the internal drive from getting too loaded down.  You can increase speed by simply moving content you want to use in the short term to the iMac SSD where it will be at its fastest speed, and then take it off when no longer needed there.
That gives the speed and security for your material.

  • Unfriendly iMac

A short while ago my iMac stopped welcoming me with the usual "Mac tune" upon start-up. All other functions, sound included, are normal.
It doesn't seem to be a serious problem, but how can it be fixed?

    Hi
Reset the Parameter RAM - pronounced PEE-RAM. To do this restart your iMac and hold down these four keys command, alt, p, r. You have to depress them at the same time. Keep the keys depressed and your iMac should do a slight pause/blink. The boot chime should now be back. Let go of the keys and let the iMac boot normally.
The command key is the key with the half-eaten apple on it. The alt key is the key immediately to the left of it assuming the space bar is your starting point. The alt key is not the ctrl key.

  • Should I Plug the iMac (Late 2009 i7) Directly to the AVR or AVR- Supressor -iMac

Hi. I have an Omni AVR 1000w with delay switch, built-in fan when it overheats, input and output indicators, servo motor, will turn off if it's overloaded, circuit breaker and fuse. It's the best AVR I can get (no blackouts here at the meantime and APC is expensive). I also have a good Belkin surge supressor which has 8 outlets. The iMac late 2009 i7 can be plugged at the back without any adapter.
Should I plug the iMac (which has a huge 3 prong plug) directly to the AVR to give it better, more quality current coz' it's a shorter distance to the iMac or should I plug the surge supressor to the AVR then plug the iMac to the surge supressor which has a cord length of around 2.3m or about 7 to 8 feet? Which one will give a more quality current for the iMac. Will the AVR with all it's features protect it from lighting even if it's not connected to the surge suppressor? The belkin has two external drives and two desktop electric fans and a battery charger plugged-in usually. Will connecting it to the supressor give less quality current coz' electricity has to trable farther?
    Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. No UPS here yet (no budget the 500w one is too expensive). I only have an AVR and the surge supressor. Is the AVR (I think it's called line conditioner/line regulator in other countries) a surge supressor also?

  • Never owned a Mac, thinking of buying a Mac Pro, could use some advice...

    Hey guys,
I know this was a lot to read, but I sincerely hope someone will take the time to answer my questions:
As the title of my post implies I've never owned a Mac in my life. I've always built my own desktops and usually gone to HP or Dell for my laptops. I'm approaching that time again where my custom-built desktop is looking outdated and I'm getting the upgrade itch. I'm looking at all the parts I need to order to build a computer and I can't help but think I'm older now with a full-time job and a one year old daughter in the house. Do I really want to go through the hassle of building a desktop from scratch again? Not really. So I started evaluating things a bit. As I get older I’m really just getting sick and tired of Microsoft’s antics (Vista was a huge disappointment for me) so I decided this could be the year for me to take the Mac plunge.
Now I’m an IT guy, so I have a pretty atypical setup at home. I’m currently running both Windows and Linux on all my computers. Rather than dual boot or use virtualization software I have a pretty intricate system in which I use a product called Acronis Trueimage to experiment with operating systems. What I do is perform a a clean install on an operating system, tweak it as needed for security and to use resources on my LAN than back up the customized OS install to a server a an image file. I have pre-built images for XP, Vista, Ubuntu and OpenSuSE that I can roll out to one of my machines in an average of 15 minutes whenever I get the urge to switch operating systems. I also serve all my data off a NAS box, so since data and OS are kept separate on the network I don’t have to worry about erasing something when I swap between Linux and Windows (as loading an image literally destroys the previous OS install).
So you can see I’m pretty highly specialized. I even have things down to the point to where I have custom images for specific purposes. For instance I have one XP image customized for development, one XP image customized for gaming, etc. Naturally if I got the Mac Pro I’d like to have the freedom to create a similar set of custom OS deployment images (Windows, Linux and OSX) for it as well. In researching the Mac Pro I have some concerns my current system might not work if I go that route. Am I correct in assuming that in order to run an alternative operating system on a Mac I’ll have to run boot camp or something like it? Or upon unboxing my Mac and tweaking Leopard will I be able to use disk imaging software to make a backup image of my preinstalled Leopard hard drive and then do a clean install of Windows XP or Ubuntu and set it up to function like a PC? I guess I’m asking if it’s possible (now that Macs are Intel-based) to run Windows or Linux exclusively on the Mac hardware?
Also I have some concerns about the proprietary nature of the Mac platform. From what I can gather in my research it seems the hardware is pretty locked in. One area that has me really concerned is gaming. I pretty much use Ubuntu exclusively at home for productivity and web surfing. However I still like to load that XP image every now and then to play some games on the LAN with my buddies. I’m not a fan of virtualizing for gaming because of the obvious performance hit you take, so I’d have to be able to run Windows XP free and clear. Also I checked Nvidia’s site and I see no OSX drivers listed there for their cards. Under the Windows platform they are always releasing driver updates to squeeze more game performance out of your card. What if I want to upgrade my video card? How do drivers work on OSX? Does Apple just integrate drivers for just a few specific video cards into the OS? Will I be stuck only able to pick from a handful of video cards approved by Apple?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice!

    Hi Zeus
I may be able to answer some of your questions. And sorry in advance if this sounds like yet another of those "religious conversion" stories
I'm a software developer/architect, mostly doing Microsoft .NET/C#/Web Services coding. I'd been a loyal Microsoft guy since I started on the original IBM PC back in the 80's. Like a lot of people (or so it seems) I just got fed up with Microsoft's high-handed and self-important ways. More importantly, the company always seemed to be lagging behind technically. Looking at beta versions of Vista did not bode well for the future - it just seemed awful. When Vista came out it it was the last straw - I just could not get enthusiastic about this bloated, slow, mess of an operating system. I really hated it. Still do. Even with a top-spec machine, Vista didn't run in the snappy, responsive way it I thought it should. Nothing seemed well thought out.. yuck!
Then, by chance, I was staying for a few days with somebody who had a Mac. Now, for years and years I not even considered Macs as remotely serious machines. My only experience of them was in the late 80's when somebody at work had one. He took delight in pushing a floppy disc into the machine so that it would respond "Ah, it's so big!". Great, just a toy. Not for serious programming work. So, encountering Mac OS X Tiger on my friend's iMac was something of a shock. It was so responsive, clean and elegant. When you turned it on it only took about 30 seconds or so for the thing to be ready for use, etc, etc.
Long story short, I bought an iMac, then a newer, bigger, faster iMac, then a MacBook Pro and now I have a Mac Pro. I still have to work with Windows to do my .NET-related day job. But 95% of the time I work on the Mac using various VMWare virtual machines. I can switch between Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP in a few seconds and still be working in a Mac environment. And the performance of running Windows inside VMWare is even better than on my dedicated top-spec Windows laptop! I have a selection of virtual machines to choose from and, because these virtual machines are just files, I can back them up, revert to saved copies, etc. I've tried Bootcamp but it's much less convenient and performance inside the virtual machines is never an issue (although I don't do any gaming). So, you could keep virtual machines on your NAS box or local Mac hard drive.
With regard to graphics drives, etc. I've never had any problems whatever in this respect. For example, when I installed Windows XP on VMWare it automatically recognised all my hardware (including some obscure audio interfaces, USB-based MIDI interfaces, etc.) and made it available. I must admit that when I was new to the Mac I expected to have driver issues, but never have had... So, my guess is that you'll be able to run all your Windows and Linux distros on the Mac without too many problems.
You mention Apple's hardware as being "locked-in". I don't think that's the case. Certainly the consumer Mac models like the iMac can't be upgraded (by you or me) internally, expect for memory. The Mac Pro though is very easy to upgrade - though there may be some limitations with regard graphics cards.
Re your questions about graphics card drivers. Yes, these come with OS X in just the same as as with Windows. Because I've also used the card that comes "with the box" this has not been an issue for me. However, unless you get a Mac Pro you can't swap-in your existing graphics card. And even then I think you may find restrictions. However, other, more knowledgeable Mac users on this forum may have other thoughts.
Overall though, the experience of using the Mac in terms of software is very much the reverse of Windows - the OS is very open and well documented. It really is an IT person's dream machine - so much to fiddle around with (particularly if you know anything about Unix!). Unlike Microsoft who charge a FORTUNE for their development tools, Apple give them to you for free. And very good they are too!
Finally, one bit of advice. If you are considering buying a new Mac, join the Apple Developer Connection scheme as a Select member. It'll cost you around $400 to join but they give you a hardware discount for Apple-store purchased items that will save you a ton of $$$'s - absolutely definitely worth doing.
Hope this helps (and good luck)!
    Russ

  • Computer shuts down and starts up by itself. I have 27" mid-2011 model. Has been like this for 2 years now. The hard drive and the mother board has been replaced already. No help, the problem still returns.

    This morning it started again.
When I write the word "shut" to console it says:
    kernel[0] Previous shutdown cause: 0
locationd[55] locationd was started after an unclean shutdown
    kernel[0] Previous shutdown cause: -128
locationd[55] locationd was started after an unclean shutdown
locationd[54] locationd was started after an unclean shutdown
    kernel[0] Previous shutdown cause: 3
Yosemite is installed. But the problem has happened with every operating systems.
Disk utility can't find any problems.
No usb or other devices are connected.
I deleted the file: com.apple.PowerManagement.plist (someone suggested that it may help)
I think it's not the matter of heat, because the problem occurs right away when starting my comp.
With a safe mode it sometimes stays up for hours. So could it be a problem with applications, rather than hardware?
    Help is highly appreciated!
    Thank you!

Thank you, I did ran etrecheck.
    Here's the result.
Now my computer did shuts down even in safe mode, sometimes in seconds.
So I have to keep this short.

  • PC WON'T SHOW UP IN FINDER ANYMORE

I have a PC running Windows Vista Home Edition sharing several folders. I used to be able to see this computer in my Finder window on my Mac. I can see and access my Mac from my PC, but I can no longer see and access my PC from my Mac. I am running OSX version 10.5.8. I recently upgraded to that version, and it seems like ever since I upgraded, I can't see my PC in Finder anymore.
Does anyone have a simple fix for this problem to get my PC to show up in Finder once again?

I'm having the same problem, different twist. I just upgraded to snow leopard on my IMac, and set up file sharing with my Macbook. My IMac shows up fine on my MacBook, but the MacBook will only show up for a short while on my IMac, then it disappears. I can get it back if I set it up on the MacBook again, but only for a while, and then my IMac finder will show not only the MacBook being shared, but also some other non-existent computer, but again, only for a while, then they both disappear. My MacBook has leopard, not snow leopard, but I can't see why that would matter. Any solution? This kind of thing can drive you crazy - and I don't even really need file sharing, but I still want everything to work! Thanks for anyone who can help. Linda

  • Can I undo an errant import of photos from an external hard drive?, Can I undo an errant import of photos from an external hard drive?

I'm desperate.  I recently purchased a new iMac to store our 50,000 plus photos, many large files from our DSLR camera.  I previously stored them on a Maxtor hard drive linked to a very early MacBook Pro, purchased in Jan. 2006.  Photo organization and storage was a persistent headache on that machine, so I hoped that housing the photos locally would help.  It didn't.  I imported the entire external hard drive library after creating a new local library to house them on the iMac and they are completly disorganized.  Prior unedited photos have reemerged.  Chronology is lost.  I basically have 50K photos and no organization at all.  Short of returning the iMac is there a way out of this mess?

Hard to say since you really give no details
It sounds like you may have had an iPhoto library on your external drive and imported that into your new iPhoto  --  NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work
If this is what you did drag the bad iPhoto library to the desktop until you finish fixing things, connect the external drive and drag the iphoto library to the pictures folder of the new Mac and launch iPhoto - it will convert the library as needed and you will be in business - once you are sure everything is ok drag the bac library on the desktop to the trash and empty the trash

  • Airport Express/Apple TV Support?

    Hey,
Have been searching through the forums but unable to locate any information around support for Apple TV With Aiport Express
In short, I have an iMac, MBPro, iPad, iPhone 4 and Apple TV. Just moved in to a new flat and looking at how to get a multi room audio set up going on.
If I get the airport plugs, I can jack speakers in to these thats clear, but can I stream audio from apple tv or better yet just my tv so I can get a surround sound set up in addition to the wireless music playback?
    Thanks

    Gwames

  • SD Card in CD Port

I have put an SD card into my CD Port.  Is there any remedy short of sending the iMac into Apple?  I can't reach it with a small probe.

Have a look at this short video - looks easy with a bit of card:
