Shortcut for spaces on laptop?

I try invane to open spaces to work with it. The prefs say F8, but I tried all the F keys, and nothing happens.
Is there a special combination for laptops?
Any insight would be appreciated

Found in another thread that I needed to put spaces in my dock. Now I can click on it in the dock... And it works fine now!

  • Shortcuts for Spaces keeps revert to default settings without cause

    I have a Powerbook G4 that's running Leopard 10.5.8. It has plenty of free space on the hard drive (approx 35%).
    Whenever I start up my Powerbook or wake it from sleeping, the shortcut keys to switch between Spaces are no longer selected. It retains the designation I gave for which Space each application is assigned to, but the shortcut keys are for some reason reverted to where nothing is selected. Any suggestions??? This is VERY annoying.
    Thanks so much for all your help

    delete the file home directory/library/preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist and log out/in. then set spaces shortcuts again and see if they stick from now on.

  • Keyboard shortcut for Spaces?

    I'm pretty new to mac, and loves space on my macbook. But I've run into a problem...when I'm out and about I use spaces all the time, but when I get home I have external monitor that I use as a secondary display. I normally disable spaces when I get home, because I don't want create spaces like I was without a second monitor. Currently I'm going into spaces and just disabling it, but is there a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to disable spaces without having to go into system preferences?
    Thanks in advance.

    there is no built in tool for this. but if you REALLY want to do this you can make a service that toggles spaces on/off using automator and applescript. you can then assign a keyboard shortcut to run ot. or you can make two separate services one for turning spaces on and another to turn them off and make separate shortcuts to them. I can supply the details but do you actually want to go through all that? I would recommend using spaces at home too. I find them quite convenient with two monitors as well as with one.

  • Keyboard becomes unresponsive after using keyboard shortcut for Spaces?

    Hi, I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.2 and have the most annoying bug! I always use spaces, and sometimes after using the keyboard shortcut to a space, my keyboard becomes completely unresponsive and I have to log out and log back in again!! Any known fixes? It's happening on my Macbook and Mac Mini!
    Thanks

    Check this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2161076&start=0&tstart=0) for the exact issue. Seems widespread.

  • Add a keyboard shortcut for spaces

    I would like to add a keyboard shortcut that enables me to switch my current active window to adjacent spaces (right, down, etc). Is there any way to do this?

    Im sorry, I must have poorly phrased my question. I would like to switch my current active window (ie the browser that I am typing from currently) from space one (my current space) to space 2 (to the right) using only keyboard shortcuts.
    I know that I can click on the top of this window and use the shortcuts that you have provided to move it. However, I would like to move the window with only the keyboard.

  • CTRL+ number shortcuts don't work for spaces 5,6,7,8,9

    For some reason I can't switch into spaces 5,6,7,8,9 (I have 9 spaces) using CTRL+# shortcuts.
    However, I can make these shortcuts work if I switch into space 1,2,3 or 4 first.
    To switch into space 9 I have to do CTRL+1 followed by CTRL+9. Has anyone found a way around this behavior?

    It did not, but when I checked Spaces Preferences, it turned out there were no shortcuts set for space switching. So it shouldn't have worked for CTRL+1 in a first place. Setting shortcut to CTRL+# makes it work

    How do I set the shortcut to space bar for the hand tool in illustrator cc?

    Thanks Larry, Mavericks OS. I managed to fix it by quitting Illustrator and reopening it. I have no idea why there was a problem in the first place, it just stopped working with the space bar shortcut and replaced it with a random alphabet.

  • How can I set up a custom keyboard shortcut for volume control?

    Hi all,
    I use my black MacBook at work, connected to an external monitor and external keyboard. I'm looking for a way to set up the F buttons on my external keyboard as volume control, just as they do on my laptop keyboard. Looking for F3 to F5 to be volume mute, down, and up, respectively.
    I tried going into Keyboard Shortcuts in System Preferences but since there is no menu item for volume control I can't seem to add it. Anyone know how I can go about doing this or what I'm missing?
    Thanks

    paste the following into Applescrpt Editor (it's in /Applications/Utilities)
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume</pre>
    this script will increase volume by 5 (out of 100) any time you run it. you can adjust this of course. save the script somewhere.
    You can use a 3rd part app launcher to bind a keyboard shortcut to it. I use Butler. there are many others: Quicksilver, ikeys, quickeys, Spark, Launchbar.
    this will work the fastest.
    If you don't want to use 3rd party tools for this you can make a service using automator but that might be a bit slower than the first option. open automator. it will give you a pulldown screen wiuth the choice of what you want to make. choose "service". set it to receive no input and be available in all applications. add the following "run apple script" action to the service
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    on run {input, parameters}
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume
    end run</pre>
    save the service, go to keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts->services and make a shortcut for the service you just created.

  • In the market for a new laptop..

    Hi everyone,
    i am currently in the market for a new laptop and seeking some advice.
    I am debating between getting a basic rMBR 15' 2.4 GhZ 8/256 model and MBR 2.3 GhZ 4/500. The price for the basic rMBR 15' 2.4 GhZ 8/256 model is 1,867 euros with Apple's friends and family discount i am getting (stock price is 2250 euros here in Ireland). MBR 15' 2.3 GhZ 4/500 starts at 1850 euros and i am not getting friends and family discount off that (don't want to go into details). In any case this isn’t the sort of cash I have lying around.
    Apple’s rMBP is a wonder of modern engineering, there is no doubt about that. What i am concerned about is all the software that has to update to add higher res images which takes time and a lot more space because they are effectively doubling the size of the image and my general browsing experience where buttons, logos and anything affected by Photoshop’s “Save for the Web” setting will look blurry or pixelated. This is certainly not the kind of experience I am looking forward to after spending 2k on a laptop.
    I'm not a heavy user also I like to take my stuff around with me and I do a little Pro Tools and Logic once in a while.
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    What you were told is not correct. Apple doesn't care where your music originated and nothing will be "blocked", but you can only sync your iPhone to one device at a time.
    When you first connect your iPhone to a different Mac or PC, you will see a dialog similar to the following (substitute iPhone for iPad - the result is the same):
    It will do exactly what it says. If you "Erase and Sync" the iPhone will be erased first. So, make sure whatever music you have on the iPhone is stored someplace else first. Transfer that music to your new Mac's iTunes Library, and then sync your iPhone to it. You will lose nothing that way.

  • I can't set shortcut for „Application windows"

    System Preferences → Exposé & Spaces → Exposé
    I can’t set shortcut for „Application windows” — first column with Fn key is OK, but the second column with mouse button doesn’t work. If I set „secondary mouse button” for „application windows”, it doesn’t work. But if I set „secondary mouse button” to „All windows”, it works! All mouse shortcuts for „All windows” or „Show desktop” work, but no mouse shortcut for „Application windows” work . The same with „Mouse button 3” and other buttons.
    Can you help me, please?

    Do you see the iTunes Library icon in the window? Click on it and the use the scroll bar to get to the tracks you want.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
    Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Best shortcuts for Expose etc.

    In quite un-Apple-like fashion, the shortcuts for Expose/Dashboard that comes as default on Leopard simply does not work because you end up adjusting the volume or brightness instead. I've tried combinations of function keys + option/cmd etc. but that doesn't work either. What do you guys recommend?

    Hi,
    Expose is a feature provided by the Mac OS X and you can use it for applications which are running on Mac. If you are trying to use this feature with the shortcuts like F8,F9 etc. then try the combination with the 'Fn'+F8 keys. This again depends on the hardware you use. Otherwise if you do not want to use the key combinations then try the following.
    1. Open System preferences
    2. Go to Key board and mouse preferences
    3. Under Keyboard tab disable Use F1,F2 etc as standard function keys.
    This will help you to get the normal functionalities without pressing the Fn key.
    Also you can enable Expose with the mouse from the Expose and Spaces preferences in the System preferences. Under Expose tab you can chose options like "All Windows", "Application Windows" etc. for any of the four corners where the mouse moves.
    Hope this helps you..... Good Luck

  • Keyboard shortcut for creating new Desktop

    Switching from primarily using keyboard shortcut navigation on a PC, I've realized that the OS X is missing a keyboard shortcut for creating a new Desktop or Space. You need to use the mouse to do this, either by clicking the Add Desktop icon in the upper right corner of Mission Control, dragging and dropping an open window to the Add Desktop icon, or entering full screen mode. Though it is possible to toggle full screen mode using a keyboard shortcut under Systems Preferences, not all applications can enable full screen.
    Does anyone have a possible solution to this problem?

    Hi- There is no longer a dedicated key on your keyboard to do that. However, follow these steps to make one...
    Click on System Preferences, Keyboard, and then choose Keyboard Shortcuts tab. In the lefthand column, select Expose & Spaces On the right, you will see that Expose has several shortcut key options. Make sure that the checkbox for Desktop is filled in, and double click it, and press the keyboard key you would like to activate it. If I may suggest, F5 or F6 are good choices.
    That is it! You are good to go.

  • Keyboard shortcut for context menu

    Hello all. I recently got a MacBook and it's the first Mac I've ever had. I'm a keyboard shortcut guy when I can be and one thing that's stumped me is using the keyboard to open up the context menu.
    Does anybody know a keyboard shortcut for opening the context menu (ie Ctrl + mouse Click)?
    If there isn't one, I would be happy to add a custom keyboard shortcut for it in the System Preferences. I've tried to do so but I'm doing something wrong because it isn't working. Here's what I've tried specifically:
    1. For "All Applications" add Ctrl+Space for the Menu Title "Show Context Menu"
    2. For "All Applications" add Ctrl+Space for the Menu Title "Open Context Menu"
    Does anybody know the exact Menu Title for the context menu?
    Help is much appreciated!

    The Keyboard Shortcuts are for menu items, not macro creation. What you want to do requires a third-party utility for programming keyboard macros such as iKey, QuickSilver, etc. You'll find these at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
