Shortcut to Audio Prefs

I've been trying to figure out a quick and easy way to change my audio preferences from time to time. I use an audio capture device to connect my Mac to some speakers, and most of the time I want this to be set as my output device. But if I need to move my computer (which being a laptop, I do, several times a day), then it's annoying to have to go into system prefs, into audio prefs then switch the input source every single time, especially if (for example) I'm receiving a Skype call and need to switch rapidly to my headphones.
Does anyone know how I might shorten this procedure? Ideally I would like a single key to do the switching, but I understand I might have to live with a shortcut that opens audio preferences for me. I tried the 'create global shortcut' thing, but I can't seem to get it working. Do I need automator or something?

I found a freeware called Sound Source that works great. It puts a menu bar icon that lets you switch outputs and inputs.

  • Where are Core Audio prefs

    Hi
I'm just wondering where core audio preferences are, as I doing an upgrade and have backed up my library and users, but cannot see where core audio prefs are ?

What do you mean by "Core Audio Preferences"..?
Are you talking about Logic preferences, or OSX audio related stuff? (largely dealt with by the Audio MIDI Setup Utility..) This stuff is all over the place - it depends what audio, MIDI drivers you have installed, whether you've setup aggregate devices and so on...

  • No Audio Pref in /Library/Preferences/Audio

    Hello
I have no sound in iChat and can not change the settings in Sound Pref Pane. I read the tips about deleting the files in /Library/Preferences/Audio
My problem is, they don't get built anew.
    Any idea?

I have the same issue, my system sounds don't work!
Solutions that I see in the threads and don't work:
    1. Check the System Preferences > Sounds > Play user interface sound effects;
    2. My volume in "Alert Volume" was in the high level possible;
    3. I Delete the /Library/Preferences audio relative files and restart SEVERAL TIMES;
    4. PRAM 4 times and nothing;
    5. Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner and nothing.
    6. Seems that nothing work
The another sounds, like youtube playback and iTunes, QuickTime are all work normally, but the system sounds not.
I try everything! I even reinstall the 10.6.4 update combo with no sucess, please someone help me! All the system sounds: empty trash, move documents, remove application from dock... all that system sounds don't work, only the volume up volume down thing.

  • CS3 standardizing keyboard shortcuts and other prefs ??

Hello. I have 30+ computers that are running Indesign CS3. Instead of going around to each one and setting all keyboard shortcuts and things like default stroke weight and also prefs. like, Edit > Preferences > Advanced Type and the Small cap setting as well as others. I would like them all to start with my sites default prefs.
Where are these prefs stored. I know the keyboard shortcuts are in the Indesign Shortcut Sets folder, where are all the Edit > Preferences things stored?
If I set one to the way I want it and than copy these files to all computers will this fix my problem?
What are the files, how should I accomplish this?
    thanks

Preferences for CS3 are saved in two files in the user profile. The first is InDesign Defaults, under \Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 5.0 and the second is InDesign Saved Data under \Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 5.0\Caches (these are the XP locations. paths are slightly different for Vista) These are hidden files.
The documentation says that it is not recommended to copy these files from one machine to another, and that it is recommended that you script it instead, but I've only found one user who's been able to do that, and since the script was written for a major client he hasn't been willing or able to share it with the world. I've been copying and pasting these files onto multiple machines at my school for years without any trouble, but, if there are differences in configuration from machine to machine you could cause some instabilities. Set a restore point and try it.
Unless you have a system freeze program in place, however, this is largely an exercise in futility. Preferences, as noted, are user-specific and changeable, and get written each time the application closes. The best you'll get is a common starting point.

  • How to create a new independent audio track?

okay, probably a stupid question, but how can i create a new audio track that is not a "slave" to an already existing audio track. for example, all of my 8 audio tracks are in use, so when i try to open a new one, it is affected by the highlighted tracks specifications, making it very frustrating. please help and thanks.

Some things are just backward in Logic...we just have to get use too it.....
jord, I agree.. it's not that hard to understand the difference between an arrange track and an audio object. the fact that you can have many tracks in the arrangement that all use the same audio object or midi object is a great thing.
I think if people get their head around the fact that the arrange page _is not_ simply a representation of what is physically available in terms of tracks, then it all becomes clear.
I would recommend all new users to do the following:
click on your arrange window, and select the top track. start hitting delete until you have deleted every single track in the arrangement. you now have a blank page. but, importantly, the environment of available audio tracks/audio instruments/midi channels/whatever has not changed one single bit. you can now assign anything to your arrange page. 55 arrange tracks that are all using audio instrument 1 if you so desire. or, sequentially create new tracks that are all using subsequent channels/instruments by controlshiftreturn (by default).
people often get confused by doing the following: they create a new track in the arrangement - say they had audio instrument 1 and then created another _arrange track_ of audio instrument 1. then, they look in the parameter box for that second arrange track, and change it to audio instrument 2. then they get annoyed that for some reason, both tracks now change to audio instrument 2.. but this is totally normal, because you have changed the assigment of the same audio object, that just happened to be present in the arrangement in the form of 2 arrange tracks. the way to change what object is assigned to an arrange track is to click-hold on the track name (right there where the track is in the arrange list) and then you will see a pop up of all of the available objects, hierarchically presented to represent the environment layers in your song. or, instead of doing this, you can just create an arrange track that uses the next available audio track/instrument by using the key command described above (controlshiftreturn).
it's not at all illogical or backwards! when I am writing a midi part using an audio instrument, I (very) often want multiple arrange tracks of the same instrument so I can test out different ideas or variations.. muting all except the one I currently want to hear. and importantly, they aren't "copies" or "clones" of the same track, nor are they "linked" tracks that change assignment together, as many people seem to think. they are independant arrange tracks that just happen to have the same track or instrument assigned to them. once you get this, you start getting logic.
the way to build new audio objects or midi objects (which is what people mean when they say "new track") is and has always been in the environment. although, now there are shortcuts to do it by using the function 'create multiple tracks' which will produce the objects for you in the arrangement and add them to your arrangement in one operation. you also need to be aware of the setting in your audio prefs (or in hardware and drivers, can't remember which) where you define the maximum number of tracks that the audio engine will allow, this being another stalling point for many new users.
like I said, once you 'get' this architecture in your head, you start realising how powerful and flexible working on arrangements in logic will be. for me, it's a way better implementation than playlists in protools, for example.

  • Logic Pro 9 - Recorded audio just silly with crackling, clicking noise

PLEASE!!! Read my entire post before commenting. I don't mean to sound rude but I've posted this in several other forums and it's obvious they hadn't read/understood my issue based on the comments they left, ie., suggesting everything I've already tried, saying to contact tech support and even asking what comp and DAW I'm using... I've been dealing with this issue for ~8 months
    SPECS
    I use 2 daisy-chained Firepods connected to a Mac Pro Quad-core running 10.6.5 and Logic Pro 9.1.3.
I get the results described below whether I'm trying to record at 24 or 16 bit and at either 44.1K or 48K.
Generally I record 12 tracks simultaneously AND I always use the same inputs for each instrument; ie., Vocals = track 11, guitar = track 2, bass = track 1, etc...*
    PROBLEM
Although this is a sporadic issue it happens to occur WAY more than it doesn't; ie., very rarely do I get a recording session without the anomaly.
The issue is that after I have recorded a session and listen back to the recorded material there are random crackles, pops, clicks throughout. When I audition tracks individually, some may have no crackling and some will have crackling at different points in time and of varying intensity. Every session is different as well, no two sessions are the same. One day I may have a perfect vocal track and a guitar track that is just silly with the crackling. The next day the guitar track may be fine but now the vocal track is all messed up with crackling. Another confounding point is that the crackling does not occur during periods of silence.
I will add that each Firepod appears to function properly (with no issue) all by it's lonesome - but that doesn't help me, I need 12 inputs minimum!
    Things I've Tried
    1. All new FW cables
    2. Disconnecting the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Turn on the Mac. Turn on both Firepods, master first. Connect the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Launch Logic.
    3. Disconnecting the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac. Turn on the Mac. Launch Logic. Turn on both Firepods, master first. Connect the FW cable that goes from the Firepod to the Mac.
    4. Tried every conceivable configuration of Audio Midi Setup.
    5. Tried several other FW and USB audio interfaces, obtaining perfect results.
    6. Been working with Apple tech support (both hardware and Logic support).
    7. I've checked that both Firepods have the same firmware version.
    8. Installed a fresh SATA HD with clean installs of both OS10.6.5 and Logic Pro 9.1.3 with fresh custom templates and no 3rd party plugins or loops.
    9. Lots of praying, swearing and fits of anger.
    Final Comments
First, I think that the chassis FW connectors on the firepods are absolute garbage (read, cheap, cheap, cheap) and are inferior to anything else I have encountered during my troubleshooting process.
Last, I will go ballistic if I hear one more Presonus rep say anything to the effect of, "Huh! Never heard of anyone else experiencing the symptoms you're describing..." Yes, I have spoken adnauseum with Presonus tech support with zero results.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pancenter! I'll try to be brief. LOL
I had 4 perfect multi-track sessions and then the gremlin woke up and and cast his spell... Frustrating... The biggest difference I enjoyed using your suggestion was that when I launched Logic, loaded my template, enabled my tracks and hit record, the session started without a hitch. Prior to your suggestion, I would have to futz around with Logic audio prefs, AMS settings, turning the Firepods off/on, quitting/restarting Logic and/or shutting down/restarting my Mac Pro just to get the session to show my enabled tracks had activity. I would not know if the session would have the noise artifacts until playback. I should add that I never had this problem with my PPC G5 nor did I for the first 10 months of use with this Mac Pro. Also, with the help of Apple tech support we had eliminated Logic, 10.6.5 and the Mac Pro (except the FW800 bus) as probable causes. Again each Firepod and Logic work flawlessly when I use one unit not daisy-chained. So, I think there is no problem with the individual units, and, as I said, both units worked fine chained with my PPC Mac Pro.
So, I called Presonus. Again... And I get yet another tech who tells me something different; every time I speak with Presonus I get different suggestions. This guy asked what kind of cable I was using to connect the Firepods to the Mac Pro and I said I'm using a *firewire 9-pin to 6-pin cable*. So has asks well, is it *bilingual*? He said that would def fix my problem. I told him it is advertized as bilingual and that had not fixed the problem; he had no answer for that. Then, I broached the option of adding a firewire 400 card to my Mac Pro. He said I guess you could try that; get one with a TI chipset. That's where I'm at now, deciding which one to get and whether I will need to provide auxiliary power to the card's on-board molex plug.
    Any ideas?
    Oh, thanks for responding

  • Shortcuts for Batch and Image Processor in Bridge CS6

I use Batch and Image Processor all the time, and I'd like to use a shortcut.
Can you tell me if there is a shortcut or how I can program one?
I set up shortcuts for those two commands in Photoshop, but they don't work in Bridge.
I remember from the time I started with Photoshop and had Deke McClelland's book with his set of shortcuts. There was a shortcut that worked with image processor, but it was just a set you did install and no explanation. When I moved to a different computer and a newer version of Photoshop, these keys got lost.
Is there any way to automate Batch and Image Processor?

There is no way to economically batch process in Bridge without having to go thorough sub-menus.
I'm sorry you can't get it to work, but on my system it works flawless.
Testing a bit more it seems you don't need to use a unique shortcut at all. I also tried to use the shortcut for Batch I created in PS itself to get the Batch window to front for running actions on open files. For me that is [control + Cmd + B] but feel free to find an other one.
When I discovered you don't need the unique shortcut at all I used the same shortcut for Bridge CC. . Also created [Control + Cmd + i] for the Image processor.
    Both started without problems.
To extend I also created both same shortcuts for Bridge CS6. This also was working correctly, off course, having only PS CC open using the shortcut in Bridge CS6 it auto started PS CS6.
So can you specify a bit more about what OS you are using on what computer (I have OSX 10.8.4 on a MacPro 2012)
Some screenshots to show the shortcuts in System prefs and how the show in the Bridge Submenus:

  • Video Output ALWAYS dictates Audio Out!!??

I have a Black Magic card in my system. To save space on my working monitor, I'm viewing my movie from the output of my Black Magic card on an external monitor. However, the audio is also being sent to this monitor. I'd like to do my mix with my headphones, and not on the crappy monitor speakers, but every time I change the video output, the audio always gets sent to the monitor. I have to watch the video in a window on my monitor to be able to listen over headphones, which is a waste of space. Why can't I control this?
In my audio prefs, audio output is set to built-in output.

Weird, I have both setup, Windows 7 with Lenovo Graphic Driver and Windows Server 2008 R2 with Nvidia Driver, both have audio output.
Try to go to Device Manager to see if there's anything called Nvidia High Definition Audio, for me, I have 4 same devices. If there are unknown devices, install it manually with inf files.
    Best Regards

  • Qosmio G30: SPDIF option unavailable in Audio Properties

Qosmio G30, SigmaTel HD Audio Codec, running XP 2
I'm attempting to route the audio signal thru the built in coaxial out to amp. No signal. When I go to Sounds and Audio Devices>Advanced>Volume control panel /Properties there is no slider /column for spdif, in the list of things to show in the advanced panel nor any way to turn it on. Likewise in SigmaTel's panel there is no option to route thru spdif.
Furthermore, Advanced Controls is greyed out in the Volume control panel.
What have I missed? I can't for the life of me figure out why there is no signal nor any way to turn on spdif in this machine.
Also, in Media control Devices Properties box there is this list:
    (MCI) CD Audio
    (MCI) Microsoft Video for Windows
    (MCI) Midi Sequencer
    (MCI) Sound
    mciqtz32.dll
All of which say they are functioning normally. Any ideas why I can't seem to find the spdif option?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes. Thanx Jeffrey. I understand the cable and output issues. A simple coax w/ a 1/8" adapter on the end going into headphone/digi jack will suffice.
    But again, the problem is:
I cannot access an option within Audio prefs which would allow me to turn spdif on. I do not see a place using dxdiag where I can see that information.
So, can anyone imagine a scenario where spdif is no longer avail in Audio prefs? I went into windvd and there are options to passthru spdif, but clicking them did nothing in windows.
    All help appreciated.

  • Quad G5 Audio In doesn't work

Neither the external iSight nor analog mic input doesn't work. Both devices work fine on the laptop. No way of telling if the optical input works. Removed audio pref and there was a brief indication (input LED was stuck at some levels, not the usual dead silence), Re-installed OS, nothing... Changed iSight's FW ports to the rear, front and thru the hub. Nothing.
Due to the input failure, iChat fails to initiate on video/audio chat.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    chris
    Quad 2.5, PB G4 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   6.5GB, Cinema Display, CRT

Hmmm maybe some kind of audio card/software your using is not ready for the Quad yet?
Hate to say it but before calling Apple do a clone, Disk utility Erase w/zero option and a fresh install of Tiger>update, Fresh apps, no migration assistant. files from the clone.
    http://homepage.mac.com/hogfish
Then you can at least rule out a software problem and get right to having Apple fix the hardware issue.
Did you option boot from the install disk and run AHT extended tests yet?
btw, this "Apple Discussions" server response is very very slow...
Sometimes it's their servers or the 'net, check both machines, if it's just the Quad either it's a slow 250/500 GB boot drive filled up or a OS problem.
If the OS reinstall doesn't speed things up (on broadband right?) you might want to look at getting a fast boot drive and keeping it slim, read my performance info at my site.
Western Digital is coming out with a 150 GB 10,000 RPM Raptor X which would make a sweet boot drive.
(no comp for product mention, just performance interest)

  • Peak Audio Files

Having real problems with peak audio generation.  Lots of projects that I open or re-open that where created in any version of Premiere CC (including 2014) have the wave form missing.  I have tried clearing the media cache to force Premiere to re-generate the peak files but with no luck.  I would rather not use render and replace as a solution to this is there an easy way to get premiere to regenerate the peak audio files manually? or at the very least an easy way delete any cache files on my system in order for prem to automatically regenerate the peak audio files?  Without a wave for it is making it very difficult to edit the audio in my projects
In terms of the system I am running if that helps shed any light on the issue its a new 12 core MacPro and this is a clean install of Premiere Pro CC 2014 without any previous versions lurking around on the system.  All my projects are stored on a SAN but the media cache is pointed to the local machine rather than set to store stuff with each project.

    There are Preferences for this.
Check the Audio prefs panel and the Media panel.
You can turn on/off PEK file generation and enable these to be stored in a specific location.
Using a SAN, I would adjust the Media prefs to store cahce files alongside the media.

  • Correct Audio Midi Settings?

I am using an external microphone (an ATR USB mic) to broadcast over Internet radio.  I am not sure all my settings are correct.  Here is the Audio Device window within Audio Midi:
What is M under channel?  Should the Thru box be checked on that line, and unchecked on the others?  What does Thru mean?
    Thanks.

It does state in step 2:
    "Connect your receiver
The audio connection must be a digital connection. In all cases that I know of, this means an optical cable from your mac to the receiver."
That is what led me to believe HDMI-only might not have been adequate.
He was basically trying to make it clear that a digital audio connection is necessary. He wrote the blog entry at a time when the only digital bitstream output from a mac was the optical connection.
Also, is all of this setup/installing Perian/messing with Terminal really necessary if I am NOT using Quicktime to play anything on the Mini? Or simply playing a real DVD?
I believe the DVD Player app uses the same parts of the operating system as quicktime. So, yes, it's still necessary.
Also make sure you go into the prefs for the DVD Player app and set the audio output to the digital output. Optionally, you can also disable the dynamic range compression in here (it's better to use the dynamic range controls in your receiver, if you do want DRC enabled).
Right now I am using Plex or VLC to play media files.
I don't know about Plex, but VLC does not rely on the quicktime infrastructure. However, you do have to go into the audio prefs of VLC and enable the SPDIF function.
What if I want to revert to default Terminal settings? How would I accomplish that?
The commands to disable are listed in the blog entry, immediately after the commands for enabling it.
Don't be afraid. There are no downsides that I'm aware of to doing the steps outlined on that page.

  • IChat Video/audio preferences hangs up

    heLLo,
Recently, whenever I wanna change the preferences of the video or audio (let's say change the bandwidth or output) this windo hangs up for about a good minute, which rather longer than expected!!! Why??
I only have conference recorder & iGlasses installed on it, and I don't think it did anything to it, as I've uninstalled them already to test: no success.
I've tried to trash the pref files, but nothing. I might have to reinstall it with pacifist.
    Thanx

    Chris,
thanx, but I've done all that already.
But it seems I might have found what the problem could be:
I use a D-Link Bluetooth USB , and I think for some reasons, if I wanna go in the system Pref in Bluetooth, it just hangs up. Same if I wanna connect Address Book with bluetooth, hangs up. So I disconnect the D-Link Bluetooth USB , and replug it, and works fine for a while until it happens again. When the bluetooth is workin, the video/audio pref in iChat are totally OK, no hangs up. (Guess when the iChat pref is looking for the bluetooth output or headset, and if the bluetooth module isn't properly working, then it might cause the hangs up).
Now, why do my D-Link Bluetooth USB is doing that is another question. It simply plugged on USB2 hub (with AC adapter). So I might try to plug it straight at the backof the iMac to test.
I've just trashed the Bluetooth pref (the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist one, are there any other I should trash?)
    Thanx. The Hunt carries on

  • Logic will not playback audio unless movie is visible?

    Hello everyone,
I've scored many movies in Logic and except for running out of horsepower have never had a problem like this...until today.
The problem: Whenever I dont have the movie visible, ALL audio stops!! Its not just this new project, but all past projects as well (all of which use to work fine!). For example, I can play back the movie and its audio tracks visible. But then when I close the movie, the sound will just stop. It will not return until I open the movie again. What this means is I cannot switch to my "matrix only" or my "mixer only" screensets and hear whats going on!! Its very odd!!
I tried "OPTION-click on File -> New" to force Logic to create a fresh default song and I still get the same behavior; all audio will stop when movie is closed and will only play again if I re-opened the movie file.
In December I reinstalled my entire system software, logic, sample libs, etc. in the hopes of making logic more stable. I recently rebuilt my template from scratch with the same hopes. I haven't used logic on a project in about 3 months. I dont understand why I seem to have so many problems, as I've yet to have a problem-free project in all my time using Logic. (sad but true). Any ideas on why this is happening? Has anyone experienced this particular problem?
I'm going to continue troubleshooting this problem (trashing audio prefs, etc.) Will post my findings. Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

ok, I found the problem. I forgot in my new aggregate audio setup, one device only works at 44.1k, while the project is in 48k. Chalk this one up to user error. Logic, will you every forgive me! You know I still love you...right?

  • USB mic/Audio MIDI setup help.

I'm going crazy and have spent two+ hours today trying to resolve what should be a simple issue, especially since I had it working at one time...
I'm looking to set up my USB mic in Logic (MXL USB.007, if it matters). First, in going to my System Prefs > Sound, I can see that it is indeed registering sound. Simple.
So I go to Audio MIDI Setup, as I've seen on the boards. Though the mic automatically shows up as "USB Audio Codec", I'm following the process to create an aggregate device (as shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1215). Since after doing this, it's not working, my newbie Logic 101 question is, then, what is the correct setup I'm looking for? My choices are USB Audio Codec In and Out, and Built-In Input, Output and Microphone (I'm assuming I should use USB Audio Codec In and Built-In Output).
After this I've gone to Logic's Audio Pref's and changed it to the Aggregate Device, but the mic produces no sound and the audio track monitor doesn't move.
I'm completely frustrated and would be very appreciative of some help. Thanks.

Okay, after much hair pulling, it had to do with my Bus setting on the track. (sigh) What do I know...I'm a singer-songwriter, not a producer.
