Shortcut to File Server Using GPO

I would like to be able to push a shortcut out, using GPO to a file server.  The shortcut works individually on a desktop but I can not see how to push it out with GPO.  Basically I want it to go to \\servername and thats it.  I feel like
it should be a file system object but I dont get a shortcut when I use that.  If I do URL i get an icon but it doesn't load in explorer rather the internet browser.  Any help would be appreciated.

If I understand well, you would like to push shortcuts to end users desktops so that they can easily browse your File Servers. If this is the case then you can simply proceed like the following:
Prepare the shortcuts and put them in a share
Use xcopy command and prepare a script that copies the shortcuts from the share to your computers public profile desktop
%public%\desktop
Deploy the script as a startup script
Once deployed and you restart the target computers, your end users (Domain and Non-Domain users) would be able to see the shortcuts coming on their desktops.

  • Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations

I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running  win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
    desktop.
the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
    network cards are intel
i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
    thank you

    Hi,
Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
issue? Please create a shared folder on the file server, then access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstations to check if the issue still exists.
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.

Warning: We do not recommend that you disable SMBv2 or SMBv3. Disable SMBv2 or SMBv3 only as a temporary troubleshooting measure. Do not leave SMBv2 or SMBv3 disabled.

  • How can I search for files on an external file server (using Linux)?

The configuration is that the mac min is connected (with other Windows XP computers) in an ethernet network. The file server is the only one running Linux. The mini mac has no problems to connect to the server and read the files, write files and create folders etc. But, because the file server is quite big, there are a lot of files and folders (size estimate in total some 350 GB). In a finder window I tried to seach a file name, but the mac does not give any result. The mouse cursor does not visibly change into occupied or so. Searching for a file on the mac is no problem as we know.
Any help or hint what kind of program / setting needs to be used to do this would be appreciated.
    thanks

Use the Find command (menu Edit) and in criteria at the right side is a plus sign to add another criteria and set it to your custom wishes.

  • Connect to an isolated file server using windows XP

    Hello guys,
I have a file server that requires inbound connections to use connection security rules for authenticating the connections by computer account.
It's working great on my windows 8 and 7 clients (with the help of firewall with advanced security) but I don't know how to use the connection security rule in windows XP to connect to the server.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

What you are looking for requires that you configure IPsec on your Windows XP box.  IPsec is available as part of the OS with Vista and later.  It was an add-on for XP and 2003 and earlier.  Non-trivial task.  Start searching TechNet
and blog posts to see if you can find the instructions you need to configure XP.

  • Setting up an internet file server using Powermac

With iDisc possibly being dumped with the switch to Cloud, I'm looking at the possibility of turning an PowerMac into some sort of internet file server/iDisc replacement. Now, whilst I'm not clueless I'm not a networtking expert, so if poss I need some help.
What I'd like to do is have the machine at work, connected to my router by wire. The three main work machines (Mac Mini's and iMacs) can access it also by wire, as they're wired into the same router. Then I'd like to be able to access it's files on my iDevices when either connected to the work network wirelessly or out and about via the internet. Also, be able to connect my laptop and home machine to it via the internet.
I don't want to be able to stream anything from the file server, just use it as a file store, for stuff that needs working on at home and work, and when out and about using my iPad or iPhone.
The Powermac runs that last version of OS X that will run on the non intel machines, and the work machines on Snow Leopard. My iDevices are JB's and run 4.3.3 and my Macbook Pro runs Lion.
I have a dynamic IP at work, and only use Macs so don't need to be able to connect Windows machines.
    Help, advice welcome.
    Ta.

Hi Steve, with a Dynamic IP at work, you'll need to a service like DynDNS or no-IP.

  • Problem in Archiving File From FTP Server to XI File Server Using FCC

    Hi,
The scenario is file to IDOc. XI has to read the input file from client FTP server and archive it to XI local file server. Archiving on XI server is working fine without FCC (for xml files). But with FCC, the sender FTP adapter is archiving empty files (0 kb files).
I've checked SXMB_MONI, even there I can see the file data and the IDoc is getting posted with proper data. But, the archived file is empty. Not sure about the problem.
    Please suggest. Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Joe.

    Hi,
File adapter has the functionality which support the empty file handling.
    Handling of Empty Files
Specify how empty files (length 0 bytes) are to be handled.
    ○ Do Not Create Message
No XI messages are created from empty files.
The files are processed according to the selected Processing Mode.
For example, if the processing mode is Delete, empty files are deleted in the source directory.
    ○ Process Empty Files
XI messages are created with an empty main payload.
The files are processed according to the selected Processing Mode.
    ○ Skip Empty Files
No XI messages are created from empty files.
Empty files are skipped and remain in the source directory.

  • Mac mini file server question...

I would like to configure my mac mini G4 as a file server using the current OS X Tiger operation system. Basically I will use another computer as the web server and have the mac mini host the files for it.
Any recommendations or restraints for doing this? Do I have to worry about the Mac Mini going to sleep mode? Can OS X handle this kind of operation?
    Thank you for your help

Yes my Mini is running the latest version of OSX. I also run Windows XP, Vista beta, Linux: PCLinux & Ubuntu on it through Parallels. I have zero problems between Mac & Linux. The only thing I'd recommend is depending what OSes you're working with you might want to partition and set-up a common FAT32 area. I know Linux can't write to NTFS (tho Xandros 4 can) and Windows doesn't like the Mac drive system much. So FAT32 is the common file system all operating systems can read/write to fine. Overall I don't foresee you having any real problems.

  • Integrating existing file server with EP6SP9

    hello everyone
we are implementing EP6 SP9 portal for our SBU and we need to integrate our existing file server with portal in which we can upload documents and download existing documents.
do we need to use content management to access this file server using the file system repository manager or it can be done in some other way
If theres an alternate way to do this, kindly explain what needs to be done.
    Kindly help
    Thanking you
    Anurag

    Anurag,
yes, CM is the software to use for this. you could, in principle, go without CM and code the neccessary stuff on your own. But: The more funcionality you desire (think of: additional properties, search functionality, versioning ...), the more sense using CM makes. Plus you get all required user interfaces (like a repository browser) for free.

  • File Server files?

We are 8 users who share files in our FILE SERVER. Some drag the files to their local hard drive, work on them, then drag them back to the FILE SERVER where the old file is replaced. Others work on files while "IN" the FILE SERVER. To say the least, we've had some doozies happen and we usually don't have time to have I.T. do a restore from the tape.
We don't currently use TIME MACHINE on any workstations. I'm thinking we may need to do so if it can prevent future calamities.
QUESTION: When a user works directly "IN" the FILE SERVER using their own installed application (for example, inDesign), will TIME MACHINE make a backup of it? If so, how do I go about setting up for this?
    Thanks a bunch in advance!

Is your server running +OSX Server?+ If so, Time Machine can back up the server, or any disk connected directly to it. Backups of the clients can be managed from the server. See page 241 here: http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/UserManagementv10.6.pdf
Or, if the Mac you're using like a server is running "normal" Leopard or Snow Leopard, it can back up anything on that Mac, or any drives connected directly to it.
Similarly, Time Machine running on individual users' Macs can back up anything on those Macs, or directly-connected to them; but that's probably not what you want.
You might want to review these:
    What is Time Machine?

and perhaps browse the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • SBS 2008 - Windows 8.1+ clients trouble accessing file server shares

I have now upgraded 1 Windows 8 machine to Windows 8.1, and also clean installed another with Win 8.1 update 1 today, and both machines have trouble accessing the SBS2008 file server shares by UNC. If I browse by IP address of the server it seems to work
flawlessly. The odd thing is that it's sporadic. So if I browse in explorer to "\\*netbiosname*\share" the Win8.1 machine will sometimes be able to access the share, and other times it will fail with a "network unable to reach location etc.."
error. When it does work, it can take up to 5-10 minutes while explorer is frozen before the share is accessed. We're running quite a few Windows 8 machines without a problem, but it seems to be a specific problem with 8.1. Any idea?

This doesn't seem to fix this specific problem. I had a few days of "luck", but now it's back. I just upgraded another co-workers machine to Win8.1 and he advised me that he's been having the same problem even with the above fix applied. His issue
is when opening an office document that's located on the file server using location "\\servername\filename.xlsx", it takes a very long time (minutes) to open the excel file. This was happening to me as well, and if I tried to browse the network during
this period, Windows Explorer would sometimes give me path not found, and unspecified error. I will try and capture a screen of the error when it occurs. Any ideas??
edit: I have also noticed an unresponsive Windows Explorer for a few seconds to a minute over the last few days, which is a pretty good indicator that it's still happening on my machine.
The odd thing is, if I use the IP address of the file server, everything is fine. I changed all of my links to use the IP since October when Win8.1 was released to combat this problem, and only changed them back to the server name for testing since I want
to start deploying Win8.1 to others in the office. Unless I can fix this bug, they'll have to be stuck on Win8.
    Thanks,
    kk

  • OS X Leopard and Windows 2008 file server mount_smbfs

    Hello
I am unable to use the command mount_smbfs to mount a share on a Windows 2008 file server in OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have a Mac Mini running OS X 10.5.8 that is joined to a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain. I also have a stand alone Windows file server running Windows Server 2008.
I want to mount a share on the Windows 2008 file Server using the command line and not Finder. I do have a reason for wanting to do this which I wont bore you with.
On the Mac Mini, I log in with an Domain account that has permission to access the file shares on the Windows 2008 file server. In Terminal I do the following:
    cd /Users/username
    mkdir mountpoint
    mount_smbfs //windows2008server/fileshare /Users/username/mountpoint
This command should mount the share "fileshare" hosted on server "windows2008server" in the folder "mountpoint" on the Mac Mini.
    Here is the problem:
When I execute this command, I get:
Password: so I put in my password
    then I get:
mount_smbfs: mount error: /Users/username/mountpoint: Broken pipe
    Analysis of the problem:
I tried exactly the same commands to mount a share on a Windows 2003 file server. I am not asked for my password and the share mounts perfectly. I also tried the same command in OS X 10.6 to mount a share on a Windows 2008 file server, again, I was not asked for my password and the share mounted perfectly.
So the problem is only mounting Windows 2008 file shares using mount_smbfs in OS X 10.5.8. I am not sure quite what is going wrong here, as the Mac is joined to the domain, it is granted a Kerberos ticket so should not be asking for my password. Is this a known bug in OS X 10.5? Is there a fix/workaround for it?
    Many thanks
    Richard.

Not sure what user the mount command defaults to. You may want to specify your user name in the mount command (you can also specify the password). Try using this:
    mount_smbfs //username@windows2008server/fileshare /User/username/mountpoint
Of course substituting the Windows 2008 account name you are mounting with for the username.
    Cheers,
    Dave

  • File server replacement

    zoranstojanovic wrote:
This new server will function as the file, print management, WSUS, and Hyper-V server.
I hope you mean file, print, and WSUS will be in virtual machines on a Hyper-V host, not that the host will have all those roles.  The Hyper-V server should be doing only that.
Personally, I would use two VM's, one for file and print, one for WSUS.  A Server 2012 R2 Standard license grants you two VM's, so you wouldn't need any extra.
Also, I would think DFS may help.  Set up a namespace and just change the target folders.

I plan on setting up a new file server to replace the current one in production. This new server will function as the file, print management, WSUS, and Hyper-V server. I'm thinking, to make my life easier, I'll keep the server name and IP the same. I found a good article on Spiceworks, http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/75097-replace-an-old-file-server-with-a-new-file-server-using...but have a few questions as my scenario is a little different. I've used the method in that link years ago when I migrated from the last server. This time all my shares are on my MSA2212fc. So I'm thinking as long as I import the shares registry key from the old server to the new oneand reassign the drives to the new server, everything should just work.. Right? Also, anyone think the server has too many roles?Any feedback would be greatly appreciated....
