Shortcut to move window to another desktop

I have a couple desktops setup on my OS X.
What is the shortcut to move a window to another desktop? I know I can drag it using the mouse but I have magicmousophobia and prefer to use the keyboard.

Hi User_014,
If you are looking for alternate ways to move windows across multiple spaces in Mavericks, you may find the following article helpful:
Move a window from one space to another
Do one of the following:
Drag the window to the edge of your screen and pause; after a moment, the window is switched to the next space.
Move the pointer over the window, then hold down the mouse button while pressing the Control key and an arrow key.
From the space that has the window you want to move, zoom to Mission Control. Then drag the window itself (not the thumbnail image) up to the space you want to use.

  • Command to move window to another desk?

i was wonding if there's a command to move a window to another desk. Also is there a "command line" thread because that would be really helpfull to people like me who don't know how to use it at all and would like to learn a little at their own pase, Thanks

Tayo.hatch wrote:yes i do mean workspace. I'm using Gnome, and a Bash thread would be desirable because people often have qustions about it for instance moving a window to another workspace, sorry for not knowing all the terms for this stuff, pretty new to the Linux world.
GNOME is a desktop environment, but that doesn't settle what window manager you're using, which would also be helpful to know. I think most GNOME users use either metacity or compiz, but strictly speaking there are quite a few others you might be using too, from openbox to a tiling wm. As for tools that work with a variety of window managers, xdotool has already been mentioned, and there's also wmctrl. But there's a good chance your window manager has something specific that might work even better. For example, in Compiz, activating the "Put" plugin will allow you to define key-bindings for sending windows to particular workspaces, or to adjacent ones.

  • When emails are opened I cannot move them to another desktop

    Yosemite 10.10
Looks like that when emails are opened they cannot be moved to another desktop and does not allow me to open another email.
Is this a new behavior, is there any settings change this or do I have a problem on my system?

I did not notice that I was in full scree mode. Yes that the issue, out of full screen it works like before.
Thanks a lot for the hint.

  • Move windows to new desktop

Another worsening. Differently from previous Lion, when you drag a window/program (ie Safari) you have to confirm with an extra click the positioning of this window. This is a wested click, especially using track pad.

Not here. I can drag a Window and drop it without an extra click. What exactly are you doing?

  • How to move a window to another, existing space that already has windows

NOT happy with the new Mission Control.  Give me back spaces!
I have been using virtual desktops (VDT) for years and I often work 14 to 18 hours a day on my mac..
I can reorder my spaces in MC but that seems to be about all I can do and it really is ******* me off.
I need to be able to drag a single window from 1 space to another space where I already have another application running. This was TRIVIAL in SPACES but seems impossible in MC.
example:  I have a text file of notes in vi in one VDT and in another I have a browser window open to a customer location where I need to use or add to those notes with some complexity. I want to move that notes window from the VDT that it is in (because there are other apps there) to the current VDT so that I can easily use the notes and the browser together. I do NOT want to have to make the stupid vi window in ALL spaces. How do I do this?
another example: I have a browser with multiple tabs and I want to move ONE of them to another VDT. I can pull the tab to make another window.. But I can't move just that tab to another VDT!! How can I do that?
Please please PLEASE fix this in Mountain Lion !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to start from the Desktop where the window is currently living to move it to another Desktop.
If you are using Safari in Full Screen, that screen is its own desktop and can't be moved to another desktop. If you are not in Full screen, go to the desktop that hosts the window and drag it to another Desktop in MC.

  • I can't set shortcut for „Application windows"

System Preferences → Exposé & Spaces → Exposé
I can’t set shortcut for „Application windows” — first column with Fn key is OK, but the second column with mouse button doesn’t work. If I set „secondary mouse button” for „application windows”, it doesn’t work. But if I set „secondary mouse button” to „All windows”, it works! All mouse shortcuts for „All windows” or „Show desktop” work, but no mouse shortcut for „Application windows” work . The same with „Mouse button 3” and other buttons.
    Can you help me, please?

Do you see the iTunes Library icon in the window? Click on it and the use the scroll bar to get to the tracks you want.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How do I move tabs from one window to another window?

With the previous version of firefox, I could drag a tab from one window to another window. (and if there was only one tab left in that window, it would automatically close that window because there were no more tabs open in it)
With the latest version of firefox, '''How do you drag or move a tab from one window to another window'''

    Hi,
To move to the next tab it's '''Ctrl''' + '''Tab''' or '''Ctrl''' + '''Pg Dn''' (Page Down). To go to the previous tabs (reverse order) it's '''Ctrl''' + '''Shift''' + '''Tab''' or '''Ctrl''' + '''Pg Up''' (Page Up) keys. • QT Playlist, or Run movies one afther another in same window maybe?

    What am i missing here?
Is it possible that QT can't open and run more movies and play it one after another in the same window?
Let's say if i dont want to use VLC or any other player, or PlayList plug inn's etc... (they are ugly ) and want to go to my movies, select two new movie trailers, want to show it, par example, to friend, and clik "open" ,"open with QT" or cmnd+O, whatsoever...but what happens? I get 2 movie windows on desktop. But i want to watch one (or many as i want) trailers after another, and got less desktop space used... :S
Hm, is this some weird Apple principle, or what?
What solutions do you guys use?
FrontRow looks like goodone but i got PPC G4 iMac, and i wont buy new one just for that!

This is beyond anything I have ever tried. But I think I know what you have in mind, and you should be able to do it using JavaScript. I did it with still images on this page:
    http://capital2.capital.edu/admin-staff/dalthoff/adventures/tr2005/ohfair2.html
You would need to give the movie container a name so that you can access it from JavaScript, and you have the added problem of needing to control the QuickTime object from JavaScript. Have a look at the QuickTime JavaScript API; it might be helpful:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/quicktime/Conceptual/QTScripting_JavaSc ript/index.html
In spite of the code on that gallery page I linked above, I really don't speak JavaScript, and I barely understand how my own code works. But I think JavaScript will allow you to do what you want to do, and you can probably even write a custom controller for the movie right into your web page.

  • No longer able to move individual windows to different desktops.

Recently ran into an issue, where I couldn't not move open applications between windows.
For example, I have iMail running in Desktop 1, and wanted to copy a single piece of email to Desktop 2, where I have a web browser running.
In another example, I wanted to copy an Email from Desktop 1 to Desktop 3, where I had Terminal running.  This used to work fine when I would bring up Mission Control and copy the individual email or terminal into another Desktop.  However, as of 10/13/2012, I can not longer do this, instead I see the icon for the app in Mission Control.  So instead of the individual emails showing up, the Mail icon appears and if I move the mail icon to another desktop, the entire Mail app moves to that desk top...not what I wanted.
Currently running 10.8.2 (12C60)  there was a minor mail update I did this weekend through the App store, although not sure exaxctly what it was.   Mail version is Version 6.2 (1499)
Any help is appreciated as this is very frsutrating.
For the record, I've looked at other co-workers running the same environment, and still seeing the old behavior.

    Hello colleen150,
If you are unable to move message to the trash on your iPad, then make sure to ensure that the settings for Trash is correct. You can find out how to do that below and if you are still having issues, then remove the email account and add it back in.
Get help with Mail on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS3899
    "Unable to move message"
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar. Then tap your email.
    Tap Account.
    Tap Advanced.
Tap Deleted Mailbox and make sure it's set to Trash.
Tap Advanced > Account. Then tap Done.
If you see the issue again, repeat steps 1 through 3, tap IMAP Path Prefix, then Inbox. After you make your changes, tap Account, then Done.

  • Moving tabs from one window to another makes the new window vanish. I have hot corners enabled so when I move up to the right corner of my display I can see all my open windows but when I click on the tab that I moved to make it its own window it vanishes

Moving tabs from one window to another makes the new window vanish. I have hot corners enabled so when I move up to the right corner of my display I can see all my open windows but when I click on the tab that I moved to make it its own window it vanishes

I came up with an alternative solution.
Instead of actually trying to move the JInternalFrame from one JDesktopPane to another, I added a single, maximized JInternalFrame to the left side. When one of the right side frames is to be docked, I merely copy its ContentPane to the single JInternalFrame on the left, set the original to be non-visible, and adjust the properties of the JSplitPane to make the "docked" frame appear.
When the "close" button on the docked frame is pressed, I simply undo this procedure to "undock" the frame and redisplay it on the right-hand side (with its content intact from the docked frame, but in its original position).

    Hi rarellano1,
In order to have an iCloud account available for the Messages application it must first be set up in System Preferences > Internet Accounts. If this is a second (or later) iCloud account, it will not have Messages available. See this article for details -

  • Window Configuration on Desktop and temp disable New Window

    Hi All.
I seem to find myself constantly needing to arrange three or four windows in list mode so that I can move things from my Desktop, Laptop, Time Capsule and iDisk. Sort of a major sort mode if you will.
I always find myself arranging three or four sets of Finder Windows on the Desktop, snuggling them up against each other - all while trying to avoid too major an overlap or some kind of overlap configuration that lets me jump and jive from one window to another all while dragging and dropping files and folders.
Is there a better way to do this?
Is there a way to save this configuration?
Is there a way to use the laptop screen as a kind of second display where if I roll off the left hand side of my desktop window I end up in the Finder on my laptop (a stretch I know)?
Also(!) is there a way to temporarily prevent the Open Folder in New Finder Window action that I have set? Right now if I have the windows organized the way I need them - but I need to just open a subfolder on the ,say the Laptop Finder Window, I always end up with /another/ Finder window which I then have to figure out what to do with...
Can I automagically dock these things somehow?
Anyway, I have the added complication of not understanding Expose or Spaces yet as I have tried to stay away from them for fear that their buttons interfere with my MacBookPro buttons or the buttons I use when running WIndows in BootCamp (I know my understanding is totally butchered here but I figure to try to clear this up soon).
Thanks for anything wonderfully helpful on this.
    - Jon

You might try a third-party utility such as Witch to create window sets that can be configured and restored. Look for it and others at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Shortcut for downloads window in Safari does not work

    Hi everybody,
My shortcut for downloads window in Safari (command-option-L) does not work anymore, when i press that combination of buttons, iTunes appears in my screen.
Can i do something to bring back my shortcut?
    Santiago

    Ok...
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
    Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. Try the keyboard shortcut for the Downloads window. If it didn't help, just move that .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
Also, go to your Safari menu bar click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset. Restart your Mac. That might help too.
