Shortcuts to switch views in Finder don't work

I am reading that Apple-1, Apple-2, and Apple-3 will switch between the icon, list, and column view in the Finder. Yet when I try this, nothing happens. Does it work on your machine, and if so, any idea why it doesn't work on mine?

Try this:
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and trash these two files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

Sleep --> cmd + alt + eject

Shutdown --> ctrl + alt + cmd + eject

Does single-user mode work? Command-S at startup. Since that doesn't rely on anything but the keyboard, this might be a good test.
Have the other keyboard shortcuts ever worked on your computer, or did they recently cease to work?

[SOLVED] Keyboard-shortcuts "alt+." and "alt+d" don't work under X11

I switched from gentoo to archlinux and everything is running fine except my following really annoying problem:
The keycombinations "alt+." (insert the last parameter from the line before) and "alt+d" (delete the word under the cursor) don't work under X11 (in my xterm).
They work before I start X with bash and zsh btw...
My "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-keyboard.conf" looks like

Gnome3.6 shortcuts for "switch to next source" doesn't work after lock

If you have two or more input sources, once you have locked the screen, when typing password for re-login, the "switch to next source" shortcuts ("Ctrl+Space" for me) doesn't work.
I don't know whether it is a feature, or a bug? In fact I wonder if ALL THE SHORTCUTS DO NOT WORK AFTER LOCK.
Have anyone come up with this problem? If it is a bug, have it been reported to GNOME Bugzilla?

Shortcuts to close tab (CMD+W) don't work if a YouTube video is selected

Safari 8.0 (unlike the previous version) will not close a tab with a shortcut, if I have a YouTube video selected within the browser. I.e. if I click somewhere else on the YouTube page, shortcuts start to work again.

I agree with your diagnosis of the problem.
When the plugin trapping the focus is an embedded Flash player, you can use certain meta keys to resolve the issue. For example, you can use Alt+Tab twice to switch focus between Firefox and another application and then back again.
I'm not sure whether there is a solution when the entire tab is taken over by the Adobe Acrobat plugin because when the focus comes back to Firefox the focus within the page remains in the control. (Also, at least on my system, the control sometimes seems to hang and fails to redraw, so this definitely is not a recommended approach.) Does it work for you to disable the Adobe Acrobat plugin so that PDFs launch in the stand-alone Adobe Reader application?

Some keyboard shortcuts in Mail OS 10.9 don't work

Some keyboard shortcuts no longer work. Such as [option page-down] for moving down a page at a time of email subjects. Control Page Down doesn't work either. Others are wacky and give different results such as Function right arrow does the same thing as End and Function left arrow does the same thing as Home which is a bit redundant.
Did they change to a different combination of keystrokes are were they left out? Thanks to anyone that can find out. -Derryl

Spacebar and other shortkeys don't work...

Hello lads!
I've ran into a big problem my G5(osx 10.3.7)...Some of the shortcuts in the Adobe CS package don't work anymore and the spacebar fails in any application!
I'm a newbee with the mac, and i don't understand anything about the key failures...Allready plugged the keyboard in and out, updated my osx 10.3.5 to 7... restored the keyboard settings...
Please can someone tell me what is wrong...? I'm going mad about it...

It sounds like there might be a problem with your keyboard. Borrow or buy a USB keyboard (it can be a PC keyboard if that's all that you have access to), and plug it into your Mac and see if all of the keys work properly in your applications. If it does, replace your keyboard.
Another way to test your keyboard from a software perspective would be to create a new user account, login to that account, and see if all of your keys behave properly in your apps. If they do, then it would definitely point to this being a software issues...possibly a corrupt preference file for the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane.

I have some loops from acid 5 which I have dragged in a folder to the loop browser. Some of them retain the folder name in the View: and some don't. I have had some that seem to go in but I can't find them. Where should I look?

When I click on a file to view in Finder in the view as columns, Finder stops responding. If I use Finder in any of the other views, I don't have an issue.

When I go to finder and view as columns so that the right column will open a preview of the file, I get the endless spinning graphic and when I go to Force Quit, it shows that Finder has stopped responding. When I use Finder in any other view mode, I don't have that issue. This just started today. As far as I know, I haven't done any updates today that would cause the issue. I've restarted a few times. I'm running 10.10 on iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011). I when to updates in the App Store and saw there was an update for 10.10.1 and tried to run it twice now. It starts to install and says I have 7 minutes left and then at about 3 minutes, it just opens all my windows again and acts normally. When I go to "About this mac", I'm still showing 10.10 as the OS. Also, in the App Store, when I click on updates, it shows me 4 updates that I've already installed as ready to install. Not really sure what's going on nor why all the sudden this is an issue, but I use the preview mode in Finder all the time so I would love a fix for this. I've tried logging out and logging in as another user and the same issue with Finder happens with other users as well. I've emptied my trash bin as well.

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.

Keyboard shortcut for switching between orthogonal views?

I know that F10, F11, F12 toggle between the custom views, but is there a shortcut or a way to create the shortcut for switching between the different orthogonal views? What's the easiest way to switch between top and left views?

Xtrafinder seems to have broken my 'list view' in Finder. Please Help.

I'm using 10.9.4.
I installed XtraFinder a couple of days ago and instantly my Finder didn't work in list view or column view
I can still use it in icon view but none of the others
I've attached an image as an example of what happens when I switch to list view from icon view. I have completely uninstalled Xtrafinder using its own uninstall method.

It's not really clear that you still have a problem, but if you think you do, see below.
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Why the shortcut of switch to next/previous tab(ctr+tab) doesn't work?(firefox 6)

I recently update firefox 6.0 version, but I can't use the shortcut(ctr+tab) to switch to next/previous tab. I download an extension called Customizable Shortcuts, also I can't find the item of witch to next/previous tab in it.
How can I fix this problem? It is really necessary for me.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
