Shortcuts, tricks and tips!

Do you know of any shortcuts, tricks or tips that might not be common knowledge? Maybe you've discovered something we might not all know about. Let's share these with each other. I learned from someone here today that you can hold down the "home key" and touch the power button for a second and you will get a "screen shot" that you can paste into an email. Or hold your finger on a picture in Safari or an email for three seconds and it will give you an option to make a copy, which will be stored with your "camera roll" under your Photos. Anybody have any other tips?

Here's one that most people don't know about. When typing on any program or application, internet, anyting at all, you can HOLD DOWN the key that switches to numbers and symbols, KEEP HOLDING, even while selecting a number or symbol, SELECT IT, then simply let go. THe number or symbol will be inserted, and you will automatically be sent back to the letters keyboard, instead of having to go back to the lower left part of the screen to type the letters symbol
From owner's manual, page 27 - Chapter 2
1. Type uppercase: Tap the Shift key before tapping a letter.
2. Quickly type a period and space: Double-tap the space bar.
3. Turn caps lock on: Enable caps lock (see “Keyboard” section), then double-tap the Shift key. The Shift key turns blue, and all letters you type are uppercase. Tap the Shift key again to turn caps lock off.
4. Show numbers, punctuation, or symbols: Tap the Number (?123) key. Tap the Symbol key to see additional punctuation and symbols.
5. Type letters or symbols that aren’t on the keyboard: Press and hold the related letter or symbol, then slide to choose a variation.

  • Arch Linux gaming setup, any ideas tricks and tips?

Okay so I want to improve my current setup So what should I change? I use ext4 system open source drivers and lxqt for desktop I have no apps installed really apart from steam and chromium but I'd like more performance out of my a4 5000 apu
So any ideas/tricks/tips etc you know that helps play stuff like hl2 tf2 and some indie titles, and maybe witcher 2 haha no not a chance on this processor lol
    Anyways thanks!

You might want to take a look at linux-ck, brebs has some useful suggestions in one of his signature links and I bet you can find more in the forums. Try to optimize every component, one by one (gather information, test, upgrade firmware/drivers if useful, repeat), and concentrate on your systems bottleneck[s_]. Other than that, using ABS and AUR provide a possibility to compile packages for your specific hardware setup. Use with caution, could be detrimental. Should you also use wine for gaming, try wine-d3dstream[-git] package from AUR, remember to enable its benefits in registry.

  • Need obfuscating tricks and tips

Give me some tips and tricks for obfuscating an j2me application(game).
    Thanks in advance..

    Do you mean this?
    * To use obfuscator, it need proguard.jar file to get it, do the following
    1. Go to http://proguard.sourceforge.net/.
    2. Select the "Download" link.
    3. Select "Download section".
    4. Choose the latest version of proguard.zip and save it to yours disk.
    5. Extract the proguard.jar file from proguard.zip into the bin subdirectory of the WTK.
    * Integrate ProGuard with WTK
ProGuard plug-in can be seamlessly integrated in the Sun J2ME Wireless Toolkit (WTK)
    Edit in the file
    {WTK_DIR}/wtklib/Linux/ktools.properties
    or
    {WTK_DIR}\wtklib\Windows\ktools.properties
    * Put these lines in above file (for windows)
    obfuscator.runner.class.name: proguard.wtk.ProGuardObfuscator
    obfuscator.runner.classpath: wtklib\\proguard3.6\\lib\\proguard.jar
    * Uncompress the zip file to
    {WTK_DIR}\wtklib\proguard3.6
    * To apply it on projects
Open project in WTK & go to
Project -> Package -> Create Obfuscated Package

  • Secret dragging tricks and keyboard shortcuts - are these published anywhere?

I have searched for some and stumbled upon others. But I have not seen any of these published or posted anywhere. If so, can you tell me? Either way, you may find some useful ones here. Enjoy! (I think most of these work in Lion. Any keyboard shortcuts you know for Time Machine would be most welcome.)
    *** THE DOCK ***
Press ^F3 to move to the dock. Use the arrow keys to select an icon. You can also use autocomplete (type the first few letters of the icon's name). Then press Opt-arrow_key to move the *icon* among the other icons on the Dock. Thus you can change the order of the icons on the Dock using only the keyboard.
    *** DRAGGING TRICKS ***
    o SAVE-AS SHEET TRICK
Open an app's Save As sheet. Drag a folder or its proxy icon to anywhere in the Save As sheet except the sidebar and that updates the directory (folder) field with that folder. Drag a file or its proxy icon to the Save As sheet (anywhere except the sidebar) and that updates both the directory (folder) and file fields accordingly.
Why do I do this? I find it easier to use the actual Finder, or I may already have a Finder window in the right directory.
You can also click on a directory or file in the Save As sheet to populate the directory or file fields, respectively. Then edit the filename to a slightly different name.
o COPY A FOLDER TREE TO A TEXT DOCUMENT
Open a true text-only editor session using an app like TextWrangler (not TextEdit!). Drag a folder (or its proxy icon) from the Finder into the editor window. Viola`! The names of the folder and all its subfolders and files are pasted into the text buffer in a properly indented form.
o COPY A FILE TO A TEXT DOCUMENT
Drag a file from the Finder into a text-only editor like TextWrangler or similar (not TextEdit!) and the _contents_ of the file (not its icon) are inserted into the document.
o MAKE A NEW FILE THAT CONTAINS SELECTED TEXT
Select some text. Drag it to a folder. This creates a "textClipping" file which contains the selected text. Opens as a "Finder document".
o COPY A PHOTO FROM IPHOTO TO A FOLDER
Open iPhoto. Drag (to copy) a photo to a folder. Makes a jpeg file of the photo in that folder.
    *** KEYBOARD TRICKS ***
    o MENUS AND LISTS
Opt-U/D: Move highlight bar to top or bottom of most menus and lists. Does not work in Spotlight drop-down menu. Works in Snow Leopard Mac Mail (v 4.5, anyway) if you hold it down for a second: you get an error signal, but it works anyway.
PgUp/PgDn | Home/End: Moves highlight bar to top or bottom of menus. Moves only the view for lists.
Opt-Spacebar: Move highlight to the alphabetically first item in a menu (except in the Spotlight drop-down menu).
    o SPOTLIGHT DROP-DOWN MENU
After selecting an item on the drop-down menu via the arrow keys:
    Cmd-Return: Open enclosing folder.
    o SPOTLIGHT WINDOW
If ^F7 is set to "all controls", press ^F7 four times if it's the first search in a particular Spotlight window; two, otherwise. This moves you to the list of results.
If ^F7 is set to "text boxes and lists only", just Tab.
    o CALENDAR WIDGET
Home: go to the current year and month.
Up, down, left, right arrows: go one year back, one year forward, one month back, one month forward. Hold a L or R arrow down to autorepeat through the years. (You can't do _that_ with the mouse!) Also works with U and D for the months.
    o SPELL CHECK
Cmd-Shift-; - Open spelling pane. But you knew that one. Press ^F6 to get to the pane. Tab around to everything except Define and Guess. With the focus on the replacements list, use the arrow keys to select a replacement word from the list. (Press the spacebar to run the control with the highlight perimiter and press Return to run the control with the solid highlighting.)
    o MAIL
Cmd-I - Open Account Info window
    o NAVIGATING HELP PANES
    - Old-style help panes :
Open the menu pane in the usual way. The Highlight perimeter will be on the search window.
Tab: Move among the Search field, the page, and the controls on top. Add Shift to reverse.
    When on the page:
Use the usual navigation keys -- Up, Down, Home, End, Page up, and Page Down, Spacebar, Shift-Spacebar -- to scroll through the page.
Opt-Tab: move among the links on the page or items in a "Help Topics" list. The highlight perimeter will be rectangular. Press Return or Enter to click the selected link or item. Add Shift to reverse direction.
Cmd-F: Open the Find bar. Move about with Tab. Move among the arrows with L or R arrow keys. To find a string: Type your search string in the Find field. Press Return or Enter. Press again to find the next occurrence, etc.
To go to the page from the Find bar: Shift-Tab to the left or right arrow. Then press Shift-Tab two more times.
To close the Find bar: Tab to Done and press the spacebar or just press Escape.
You can return to the app via ^F6, but the help pane stays open.
When the highlight perimeter is on one of the arrow controls, press Spacebar to click it. If the left arrow control is selected press the down arrow to see places going backward. If the right arrow control is selected press the Down arrow to see a list of places going forward. Either way, use the usual menu navigational shortcuts.
When the highlight perimeter is on the Home control, press the down arrow to get a menu of apps. (The mouse way for this is to click and hold and "drag" and release as above.) The usual menu navigational shortcuts are valid. Also, you can press the spacebar to go Home.
When the highlight perimeter is on the Gear button, press the spacebar or down arrow to get the drop-down menu. The usual menu navigational shortcuts are in effect.
(To do any of the above three with the mouse, click on the control and hold the mouse button down, then without releasing the mouse button, move the pointer to highlight the desired item on the menu and release the mouse button.)
    - New-style help panes:
Open the menu pane in the usual way. The Highlight perimeter will be on the search window.
Tab to move around to most things. The table of contents becomes keyboard-active one Tab-press past the Search field, at which point use the L and R arrow keys to navigate the Contents panel, and the U and D arrow keys to move the down and up the page.
To be able to use PageUp and PageDn, Tab to the back/forward button, then press Shift-Opt-Tab.
Cmd-F: Opens the Find bar. Navigate with Tab and L/R arrow keys. When you are on this bar, press Shift-Tab repeatedly until the highlight perimeter moves out. Then press Shift-Tab once more to go back to the page, where the L and R arrow keys move you around the TOC sidebar and the U and D arrow keys scroll the page.
AFAIK, you can choose Get Started or Browse Help only with the mouse.
You can return to the app via ^F6, but the help pane stays open.

I guess you meant that unfortunately these don't have them.
    (1) I meant that, unfortunately for your impressive work, there's nothing in it that hasn't already been documented elsewhere. The two items I mentioned contain your shortcuts, and many more besides.
I don't see any of them in either. I have Pogue's book and they're not there. In fact, I emailed these tricks to him and he was impressed with some of them. And of course there are more. I never claimed to have an exhaustive list. In fact, I doubt anyone has such a list.
    (2) Mac OS X v10.6 has been out for, what is it, 3 years? If you think that there are any 'secret' shortcuts left, then you seriously underestimate the average Mac user. Some of that stuff is even older. For instance, the "Save-As Sheet Trick" dates back to Jaguar, or even before that. "Make a New File That Contains Selected Text" is older than Mac OS X itself!
Well, first of all there's no need to get hostile.
I don't underestimate the average Mac user. But I would venture to guess that most are heavily mouse oriented and would not even be interested in the keyboard tricks I posted. And I only said that I haven't seen them on any website, not that no one else in the world knows about them.
Additionally, there have been things missed by the smartest of people. Stereo vision was missed even by Issac Newton, one of the biggest geniuses to grace the planet! It was Wheatstone who first picked up on it. And it used to be thought that a cube flying by at relatvisitic speed would appear foreshortened in the direction of motion. In fact, as was noted decades after relativity was published, it in fact appears rotated. If super smart people could miss this, then perhaps those few who publish these tricks may not know about them.
Re the save-as trick and the new-file-contains-your-text tricks: fine, they're old, but so are many of the tricks that are posted on websites. So why some old ones but not others? How about cut and paste? I bet they're pretty old but that doesn't prevent people from posting them, as in your first reference!
    (3) Also unfortunately, your listing mixes up shortcuts and 'tricks' of different categories. For instance, "Copy a File to a Text Document" is not secret, it is not a trick, and it is not relevant. What an app does with a file dropped onto an open document of its own does not depend on the system, but on the app and how it was programmed. TextEdit inserts a text file's path while TextWrangler inserts the text file's contents not because the former is not a text editor, but because that's how each was designed to work. And TextWrangler's behaviour is documented in the accompanying manual.
So one of my tricks is lame. I don't see that as that big a deal.
Bottom line: I don't see any of them in the docs you referenced.

I am trying to find an app or software to burn iMovie 11 slideshow to a dvd.  I have a MacBook Pro with Mavericks.  There are a lot of DVD Creator apps at the App store. Looking for a recommendation of what to use and tips. Thank you.

I've been using "Burn" for years and it has been the only DVD burning software I have ever used for the mac. I have never needed to look at other apps. Unless you want something that has more bells and whistles such as Roxio's "Toast" : http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/pro/overview.html
There are thousands of quality free apps out there for the mac that are not part of the App Store. All you have to do is read reviews online, do a little search, the Apple forums are full of recommendations from experienced users that have been here for years...

  • Right-Click pop-up more than one Description and tip

Is it possible to edit the run-time popup menu for a right click on a control?
My front panel has a cluster within a cluster and the right-click popup menu gives you two different "Description and Tip" to select from. This is confusing for the user.
How do I edit the run-time right-click popup menu?

    hi
search for right click, context menu etc. in this forum. there are several posted vis to create your own right-click menues and catch the selected item (some of them are really neat).

On starting up my new iPhone 4s, it freezes on the apple logo. I have tried the reset buttons trick and have tried restoring again too but neither works. Any other ideas? Or is the phone simply corrupt in some way?

Did you try to connect in recovery mode and restore without using the latest backup?
Recovery mode and  How to back up your data and set up as a new device
If setting up as new device does not work, you'll have to get it serviced or looked at by visiting an Apple Store.
Did you try to remove the ipsw firmware file and restore, to make iTunes download a new copy from Apple?
    Those files are located here:
Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw)
iTunes uses "ipsw" files to restore your iPod or iPhone. If those files are unusable, then try deleting them, renaming them, or moving the file to a different directory. This will cause iTunes to download a new copy of the IPSW. When a restore issue is specific to a user, it is likely due to an unusable .ipsw file. If removing the .ipsw file does not resolve a user-specific restore issue, then the issue is caused by other user-specific security software settings or iTunes preferences. Creating a new user will also cause new .ipsw restore files to be downloaded in the new user. You can find the ".ipsw" files in these locations:

    iPhone
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

  • Hints and tips about OCP certification 10g

    Hi,
in a few weeks I will have my certification test for OCP Oracle 10g.
For this I'm interested in hints and tips for the test. Did somebody completed this test (not the upgrade one) and could tell me please the main topic, some tips for best preparation and so on? Are the questions only "multiple choice" or are there also "fill-in" questions?
    Thank you in advance
    Dana

    Hi Dana
It's all multiple choice. If you are going for OCP I assume you will be writing 10g DBA 2. The following link has exam details like passing score, points per chapter, etc.

  • IWeb Hints and Tips

How about hearing your Hints and Tips for iWeb?
Here's one to get the ball rolling.....
Most of my attempts at graphics have been done in Keynote due to the extra features that iWeb will hopefully inherit some day. (Apple please take note!)
The navigation buttons were made in iWeb and are a bit of a pain to do every time. Here's a tip on how to save them in a file for dropping into other web pages. I discovered this by accident when I was poking around the iDisk files to see what happened to my web pages after I hit the publish button.
Make up a page of your graphics and publish it. Then open up your local iDisk and go to Web/Sites/iWeb/Website/PageName_files and there you will find your graphics listed as shapeimage_1( 2 3 4....).png. Drag these out and drop them into your newly created Web Graphics folder. Drag and drop them onto iWeb pages as required.
    http://web.mac.com/roddymckay/iWeb/PlanetRoddy/Roddy.html
This site changes with the wind - get to it quick before it disappears!
Due to an overload of graphics, music etc. it downloads at snail's pace - so much for "High Speed" internet.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.5GB Ram

    Funky, I liked it
I keep all my graphics in an iweb images folder as the original .key files. This way, if I ever want to make a change to just the stroke or fill or the included text without redoing the image, I can.
Here's an added tip for Keynoters. If you bring over grouped shapes, iWeb will not allow you to add a drop shadow to them. To enable this, copy the group, open Preview, do a command-N, then copy the image from there. It'll get pasted into iWeb as a PDF and you'll then be able to add a shadow.

  • Print Problem : Print description and tips from structures, nodes and loops from block diagram

    Hello,
I've just completed the entire documentation of my VI and I did describe some Case structures and Formula Nodes. Now I want to print the VI with the VI printer and when I select ''Description'' in the custom printer manager, it doesn't select the description from most functions in the block diagram such as Formula Node, Case Structure, etc.
Is there a way to get these descriptions in the printed version VI ?
    Thanks a lot !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Weepet,
After some investigation, it turns out that this behavior is expected behavior.  Please see the following help topic
    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361G-01/lvhowto/creating_vi_and_object_de/
Essentially, Context Help will only display the description for controls, indicators, and constants.  At the same time, the descriptions will only print if that description is available in context help.  LabVIEW primitives will always use the description from the documentation, and will not display your custom "Description and Tips".  So, for primitives like case structures and formula nodes, we cannot get that information to print. The behavior that you're seeing is expected.
Perhaps you can just use comments to document these functions?  You can double click on a blank area of the block diagram and provide comments.

  • Is there a trick or tip for envelopes?

Is there a trick or tip for envelopes?
In Word it was easy to print an envelope. You were able to set up your preference for return address & font & a different font for the outgoing address & save it. Then when finished typing a letter you could highlight the outgoing address, copy it & go to Tools/Letters & mailings/Envelopes & mailings & you got a separate window with your previously set fonts & return address. All you had to do was paste your outgoing address in the address field & then you were ready to print the envelope. This was very useful & FAST as you need not save a separate file with the address. Especially if you didn’t plan on more letters to that address.
I cannot figure out how to do something similar in Pages. The best I can come up with is slow & many steps. I must open a new FROM TEMPLATE CHOOSER Pages window from the file menu, select a particular envelope, get a new window & type in all the address information including my return address selection; fonts, size, etc. Then that Envelope file can be used to print an envelope & you now have a separate file to save.
There MUST be an easier way. I finally created a template titled “aaaaaaa envelope template” & put in my return address in the font & size I wanted. I also typed a sample outgoing address in the (larger) font I often use for envelopes.
Now when I finish a letter I copy the outgoing address, I locate & open my “aaaaaaa envelope template” file & highlight the sample address & paste my desired outgoing address from the letter I just typed. Next, I must “save as”in order to both keep the new file & save my template. This cannot be the best way to do this. I know many Mac people type many letters (I don’t) & this would drive them crazy or to buy Word (ugh).
    Suggestions?

Well, I guess there is NOT some obvious tip or trick I missed. I am already using a template I created. From my original post:
“I finally created a template titled “aaaaaaa envelope template” & put in my return address in the font & size I wanted. I also typed a sample outgoing address in the (larger) font I often use for envelopes.
Now when I finish a letter I copy the outgoing address, I locate & open my “aaaaaaa envelope template” file & highlight the sample address & paste my desired outgoing address from the letter I just typed.”
I don’t do that many envelopes or letters, maybe a few per month. I don’t put street addresses in my address book just email addresses. (I think I’ll add street addresses)
Thanks Walt, I D/L Easy Envelope Widget. I’ll play around with it soon. I actually do not have my actual name listed on my address book the entry is titled “Me” (Not sure why, perhaps just an unneeded security habit) so that is what appears in the return address for Easy Envelope & I doubt that can be manually changed/saved as per the FAQ. I like the idea of printing the postal bar code to speed things up though.

  • Are there any magazines with articles and tips for Encore - English language

Are there any magazines with articles and tips for Encore - English language

The very best "chronicle" on Encore that I can come up with is Jeff Bellune's Focal Easy Guide to Adobe EncoreDVD 2.0, Focal Press. It was written for EncoreDVD 2.0, but everything in it applies to CS4. Now, as of CS4, Adobe Dynamic Link to PrPro has been greatly improved and strengthened, and that part will have to come from the Help files. The book is still the best resource for 99% of Encore, and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. It is an invaluable reference, whether you have EnDVD 2.0, CS3 or CS4.
As for magazine articles, Encore is mentioned in some, but I do not recall any specific to the program. Same for books on DVD/BD authoring. I have several, that use Encore for some examples, and other authoring programs for others.
The closest thing that we have to the PrPRo-Wiki, mentioned in your thread in the PrPro forum, is the wonderful set of Encore FAQ's on this forum. Jeff Bellune and Neil Wilkes have done a great job of rebuilding those, and most were lost, when the forum underwent a major changeover about 1.5 years ago.
Next, just reading this forum will help one learn how to do much in Encore, and also how to solve any problems.
One other asset that needs to be pointed out is the link in this ARTICLE to Jim Taylor's DVD FAQ. His book, DVD Demystified, by McGraw Hill, will tell you everything that you would ever want to know about DVD/BD, and his FAQ site will cover most of the important info.
Great reading in each of those. That is not an all-inclusive list, but all that I can think of for now.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
