Shorten Menu items to make room for more icons in menu bar
Is there any way to shorten the menu items in the menu bar, so that there will be more space for the icons? For instance, in Safari, the first Menu item, File, could be abbreviated to F, Edit could be E, etc. That way, the shortcuts for apps through icons in the menu bar would have more space, to permit more icons to be shown.
An option, although not a full fledged one, would be to configure the icons in much the same way as in the dock, drag and drop them to the desired location.
Any thoughts on this?
Not possible by normal methods - some hacking is required.

You can tap and hold down on the the TV show icon in the Videos app and an X will pop up to delete the shows.
You may also want to connect the iPad to your computer and transfer the purchases to iTunes before you delete them so that you can store them on your computer's iTunes. Connect the iPad and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side under "devices" and select Transfer Purchases. You can also do this from the iTunes menu - File>Transfer Purchases.
If you live in the U.S. the UK, Canada or Australia - you can download purchased TV shows again for free in the purchased tab of iTunes as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought the shows with. -
I moved a bunch of my husband's files from his Macbook (which is dieing) to my iMac. I created a user for him on my iMac so he'd be able to keep his stuff separate from mine. All is working great except my Time Machine is now unable to backup. The total of used space on my hard drive (including the recently added user's files) is about 420 GB. The amount of capacity of my external hard drive is 999GB. I think Time Machine failed because there was all of a sudden so much more data and a new full backup would be more than the unused capacity of the HD? Regardless I don't need any old backups. I have all my files and all his files. So I moved all the backups from the external HD to the trash. Apparently that's a no no. I can't fully empty the trash now and that is making my iMac crazy slow.
1) Can anyone tell me how to force the trash to empty?
2) Is there a way to delete the whole external HD and start over with a new full backup via Time Machine? In Disk Utility I try to erase the partition and get an error "Volume Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk." Then I try to Unmount it and get another "Unmount failed. The disk Backup iOmega could not be unmounted. Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk." I turned off Time Machine and tried again but with the same errors.
The external HD is called iOmega. It only connects to the iMac with USB. Any help is much appreciated!!!!Try this instead:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup volume from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
4. Click on the Erase button.
You will need to reconfigure Time Machine preferences for the backup.
FYI: Never remove Time Machine backup data except through the Time Machine application. If you aren't sure about using Time Machine then visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things related to Time Machine. -
I deleted lots of emails. I compacted the file. I emptied the trash. I rebooted. I deleted more emails. I rebooted. Nothing worked. Space left is approx. 50%. Pls help.
is this an IMAP mail account? If so
Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > server settings and set expunge on exit.
What version of Thunderbird do you have? -

Deleted items from Ipod Nano to make room for new. Emptied trash. Still getting error message when I try to copy items from ITunes to Ipod. What should I do now?
If you delete songs (and other items) from the main iTunes library, yes, you need to empty the Trash because iTunes puts the song files into the Trash. When deleting items from an iPod, the items are not being deleted from the main iTunes library, so nothing should end up in the Trash.
Hopefully, you are not deleting items from your main iTunes library, just to sync those deletions from the iPod. If you are, there is a better way. You can post back if you want more info... -
My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos? Or will the next time I back up lose all those previously backed up as it is a 'new' set of data?
I just want to find the easiest and safest way of not losing all my photos while being able to take more than my iPhones storage worth as it is already full - can someone help me please? I thought icloud was the solution to not uploading my photos to the mac but I'm not sure if the way it's going is working and don't want to delete photos or lose my phone and then find out what I'm doing isn't actually storing my photos permanently. As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. My Nano is full and I can no longer sync more music. How do I delete duplicate songs on the Nano to make room for syncing more songs?
I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first. -

Ive had this and solved it an entirely different way very quickly.
Connect the ipad to the imac (i assume its an imac);
Fire up itunes;
while thats happening create a new folder called EMPTY in your Pictures folder on the imac;
go back to itunes;
select the ipad;
go to photos on the ipad;
select SYNC FROM SELECTED FOLDER;
select your EMPTY folder;
then hit SYNC and the photos / videos in photo albums / the albums will all instantly disappear.
We had 7.98 Gb of syncd fotos and videos on the ipad and tried all the more lengthy [and unsuccessful] ways suggested elsewhere.
There was so little space we couldnt u/d the IOS !
OK, so we werent bothered about keeping the fotos that were on the ipad (they'd all been filed in iphot on the imac so not 'lost').

When I have a PDF that I want to open and save into iBooks - it will attempt to open it and the shelf flips around to make room for it. But it doesn't save it. I have to end up opening it in Adobe or Kindle app to view & save it. This has been doing this awhile, what's wrong. Should
I take it and have it looked at?is there any important stuff saved to your emails? if so you could log on to your emails from a seperate device and back them up. im not sure what else you could do :/

Time Machine no longer deletes older files to make room for new ones.
I happened to notice today, that Time Machine is failing when attempting to do updates. I also notice that the HDD is just about full. Time machine should delete the oldest backups to make room for the new ones, but for some reason this isn't happening. I also tried deleting some of the older folders manually. It says it deletes them, the folder icon disappears, but the available space never increases. If I reboot, the folders I deleted are still there. Time Machine has no problem reading the files, but apparently can't delete them. Anyone have an idea as to what might be happening? It used to work, but now something is 'broken' and I have no idea where to start looking. I am running OSX 10.5.3.
don't delete old backups from finder. delete them from TM interface. start TM and navigate to the backup you want to delete. click on the "gears" action button in finder's toolbar and select "delete backup". You'll have to enter your admin password. you might have to do this for several backups to clear up enough space. the deletion process can take a while so be patient. This is not guaranteed to make TM start deleting old backups by itself but it might.

I deleted my music through the "manage storage" section in the options to make room for the ios update awhile back. Now I can't get any music back onto my device through itunes. (I've tried restoring the device twice to no avail)
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
