Shot Canon Vixia HV40 at 24 but it's coming in at 29.97

I have shot and brought footage in with this camera before but haven't done so in 6 mths maybe.  For some reason, I can't get it to come in correctly and have tried restarting the computer, a different computer, selecting the settings again, double checking that I shot in 24 etc.  It's coming in at HDV 1080i60 and 29.97fps.  I have the easy setup set to 23.98fps.  I'm on FCP 6 and have loaded from this camera in this before.  Has anyone come across this?  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

The camera can be set to record HDVPF24 which is recorded at 1080i with a visual appearance  of 24 fps, or HDV24F which records at true native 24P (23.98).
From the manual:
Is it possible your material was recorded with the PF24 setting, which will appear as 1080i60 on ingest?

  • Why won't iMovie recognize canon vixia hv40

I need to just simply get video off of my canon vixia hv40 with iMovie, but it won't recognize my video camera.

Are you using a Firewire cable to connect the camera to your MacBook Pro? Ensure also that there are no other Firewire devices connected to your MBP.

  • Canon Vixia HV40 Selects But No Video

My new Canon Vixia HV40 video camera transfers live video into iMovie 8 fine, and Quicktime sees the camera in Preferences:Recording, but when actually recording in Quicktime, the error message is:
"Recording failed because no data was received. Make sure that the media input source is turned on and playing."
Are Apple drivers complete for this camera?
    Thanks.

Get a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for file transfer.
Or call Canon's cam tech support.

  • How can I get Premier Elements to recognize my Canon Vixia  HV40 to record tape from it?

I recently installed Adobe Premier Elements 12 on my new Lenovo U310 Ideapad computer.  I opened the program and was able to transfer a clip from a file transfered to me from a smart phone recording and start assembling a new home movie.  However, when I tried to get video footage from my Canon Vixia HV40 tape camcorder, I received a message "No HDV camera connected.  I then used my older Canon Vixia HV20 camera and changed the USB connecting cable, but that camera too was not recognized.  In the past, I had been succesfull using an older version of Premie Elements to get footage from my Canon camera.  Is it possible that this new Premier Elements 12 is not programed to pick up  these Canon video cameras or is their some way around this problem.  My new computer does not have a 1394 input.

As far as I have ever seen reported DV or HDV data capture into Premiere Elements Capture Windows (any version) does not work unless the connection is firewire. And, there are occasions (especially with HDV capture firewire) the require that the capture firewire be done in HDVSplit and then the split clips imported into a Premiere Elements project via the typical Get Media/Add Media route.
Which version of Premiere Elements allowed you to do a DV or HDV capture firewire in to its Capture Window using a USB connection? From what you wrote it gave me the impression that you were saying that you had.
If you have followed the protocol for HDV data capture firewire into Premiere Elements 12 (with correct project preset)
    http://help.adobe.com/fr_FR/premiereelements/using/WS5CDA0F91-60F1-4b79-ABF6-E9E75F498DB2. html#WS2AF26FB5-4C63-4c46-9DB3-7249558F6528
then you would need to explore the use of HDVSplit (firewire connection) and then import of the .m2t split clips from that process in to Premiere Elements 12 (Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets).
    http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm
If both these Canon camera are miniDV camcorders, then you need a firewire connect to the data capture into Premiere Elements Capture Windows.
Do you have access to a computer with a firewire port?
    Or
Does your computer have what is referred to as a PCMCIA slot for use with a firewire card? Have you looked into the possibility? No sure if that will work for you.

  • How do import footage from Canon Vixia HV40 to Macbook Pro?

    Hello everyone,
I am in dire need of help! I have to edit video footage from a conference and all of it was filmed on the Canon Vixia HV40. I received a slip in the camcorder bag that said make sure computer and camera are off before plugging in firewire wire. Once plugged in, turn the computer on first, then turn the camera on. I've tried this but my macbook is not recognizing any external plug in.
I downloaded the Canon Vixia software but it keeps giving me this error message: No camera found.
I've searched the interwebs for different solutions but I'm at a loss as to what I should do. Also, is there a way of importing the footage directly to Final Cut Pro X?
    My macbook specs are:
    2.6 GHz intel core i7 v10.8.
If anyone can give me specific, step-by-step instructions, I would be so grateful!

    That camera shoots AVCHD.
Are you using Log & Transfer to access the footage?
Can you see the camera's storage in the Finder?

  • Capturing from my canon vixia HV40 was working, now it doesnt ?

So i've been using final cut pro 7 for a while with my canon vixia hv40 capturing my minidv footage trough a firewire cable. It was all working properly till i updated my Itunes (10) and some software updates. Now, final cut pro doesn't recognize my camera, it says when i open the program Unable to locate the following external devices : apple firewire NTSC (720x480). My setting are still the same on my camera and on final cut pro. For my Video and audio settings everything is set at DV-NTSC 48 kHz . I've deleted my preferences for the program and tried to create another user to rerun final cut but nothing works. I have a video project due in 2 weeks could somebody help me ????

So david , what you are telling me is that Itunes did affect FCP ?
Did it happen to other people ?
Just want a confirmation before i do the change.
Also, i though HDV format wasn't possible on Minidv cassette ( i can be wrong ).

  • Canon Vixia HV40 & FCE

Hi, I'm new here on this board. I'm a student filmmaker and have been using FCE for a few years now. I just gotten a brand new Canon Vixia HV40 for Christmas to help me achieve HD in 24p for my films which looks amazing on my camera.
But I have a problem. When I capture/import the footage, the audio goes out of sync from the footage. On the camera it looks normal, but when importing, it's totally off.
I've been hearing about that I need to upgrade into FCP so I can change my settings to upload it in the right format. Is there any other way to upload 24p from this camera into FCE instead of spending on FCP? I need help! Please help me!
    Thank you.

    Dustin,
1 - If the audio drifts out of sync over time, the first thing to look at is your audio settings. Most camcorders default to 12-bit audio; hopefully you changed it to 16-bit before filming. (16-bit is aka 48KHz)
The audio setting of your recorded video has to match the audio setting of the Easy Setup you use when you capture the video and the sequence settings of the sequence you put the video into, preferably all are 16 bit/48KHz. If the audio properties do not match, the audio will go out of sync as the video plays.
2 - FCExpress does not support 24p. Only 60i, 50i and 720p30. There are some tricks for doing 60p but if you really want to do native 24p then FCStudio is what you will need.
You can import the 24p material into FCE, as you found out, however you will be fitting it into a 30fps sequence (actually 29.97 fps). Motion won't look very good.
3 - The Canon HV40 also supports a 24p-inside-60i mode. Have you tried that?

I have the Canon HV20 which is excellent and compatible.
The HV30 was virtually identical so I should imagine the HV40 is also pretty similar.
Take a look at this review. The same site also has reviews of the HV20 and HV30 if you want to see the differences.

How do I import video from my canon vixia hv 40 into imovie?

First decide which editing program you intend to use; iMovie, FCE, FCP, Adobe Premier, etc. Read the user's manual or Help files for your chosen application to determine the steps needed: the procedure will vary somewhat from application to application.
Next, with the camera and the computer off, connect the Firewire cable to both units, then power up. Set the camera to VTR (play) mode. Open your editing program and follow the instructions provided in the Help files for capturing DV footage from tape.
Do NOT expect the camera to mount on your desktop as if it were a hard drive or optical disc.

  • Canon Vixia HV40 "NO COMMUNICATION" with FCP

I just bought the Canon Vixia HV 40. FCP will not recognize it. Previously I had the Canon ZR500 and I had no problems with FCP.
I have an aluminum iMac. Software 10.5.8. 4G of memory. Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
    I have FCP Studio 2.
I'm connecting via Firewire. Any ideas what the problem is?

The best thing to do is shut down your computer then
1: turn on your camcorder (make sure it's in play mode)
2: turn on your scratch discs
    3: start your computer
    4: start final cut
    That usually does it

  • Any experience with Canon Vixia HV40?

I'm thinking of buying this camera to use with FCP. Anyone have any info they would like to share? Wondering if it works well with FCP.

The problem is that HDV, like DV is coming to the end of its life-span.
The overwhelming number of cameras sold are to the point and shoot photographers who are not usually interested in any form of editing.
As such, 95% of all new cameras are DVD, Hard Disk or Flash Memory. In another couple of years there will be no consumer DV/HDV cameras produced.
It is unlikely that the HV40 will ever be reviewed as there is no future in it. Furthermore, when the HV30 was introduced, it was a laughing stock amongst reviewers as it was the same as the HV20 apart from the colour scheme and an enlarged zoom lever. Reviewers don't want to spend time testing yet another virtually identical model.
If you want the web it will be fine, but many people who wanted to produce hi-def DVDs discovered that it was a complex and very expensive process and generally not worth the effort.
With regard to adverse comments from users, I would suggest that many people do not read the manuals, they often do not treat cameras properly and some downright misuse them, so I would view criticisms with a large amount of scepticism.
It wouldn't be the first time that I had heard people complaining of cameras not working properly after they have been lying around on a sandy beach and liberally splashed with sea water! (They don't usually mention the sand and the briny).

  • I have a Canon Vixia HV40 camcorder.

I want to transfer the digital video tapes it produces to DVD using an iMac. Do I need some kind o patch to do that?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Goldbtik29!
    Thank you for posting.
You can transfer the video recorded with your HV40 to your computer by connecting the camcorder to your computer using a DV cable.  The DV cable connects to the HDV/DV terminal on the camcorder, then to an IEEE1394 port on the computer.  Then, set the camcorder to the playback mode.
You will need to use video editing software to bring the video over, process it how you want, then record that to another media format, like a DVD.

  • Canon Vixia HV40

I am using premiere pro CS3 on Windows XP professional.
I have difficulty capturing from tapes. First of all this camcorder is not recognized. Sometimes no capturing is possible, sometimes it does capture but the capture preview pane is totally black, the clips though seem to be correct.
Is there a way to correct this problem?
    Thanks to all

PR comes with all the codec and other stuff required to handle HDV efficiently. No plug-ins required, but...
    as you were told when you want smart rendering, that is something PR does not do. It may be that the MainConcept plug-in can do that. I don't know, because;
    1. I have in the past had some negative experiences with the MainConcept plug-ins and returned them.
    2. Even though their prices have dropped, I still consider it pricey.
    3. On my system I do not miss smart rendering.
Visit their website and have a look for yourself, but I repeat, it is not needed.

  • Trouble connecting Canon Vixia HV 40 over Firewire, should I use FW800?

iMovie won't recognize my Canon Vixia HV40 using my standard firewire 400 port (6-pin). I saw another thread discussing this issue indicating that this may be due to other devices on the firewire chain, so I'll try the direct connection, but it's a nuisance since I store all my digital media on my Firewire drives.
But my iMac also has a Firewire 800 port (4-pin), that I don't use. Does anyone have a perspective on using the Firewire 800 port?
    Thanks,
    Eric

As noted in other posts, Canon recommends that the camcorder be the only device connected to the Firewire port, and that it is powered with an adaptor rather than battery. Presumably, these condition are met by having only the camcorder plugged into the firewire 800 port but other devices plugged into the firewire 400 ports (although I did try with them disconnected as well). That takes care of getting the camera recognized, but with iMovie 9, my iMac did not have the resources to pull more than 10 minutes of in full HD video. However, iMovie 6 did import the 1080i HD video in real time - I have not checked to see if there are any differences in the quality of HD video between iMovie 6 and iMovie 9, but my immediate need was to get the movies (game films) onto DVD asap, and iMovie 6 helped me do that.
