Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio, but when i capture it turns to widescreen format

I shot my footage in standard 4:3 aspect ratio, and when i import it the clip looks fine, but when i drag it to the timeline it goes into widescreen format, and i can't figure out why it is doing this. If i select the clip from my browser window and play it in my viewer window it plays fine in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but when i drag it to the timeline it goes to wide screen and it stays that way. Please help

Sounds like your sequence settings are off. If you hit command>0 (zero) you should be able to change them. One way to know they are off for sure is if when you drag your clip to the timeline you get the red line above it meaning it needs rendering. You should never have to render if your sequence settings are right.
In sequence settings make sure all your settings match the format of you clip. Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio, Editing Timebase, and compressor. That should do it.
You could also just use the Easy Setup to change the whole project to match DV.

YOU can't fix it.  But you can bring it in to Apple for an out of warranty replacement for $199.

  • I can not get itunes match to work with my ipad.  I am subscribed but when i go to turn it on it keeps telling me that i am not subscribed.  how do i fix this?

I subscribed to itunes match. I have it working on my iphone but can't get it to work on my ipad.  I did the same exact steps that I did for my iphone but when i try to turn it on it keeps telling me I am not subscribed and to subscribe through itunes on my PC.  I've already paid and subscribed to iTunes match and do not know why I keep getting this error message.  When I am in itunes on my PC I can see that my ipad is not authorized with that account and do not know if that is the problem.  If so how do I authorize my ipad?  I've used the store drop down box and choose authorize this computer but it keeps trying to authorize my PC and not my ipad.  I am running the most current version of the ipad and itunes.

    - Charge the iPod for half an hour.  Then reset the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - if still not working, connect to your computer. If iTunes sees the iPod, restore the iPod.
    - If still problem, place the iPod in recovery mode and then try to restore the iPod.  For recovery mod see:

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Aspect Ratio Problems when Copying IMovie Clips

I am a relatively new user of Imovie. I copied a series of clips from a second movie and pasted them onto the end of my first movie. I shot the video for both movies with a video camera set up for 16:9. Normally my movies display at a standard aspect ratio on my computer but are stretched to the proper 16:9 ratio when I play the movie or DVD on my TV. When I copied these movie clips from the second movie, they pasted as letterboxed clips onto the first movie. When I play the movie and corresponding DVD on my HDTV, I still have the letterboxed top and bottom bars on the clips that I pasted from the second movie into the first movie.
I am looking for any suggestions on how to fix my movie to get a consistent aspect ratio throughout the movie and get rid of the letterboxing.
    Thanks for the help.
    Tom

    Thank you for your answer.
Is there any way fix this or do I need to go all the way back and re-import the video from tape?
Also, when you mention pillarboxing, that means to me the black borders on the right and left side. I am getting letterboxing on the top and bottom of the picture.
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem.  There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out.  Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

  • Aspect ratio issue when watching 16'9 idvd created DVDs on regular players

I am having problems with the aspect ratio of any DVDs that I burn in iDVD as 16'9 - The original video is 16'9 and edited as such in FCP, then exported with current settings selected and then in iDVD I select a widescreen project - preview of the project is fine and when the DVD is done it plays with the correct aspect ratio if I watch on the computer's internal DVD player - but my issue is when I watch on any regular DVD player (on a widescreen tv of course) all the video looks tall and skinny, including the menu.  The only way I found to get the video to look like it's natural proportion is to switch the settings to 4'3 on the DVD player, then it creates almost a "super-widescreen" look where there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen.  On the otherhand, when i used to shoot in 4'3 and create DVDs as 4'3 projects, I NEVER had this problem when watching on a regular DVD player on widescreen TV!  It would take up the whole screen and look normal (I know it must stretch it to fit, but it wasn't noticable).  I thought creating a 16'9 video I should be able to watch on a widescreen TV and it should take up the whole screen and look normal.  Please help!

No, that is not the way it should work. This may help:

  • Aspect Ratio issue when replacing a clip in Premiere CS6 with an After Effects CS6 Composition

Please assist! When I attempt to right click on a clip in my Premiere timeline and replace it with an After Effects composition, I can do so, but problems ensue.
After Effects will start up, but the composition will be in 4:3, even though the Premiere project and clip that I'm altering were both 16:9.
I was able to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 in After Effects and then edit what I wanted, but an hour later when I had finsihed, saved, and gone back to Premiere, it had smushed the replaced clip into 4:3 within Premiere.
    So to reitterate:
When I replace a clip in Premiere with an AE comp, AE opens in 4:3.
I can change the AE comp to 16:9, but when I save and go back to Premiere, it has smushed the AE comp down to 4:3.
What can I do to stop this?

If you right click on the clip in the Project panel, then select Modify / Interpret Footage you will see a Pixel Aspect Ratio.
    What does it say?
If it says 0.9091 then change it to 1.2121
If it says something else, come back and let me know. I will then have a different answer for you.
Also, what is the frame size of the video.

  • I have a project in FCP that is a 2:1 aspect ratio. When I send to compressor to author a DVD I lose the aspect ratio and the image fills the 16x9 frame. How do I preserve the original ratio thru compressor?

    Aspect ratio lost in compressor

Hi Tom, thanks so much for answering. I totally get the need to letterbox but my issue is, how do I get the best quality in letterbox format?
Should I export it thru QT Conversion or just Export to Quicktime Movie? I exported as a self contained movie to keep the quality but when I send it thru the MPEG-2 compressor for DVD it fills the 16x9 frame without letterbox.
How would I modify the MPEG-2 preset to give me the letterbox in the MPEG-2?
I've been playing around but haven't hit the jackpot yet.
If there's any info you have, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much
    James

  • Aspect ratio problems when exporting from FCP and creating DVDs

    Hi there
Can anyone help? I'm using FCP to edit material shot using a Sony z1 in SD 16:9 mode. My media displayed correctly in FCP with the 'anamorphic' option ticked in the browser.
I then exported my short films as QuickTime movies and created a DVD in iDVD using those video assets.
When I then viewed the films on a widescreen tv, the films did not display at the correct aspect ratio. They were horizontally elongated, as though they had been stretched twice over, so that objects, people and text appeared fatter than they should.
Can anyone let me know whether there are any settings I could change in either FCP or iDVD to stop this happening?
    Many thanks!
    Jacqui

  • Aspect ratio changes when importing to FCE 4.0.1

I'm hoping someone with a better understanding of FCE will be able to help...
I have footage shot in 1920x1080 (16:9) format. I have the sequence set to any of the available 1920x1080 (16:9) formats via Easy Setup. Create a new Sequence with the correct settings. However when importing the footage into FCE it converts to a 1440x1080 (4:3) aspect ratio... This I understand is the anamorphic format of 4:3. What am I supposed to do so that when importing, the original format is not altered.

I do know what 4:3 is and what 16:9 is. First, understand that there is no HD format, none, that is 4:3. They are all widescreen. 1440 is a way of compressing the media to use a limited data rate more efficiently by applying it to a smaller frame size while maintaining the standard display size. The material is displayed at full widescreen. If you have 1440 material in FCE you have probably noticed that the canvas is not 4:3. The canvas is widescreen. That's the display size.
Actually HDV's native format is not 1920. The native format agreed by the HDV consortium is 1440x1080 for 1080i material. That's the compression size. The display size is 1920. HDV is normally shot and compressed to 1440x1080 in camera. That's the native size of the frame.
The HV20 is an HDV camera. The CX12 is not. It's an AVCHD camera. That's a different format. They are not the same, and they compress media in entirely different ways. HDV is an older format that compresses to MPEG-2. AVCHD uses H.264 in MPEG-4. Neither of them are production formats. They are both compression formats that were designed for delivery, compressing group of frames. In their original format they are almost impossible to edit, which is why FCE and other applications convert the media to a production format that uses individual frame compression so you can edit exact frames. HDV is either 1280x720 or 1440x1080 (displayed as 1920). AVCHD is either 1440x1080 or 1920x1080, both displayed as 1920x1080. You can also have 1280x720 AVCHD, though I don't know any camera that actually shoots that excellent format.
"The footage resides on my computer." Perhaps you'd bother telling us how you got it into your computer. What application did you use? Every application will handle the ingest of this media in a different way, consequently it may not work properly with this application. I assumed you used the application this forum is about to bring this material into your computer. Did you, or did you ingest it with something else? How did you get it into the computer for you to import in FCE? Once again the correct size for this material is very likely 1440x1080. That's the native size for HDV sequences that are 1080. In 4.0.1 you can have sequences that are 1920x1080. These are designed to accommodate that AVCHD material shot at 1920x1080. Not all AVCHD material is in that size, and frankly there is no real advantage to it, and probably some disadvantages as the same data rate has to be used for a largely frame size.
All this said, I'm not sure what you're hoping and waiting for.

  • Photo aspect ratio incorrect when "placing" into Muse

    Hello all,
I'm attempting to place an image into an Adobe Muse page I'm building but when I go to File > Place, select my image and click where I want it on the page, the image places at a ratio much smaller than what I originally exported as.  When I stretch it to the original aspect ratio I exported it as, Muse tells me I need to resample it because I've stretched it larger than the original.  What am I doing wrong?!
    1. I export my image from Photoshop using the "Save for Web" and export the jpeg at my desired ratio: 670 x 290.
    2. I go to File > Place in Adobe Muse and click on the page but the image places at 335 x 145?
You'll notice the wireframe box on the page.  That's the size I want the picture to be and when I select the wireframe box, Muse says it's 670 x 290.  That's how I originally figured out what ratio I wanted to use for my image.
This seems to happen with any image I "place" into Muse.  Thanks in advance for any help you all can offer!

When you create a new site, you can choose the HiDPI option for high resolution output. This causes, that all images are placed in half of their size in order to obtain an adequate resolution on high res monitors. If you scale these images to their original size, they don't meet the requirements of HiDPI any more and you get the upsample warning. You can control this behaviour in "site properties". Just look here:
Adobe Muse Help | Creating High Resolution websites
Edit: A look at your screenshots confirms, that you have switched on the HiDPI option: Behind the assets you can see the label "2x".

  • Aspect ratio distortion when exporting iMovie '08 xml to FCE 4

Hi, I'm working on a small piece which I started in iMovie '08. Now that I have selected all the content for the piece I have attempted to "share" as Final Cut XML. However, when I import that file into FCE 4 the aspect ratio is all out of whack. Does anyone have suggestions about how to resolve, or place to look?
Thanks in advance for the help!
