Shoudl I buy Appletv or mac mini to store and run my purchased dvd's and bluray's

I am setting up a new home theater and wonder if i should buy an appleTV or a mac mini to house and access all of the current and future DVD's and Bluray movies that i currently own as well as those purchase from itunes and amazon. Does anyone have an opinion? I am considering also an a/v receiver with airport features.

Keep in mind the ATV is not designed to store any content, there is virtually no storage on the device at all.
Also, investigate if the av receivers with AirPlay built in actually support video, from what I've seen they only support audio over AirPlay.
The ATV is definitely the least expensive option, but the Mac Mini may provide more flexibility. The only issue may be ease of use with the mini connected directly to the tv. I do not have a mini so I cannot comment on how that would function.
If you're looking to save some cash, an ATV and a Chromecast would be the least expensive option.

I've not seen it at stores, but each store has its own space restrictions, which may affect whether or not it is stocked. Call your store and ask. The number for Apple's own retail store is on http://www.apple.com/retail/ and the extension is usually 5 to speak to a real person. If you get AppleCare, you have been redirected off the store's phone system.

The license you have only covers one computer, and the install disks from one type of Mac will not work on another type. You need to buy another copy of Snow Leopard.

Mac mini loses mouse and keyboard after sleep.

Hi Everyone:
I recently bought my Mom one of the new Mac mini (I'm a PowerBook user myself), and she's running into some puzzling problems which, while minor, are sufficiently annoying as to confuse poor old Mom.
The system egnrally runs fine after you turn it on, until it goes to sleep. After some undefined period in sleep mode, the Mac mini appears to "lose" the USB keyboard and mouse which is plugged into it. If you press a mouse button or a keyboard key a few minutes within the system going to sleep, the system will wake up and both will work. If you wait a longer period of time (say, 20 minutes or longer, although I haven't sat and timed it at all), pressing any key or mouse button does nothing, and you have to wake it from sleep by using the power button. Once awake, the keyboard and mouse do nothing. The only way to get them back is to unplug both of them (the mouse is chained through the keyboard as the other Mac mini USB slot is used by Mom's UPS), and plug them back in so the Mac mini can re-detect them on the bus, after which everything is happy again until the system has been asleep for too long.
Has anyone experienced this? Both the mouse and keyboard are genuine IBM (as in: made by International Business Machines), although are several years old (I bought them when I worked for IBM, and IIRC they were amongst the first models of USB keyboards and mice that IBM offered, if not the first).
In the interm, I've lent Mom my Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, which has (as you would expect) worked flawlessly. This problem may "solve" itself -- I'm hoping to take Mom out later this week to buy her own Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard at the Apple Store.
The other problem, however, isn't as easy (or necessarily as cheap) to fix. Again after the system has been asleep for some time, it often (but not always) changing the resolution of the monitor when it wakes up. I have the mini set to use a reasonable 1024*768, but sometimes when it awakes it will suddenly be set to 800*600 or 832*624. Sure, you can change it back, but that's major surgury for Mom (and I'm moving cross-country next week, and won't be able to just "drop by" to fix system problems). The monitor is an Ambra SVGA model (Ambra was a brand-name of inexpensive PCs that IBM sold some years ago), and never had any such problems on her last (Intel-based) system the mini is replacing.
The whole purpose of the Mac mini is to "bring your own" Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor -- but in our case the keyboard and mouse don't work at all after sleep, and the monitors resolution gets dynamically changed after sleep. Has anyone else encountered this situations, or any solutions? TIA!

I've seen quite a few posts in this regard with non-Apple mice and keyboard.
Well, the mouse and keyboard are quite old -- it could be that they're having a problem dealing with identifying themselves on the USB bus during sleep, or aren't identifying themselves fast enough at wake time. I'll just have to replace them I guess.
I've never seen a sleep resolution switching problem except on a VGA adapter to DVI connection to an old tube monitor.
Well, this is a pretty vanilla CRT monitor circa about 1999, so yeah -- it could once again be an age issue, and the fact that there is a DVI -> VGA adapter involved in the middle.
For worrying about fixing Mom's Mac, setup her remote VNC software (Apple Remote Desktop Client) and use the free Chicken of the VNC admin program.
I am quite familiar with VNC. As much admin as possible will be done by SSH, but I will have VNC in place before I leave. The big problem is going to be the fact that I'm going to be several timezones (and over 4000 km) away, so I won't necessarily be available at a moments notice to help her with this sort of thing.
The CRT issue we might just have to deal with by having her always run it at 800*600 (I don't think she'd really notice the difference, and as her eyes aren't what they once used to be, the slight size increase may be more confortable for her in the long run) until such time they she can afford to buy a nicer display (I did my duty as a son buying her the Mac mini and an iSight camera -- she has to take care of the rest ).

Hi, I am looking to switch over to Mac for non-professional photo editing and video editing. I have been looking at the mac mini basic model and upgrading the ram to 16gb. Is this a good option or is it worth waiting and saving up for the basic Imac. How does photoshop and imovie run on the mac mini?

You would definitely need 16GB of RAM and you can save some money buying the additional RAM from Other World Computing or Crucial. Photoshop is very RAM hungry, but perhaps even more hungry for CPU resources. If you are going to be doing a lot of Photoshopping I would go for a top of the line mini with the 2.6GHz quad core i7 processor and a Fusion drive. The fusion drive will yield disk I/O performance close to that of a full solid state drive (SSD) and that can be helpful with Photoshop as well. I have done some iMovie work on my fully loaded mini and I have been very pleased with the rendering speed and that is what seems to take the longest time.
If you already have a good monitor, that you like the fully tricked out mini would be a good buy for you. If you are going to buy an Apple monitor in addition to the mini, the price defference between that and a high end iMac will only be few hundred dollars and the iMac will be faster. I switched from iMacs to the mini because I bought a new iMac I always had to buy both the monitor and the processor. WIth the mini I only have to replace/upgrade one or the other.
Given you can no longer purchase Adobe products, they are available as rental only tools, you might want to consider some of the less expensive non-Adobe alternatives that are available on the Mac. You may find one of those that will give you the results you want and you can purchase for a fraction of what a year's rent of Photoshop will cost you some are even free. On the other hand Photoshop is still the standard by which all others are compared.

Mac Mini Upgrade Ram and HDD Drive

Hey there guys, I am going to buy a new mac mini 2.0 Ghz next month. My question is this that on the apple support site it says that if I upgrade the RAM myself or hard disk and I damage any component of the hardware my warranty is void.
My question is this that, If I buy a 320GB Western Digital Sata drive put it in and a 4GB(2Gb x 2) 1066mhz DDR 3 Ram Modules, Will that void my apple warranty, I am planning to get an Apple Care plan to make it a total of 3 years warranty. So where Do I stand? meaning that I don't mind if the new hard disk and ram that I buy myself is not covered in the warranty as I will have individual warranties from the respective companies.
But still does it means that, everything is covered Minus the hard disk and ram that i Individually buy.. everything else would still be covered for the 1 year initial warranty and then 2 year for apple care protection plan. does it mean that?
Is there anyway I don't spoil my warranty? I really cant afford to buy the memory and hard disk from apple, since its too expensive. I am looking forward to get the Mac Mini base line unit, 2.0 Ghz with 1 gb of ram 120gb hdd.

As far as I can see anywhere in Apple documentation there are no officially user-serviceable part in the mini (anyone have a link to the contrary?).
But, in the U.S. at least, warranty law seems to be in consumers' favor these days, and unless you specifically break something with your unauthorized upgrade, Apple still has to honor the warranty.
The mini manual in fact says:
"If you open your Mac mini or install items, you risk damaging your equipment,
and *such damage* isn’t covered by the limited warranty on your Mac mini."
Your damage isn't covered, not the warranty is voided.
But, NEVER EVER send any product in with a user upgrade even if upgrades are officially allowed -- because it's really common to just be sent back a swap instead of your machine. With the mini, you'll want to observe that doubly so, just to eliminate the possibility of them complaining about your upgrade. Keep the original parts, and put them back in if you ever need service.
For this Apple Store situation, the only thing he could legitimately charge you for is a "labor charge" for the act of having to remove your RAM *for testing the other problem*. That should be like $30 not $300, and you should get your custom RAM back in a little baggy. Tricking you into buying Apple RAM to "solve" your other warranty problem, or as a condition of getting warranty service, is probably fraud.
Nonetheless -- definitely not a good idea to bring in the mini with the custom RAM in the first place...
Note that there are some gray areas as to damage -- for example if you put in a processor upgrade (in the older minis with processor sockets) and that ran much hotter, Apple could legitimately claim the heat damaged some other part that failed.

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

How do I pair my new Mac mini (mid 2011) and white Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003)?

I just bought a new Mac mini (mid 2011) and can not set it up via my Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003). I'm disheartened but not surprised that my Bluetooth 4.0 Mac isn't backwards-compatible with my Bluetooth 1.0 keyboard. But I can't find any documentation confirming the fact that my non-paired, but tested & perfectly functioning keyboard will not work with current Macs.
I was however, able to locate a tech support doc (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4112) that mentions my Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003) is not compatible with iOS devices. (Which is not critical because iOS provides a non-physical keyboard. Aside, it would be lovely were Apple to add a non-physical keyboard to Mac OS X, if only so new desktop owners can continue to set up their Macs in a pinch.)

I just bought a new mini mac (lion 2011) with a wireless keyboard. I could not get the mac to recognise the keyboard. Spent several hours back with the Genius team who replaced keyboard and mac but did not get anywhere. They gave me a wired keyboard, was able to configure the mac and then it recognised the wireless keyboard.

So I am using mac mini mid 2011 and according to this line, I may not use it and need mac 2012, right? but why air drop is showing here on my mac mini is due to fact that transfer between 2 mac computers is possible if one is even of less than 2012 make.

Reboot holding down the Command and R keys. This will get you in to the Recovery partition. From there you can reinstall the entire OS. Please note, Server.app will not be included in the reinstall. You will need to log into your App store account to download it.

I'm thinking that you have a > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications because the 2010 model's only have Core 2 Duo processors and the 2011 had the first i5 processor.
2 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for Mountain Lion, but it's hardly enough to really enjoy doing anything else.

The power button for the Trackpad is on the right hand end of the battery case. Press that button to initiate the pairing process. On the top of the Trackpad just above the power button is a tiny green light (you probably cannot see it unless it is lighted). That light will indicate ehther or not the Trackpad is discoverable. If the Trackpad has discoverable the green light will blink on and off. If it does not pair within 3 minutes you will have to press the power button again to re-initiate the pairing process. Once your Trackpad has paired, you can just leave it on and it will pair automatically when you reboot your Mac.
If you are having problems pairing, try turning off any other Bluetooth devices within 30 or so feet of your Mac mini. That includes other Computers, iPhones, iPads, etc. that may be in the area. Once your Trackpad has pairedwith your mini, you don't have to be concerned about other Bluetooth devices.
One other hint, I find that although the Wireless Trackpad does not eat batteries as fast as the Magic Mouse it still uses more than the Wireless Keyboard. It is a good idea to keep a supply of AA batteries around. I have used Apple's Rechargable batteries, but found they did not last that long before needing to be recharged. I have had the best battery life from Duracell Quantum batteries.

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem. If you boot into Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files. We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing. Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.
