Should 10.4.6 upgrade double size of Library Files?

I just installed the combo updater to 10.4.6, and was surprised on the usage of hard drive space (I am getting close to my 75gb max, so I pay attention.)
I use carbon copy cloner, so I looked at the directory structure of my pre-update clone disk, and learned the major difference is in the Library Folder. In 10.4.5 it was at 5.34gb and in 10.4.6 it is 9.15gb.
Is this normal? Any thoughts as to why this update is so heavy?
(All my other folders are +/- 100mb of the same size as on the clone disk with the old os x version.)
thanks
15 G4 powerbook 1.5ghz, 2gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

just to update everyone, I've spent today wiping my hard drive, and then rolling back to my good install of 10.4.5 from CCC (so no ILife06, yet). I also went thru with a number of tools to identify any duplicate files or other things I don't really need (i.e. the 64 college basketball games downloaded from Itunes last month.)
Reinstalled the 10.4.6 combo updater tonight, and noticed that this time it chimed and restarted 2X ! And the disk optimization process obviously worked because I ended up with +500mb more space than I started with, despite the warning from the installer that it needs 450mb of disk space. And the Library is stable at 5.3gb.
More to follow when I try the install of Ilife 06 again in few days.

  • Quicktime 7.0.4 Double Size / Half Size scale effect is gone

Before updating from Quicktime 7.0.3 and OS X 10.4.3, Quicktime Player used to do a zoom/scale effect when I hit "View > Double Size" or "View > Half Size". You see the window actually grow or shrtink to the new size. Now it just jumps directly to the new size since updating.
I have an identical PowerMac G5 running 10.3.9, and I still get the effect after upgrading to Quicktime 7.0.4.
Was it something in the OS X update, or did something go wrong in my install? I know it sounds like a silly thing to care about, but I am having other Quicktime issues as well (Safari crashes when a Quicktime video is present on a web page).
Anything I can do to fix this? I repaired permissions, tried the Combo Updater, rolled back to Quicktime 7.0.1... same problems. Anything else I can try or delete?

iDVD says the film length would be 151 minutes.
The size of the blank DVD should be rather 240 minutes....!
PS: Danke, ich finde es auch schön endlich bei Apple angekommen zu sein!

  • Double size of photo when rotating

I have noticed that when I rotate a photo it doubles in size. I understand this is to keep the original file but it causes me big problems when I try to upload photos to the Internet because it takes twice as long. Is there a way I can get iPhoto to automatically delete the original for me when I rotate or does anyone know if there is some other way around this?

    Ian Whitfield
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
I have noticed that when I rotate a photo it doubles in size.
rotating does not increase the size of a photo - check in the information window before you rotate the photo and after you rotate it- the rotated version will be pretty much the same as it was before rotation
Is there a way I can get iPhoto to automatically delete the original for me when I rotate
No - one basic design feature of iPhoto is always retaining the original and always giving you the ability to revert to it
The correct way to have smaller photos for uploading is to export the photos to a desktop folder and set the size of the exported JPEGs during the export process. This also is very important to protect your iPhoto library from damage - you should never be doing things inside your iPhoto library from the finder or with programs other than iPhoto (and iPhoto aware programs like iPhoto library manager)

  • HT3669 I only have a HP printer and why I need to install a file for all the HP printers drivers 590MB??? if normally the size of my file should be 5MB.  some one could me help to avoid installation of 590MB for my new mountain lion software???

    Hi guys..!!
I would like to know if someone could help on this:
I just have a HP printer (HP Designjet 100) and for some reason I need to install a file for all the HP printers drivers in total 590MB to be able to use my printer in my mountain lion???
If normally the size of my files in the for previous software was more or less 5MB why now i need to install 590?
Some one could help me how to avoid installation of 590MB for my new mountain lion software???
    Thanks

If you go to http://support.apple.com/downloads and locate the HP Printer Drivers installer, you will find that it is 473.4 MB (for version 2.11). If you install this, it will install the full set of drivers for every model of HP printer that is supported by the drivers distributed through Apple. The disk space occupied once installed will probably be larger than the download, since the downloaded file is compressed.
On the other hand, if you have an HP printer connected and you use Software Update (or the Update tab in App Store), that should offer you a much smaller set of HP drivers, which are only applicable to your printer (and possibly a few similar ones). These updates are typically only tens of megabytes rather than hundreds of megabytes.
If Software Update doesn't offer you any HP drivers then it either thinks you have the latest drivers installed already, or the printer model is not supported by the drivers available from Apple.
This article lists all of the printer models for which Apple distributes the driver:

  • What size should my .itl library file be for 7000 tracks?

This will seen like a very strange question but how large should an .itl library file be? The reason that I ask is that I'm trying to get my iTunes files back in place on a new PC & I find that I have 2 old .itl files & don't know which one to import.
I would have expected that the most recently dated one would be the one to use but Windows tells me that the file size is considerable smaller than the old one.
I expect that there has has to be some sort of direct relationship between the number of tracks in the library & the file size of your library. My larger file is said to be 11,300kb & if I recall correctly I have about 7000 tracks in the library. Does that seem correct?
Is it possible to try to add the the second newer library to the first one should as I expect install the larger one. Would this cause problems like duplicates?

+I expect that there has has to be some sort of direct relationship between the number of tracks in the library & the file size of your library.+
There probably is, but I'm not sure how to account for podcasts, audiobooks, movies, and TV shows.
My itl file on v9.02 is 10.7MB and I have around 30K music tracks.
v7 itl files were much bigger. Apple did some major overhaul when they released v8 and shrunk the itl file size.
+I find that I have 2 old .itl files & don't know which one to import.+
There is no way to "import" an ITL file. You can use a shift-start of itunes to look at each itl file and see which one is the most complete.
Press *AND HOLD* the shift key while starting itunes until you see the option to choose a library. Browse to whichever itl file you want ot look at.
iTunes will always use the last itl file it opened, unless you do another shift-start.

  • TS1292 I have a new macbook pro bought around a month ago so either the end of June or the beginning of July I know I should have a free upgrade to Snow Lion how do I get it

I should have a free upgrade to Snow Lion since the Macbookpro is around a month old now I have tried to upgrade to Snow Lion from the App store but it wants me to buy it . How do I get the free upgrade?

iWork! But Office 2008 or 2011 will run fine on Lion
Lion is awesome, and if you purchased your MacBook Pro since June 6th, go here to get a free copy> http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

  • My macbook is OSX 10.6.8, should I try to upgrade it or just get a new mac?

My macbook is OSX 10.6.8, should I try to upgrade it or get a new macbook?

Depends on how old it is and if it is able to do what you need it to do. Apple does not make a MacBook any longer. There are just 13" and 15" MacBook Pros.
If you need to upgrade OS X, then find out if your model can be upgraded past Snow Leopard. Note that Lion and later do not support any PPC-only software because the Rosetta emulator no longer works after Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Why should I pay for upgrade to CS6 twice?

    Dear Adobe,
I upgraded from photoshop CS3 to Photoshop CS5 last November as you said we will be not able to upgrade from CS3 to CS6 directly anymore. And now, you changed your mind and users are still able to upgrade from older versions. If I would wait couple of months like others I would pay only once. Please, would you try to explain your business strategy? How should we trust you are not going to change your mind and rules every month?
    Thank you for your explanation.
    Kind regards,
    Filip Zamorsky

And...Add my name to the list. I began another thread but I was told about this one. It's the same story as you all, I'm just not going to be ignored by customer service. Adobe caused the problem, Adobe should fix it.
Has anybody found a magic way to get customer service help? I have been waiting since last Tuesday for my problem to be resolved and I've been getting absolutely no understanding or willingness to take ownership of my problem.  I have chatted online with 8 different people. Each time making painstaking attemts to explain the situation as being different than the "free upgrade" window that is posted on adobe.com.
    Here is the situation.
Adobe said that we MUST upgrade to CS5 in order to upgrade to CS6.
In February, I upgraded from CS4 to CS5 based on item 1.
I went online last week to upgrade to CS6 from CS5 when I saw that I didn't have to spend the money to upgrade from CS4 to CS5 afterall.
Based on that, I feel I should be able to upgrade to CS6 without having to pay an addition $199.00.
Adobe said I had to upgrade so I did. That cost me $199.00 three months ago.
Now Adobe wants me to spend another $199.00 to get CS6.
I will not do that. I wouldn't have spent the first $199.00 if Adobe hadn't said it was necessary. It wasn't necessary afterall so I shouldn't be penalized for believing Adobe.
This is like the guy who's told he has a week to live so he gives away all of his earthly belongings. Then the doctor tells him he didn't mean it.
Now, On Wednesday, I got my request elevated to "concern group". They will contact me within 72 hours. That must be 72 business hours because I have not been concated.
So, Monday, I had to go through the entire scenerio for the umteenth time and again was assured the "concern group" would contact me withing 24 hours. I didn't believe the rep, based on my previous lack of contact and asked how I can contact the "concern group" myself so I don't have to go through this entire process again. The "concern group" is offline, no way to contact them but "I ASSURE YOU" you will hear from them withing 24 hours. Well, 48 hours later, I'm totally in a very hateful mood. I opened another chat session and rather than submitting that person on the other end to my venom, I just pasted my chat from Monday and said goodbye. Of couse, it's not going to do any good either.
I saw a message board online yesterday, and today I can't find it, where people in my same situation received their upgrade to CS6 with no addition cost.
I know it's being done but Customer service is so...aggravating that I believe it's a way to make people just give up and go away. Not this time.

    Absolutely the 8gig of Ram
i7 is only 15% faster average on high task apps, otherwise you'd not notice a difference

  • Expansion of RAID by upgrading the sizes of individual drives

First time poster to these forums... bear with me...
I have an existing Xserve RAID with a mix of 173GB and 233GB drives...
Yeah... we are running out space.
Having worked with RAIDs in Compaq/HP servers, I can upgrade the size of a RAID5 by replacing the drives one by one, wait for the new drive to be included in the RAID set after each replacement... and have a larger RAID at the end of the exercise.
My question is: Can I hot-swap a 500GB in for each drive in a 4 x 173 RAID5 and endup with 1.5TB volume at the end.
    Thanks in advance!
    Rudy
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

No can do (assuming you're using some kind of striping) - you'll have to re-build the RAID volume to do this. Although, there may be a way to use the 500 GB drives at reduced capacity (to match the old drives), but this would defeat the purpose of getting the larger drives.

When I am searching the internet and using my mouse, my screen will suddenly zoom in to about double size.  Clicking control and mousing will not return it back to where it was.  I have no idea what I am doing to cause this to happen or how to reverse it.

    Hi.
If you're using a Magic Mouse, a double tap on the mouse with one finger will zoom.
    Double tap again to unzoom.

  • What precautions should I take before upgrading to iDVD 06 (and iLife 06)?

I have read a few people's experiences on this site about problems encountered after upgrading to iLife 06. I am about to do this and wondered what how I should go about backing up my iDVD and iMovie 5 half-completed projects in case they don't work properly in version 6.
Will a half-completed iDVD 05 project seemlessly covert to iDvd 6 after installation or should I complete it in 5 before upgrading? If I should go ahead and upgrade, in case there are problems, how do I back up my projects in case I need to reinstall iLife 5 to work on them again?
    Thanks in advance

Also, I forgot to mention, I had read that not all the themes that are accessible in iDvd 5 are accessible in iDvd 6 - is this true? If so, what happens if I have used one in my half-completed projects?

  • Should I wait to upgrade InDesign and InCopy Software?

I are currently running InDesign CS4 on a MAC with OSX 10.7.3. There are 9 InCopy users all on PC's that edit over the network. Everything was working ok until I got a new computer and started running Lion. Since that time my InDesign has crash multiple times, with autosaves not always working. I was hoping to wait for CS6 which I know is coming out soon but the crashes are costing me a lot of time.  My question(s) are:
Is anyone else having this troupble and if so what have they done?
Should I go ahead and upgrade now instead of waiting for CS6 as I had planned?  Will that solve this problem?
Thank you for your answers in advance.

I moved the document off the server to my desktop and so far no crashes. If I have another I will post. Thank you!

  • OBPM 10gR3 Double Size Tables

    Hi,
    I'm using Oracle BPM Studio 10g R3.
My principal bpmObject has 37 fields and 10 methods or so, and only one presentation.
When I try to drag a new table into the presentation (2 columns and 3 rows), it creates a new table that have the double size (4 columns, 6 rows). It happens with all the new tables I try to create.
    Somebody know why?
    Thanks

    Yes it is recurring.
I tried in new objects and in new or imported projects.
The problem is that the remaining cells are referenced to the originals (in a "2x3" table that create a 4x6 table, cells [2][0], [0][3] and [2][3] references to [0][0]), the data in [0][0] is the same in that cells too. Obiously, the project can't start because there are multiple referenced fields.
    Thanks again
