Should a graphic designer use Iphoto for file management ?

I am a designer who is overwhelmed by too many images from different sources (scan, online, art, photos) that need to be organized by themes (animals, flowers, calligraphy, projects, etc) so I tried transferring all my ps and tif and jpg files into iphoto (hoping to avoid using bridge, which I don't like).
I noticed after I drug some them into iphoto, I reopened them in PS (drug file to the PS software Logo in dock), all the layers were had been flattened and the file went from 600 dpi to 72! EEEEK!
I am a graphic designer and need large files with layers. Is iphoto a bad way to organize images? The orginal reason I like iphoto is because you can just drag out a file, and the original remains. In bridge, the original actually MOVES OUT.
(I posted this in the wrong forum before, so this is a repeat posting)

kidquotes:
I would seriously look into a more robust DAM (digital asset management) application. The one that I use is Media Expression. It allows you to manage your folder system, move image files between folders from within the application, rename files, add metadata and write them to the files so they travel with them.
Go go The DAM Forum where professional photographers discuss the various DAM applications and their relative merits, etc. Expression Media was originally iView MediaPro and, at the time, was consdered one of the very best. EM was bought by Microsoft (ugh) but has evolved into am improved product but is more expensive.
As far as the dpi the resolution didn't change. iPhoto displays all at 72 dpi but if you were to look at the file in Photoshop it's print size would be nearly 9 times larger. It's all relative. SeeThe Myth of DPI.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Using OEM for file management

    Is anyone using OEM to manage files on their clients?
    We currently have a bunch of scripts that distribute certain files to certain systems based on system criteria, such as OS version, system "usage" (ie oracle DB, backup server) etc.
    I was looking @ OEM Deployment Procedures as something that might help with this. I didn't see a premade "file distribution" procedure, though, so I would probably have to write my own somehow.
    I'm also open to using Ops Center or some other plugin that might be more suited to this task.

    I am going to assume that you are using EM 12c. Let me know if this is not true.
    Deployment procedures (DP) is the ideal solution for this. There is no out of box DP for file transfer because it is extremely easy to create one. You have two options:
    1. transfer files from one server to another (using the file transfer step in DP)
    2. upload files to EM software library and then transfer them to different hosts (using the component and directive step in DP)

    GHz, but not necessarily dual. Apple doesn't sell dual 3.33s.
    A single 3.33 6-core should do fine and "sweet spot" (when looking, there is "4-core" build to order..,. and like everything else on the Store, why in heavens they didn't be more accurate and clear and say "single socket" and then have "dual processor configurations" 0 I guess the writers don't understand or know workstations or jargon? I say that 'cause some have trouble even finding the 6-core 3.33 choice ($1200 over stock 2.8 4-core).
    W3680 though can be found on Buy.com for $620 (was $589 at earlier date) and people are known to then sell the stock cpu $300 making it even more attractive and save $600-900 that way rather easily. Or not.
    But yes, I would send you to MPG.com site as well and read through what is on there.

    i think to bye imac for graphic design use purpose. kindly guide me. Is iMac best for me ?

    Hello artistsagar,
    The word best is always subjective.   It is all a question of your needs, your working practice, your available space; I could go on.
    A Mac (probably a 27"one) may well be perfect.  Good size screen, easily understood basic functions and a huge number of recommended programs.   Just Google Mac graphic design to see what is available.

  • Using iPhoto for a specific PP task - will it cause any issues?

    Since I've started shooting in RAW, I haven't really used iPhoto that much.
    My current process is to import using Bridge, open images in Adobe Camera Raw to edit and crop, and then open in PS Elements 6 to do final editing.
    However I don't like the crop feature in ACR... And I'm thinking of using iPhoto for cropping.
    Here is how I envision the process -
    1. Import via bridge
    2. Open and edit in ACR but do not crop
    3. Open and edit in PSE6 and save as PSD
    4. Run batch process in PSE6 to convert PSDs to JPGs
    5. Import JPGs into iPhoto and crop
    6. Export JPGs as current settings.
    The only issue that I think I will have is that iPhoto will convert the images to 72dpi and so I will need to add one more batch step to convert from 72dpi to 240 or 300 dpi.
    Are there any issues with this process change?
    Will the extra steps degrade the JPGs in any way?
    Thanks!

    1. Import via bridge
    2. Open and edit in ACR but do not crop
    3. Open and edit in PSE6 and save as PSD
    4. Run batch process in PSE6 to convert PSDs to JPGs
    I’m not sure you’ll need this step as iPhoto will work with almost all PSDs. A little trial and error will confirm.
    5. Import JPGs into iPhoto and crop
    6. Export JPGs as current settings.
    Assuming you imported as PSD then you can export as ‘Kind: JPEG’ and specify the exported dimensions, thereby avoiding your final batch conversion to 300 dpi. (Although this conversion is pretty pointless until you actually go to print a file.)
    A general comment:
    It’s a lot of effort to get a crop. Can’t you crop in Elements? Or - if not in Elements - there are lots of little editors out there with no database element that will crop. Even Preview will do this.

  • Using iPhoto for organizing digi scrapbook supplies

    I have successfully figured out how to use iPhoto for the above except in one instance. Many digi kits have some elements to use in creating the scrapbook page in Photoshop Elements 6 in png format. It appears in the kit as black on white background so you can see it. But in iPhoto it is just one black box. It doesn't matter if I select the background as black or white. Any ideas how I can put these in and be able to see what they are. Hard to pick something if you don't know what it is.

    Janet:
    Those files either are grayscale mode images or have an alpha channel both of which iPhoto doesn't support. Export those file out of iPhoto, and use an image editor to convert them to the RGB color mode or remove the alpha channel. It's more likely they are greyscale.
    Maybe an easier way to convert from grayscale to RGB would be to use my Automator workflow Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile.app to covert them. Just drag the problem files onto the application and they will be converted. You can download it from  Toad's Cellar, 2nd from top.

    I have been using IPhoto for three years.  Now I cannot print a photo because I get this message:  "There were no themes located.  Until at least one theme has been installed, this feature will be unavailable."

    You need to reinstall iPhoto.  To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the:
    HD/Library/Receipts folder (10.5 and earlier)
    or from the /var/db/receipts/  folder (10.6) .
    or from the /private/var/db/receipts folder (10.7 or later)
    Then install iPhoto from the source it came from originally.

  • How to set a root directory for file management in web application

    Is it possible to set a default root directory for file management for a web application ?
    We would upload some files and store them in the web server.
    When we write the uploaded files without any path, the files are written in the config directory into the jdeveloper embedded oc4j directory.
    When we write the uploaded with a relative path ("/somedir/filename"), the files are written in C:/somedir/filename.
    We would like that all file management with relative path into the web application refer automatically to a given root directory (for example defined in web.xml).
    Is it possible ?

    I'm using the standard upload in adf faces.
    The problem is not during upload. This is managed in a temporay directory defined in web.xml. The problem is for writing the file that was uploaded (upload give us an inputStream we have to write somewhere, eventually after unzipping).
    Here is an example of our current code.
    if (mimeType.equals("application/x-zip-compressed") |
    mimeType.equals("application/zip")) {
    File destZipFile =
    new File(rootDirectory + "/" + parametersDirectory +
    "/" + uploadedFile.getFilename());
    BufferedInputStream isZipFile =
    new BufferedInputStream(uploadedFile.getInputStream());
    FileOutputStream fosZipFile =
    new FileOutputStream(destZipFile);
    BufferedOutputStream bosZipFile =
    new BufferedOutputStream(fosZipFile, BUFFER);
    // read and write until last byte is encountered
    while ((currentByte = isZipFile.read(data, 0, BUFFER)) !=
    -1) {
    bosZipFile.write(data, 0, currentByte);

  • Using iPhoto for presentation

    Hi all,
    I want to be able to show photos of art work from my iPhoto in a presentation. People tell me I need to buy Power Point but do I really need to? I want to use my computer to plug into what ever type of projection system is available and manually move from one photo to another. No music, no fancy Ken Burns type effects. I'm not even sure what type of projection connection is standard in the industry. Would I need Power Point to connect to most US University projection systems or can I just sent up a folder in iPhoto and manually move from photo to photo. Just what the ehck will I be plugging into that gets me from my computer to a projection screen in a lecture hall anyway?
    thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No you don't need PowerPoint. My wife teaches at the local college and uses iPhoto as her presentation application.
    You'll need to set up an iPhoto album for the presentation. If you have a laptop that includes the apple remote you can use it to advance, pause and go back.
    Here's how I have it set up for her:
    1 - select the album with your slides and click on the Play button at the bottom.
    2 - in the Settings pane put in 600 seconds. This will let you discuss the slide for up to 10 minutes without the slideshow automatically advancing. Uncheck all of the checkboxes (except the "show title" if you want that option). Set your transition to the style and speed that you want.
    3 - In the music section uncheck the Play music checkbox.
    4 - save the settings via the Save button.
    Now you can start the slideshow by selecting the album and Option-click on the Play button.That will bypass the settings window and go directly to the slideshow. With the Apple remote the play button will start the slideshow once the album has been selected.
    We found that we had to be connected to the digital projector with it turned on before we booted up the laptop. Then in the Monitors preferences pane select the Arrangements section (it only shows up if you're connected to a second monitor or digital projector) to complete your setup. That may vary depending on the projector but if we were already booted before connecting the laptop the projector would not be recognized.
    The first time we got a message window saying the resolution of the screen should be set to 640 x 480. However, later on we used a higher resolution and it worked OK and looked better.
    If you don't have an Apple remote then you can use the arrow keys to operate the slideshow.
    We use the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook Pro to connect to the projector. Depending on the age of your iBook you'll have a VGA or mini VGA port. The mini came with iBooks starting in May, 2002. You'll have to determine what type of connection the projector uses. Ours was a VGA. Then you'll need mini-VGA to VGA adaptor if yours is a later iBook.
    We do have PowerPoint and use it to make the slides but export them to iPhoto for the lectures. So if you have your slides/photos and don't need to have any text with them, just put them in an album and off you go. You can always make title slides with a text editor, do a Print to PDF/Send PDF to iPhoto to get the slide into iPhoto as a jpg file.
    I definitely would do a trial run before the lecture to make sure you have the correct connectors, etc. My wife's first night in class was somewhat of a disaster even though we went in a couple of days before and ran it. Some equipment had changed and she's not very technically adept.

  • How do I use VPN for file sharing?

    Hi folks, hope you can help.
    I need to find a method for file sharing between my company's two offices, which are not only in different countries but also use both PCs and Macs. I think setting up a VPN is the way forward.
    My file server is a Mac Mini running the standard client version of OS 10.5.4, with a static IP, 217.xxx.xxx.xxx. I need the PCs and Macs to access its resources. It is set up to share its files using FTP, AFP and SMB. It is running the application iVPN Server, which I understand is a GUI that makes the built-in OS X VPN Server function available to the client edition of OS X.
    I am currently overseas and can connect to the Mac Mini over VPN. The problem is that I cannot seem to access the Mac Mini's files - I don't know what to do having established the VPN connection. I was half-expecting it to show up in the Finder under Shared or something.
    The Mac Mini has a local IP of 10.0.1.20, but the VPN Server is issuing an IP to all clients in the range 192.168.2.200 and beyond. Is this where I'm going wrong?
    Should the Mac Mini VPN Server also connect to itself, using VPN, as a client?
    I'm really stuck, all help is very much appreciated. Thank you!

    Thanks for prompt reply Topher..
    I am familiar with the Connect to Server window, but I am not sure which IP I should be using. Assuming no VPN connection for the moment, and assuming I'm on a remote network, I can connect to the User's documents folder on the Mac Mini already by typing afp://[username:password]@[static WAN ip]/Documents
    However, I need to ensure that SMB shares work (I know they work when I'm on the local network). So I type smb://[username:password]@[static WAN ip]/Documents but this fails to connect to the User's Documents folder.
    To make the SMB shares work I think I have to connect using VPN. So I connect to the Mac Mini via VPN, and my laptop is issued a VPN IP of 192.168.2.200. Of course my laptop also has an IP from my local network. Do I need to rearrange my network order in System Preferences?
    So I'm now connected via VPN. However to view the Mac Mini's files, surely it also needs to have an IP issued by the VPN Server? But the Mac Mini is the VPN server. So should I go into its System Preferences and set up a VPN connection to itself?
    Now back on the laptop and I want to browse User's Documents folder on the Mac Mini using SMB. I go Connect to Server, and I guess I would type smb://[username:password]@[Mac Mini's VPN IP]/Documents
    Am I on the right track? Thanks again...

  • Have been using iPhoto for weeks and had it open just an hour ago and when I tried to open again I got a message that I had to upgrade in or to see my library??? after trying to upgrade still getting message. What the heck is going on

    Cannot open iphoto library, getting a message staing I have to upgrade to see my library which I have done four times with no results.  I just had iphoto opened an hour before without a problem and have been using it for weeks before today.  Any ideas as to what is going on?

    Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
    iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
    2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
    3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
    File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
    Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
    menu option to rebuild the library.
    4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    5 - Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    MediaMonkey looks like it will do this. Does Windows Media Player?
    Are there other MP3 File Management programs that do this?

    Hiya all,
    Just to let you know, that this has happened again, 2nd time within 4 months of owning it, I cannot add or remove data from the data partition, I can listen to the MP3's fine, but can't do jack with the data partition, does anyone know of anything that can resolve this since the last time I reported the problem? I've double checked that I've got the most up todate firmware and software. It's a bit pants if you can't use the Zen Xtra for what it's designed for!

  • Using iPhoto for organizing and another program for editing

    I really like iPhoto for organizing my photos. The tags/comments along with smart albums are amazing. The problem is that I would like to edit the photos externally to iPhoto. I am wondering if there is a way to edit your photos externally but still use iPhoto to organize them? Would iPhoto still be able to allow the external program to edit the photo nondestructively?
    I am looking to use Gimp (using X11) to edit my photos.
    Thanks for any help.
    mini/ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    bauer172:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is a caveat to using a 3rd party editor from within iPhoto. If Gimp is capable of creating layered files and/or changes the extension to its own after extensive editing you must take some precautions so as not to lose those edits.
    Any time the 3rd party editor requires a change of extension due to the editing you must either flatten the image and/or force a save as a jpg with the same original file name OR do a Save As to the desktop and import that file as a new one. Otherwise you run the chance of saving the edited file and not have iPhoto know it exists.

  • Use Ethernet for file transfers to iMac?

    Hi -- In earlier Powerbook use I used to like using the "Target Disk Mode" to drag files from my laptop to my desktop machines, but of course my new MacBook has no firewire.
    is there anyway to connect my MacBook to my iMac using an ethernet cable, to drag sel;ect files from the portable to the desktop machine? I've got some multi-gig files I need to shuttle back and forth occasionally, so it's pretty tedious to chug along via wireless . . .
    Any other suggestions for most convenient means of shuttling big files?
    Thanks

    Yes, you can use Ethernet to transfer files via File Sharing. If you have a home network then you can share files over your home network whether it be wired or wireless. You can also create a computer-to-computer network by connecting two computers directly via Ethernet cable.
    Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing." Search for "network" to find an article on computer-to-computer networks.
