Should a Phone (Device) Update Law Be Created to Protect Our Information?

Hi, all.
If you think about it, we often perform software updates to many technology devices we own. These devices include our networking routers, our tablets, servers, PCs, set top boxes, gaming consoles, and much more than I have listed here.
There are different types of updates that we perform as well. We install PC BIOS updates, the latest operating system updates, and software updates to applications such as business applications and web browsers.
We install these updates to keep our devices running at their highest performance level with greatest efficiency and improved capabilities. Most importantly, we also install these updates to protect our personal information (our data), ensuring we have the latest, and most secure operating system and security tools to protect our information from hackers/thieves.
We are usually in charge of these updates. With these software update options, we should also take a little responsibility for something we own getting hacked if we don't install current software upgrades or updates - especially if we can update them ourselves.
That leads to my question above. Should a law be passed requiring device manufacturers who control software upgrades/updates to always publish them? Should a law require hardware resellers to publish software update schedules so users will know when the updates are available? Should hardware resellers who control software upgrades/updates be held responsible for putting users' information at risk by not offering the latest software updates?
As our phones become more and more like personal computers, we want to be charge of how they are secured and updated. Right now, for the Windows Phone OS 7/8+, it's completely out of our hands and yet we are responsible for our own phone security.
I suspect that something is going to have to change in the future with software updates to our devices. This is especially true when phones start becoming more hacked like PCs are today.
Just a thought.

Elector,
I've been lurking on this board for a while now, and I have seen a lot of your posts, and this is the first time I felt compelled to respond.
You stated:
"Verizon and others are a business. They sell a connection to the cellular and data network. With your working device."
That is what we are looking for. Verizon is selling a connection, that is EXACTLY what we want! Keep selling us the connection, and stay the hell out of managing the software updates. We are not renting the devices from Verizon, we are simply using their connection. Personally, this is my biggest beef with Verizon right now. I know that I bought a phone with a specific software version that worked. I know Verizon is not obligated to update that phone, etc. All of which I am fine with, what I am not fine with is that Verizon is not letting ME update MY device. Yes, I can use the developer preview, which I am currently using, but it is still not the released version with the firmware update.
I roughly relate this to a cable modem router, I can buy my own router, connect it to my Verizon FIOS, and update the router at any point without having to involve Verizon. What I paid for was a connection to the Verizon FIOS network. This is exactly what I want to have on my phone network as well.
Another interesting quote -
" Should the device makers have the ability to send updates out in the same manner as Apple? Yes I totally favor that.
Is it going to happen soon? No. "
- Well, why not? That is what I find interesting, if Apple can do it, why not Android or Microsoft? And this response isn't directed to Elector, this is directed to Verizon (which, of course, I know will never actually respond to this).
- Have a nice day

I have problem when I updated iOS7 yesterday. At first, there was a message popped out in my Iphone 4 said "iOS7 available for u to update, then i clicked "update", then it said "wait while it verifying", after that my phone tuned blank and what i saw was only the "logo of apple". Until now i see only that Apple logo, i can't either switch my phone on or off.

I want to restore my phone by connecting my Iphone4 to iTunes in Mac but it doesn't show phone device.
I don't know why it doesnt connect to pc(Mac pro).
    Any solution?

You need to restart the phone in DFU mode and update the software.
To restart the phone in DFU mode press the power and home button simultaneously for like 10 seconds once the phone is switched off release the power button keep holding the home button while you connect to the computer which has Itunes running and then you can restore or update the software, you can download the update and connect after the software has been downloaded if your phone disconnects, And enjoy you new IOS7.

Not what you want to hear, I know, but this is a user to user forum. No one here has the power to help you.
You can get information about an order you placed on the Apple Online Store through the Order Status page. If you prefer, you can also get order status or make changes by phone at 1-800-692-7753.
You can try calling again and if the person you speak to can't help, ask to speak to a supervisor.

  • Can Lync common area phone request device updates?

    Hi,
simple question: can a Lync Phone Edition device (LPE, Aries class, Polycom CX500 / CX600 etc.) request device updates, when the phone is hosting a common area phone contact object?
Fortunately I know the answer: it seems NOT, I see in the system settings that there is an error for the last device update request. However as soon as I login with a normal user account, the device update request status is 200, and the phone gets updated
under 5 minutes and reboots properly.
While I know the answer, I would like to get feedback from MS: is this a design defect of the product, a bug in the way common area phone contact object authenticates on the Lync webservices or something else? Other peoples experience is more than welcome!

  • After Device update, phone keeps restarting + occa...

I installed Anna through the Device update first, then the problems started happening. My N8 restarts every 10 minutes, so I technically cannot do anything with it. Tried to install the Anna 1/2, 2/2 updates and only 2/2 installed, error with 1/2. I also occasionally get an error message at startup: phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Try to connect your device with OVI suite then click reinstall update if this doesn't work you have to take it for nearest Nokia Care Point
If I've helped in any way, a click upon the star over on the left would always be appreciated.
If however my answer also solves your problem clicking below it will benefit other users!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I have a question regarding my txt/alert tones. I recently updated my iPhone 5's software without first backing it up on iCloud or my computer (oops). After my phone finished updating, i lost the new ringtones and txt/alert tones i had bought. I connected my iPhone to my computer and sync'd it hoping that it could download my purchases from the itunes store and then put them back on to my phone but no such luck. When i look at my iphone on my computer and look at tones, they do not show up at all. However, if i click on the "On This iPhone" tab and click on "Tones" the deleted ringtones and altert tones show up...they are just grey'd out and have a dotted circle to the left of them. I also tried to go to the iTunes store on my phone and redownload them and it tells me that i have already purchased this ringtone and asks me if i want to buy it again. I press Cancel. I know when i do that with music it would usually let me redownload the song without buying it again but it wont let me with the ringtones...so how do i get them back? any help would be greatly appreicated

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • How do i update Apps after creating a new Apple ID?

I created a new Apple ID to seperate my account from mmy Son's account.  We've had the same account going to two different phones since he was in Middle School - he is now in college and with iCloud I really don't want all his music and contacts etc.
The problem is - even though I set my iPhone (3GS) to access my new account - it's not allowing me to update Apps that are currently on my phone purchased under my old account.  It asks me for the password to the old Apple ID.
Is  there a way to update the Apps I already purchased though my new account?

If you know the old password, it should allow you to update.
However, if you want to redownload the app fresh, you will have to delete it from your phone first.  Also, delete it from your iTunes so it will not try to sync the old version back on.
NOTE:  The deleting/redownload app worked for me when I switched AppleIDs, but I also wiped the phone and started with a fresh library in iTunes.  I did this because I wanted no trace of my old AppleID anywhere.  I was able to redownload apps with my new ID, and everything now is tied to my new one.

  • With the new OVI suite recognize phone device as "...

The problem started when I updated the OVI suite a couple of days before. With the new OVI suite my phone device (Nokia C5) is recognized as "s60 Handset" and I don't have access to my internal phone memory, but the SD card contents only!
I tried to reinstall the old version of OVI suite (2.2.1.23) that worked quite nice. I even deleted the Nokia directories and registry values on my computer when I uninstalled the new version and didn't make a difference.
Just don't tell me that the recognition of the phone device as "s60 Handset" with no internal phone memory access is a normal thing. If that's so I must remark that OVI suite made a major backward step.
When I experienced the Nokia OVI suite (2.2.1.23) for the first time I thought that Nokia finally made a difference in software programming.
Now I see that the bad practice of Nokia PC suite is still going on.

The new version of PC suite will work with Windows 7 . As for its compatibility with Nokia 7610, it should work..However trying it is the best way to confirm..because there will not be any harm to the PC or the phone if it doesn't ..
You may also try the Nokia Suite from here ..

  • Windows Phone 8X Update Does Not Resolve Problems

Microsoft has published the fixes that are included in the latest update here:
    http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/how-to/wp8/basics/windows-phone-8-update-history
None of these updates are present on my device, even though I do see the version number in my phone's "About" screen that should include these fixes.  When will these be available for my phone?

I get an error message when using my device to update. What should I do?"Remote server not responding"
Most likely your Nokia device cannot connect to the Internet or the server is not available. Internet connectivity problems may have several causes, such as a temporary network failure in the operator's network or Internet, or missing or incorrect access point settings for the device updates (or web browser) application. Remember that if your device supports it, you can also use WiFi to connect to the Internet and update.
You also need to have Update Server settings programmed into your device. These can be operator-specific settings (contact your operator for help), or standard Nokia settings as shown below:
Key *#0000# into your phone's home screen or go to Device manager (consult your user guide if necessary).
Select Options > Server profiles > Options > New server profile > Copy = No
    Server Name
    Nokia
    Server ID

    Auto accept all requests
    Yes
"Update cancelled by server" or "Update not allowed. Contact service provider."
Your Nokia device may not have been able to send a message requested or expected by the server, or your service provider does not allow updates. If that is the case, the server may close the connection. Wait a moment and try again. If unsuccessful, contact your service provider.
"Phone is being updated. Try again later"
The update sequence is active until your Internet connection is closed. Wait a moment and try again. Check that your Nokia device has no other Internet connections – for example, that you are not currently uploading or downloading anything other than this update.
"No network connection. Unable to download."
Remember that if your device supports it, you can also use WiFi to connect to the Internet and update.
The only other thing I can suggest is to fully back up your X6, then do a factory reset, then try the OTA update.

Everything is plugged in and I don't have any errors on the printer. Please help.

    Hi @EddieTr ,
I see you're experiencing issues updating the printer's firmware. I would like to help you resolve this issue.
    Power cycle the printer.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Print a Configuration Report to see which firmware version you have now. The latest Version is 20140129.
    Printing a Configuration Report.
Connect the USB cable from the printer directly to the computer and run the firmware update again, if your version is older. (don't use a USB hub or Dock)
Be sure to select the newly created print queue for the USB connection while using the tool.
