Should all apps start up upon boot up?

When I power up my iPad 3 , should all the apps automatically activate and show up as active at the bottom of the screen? An Apple Store guy told me they would not. If not, how do I stop this from happening? Thanks in advance.

The iPad keeps the last state of each app run stored in memory. The apps that are shown at the bottom of the screen when you double click the Home button are those apps whose last used state has been saved. This info is not purged when you power off. If you want to purge all of them try a reboot of your ipad.
Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

iPhone do not do automatic update. You have to manually trigger the updates.
If your Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Automatic Downloads > Music, Apps, Books are ON then when you purchase any new content/item with any devices/computer iTunes, it will automatically download. Switch it OFF if you do not want that to happen.

  • Problem starting X upon boot startup!

Hey guys... odd issue starting up... lately (and out of the blue)... i cant get into X to see LXDM follwed by XFCE4.
I initially now start off at the console and have to login in that way... when i start lxdm or xfce4 manually.. i see the following:
    Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.
then if i then if i remove the lock file...and try again... this is what i see:
    _XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
    _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
    Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
Now if i use the following command as root:
    pkill -9 X
then try logging in again... it works.... at least until the next reboot.
Any suggestions on firmly resolving this issue?

Then of course you are going to get error messages when you try to start X saying that X is already running. That's because X is already running. Reboot, and when you get thrown to the VC, run (as root)
    journalctl -b
Which will give you systemd's output since last boot. Scroll down a lot until you see output about LXDM. You should see error messages.
Alternatively, you could skip the reboot and just do
    sudo journalctl | grep lxdm
(Which will search through your ENTIRE journal) Or look through ArchWiki: Systemd#Journal to find something better.

  • How do I start IDS upon boot on OSX 10.5?

I'm trying to start IDS CS3 upon system bootup, which worked just fine by adding a StartupItem under 10.4.
However, under 10.5, this no longer works.
Anyone have any suggestions whatsoever, I'm happy to try them out, as long as it doesn't involve always logging in a user...

Interesting. We have written a script that we place in /Library/StartupItems which works just fine under 10.4, but under 10.5, we get errors indicating that it's trying to access the UI session and isn't signed.
Have you changed your system configuration in any way to circumvent this? Or am I just missing something fundamental here? I do have lot's of sysadmin experience with SunOS and Linux, but very little when it comes to BSD and OSX, so it's plausible I'm going at this the wrong way.
If you post your script, I'm happy to try it and see if it works for me and learn from any misstakes I've made in my setup.

I turned my pb12" on lately and it is very very slow, upon boot up now the scroll wheel of death is on and it will not boot to the desktop finder. So my question is this:
what the heck is going on??
    I reset the pram
would not boot in safe mode
    have 10gigs free
    1gig ram
nothing unusual document or app wise lately
just about a few weeks ago it started to become sluggish to non productive.
any ideas as to how I can remedy the situation.
    Much appreciated

Hi, Petoosh, and welcome to the discussions.
    a) there are more people here with similar problems as yours. I recommend that you search the forum in order to see how they solved their problem. Did you "repair permissions"?; did you check the HD and memory?
    b) MORE IMPORTANT: make sure that you have everything backed up. Just in case...
    c) can you boot from the install disk?
what happens if you take off all peripherals (printer, external disk, internet connection)?
hope this helps. Please post back in any case.

MY screen continually freezes up. I've tried closing all apps that are open and have held down the home button and start button simultaneously but neither helped. Can someone out there help me?

Well the next couple of things to try would be to reset all settings, and if that doesn't help, it's probably time to restore the iOS software.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. That will take all settings on the iPad back to factory defaults. It will not delete anything and you will not lose any data, but you will have to enter all settings again ...WiFi passwords, enable Siri, select your wallpaper, adjust brightness, turn on location services and set privacy settings, etc, etc.
You can read about restoring the software here.
iTunes: Restoring iOS software - Support - Apple
Should you decide to restore the iOS, it is extremely important that you back up first so that you can restore from the backup and then sync with iTunes afterward in order to restore all content back to the iPad. It is all covered in the kb article.
If you do not sync with iTunes, then I assume that you backup with iCloud. In that case you can erase the device in Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings. Once again, backing up with I loud is I,operative before you do this so that you can restore from the iCloud backup after you erase the iPad and start over again with activation.
You should read this first before you restore from either backup.

This is a must read before you erase the iPad should you decide to go that route.

  • All apps should have a trial time

I just feedbacked this to Apple:
I have thought about this a long time, and I cannot understand why this in't implemented in the iPhone App store yet.
All apps should have a free trial period for a period of time (eg 3 days).
    - This way you may try out an app that you are interested in.
    - The developer doesn't need to create "light" applications.
    - All ratings will belong to *the* app, not a light app + the real app.
This should of course be approved by the developer that may by various reasons don't allow a free trial. But the default should be true.
And the developer should also declare the trial time, maybe down to hours.
I think this would have a great impact on the sell!
At least for me, I don't want to spend money on something that I'm not sure about, and I think there are many people that thinks the same way.
    Please consider this.

It really doesn't matter what we think, because we're all users here and we don't effect policy.
What you're asking here is tantamount to polling, which is prohibited by the Terms of Use (link to it at the bottom of the page) of this forum, because it serves as no help to other users on this forum seeking legitimate assistance with a technical support question.
I'm not saying your suggestion was bad, just that if you want to know what other's think, consider starting a blog, which is a more appropriate forum, not a user to user technical support website.

How much free space do you actually have? Go to the Apple menu and select About This Mac... More Info... and click on the Storage tab. You should see something like this...
This will show you how much free space you have and what's taking up all the space on your hard drive. You may need to backup and trash some seldom used files, applications, etc. You have to drag them into the Trash and empty the trash to regain the space. A general rule of thumb is that you should have about 15% of your hard drive storage free.
    Good luck,

You mention that you have tried restarting, but did you try a reset?
Simultaneously hold down the Home and the On buttons until the iPad shuts downs. Ignore the Off slider should it appear. This will take ten seconds give or take. After the sut down is complete, press the Onn button to restart. NOTE: this is different from simply shutting down the iPad.

The quote below is from a previous thread where several people solved your same problem with the stated technique. Maybe it will work for you. Good Luck.
iTunes 7.0.2 FIX ("Have tried all 'fixes' suggested but iTunes STILL not opening").
    1. Uninstall iTunes and QuickTime.
    2. Do a search in the C:\ drive for "QuickTime". Delete EVERYTHING that pops up.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Install QUICKTIME ONLY
    5. THEN install iTunes......and IT WORKS.....Just remember to install QuickTime FIRST.

  • I got my iPhone 5 s almost a month ago and updated its iOS but from there on I started having problems, the ph sometimes doesn't respond at all to the touch or apps start to open on their own very rapidly and this continues till it can go no further!

I got my iPhone 5 almost a month ago and updated its iOS but from there on I started having problems, the ph sometimes doesn't respond at all to the touch or apps start to open on their own very rapidly and this continues till it can go no further!

    First steps in troubleshooting:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Then reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go. (No data loss)

When you're listening to a podcast, slide the current artwork up from the bottom, and you will reveal the control panel. Adjust the little switch in the middle so that it is pointing North, instead of Northwest. That will fix your problem.
