Should application disk images appear in Disk Utility?

When I run Disk Utility on my back up external drive, the disk image for the Google Earth plugin appears in the left hand window, separated from the list of visible drives by a line. I've never seen this before. Any reason why it should be happening?

Each of the backups on the Time Capsule is a sparsebundle. You can see the sparsebundle(s) by clicking on Time Capsule under Shared in a Finder window, then after a moment or two you can double click on the Time Capsule folder. To attempt to repair a backup, do the following. Bear in mind that the Repair function could take a few hours. I prefer to run it overnight so I don't stress about it. There's nothing like reviewing Repair messages over steaming hot cup o' java.
- Turn off Time Machine on the Mac that backs up to the sparsebundle in question. (The Mac's name is in the sparsebundle's name).
- Double click on the sparsebundle.
- Once the "Opening" dialog appears, click "Skip" to skip the check.
- You have now mounted the virtual backup drive stored in the sparsebundle -- it shows up under your list of Devices in the Finder window.
- Open Disk Utility
- Select "Backup of [machine name]" in the left pane
- Select the First Aid tab if it's not already selected
- Click on Repair disk
- Give it a few hours.
Sometimes, if the sparsebundle can't be repaired, the solution is to delete the sparsebundle and start over. Perhaps Data Rescue works on a mounted sparsebundle -- I'm not sure.
It's unlikely you need to repair the Time Capsule's drive itself, as it usually has very few files on it (just the sparsebundles), and it's disk directory is rarely updated.

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Check that you have the current version of Disk Utility.

  • Getting "The Application Disk Utility quit unexpectedly"

Hi all. New to the forum.
Went to do my weekly disk Utility this afternoon and it won't open from my applications. Keep getting the error "The Application Disk Utility quit unexpectedly". Now This morning i did allow firefox to do an update, not sure if this has caused some issue. Running 10.5.6 and have been for some time with no issues. I've ran the install disk and ran Utility from there with no problems however there was a ton of stuff it was correcting. Repaired Disk as well. Restarted, tried to pull from applications, again no luck same message. I then ran Safe Boot, Reset PRAM and again still no fix. I removed Firefox, chess and some other game's I've downloaded from the apple site just to be safe. Still nothing. Anyone advise? I'm set up to meet with a Mac Gen. at the local apple store in 2 days. Anyone have any idea's? The only change I have done recently is the firefox update. UGGGG!!!

Have you tried to run Disk Utility from a system Install Disk or start-up from a system install disk and run disk utility from the disk?

  • Disk utility "You can't use this version of the application Disk Utility with this version of Mac OSX. You have Disk Utility 12.1"

    I use mountain lion 10.8.1
I try start disk utility it only says: "You can't use this version of the application Disk Utility with this version of Mac OSX. You have Disk Utility 12.1"

To do a Reinstall of the OS boot to the Recovery HD, Command+r key at startup, then select Reinstall Mac OS X. the files will be downloaded from the internet and then the instal will begin.
With Mt Lion it is also available from the Mac App store in your Purchases area. You may be able to download it and then nmanually starting the install while booted to Mt Lion.
But I'd normally use the Recovery HD as that takes the installed OS out of the picture.

  • You cannot open the application "Disk Utility.app" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.

I mounted a disk image, which popped up a message about Disk Utility not being supported on this type of mac. I ignored it because the image seemed to be mounted, and I was able to drag the app icon out of the image and into my application folder.
Then I tried to launch the app and it wouldn't launch because it "may be corrupted" or something along those lines. I didn't pay close attention because I thought hey, it was just a bad download, I'll try again.
Now I can't open Disk Utility. Every time I try I get this message. I've seen a similar message a few times since updating to Mavericks with other applications (one I can remember is Text Wranger occasionially complains it can't open a file, but it can, and trying again usually gets it to work... This previous experience led to my cavalier approach to the Disk Utility wierdness)
How can I get Disk Utility working again?

You will need to locate the Terminal app in your Mac's Utilities folder. It looks like this:
Find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
    Open Terminal.
Copy (triple-click to select the entire line) and Paste the following line into the Terminal window, followed by the Return or Enter key:
    file /Applications/Utilities/Disk\ Utility.app/Contents/MacOS/Disk\ Utility
Copy and paste the results of that command in a reply.

  • Disk Utility: new disk image takes forever- computer unresponsive-HELP!

    Hello,
I'm using Disk Utility to create a "new disk image from folder." The folder is on one Lacie exernal usb drive, and the target location is another Lacie usb drive (150 GB free).
The folder is 55GB. After 3+ hours, the activity window still shows "creating image" though the progress bar has changed from blue to pulsating blue/white stripes and I have the spinning beach ball of death.
Computer is unresponsive and the only way to terminate is to press the pwr button until everything shuts off.
Why is disk utility hanging like this? (or does it take more than 3 hours to create an image 55GB in size?
I've had no issues with previously creating images, though these were all 15GB or smaller.

USB takes forever....the reason I got a Firewire Ext. Drive.
It's soooo much easier to make a clone doing the following.....
I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on PPC Macs but are on some Intel Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on PPC Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • Disk Utility roadblock

Hi gang, I'm hoping someone has some help or at least comforting words for me. My Mac, running 10.2.8, has recently been running a bit slow and I restarted with the Jaguar install disk and ran disk utility. Disk First Aid said the disk needed to be repaired, so I did so, but at the end it did not say the disk was "OK", just that it had been repaired, which I thought odd. So I ran Verify and it said the disk still needed repair. So I ran repair again. And again. And again (you get the idea). It just keeps saying the disk needs repair.
So I repaired permissions, thinking that might clear whatever error it was running into. But First Aid still says it needs repair.
I don't have any other disk utilities and so I tried restarting in single-user mode and ran fsck, which also could not fix the problem.
Should I be worried? The system seems to be working better (no long delays opening applications, like there was to begin with), but I'm concerned.
I don't have any other drives except a USB Zip 100, not large enough to back up all the data and reformat the drive. Can anyone suggest a (non-destructive) course of action?
    KK

    Having the following backup strategy makes something like you just did painless, and only takes 30 minutes. When you can swing it, the purchase of an external FireWire drive that is bigger then your main one is a God send;
I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread before you make a clone of it.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be carefull, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.
    Cheers!

  • Can you help with automator & disk utility?

I'm trying to set up an automated "permissions repair" to run every night. I set up a workflow using automator and saved it as an iCal item. If I double-click on the resulting .app, or run from Automator, the workflow works as I expected, but all I find in the morning is an open Disk Utility with no repair performed & no error messages. Examining the log file confirms that nothing happened except the launch.
Here's what the wf does: Launch Application-Disk Utility, Watch Me Do-Click in the text "Macintosh HD" Click the "Repair DIsk Permissions" button, Pause-for 10 seconds, Play QuicKeys Shortcut-(types admin username, tab, admin password, enter).
Like I said, works just fine except when iCal runs it. What am I doing wrong?

..."I'm trying to set up an automated "permissions repair" to run every night."...
As others have mentioned, it shouldn't be necessary to "repair permissions" every night.
And if you are an administrator in charge computers used in a shared environment (eg. schools, libraries, a shared machine in a work place, etc.), I would go further and say that "repair permissions" should definitely not be run at all without verifying them first to make sure everything checks out, and certainly should not be automated unless some sort of verification routine is included.
With Leopard's version of "repair permissions", failure to exercise sufficient caution could allow even "standard" users to gain "root" level privileges.

  • Burning DVD-Rs using disk utility

I posted here about a year ago asking why I couldn't burn my 4.28-gig video files onto a 4.7-gig DVD-R. I got some explanations that DVD-Rs technically hold a bit less that 4.7 gigs and that sort of thing. But someone mentioned that I should use Disk Utility instead of dragging the files onto the DVD-R, and that worked.
Now I'm trying to copy a 4.47-gig file using Disk Utility. I think with various upgrades, the Disk Utility interface may have changed?? Whatever I did last year that worked so well and easily, it wasn't readily apparent this year. I made a disk image of the files per certain instructions I found, but it still said it wouldn't fit.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks very much --
    Christine

    << Remember 1Gb is simply 1024Mb. >>
    Oh no, not math!
I tried making a CD/DVD master from the DVD; using that option, I couldn't get to the size choices on my system. I still forged ahead, hoping for the best, but at the end of my efforts got an "invalid argument" message. (The disk isn't copy-protected or anything, incidentally.)
I have all the files copied to my desktop as well, and the initial thing I tried was making a disk image out of those. I did select the 4.7 gig DVD option at that point. On my desktop, the folder is 4.36 gigs, but the disk image wound up being 4.47 gigs.
Should I have selected "Read Only" instead of "DVD/CD Master," and should "Encryption" be "None" (default) or "AES-128" (recommended)?
Thanks so much for all your help!

  • Disk Utility Error - "Underlying task reported failure on exit"

I've been having a problem opening Logic 7.1 (it will crash at startup every time) and I got the advice to repair disk permissions. Both 'verify disk permissions' and 'repair disk permissions' work, but when I go to 'verify disk' I get the following readout/error:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.

    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 2859750 instead of 2859751)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
So I can't complete a rapair because it has this error. I'm wondering how I can fix this and if it could be the cause of the error that I get every time I open Logic. Thank you all in advance for your help!

    Al
Disk Utility cannot repair this type of error. Not sure this is always the case, Al. I've had "incorrect block count" errors repaired in the past, so it must be worth a try before spending money (although I regard money spent on DiskWarrior as good insurance!)
    Cam
It has to be worth you at least trying to Repair the error.
I think the first thing you should try is a Safe Boot, which will automatically run the disk checking and repair routines: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode. If the check during Safe Boot is unable to repair the disk, your system will shut down rather than continuing, otherwise it will have successfully repaired the disk.
If this doesn't work, you should try Disk Utility from the Install Disk. First read these articles: Mac OS X 10.4 Help: About testing and repairing a disk, and Using Disk Utility and fsck to resolve startup issues or perform disk maintenance.
Let us know how this goes.

  • Who do I believe - Onyx or Disk Utility??

My mid-2009 MBP has been running 100% until this morning.
I restarted and for the first time I got the infamous progress bar on startup, After about two/three minutes, it went to the login screen and the OS seems to be running normally apart from Safari losing the homepage and wifi not auto-connecting to my home wifi.
I booted into Lion's recovery partition and ran Disk Utility - the disk was reported to be 100% with no problems. I rebooted into the OS and ran Onyx. Onyx reported the SMART status to be fine, but when checking the drive, it reported a problem and that I should run Disk Utility from the recovery partition. I did this again, but DIsk Utility again says there are no issues.
In the past I have had to run disk utility to repair incorrect file sizes/block sizes (IIRC) - the repairs were always succesful. At the time I assumed this was related to me using uTorrent to download a couple of files (nothing copyrighted!!). I didn't use uTorrent for a while and had no issues. Yesterday I used uTorrent again, and now this issue.... Is this just a coincidence??
If uTorrent is causing an issue, I am still left with the problem that Onyx reports a problem with the drive, while Disk Utility says all is well, preventing me from repairing anything......
I am still getting the progress bar on startup....
Would be very grateful for any ideas/advice!
P.S. I recently upgraded the RAM to two 4GB sticks. However, I immediately ran memtest in single user mode and it reported no issues with the RAM, so I don't think RAM could be an issue....?

OK... I see your points, but I'm still left with the fact that there clearly is an issue somewhere: I'm still getting the progress bar on startup (which is not normal) and yet Disk Utility says there are no problems. So what do I do?

  • Help with 10.8.1 Disk Utility... doesn't work.

I Just bought a new macbook pro. It has ver 10.8.1.  I get this when trying to open disk utility:
"You can’t open the application “Disk Utility” because it may be damaged or incomplete."
Normally, if the machine came with a disc, I could restore from the disc. But this one, no disc. Just a pretty pamphlet.

Or pack it back up in the box it came in, Take it back to the store you bought it from and get a full refund. Then buy another that works correctly right out of the box.

  • Disk Utility doesn't see Time capsuleDisk

I'm trying to migrate a backup did with Time Machine to a brand new Airport Time Capsule Disk.
This is for don't loess the previous backups having ones new.
I got some information and it looks I should connect both  disks (old HD and new Time capsule) to my Mac , then restore the new one using as source the old backups.
The matter is that DISK UTILITY APP doesn't see the Time Capsule disk .
Who may help me in doing this operation?
    Many thanks
    ivano

Niel, many thanks for your reply. I've gone trough the instructions you've indicated but I've not found my case.
Let me try to explain my situation
Till now I did the backups in an external Western Digital HD (MyBookLive) using Time Machine.
The disk was gonna be full so I bought a Time Capsule bigger than the WD I had.
My intention was to continue to do backups using TimeMachine on the new TimeCapsule KEEPING ONLINE the old backups.
I read that I should use DISK UTILITY APP and restore the old spares bundle file into a new one locate into the Time Capsule.
My problem is that using DISK UTILITY I cannot see both the WD Disk neither the Time Capsule  .
Many thanks in advance for your support
