Should have enough space, but of course problems....

Hey. So I've had several large files, around 40 min video files to be exact, that I've been burning to dvd's using idvd. They were .avi files which didn't work with idvd. So I downloaded isquint and converted them to mp4 with the optimization for tv checked. Once these were converted, I burnt one of them to a dvd and everything was great. My question is that since I have alot of movie files, I would like to put more than one episode on a disk. The dvd's I have are 4.7gb and the video files range from 350 mb to 500 mb. Whenever I drag one to my dvd menu, I look at the status tab and under the "DVD Capacity" bar, it says that I've taken up 2.9 gb of 4.0. How could this be considering I've only added a video file that is tops 500 mb? I know the menu's themselves take up space, but they can't take up that much do they? I actually try to stay with the simple themes anyways. Usually I add a background image (jpg) and mayb 50 seconds of an mp3 for background music and thats it for the theme. With this all said and done, the "DVD Capacity" bar says I've taken up just about 3 gb's space of 4. Is it possible to put more than just one episode thats at tops 500 mb on a 4.7gb disk? I would think so, but idvd just isn't letting me do it. I just get the mssage that says I dont have enough room.
Well, thanks for listening to me blabber...
Any help would be extremely appreciated!
Thanks, Neil

As already pointed out, iDVD works off time and size of the original files have no influence on how much of the final DVD will be used. Under Best Performance (preferences) you can put about an hour onto a single layer DVD blank and under Best Quality you get up to about 120 minutes.
MP4 files are very small, smaller than the MPEG2 files they will be converted to by iDVD to be in standard video DVD format. So your small MP4 files will actually be made into larger MPEG files by iDVD. If you are on Best Performance and one MP4 file is 15 minutes, then it is going to require roughly 1 gig of your 4 gig DVD space, regardless if the original file was much smaller than that.
It is just like if you take 10 MP3 songs that might be a total of 50MB, but if you burn those ten songs as a normal audio CD for use in the car, when they get recorded as AIFF files to the CD they now take up several hundred (up to 700) megabytes because it is a matter of time (a audio CD can hold up to 80 minutes of music), not file size again. Same thing happens with iDVD if your source files are tiny MP4 files.

Use iPhone as designed. Like any digital camera, download your photos to your computer and delete from the iPhone to create space required for iOS upgrade.

  • Time machine says restore target does not have enough space, but not true

    I have a PowerMac G5 Tower with Dual 1.8Ghz, 3GB Memory.
The internal system disk is a WD 1TB(931.4GB) disk, but it has serious volume structure errors that are not recoverable with First Aid or Micromat TechTool. The 1TB disk was only about 1/3 full(~350GB used).
Fortunately, I have been using time machine since July, using the exact same type of disk(WD 1TB), which is external..
I installed another external 1TB that is exactly the same as the original system disk(WD 1TB - 931.3GB).
I am able to select the backup source of the original disk from the time machine disk, but when I select the destination(new 1TB disk which is completely empty and reformatted), I get the following error:
-"This volume does not have enough space to restore your system"
I don't get it.....the original and new disks are exactly the same size. In fact the time machine disk is also the same WD 1TB disk. Realistically, only 350GB should only be needed anyhow...
    Please help....
    Thanks,
    Phil

Apple phone support recommended that I install Leopard on the replacement disk, boot from it, then use the 'transfer data from time machine backup option'. This worked, but takes an hour longer because I have to install an OS. I am in the process of transferring 337GB of data to the new disk using this method(system is estimating this takes about 8 hours, so I am sending this note before it completes). This further verifies that there was plenty of space on the 1TB replacement, despite the error message.
The new replacement disk I chose was an internal Seagate SATA disk. I was wrong in the previous note, the original internal system disk that had the volume corruption was also a Seagate SATA disk, not WD(though, the external 1TB was a WD). I did duplicate the bug mentioned in this bug with this disk before I installed the OS, so the problem had nothing to do with Seagate vs. WD, or internal vs. external. I booted from the replacement, then used the setup assistant to transfer data from a time machine backup.
In summary, there definitely is a bug in the time machine restore option: Time machine reports that there is not enough space to recover, despite the fact that it had a full 1TB clean, and newly reformatted space. I duplicated the error at least 6-7 times, during the course of troubleshooting, with different replacement 1TB disks(WD and Seagate), Internal/External disks, Firewire, USB, and SATA connect.
This is very nerve-wracking, as the restore is the major reason we do backups. How could apple have missed this one?
For what it is worth, I spent ALOT of time on this, because I also ran into the bug that WD external disks(firewire and USB) are not bootable on Power PC systems(this is of course a WD issue....).

  • I'm trying to download Final Cut Pro from the app store but I get a "fail" message.  I have enough space on my laptop.  Help?

I have purchased Final Cut Pro App for my Mac Book Pro.  It will start to download but then I receive a simple download failed message.  I've tried many times.  I have enough space on my laptop.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Select
              /var/log ▹ appstore.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Can't download iOS 5 to my old iPhone 4 - I get an error message saying I don't have enough space on my computer, but I know that I do.  How can upload successfully?  Or can I hook up an external hard drive to ENSURE I have enough space? If so, how?

I just tried to download the new iOS 5 software during my sync with iTunes on my computer to my iPhone 4, however, I got an error message saying that I did not have enough space on my computer to continue (even though I am pretty sure I do).  It offered me the choice of deleting much of the media on my iPhone in order to continue, which of course I declined.
How can I ensure that I have enough space on my computer to download the new iOS 5 software?  I don't want to delete anything on my computer and I have already defragged.  Can I just hook up an external hard drive which I am certain has enough space?  If so, how can I ensure that iTunes recognizes the external hard drive as the drive that it should be downloading the software to?
    Thanks

Why, if it told you you have insufficient space on your computer, would it suggest making more space available on your phone?
At a guess, you have insufficient space on your phone. Installing software will typically require more space than the final size of the software, perhaps even twice or three times as much, for the installation process. You can easily dump some videos or music temporarily, and then synch them back in afterwards.

  • A while ago I wanted to download/buy an album on my iPhone 4 but I didnt have enough space so I deleted some stuff and downloaded the album. well ever since then my other music won't play, only that one album will play and none of my other music will play

a while ago I wanted to buy an album but I didn't have enough space on my phone, (iPhone 4) so I deleted some things off my phone and downloaded the album. well ever since then all my other music won't play, only that one album will play. I thought it was because I havent been able to get the software update on my phone but I don't have enough space for that either. I deleted almost all my photos, all my apps, i deleted almost all the info that is on the apps that you can't delete, but it says I have too much music and I only have 45 songs!!!!!!!! and I don't want to delete them because that's what I'm trying to listen to but I can't because of whatever reason. PLEASE HELP!!

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • TS1702 Does any one know how to solve this iPod touch error: I am tryin to pay for an app but I can because it says that I don't have enough space when I actually have more than enough space to download it so please help me

Does anyone know how to solve this problem: I a trying to download a paid app but I cannot because the AppStore says that info not have enough space to download it even though I have more than enough space so if any of you know what can solve this problem then please let me know

The app is compressed and needs swap space to install. As a rule of thumb you need 3 times the listed size of the app available, or in your case 4.6GB. You only have 1.7GB.

I rented a short film on iTunes but didn't have enough space for the HD version I paid for. I was unable to download it in OR convert it to SD for whatever reason and cannot seem to download my purchase on my desktop iTunes. Am I missing something?

When you purchase an HD movie or show, in most cases the SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select Movies or TV shows as appropraite. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the movies/shows and be able to download them.
Note that with digital copies from a Blu-Ray or DVD, if it comes with an HD copy, you normally cannot get the SD copy as well and have to purchase it separately if you want it.
    Regards.

What I learned is that all the people who did not download the updates are good. There phone is working the same. The people who have, they're having battery problems
I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. Usually problems of rapid battery drain can be traced to bad apps (FaceBook is the worst offender) or corrupt data being synced from iCloud or other sources (gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, etc).
The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.
And also see this: http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain. It is the best treatise I have seen on the subject of battery usage.

According to the trms of the iTunes and app stores - all sales are final. but that doe not mean that you can't try anyway. People ask for refunds all the time. Use the Express Lane email to contact iTunes.
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
You can still download the other movies in iTunes on your computer. Launch iTunes and go to Store>Check for Available Downloads. You can download them in iTunes and then sync them to the iPad later. When you are done watching the first movie, you can transfer it into iTunes on your computer, delete it from the iPad and you will have the room for another movie on the device. To transfer the movie when you are done with it, you can use the transfer purchases feature.
    Transfer purchases.
