Should I accept all software updates?

I was just wondering how often should I update my software? I am thinking that if I were to update software every time I am notified, then my hard disk capacity would fill quite quickly. I'm not sure if that is an unfounded conclusion.
So, should I update it regularly? Or opt to skip some updates?
Thanks in advanced!

HI,
Don't worry about disk space as far as updates are concerned. It's very important to keep you system software up to date for the sake of security alone. Read here.
Apple Product Security
As for disk space, control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.

Should I download all software updates that appear automatically?  I'm always worried that they may disrupt the system.
    Thanks.

Ensure that you're getting the updates from the Mac App Store or the developer's site, and keep a backup of your system.

  • Should I accept all windows updates?

This is unclear to me. It seems some people have said to not do this since some windows updates can cause problems. I have been having a problem with teh computer not recognizing a monitor (that I have used for years as a 2nd monitor but suddenly quit seeing). It's not clear if a windows or nvidia update caused this. So do I accept important windows updates or not?
    Michael

I always explicitly pick what I want applied from Windows Update. I refuse to use any drivers from Windows Update.

  • All Software Updates - Internet Explorer 11

Just to confirm, Internet Explorer 11 is not suppose to be in the list of All Software Updates ?  There are cumulative and security updates for it, but no Internet Explorer 11 installation.  (though IE 7, 8, and 9 installations are listed)
    Thanks
PS.  if we need to deploy using the offline installer, are there silent install switches for IE11 ?

After synchronizing the Software Update Point in SCCM2012 R2, looking at the wsyncmgr.log, there were only a few errors (see below), probably related to the IE11 that we're missing.  Searching for information on "The Microsoft Software

  • Last night, mail suddenly lost all my emails, which were stored in mailboxes.  What happened and how can I find my lost files?  I have the latest MacBookPro, running Lion 10.7.2 all software updates installed

Last night the mail application from Apple lost all my old emails, which were stored in mailboxes, neatly sorted by category.  What happened and how do I find them?
Details:  I shut down mail to run errands outside my office.  My late model MacBook Pro was on "sleep".  When I returned, I opened the application, and (RATS!) all the mailboxes were missing.  They just evaporated.
Operating system:  10.7.2 - all software updates installed and current as of 24 hours ago (12-30-11, 6 AM EST).
ln the mail program, the trash folder is OK and the sent folder is OK.
Yesterday, I did no maintenance on my mail folders.
    HELP!

1 - the sudden disappearance of my 22 mailboxes, used to sort the emails that I need to file for future use
That was most likely the result of some kind of corruption, as I've already said, not a bug in Mail.  Have you repaired the hard drive with Disk Utility recently?  That wouldn't be a bad idea.
2 - at random times, mail (or the server) says that my password is incorrect and I must reenter (fix:  usually I can quit mail, restart, and the connection is restored without reentering my password)
This is a known issue, where a failure to respond promptly on the server's end mimics what happens when the password is rejected.  There's no need to quit Mail, just cancel when asked to enter the password, take the account back online and try again.
3 - mail seems to resort the mail in my mailboxes at random time.  Several times a day, I must reset the sort to (a) by date; (b) by desending
Never seen that before.  That points more to some kind of possible corruption in your Mail data or preference files.

  • Several Updates Missing from "All Software Updates"

We've been using SCCM 2012 to patch our systems for a few months now and I thought everything was going smoothly until we got an audit back from out Security office about our boxes missing several patches, listed below.
So I go back to the SCCM console to check whether or not the patches were listed in the "All Software Updates" group and also the custom Software Update Group that I was deploying to the systems.  And to my surprise, none of the updates were
listed.  The only Software Update Point Classifications we have
not enabled are Tools, the rest are enabled. I've also verified that the Software Update Point Products have Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, R2, 2012, and 2012 R2 which encompass the OS of the servers that were found to be deficient.
Why are these updates not listed in SCCM?
How can we ensure they get listed in SCCM and applied to our servers?
How can we prevent this from happening in the future?
2750841: An IPv6 readiness update is available

    Hi,
I can't say I have checked all of the updates that you post here but the ones I did check and I normally deploy as well are not published in Windows Update and that is why you don't see them i either WSUS och Configuration Manager. They are Hotfixes and
not updates that are published there. So you need to download them and either import them using SCUP or deploy them using normal Software Distribution.

It is Correct for your Current OS = Leopard = 10.5.8
The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download...
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Snow Leopard Disc...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • Block, Remove, Delete an Update (KB2959936, KB2932354) from "All Software Updates"

First off I do not understand updates "KB2959936, KB2932354" as they install the program "Embedded Lockdown Manager" in my Enterprise Windows 7 and 8.1.  My understanding is Embedded Lockdown Manager is only for Windows Embedded....
I would like to know if there is a way to remove an update from the "All Software Updates" as I know how to block an update from not being deployed however I use the "Schedule Updates" feature for an image and as far as I understand it
makes all updates available which leaves me having to uncheck each update that I do not want in the WIM.  Since I would never want KB2959936 & KB2932354 to install EVER I would like to remove it entirely, how can I do that.

You can't remove it. Just don't put it into a deployed software update groups.
Alternatively, what I do for updates like this is create a new folder under the All Software Updates node and move unwanted updates there (I actually create multiple folders like one for Itanium, one for Beta, one for media center, etc.).
For these updates though, even if you accidentally deploy it though, there's no risk of anything bas because they aren't applicable to anything in your environment so adding them to a deployed update group no end effect.
Yes, it will bloat your WMI a bit because its part of the catalog that gets scanned and the results added to WMI, but there's nothing you can do about that (in a supported fashion anyway).
For WIM files and scheduled updates, DISM will properly recognize these as N/A and won't add them. You can verify this by going to your OfflineServicingMgr.log.

  • Issue getting SCCM to show KB2998527 (Russia timezone patch) in all software updates

    Hello,
We are having issues getting the September 2014 Russia timezone patch to show up in SCCM all software updates list.  My colleague did make sure to change WSUS to include it and he did manually get it.  When we go into SCCM, we are unable to still
get it to show up in the list even after doing an update sync.
Please let us know how we can get this update to show up in the list as we would like to deploy it company-wide.
    Thank you.
    Justin

    No, we did not.
At this point, I would suggestion contacting CSS directly for support. They can work with you to solve this problem.

  • HT3775 why do i have an avi movie and it does not play ? all software updates have been done

i have an avi movie and it will not play on my mac, updated to lion. all software updates have been done.

I went to VLC media, downloaded that. However the .avi movie file comes in email and I have only one option to download the movie. So I click that and the movie tries to open and I get the message that apple cannot open that type of avi movie. I try to drag it to the VCL 'drag video here' box and it does not work.
I went to mydlink and clicked on the 'set up for mac user' link and the page opens blank.
thank you for your feedback. i didn't really think i was going to get any support but you all have been so nice.
i will definitely provide more input when i make an inquiry next time.
in any event, i still cannot get it to work =(
There is also a good chance that the .avi is simply corrupt as often hapens with this format. I have often had .avis that simply will not open, no matter what program or converter you try using. It's a bummer, but being an older format, it is becoming more common.
    Good Luck

  • Lost My Contacts on my Bold when when accepting a software update in desktop mgr - Help

Hello, my bold had frozen so I tried to back it up.  I set up desktop manager which I hadnt used before and it connected with my bold and said a software update was required.  So i clicked on accept and I actually saw it going through the process of backing up and it said back up successful.  But whilst my phone is working again, and all my apps and ringtones are there, all my texts and more importantly my contacts are gone.  And when I looked under blackberry docs, there was no back up file showing.  Does this mean ive lost them for good?

Update notices a staggered. If everyone eligible for an iOS update was notified at the same time 400 million simultaneous updates would crash Apple's update servers. So devices only check periodically to stagger the load on the download servers.

  • All software updates in App Store say "Waiting..."

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and everything looked good. I opened software update and it told me I had some updates, and took me to the App Store to do them. I updated Numbers and Pages successfully, but then it told me I had some other software updates to do -- iPhoto 9.3.2, MacBook Pro EFI Firmware update 2.7, MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5, Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.0 and iMovie 9.0.7. I hit "Update All," and a few messages popped up about the firmware updates requiring a restart and that the screen would turn gray and I should leave it the heck alone and don't unplug the charger. Ok. Got it.
But the computer never restarted; the status on all of the updates changed to "Waiting..." and that is all. It's been about 15 minutes and still nothing. I tried to quit the app store thinking that would cancel the updates, but I get a message telling me the app store can't be quit until the OS updates are completed.
Do I need to try to restart the computer on my own? I'm afraid to force shut down because I know firmware updates are serious business. But it seems like it is taking an awful long time for the computer to restart on its own. I don't have any other programs running.
    Thanks for any help!

Force quitting the App Store during a software update download deletes any partial downloads already initiated. There is no way to pause a software update in Mountain Lion, which is a huge, glaring problem for anyone with a MacBook/MacBook Pro. If I'm in the middle of a large software update download, I can either force quit the App Store and lose any partial download or wait until the download is finished, which could be a long time if its a multi-gigabyte update. The whole point of having a laptop is the ability to take it with you and anything that prevents that ability must be changed.

  • Why should we pay for software updates

i know that nokia has turned to providing software updates on the internet. But based on my experience if someone has to update their firmware and is not under warranty they hav to pay for the update !
wait a second, i payed(read : invested) in a nokia phone and it dint even work properly for one straight day & to sort this problem(which started by me doing nothign but buying a nokia phone) i have to PAY for an update!
this means i as an investor am wrong? i should not buy nokia phones?
    YES
because as a corporate business nokia doesnt have the decency to correct their own mistakes.
    This is unethical business practice.
PS: i bought N73 from dubai and am in uk as of now, so cannot use the warranty to get a free update- but cmon its not my mistake that the software has bugs, nokia should take its responsibility.
    i regret buying a nokia

Nokia do sell phones all over the world, this is correct. But one thing you miss here is that they do not sell the same phones all over the world.
Phones sold in the US are for the US market, so this could mean they are CDMA in design, use such technology as BREW etc. Phones sold in the middle east and in APAC will also cater to the needs of this area, such as chtml and imode as well as different menu structures and character sets in the phones font.
Creating a support network that can repair a damaged phone or updgrade a faulty phone anywhere in the world would be a bad thing. For one thing, the cost. If such a service existed this would be passed on to the end user, this would mean customers in the US who never leave their country would be paying for the support services (even if never used) for a customer in China who regularly travels to Austrlia and may need a firmware update or repair done anywhere in between.
The only thing Nokia really needs to address is hardware repairs. It would not be beyond the realms of reasonable to have a hardware repair service at premium for imported phones (people travelling could wait until they arrive home or mail back to their country). However the update system that Nokia now has in place on the Internet and OTA simply means you do not need to go into a shop to update your phone. You either connect to your pc or just start the update from the phone itself.
One final note, no one pays for the update, you only pay for the service. This is why OTA updates are free (apart from the data charges) and so are Internet updates (apart for the monthly charge etc) Message Edited by karym6 on 15-Dec-2006

  • "Unexpected Error" stops all software updates, except for non-mac downloads

    Hello,
first of all i have tried to find answers to the question i have by searching through the forums. I searched for a couple days, but i have not found any answers as of yet.
When i go to download anything from software update the download will complete and as it is being installed it will stop and say that "the update 'blah-blah-blah' cant be installed - sorry, an unexpected error occurred."
it then says that what was downloaded was moved to the trash and so on.
i have downloaded a couple updates by themselves manually and they will go all the way till the actual installization and then stop and say there was an error.
i am fairly new to macs and i really have no idea whats going on. i have downloaded various programs, such as AIM, and videos and they all worked fine.
if any one could help it would greatly be appreciated.
thank you very much for your time.

mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Try the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

While viewing the updates that are a member of the software updates group, either sort by the "Expired" column or filter by Expired = Yex.  Select all expired updates, right click, and select 'Edit Membership".  Uncheck the checkbox for the software
update groups you are trying to remove them from.
    > *I seem to remember there was somewhere an option that mentioned expired
This option has to do with how long 'superseded' updates will remain available for deployment.  You can set under Administration > Site Configuration > Sites.  Right click on your site and select Configure Site Components > Software Update
Point.  The setting is on the "Supersedence Rules" tab.
However, Microsoft will also directly expire updates from time to time as well.  In general, this is normal and something you shouldn't worry about managing.  When the update has been expired by Microsoft, it is something you couldn't install even
by going to Windows Update, so you shouldn't worry trying to deploy them.  Instead, deploy the current updates instead of superseded ones.
    >How can I automate this (not automatically apply but using manually which updates to use and deploy at times I choose)?
For organizations with very simple Software Update processes, you could use an Automatic Deployment Rule to select updates based on a criteria, download the content to a deployment package, add the updates to a software update group, and create a deployment
to a collection.  That deployment can be 'available' and not required if you plan to hand install them later.
This documentation gives you an overview of how all the Software Update Management features work:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682168.aspx#BKMK_DeploymentWorkflows
And this blog post gives an example of using an ADR:
