Should I allocate my 250 laptop hard disk?

I bought new hdd for my laptop, its 250 gb, should I allocate before installation of new Windows? is there any advantages of partitions or ? cheers
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I always make a separate partition just for the operating system, so I can store files on the remaining larger partition when I decide to reinstall the OS.
This is nice in that you can wipe out the first partition and do a clean install of Windows while still having your data safely stored on the other partition(s).
With hard drives so cheap and large raid arrays being affordable on the desktop, partitions are a VERY good idea; I mean who wants to waste the time recopying over 2 Terabytes worth of bluray rips from optical media because your OS gets hosed somehow  DBAN/Active KDisk take a LONG time to write zeroes to entire 1TB drives too btw and diskpart using clean all, even worse.
*At least use diskpart to align the partition(s)

  • 640 GB Laptop Hard disk

    Hi.
I had a HP DV6 laptop with 640GB hard disk.
But my latptop hard disk got cracked and I need to replace it. I have my Windows 7 boot CD created.
Should I go ahead with any hard disk capacity 500GB or less or is it should be only 640GB.
    Can you advise?
    Best Regards
    Bala

    Hi,
Normally people buy bigger (capacity) not smaller, Well, should be ok when using a smaller HDD.

  • My laptop hard disk had to be replaced and now I can restart all CS4 programs except Acrobat 9 Pro ?

My laptop hard disk died and had to be replaced recently. I could restart all programs from the CS4 disk with the exception of Acrobat Pro 9? Can anyone advise if there is a different process to restarting Acrobat Pro 9, as it is odd considering there were no issues with the other CS4 software components?

By restart, I assume you mean reinstall. For CS, the installation for Acrobat is somewhat strange  relative to the rest of the CS package and requires other parts of CS to be activated or some such aspect. One of the announcements at the beginning of this forum addresses this issue (or used to). Otherwise, I suggest you check in the CS forum.

  • WAAS - WAE-512-K9 - SATA2 250 GB Hard disk not detecting

We had installed new WAE-512-K9 having 2*SATA2 250GB Hard disk as edge box in one of the branch. But during configuration, we have notified that both the hard disks are not getting detected. Both the disks 00 & 01 are inserted in the respective slots as mentioned in the cisco document. Hard disk LEDs are glowing intially when the device boots up, but later there is no LED indication. Please help me in resolving this issue.

    Hi Tammy,
The only thing you need is - disk delete-data-partitions once the unit reboots after the memory upgrade. This command re-aligns the CIFS and DRE partition to match with 8GB memory. This command should retain the software and config on the device, only repartition the caching partitions. Not sure what may have went wrong but it seems like at this moment you may want to re-install image using copy ftp install command on WAE. Other than that, your disks look helthy.

  • Should I Be Concerned About My Hard disk?

    Hey,
This is probably really stupid to ask, but I have a question about the Hard Disk on my MacBook... I just bought it the other day and knew it was a 60GB MacBook when I bought it. As of right now it has around 38.74GB available, but that number seems to fluctuate throughout the day. So, I'll be using it and it will be at 38.8GB, goes down to the 38.74, but after I shut it down for the night and I turn it back on in the morning, it's back up to 38.8GB. Is this normal or should I be concerned?
    Thanks in advance...

In your utilities folder there is an application called Activity Monitor. It will show you a pie chart of your drive as to what is free and used.
A lot of space is used up out of the box by things like Garage Band loops, the Jingle library, iDVD, iWeb, and iMovie themes, etc. If you never plan on using some of these you can do a re-install of the system from the DVDs and select custom at the very end to uncheck them. Also there are language translations, printer drivers, etc.
If you want a more granular approach to finding what space is used on your drive how, then you want WhatSize.

  • 250 GB hard disk in C200

    First of all, hello everybody!
My hard disk is about to die (getting lots of CRC errors), so I was wondering does the 3000 C200 8922-BJG model support 250GB hard disks? On this site it says only up to 120GB, but I thought it could be a bit outdated or something...
Second thing I'd like to know is what's the maximum memory supported (over there it says 2GB).
    Thank you for your time!
    Srecko

Well, after doing more research I don't see a reason why it would not be possible. Now if I only knew if I could put more RAM inside...

  • Should Hp Laptop Hard Disk set to never be inactive?

Hi i  was wondering whether i should set my hard drive to never be inactive due to everytime there is a spin-up operation on the disk, there is more stress placed on the HDD.
I would like to know whether i should t set my HDD to never be  inactive and what would be the effects of doing so on the HDD and the system as a whole.
    Thank you!

If you set it to never be inactive there will also be stress. I am thinking you mean should you set power properties to "never" for the hard drive shutdown? I say no....you might want to sleep or hibernate or just rest a bit. The spinup operation does cause stress but so does staying on in standby. Would you leave the car running in the garage all the time to avoid ever having to start it up cold? Same idea.

  • How should i allocate the right RAM and disk space to windows through boot camp or parallels ?

i am trying to understand how you need to set things up when trying to run windows from a mac ( using bootcamp / parallels ). i want to understand the implications around RAM.
i have a mac with 1terra SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and if i want to install windows i need to partition and allocate memory and disk space for windows.
now i would be running on windows :
    cad 2015
    revit / rhino
photoshop and some other graphic softwares
    so my questions are:
how do i decide how much space should be allocated to windows and once i decide that, can i change it later ?
how do i decide what RAM should be allocated to windows. and can i also change that in the future ?
now lets say i allocated 8 GB of RAM for winddows using bootcamp, does that mean that every time i log into my mac through OS, it will only be using 8GB of the total RAM ?
here's my last question : i have my parallels software yet to be installed, just as the windows 8 software. now should i use bootcamp to install windows ? could i install windows using parallels ? if yes which is better to use ?

    1. Windows needs 60GB for good performance, add the needs of the apps you intend to use and I would say no less than 100GB. (it can be changed later but it is not an easy task unless you pay for Camp Tune)
    2. You do not allocate Ram to Windows in Boot Camp. Windows will use all of it (64bit Windows) or 4GB (32bit Windows)
    3. See 2
    4. Use Boot Camp, Parallels will not allow Windows to run at full speed.
    General Notes:
    1. Make a complete backup of your Mac before you start! (do not skip this)
    2. Read the Boot Camp directions, then read them again.

  • Sony Hard disk error. Warranty services ?

Recently I bought a hard disk E-1 1TB and now it doesn't show up when I connect. I tried in other laptops also. I have invoice bill is it enough to avail warranty services or warranty card is also required? If I dont have warranty card how can I get it ? Any possible way of getting warranty services?
Never expected this kind of product from Sony

If you have warranty and proper invoice, they you should not worry about your faulty hard disk. First you must make sure the hard disk problem with local technical person and then raise up complaint to replace the product.

  • Help! full up hard disk

Sorry to ask such a dumb question but my 250 GB hard disk is now nearly full up. Thing is I don't know why. I have a few photos and and all my music on i tunes but apart from that there should be loads of space. Can anyone suggest what may be filling it up and how do I remove it

    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
I'm old fashion. I still keep my photos in a photo album. So when people come over my house, they can actually "touch" & "feel" my photos without me running to my computer to "show my photos".
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or a .Mac account to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days. I store all 5000+ of my music (mp3s) files & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use Spotlight, Google &/or MacGoogle to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • How to ADD a second external Hard Disk ?

    Hi,
I'm using an iMac 1,42 GHZ PowerPC G4 mini.
With an external 250 GB hard disk.
Can I ADD an extra external hard disk ?
    And HOW ?
Thanks very much for an answer !
    John

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You probably have a Mac mini, as an iMac is a different system.
Using firewire connections, you can daisy chain drives together. So, you hook one into the mini, then hook the next into a firewire port on the external hard drive connected to the mini. If your current hard drive is connected via firewire, you should be able to add another firewire drive by plugging into your existing external hard drive.
If you're using a USB drive, you can buy a USB hub that will allow you to connect more than one USB device.

  • Hard Disk G6-1C57dx

    Hello Team
I have bought pavilion g6-1c57dx model from USA in Nov-2012.This was working fantastic. But now It's showing error "press ctrl+alt+del"
and restart your system. Whenever i start my laptop it shows same error message and it get started when i press ctrl+alt+del.
I called up customer support in india/chandigarh as i am from chandigarh. They said we can not help you as this model is not supported in india.
They suggested me to send back to USA. I requested them to help me so i can get my laptop work fine But they did not respond. I am very DISAPPOINTED from your service.
I was very happy as i will never find problem with HP. I have also bought anouther same model from USA for one of my friend. Now am afraiding may that model will also get damaged. The customer support told my laptop hard disk has gone and you need to replace it and it's not possible for me to send this laptop back to USA. I had big loss because of this issue. Please guide me how i can replace my hard disc as this is with in warranty. this is really bad thing i need to spent money even my laptop is with in warranty.if need to buy in india then which hard disk will be compatible with this model. Please guide me. But after this i will never order any model or suggest my friends to go for HP.

do you get some other information also on the screen when it gives info such as ALt+CTRL+Del ?
if yes, please share that too... it will help forums to assist you.
alternatively, please press f10 when you turn on the PC. this should take you to BIOS. please test the HDD for the errors. if the hdd is Good, more chances of OS curruption only and hopefully you can recover OS yourself by pressing f11 key at the time of boot. remember - all the data stored in your HDD gets erased when using complete recovery.
if the BIOS self test gives Failure code - please have the unit repaired as recommended by HP or if you can replace teh HDD, buy a new HDD from market and install in this PC.
    Good Luck !!!

  • My Acer Aspire 3680 Hard Disk Failed

How Would I fix a failed hard disk, and there's no Operating System on my Laptop,
What should I do to fix the hard disk, I have no recovery cds at all, If I bring My Acer Aspire 3680
To Best Buy will they fix it for free even though my warrenty is expired? Is that possible?

    Hi Casey
If it is out of warranty, BB will charge to replace to drive, plus the price of the operating system cd's, plus the price of installing the hard drive and installing Windows.
Do you get any error messages that shows the hard drive has failed? Does it make a loud clicking noise?
The Acer 3680 was a very inexpensive entry level laptop. It might not be worth the money that BB will charge to repair it.
