Should I be able to charge my battery when watching video/playing music on my computer?

I recently have been having trouble with my macbook pro, says it's an 8.1 using OS X version 10.6.8.
The other day, it would not charge unless I shut the cover for the computer. Took it to an authorized Apple repair place and they gave it a quick look, said everything looks as though it's running normally. They reset some power battery thing (I'm not a technical person, obviously) and then it was charging in the store when the cover was open. Fine.
I bring it home, try charging it and it does show it's charging, only it says it will take almost 12 hours to get a full charge. And it will stop charging when playing video or music.
It's really upsetting because I would think this is something pretty simple that should work. It's plugged in, has power, it should charge.
Any suggestions?

It should charge independetely from the fact that it you are watching videos or not (at least mine does), eventhough it might take longer.
Are you sure the charger is ok? Mine started giving me some problems and it would charge some times and others it didn't. Therefore I thought it was the computer and not the charger (usually they just burn and death is a quick, not a process). Turns out it was some contact thing. I am sure that you established the right connection to the video watching, but maybe you just seat more confortable in the sofa and the contact is lower...?
Also, people at the apple store did not encourage me at all to buy a more powerful charger. They said it is best to use the same power it came with...

I agree. I HATE having to wait for the battery to charge on my new Palms and Macs before using them - I guess GOD teaches us patience in strange ways (hee, hee).

  • Why isn't my iPad2 charging its battery when connected with my iMac?

Why isn't my iPad2 charging its battery when connected with my iMac?

A lot of computers, especially older ones (I don't know how old yours is), don't provide enough power through their USB ports in order to charge the iPad - it may still be charging, but at a low rate (it may charge quicker if the iPad's screen is off). If you want to charge it at a reasonable rate then the wall charger is better.

No. Photo Stream is no accessible from iCloud.com.

  • After updating iOS on my iPod touch 4th gen my Philips speaker dock DC290B/37 no longer charges the iPod.  It will play music but not charge, is there anyway to find out if Apple is working on an update/fix?

after updating iOS on my iPod touch 4th gen my Philips speaker dock DC290B/37 no longer charges the iPod.  It will play music but not charge, is there anyway to find out if Apple is working on an update/fix?

    Try:
    - Reset the dock
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
Otherwise you are out of luck. Apple is not making any more update for the 4G.
Also check with Phillips. Maybe they have an firmware update available

  • [SOLVED] Laptop battery dies when watching video

So I have come a long way, but still struggle with powersaving settings.  When I watch video, specificaly youtube, or work with a virtual machine, my laptop gets hot and the battery gets drained within a few minutes.  I have followed instructions on the wiki for CPU scaling, laptop-mode-tools, etc but cannot figure out what to do to keep the laptop running cool and efficient when under load.  When I am not doing anything outside of websurfing, my laptop runs cool, and the battery seems ok.  Anyone out there have pointers on what I could check, or how to keep the power settings in check when watching videos or working in VMs? Well it sounds like you have a very serious hardware issue if you are being literal. XD As for Flash, the reason it is not available on Apple's products is because it is a monster battery eater. Running VMs is the same, you now have two whole OS running as well as an emulation layer. As for how to best use a battery for long life, I'll just point you to the battery university: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/
    Hope you learn something useful.

  • My iPod Battery only last about an hour when watching videos. Why??

Whenever I watch a video on my iPod which I got about a week ago the battery dies very quickly. An example is I have Lost on it and I only can watch an episode and a half before my iPod dies.
    30gb   Windows XP Pro

Thats perfectly normal. The 14 hour battery life is for playing music and even with playing music u only get about 10 hours if ur lucky.
i usually watch an hour and a half movie and the battery will be at the red bar. but once its at the red bar it still lasts a while. dont worry its all normal.
the reason it drains so much battery is because the backlight uses alot of power wen ur playing a movie.
    =)

A lot of computers (especially older ones) generally do not provide enough power to their USB ports to charge the iPad at a sufficient rate - it may still be charging slowly, and should be a bit quicker if the iPad's screen is off (if you leave it for a while and then disconnect it from your computer you may find that it's battery percentage has gone up). The wall charger is usually the most efficient way to charge the iPad.
And for info using all capitals is considered to be SHOUTING

  • HT1476 when is it best to charge the battery, when it is completly dead, almost dead or at any time you want a full chargre?

When is it best to charge your battery for and Ipot touch 4th generation? when it is completly dead, almost dead, or any time you want full charge.

Letting the battery completly drain is not that good. Otherwise, just charge when you want.

  • MBP has "Service Battery" then disappears. Also screen turns black once in awhile when watching videos.

My MBP recently has the "Service Battery" notice, but disappears after I charged my laptop and hasn't returned yet. Also, my screen turns black once in awhile when I am watching videos, but cannot get it back lit so I have to restart it.
Do I really need to "service my battery?" And what do I have to do in regards to my scrren turning black?

Service Battery means replace battery as soon as possible.
Occasional black screen problem may be related to the battery condition.
You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Power related issues can be  resolved often by resetting SMC.

  • I have an ipod touch  and it will not longer charge on the dock it only plays music

I was uploading music to my ipod touch 4th generation (I only use this ipod to stay docked all the time to my speackers)
Since I updated my ipod touch to ios 6.1.6 it does not charge it only plays music but it does not charge why is this happening I think is a bug that has the ios 6.1.6 I dont have old speackers I brought them in 2012 they are the sony RDP-XF100ip, it allways worked fin and scince I updated it it does not work.
I also have an old ipod nano and I thought that the dock burned but it did charged the ipod nano
    Thanks.

    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    Sometmes this works
Otherwise go to the dock manufacture's support site. Sometimes an iOS update breaks compatibility and you will have to wait for either an iOS update (very unlikely) or an update to the firmware on the dock

  • Is it bad to charge the battery when it is full?

    ^Titlte^
Im using a 2012 13 Inch MacBook Pro. I play WoW and Diablo on it, while I do, I keep the charger in it. Is it bad for the computer if the battery is full and the charger is in?

Not at all. The battery and charger have built in circuitry that prevents damage if the battery is full when the charger is plugged in. That said, it's good to run down your battery to about 15 or 20% now and then just to keep it working properly.
