Should I be able to see networked computers in Finder?

Forgive me if this is totally obvious.
Should I be able to click on Network in Finder and see networked PCs on my LAN? I can share and transfer files from a laptop to this iMac, but I don't have the laptop with me right now. I'm trying to see a different desktop PC right now. Under Network, then Servers, I only see iMac.local.
I don't know if this is a problem or if it's just how things work...

Hi,
Yes you should see them if they are Sharing and on the same Subnet.
If you know the IP of the other Laptop, try In finder, select Go menu>Connect to Servers..., then on the iMac, type in smb://ip.of.the.pc, like...
smb://10.0.1.5
smb://192.168.1.3
Find IP on computers...

  • Should i be able to see interlacing on the computer display?

I'm trying to verify if i have things set up properly.
If i'm working in a timeline that is DV NTSC and i've brought in elements from after effects and as well have moving images within FCP, should i be able to see the interlaced lines in FCP?
It looks okay on the broadcast monitor but i'm trying to figure out if interlacing on ftg/renders should be visible on the cinema display.
a simple yes, no and a sentence if you've got the time would be nice.
    thanks

You can observe the presence of interlacing on a computer display only if the Canvas (or Viewer) are set to display 100% size and the video is paused. The interlacing will appear as a comb effect on moving objects. You can not observe interlacing with a computer display on running video.

  • Should I be able to see a priority change using a mutex priority ceiling

If I have a program which uses a mutex lock in solaris 9 which is set up to protect/priority ceiling of 5 and kick it off using priocntl with a priority of 11 and RT, I can look at top and see that it has priority 111. So my process is running real time. I then use a second xterm and wait till the program hits the lock portion of the code. If I do a priocntl -d pid, it is still priority 11. I know it is in the lock because there is a printf and a sleep of 20 seconds. Should I be able to see the priority go to 5? How can I prove the priority inheritance off the mutex lock is working in a test program? Thanks for any insight.

I also tried it with a priority ceiling of 50, figured out that RT priorities worked the reverse of regular priority, the higher the priority number, the higher the priority. I still however am not able to prove the priority inheritance occured. Anybody got any thoughts on how to prove it is working properly.

Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.

But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself.

  • TS3992 should I be able to see my photos on the cloud

Where are my photos on the cloud should I be able to see them.

No.  Photos are only stored in the cloud if you included them in a backup, in which case you can't view them, you can only restore them and everything else in the backup in case your device needs to be restored, OR when using photo stream, but that's not a storage or viewing service, but a syncing service to get pics from one device to another.  Now, there is "shared photo stream", and if this is what you have been doing, then google it and learn how it works.  Otherwise, icloud is not a photo service like flickr and others like it.

No. Photo Stream is no accessible from iCloud.com.
Photo Stream is meant to sync photos between devices and is not in the cloud storage.
You may be able to access Photo Stream from your computer:
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and iPhoto 9.2.2 or Aperture 3.2.3 or later

  • Seeing networked computers on other network

I don't know if this is a problem or not, but I have recently noticed that I can see my wife's Macbook as a shared computer in Finder when I am out of town, at a hotel, for example. I have changed the security settings on her computer so that only her login or my login will allow access to anything.
Is this normal to be able to see her Macbook from anywhere? Is there something that has been set up to allow me to see it? Can anyone else see it?
    Thanks for any input.

    No replies out there?
I can see my wife's Mac under 'shared' in finder while I am in a hotel and she is at home on the home network. The home network is protected. How is it possible to see her computer from another unrelated network? Is there any danger in this? Can anyone else see her computer? I have her security settings and sharing set up properly.

  • Lost local network computers in finder and unable to change workgroup

On my G5, iMac works fine, both OS X10.5.5. After a update from Mac, I think it was Safari, iTunes, and a Security Update, I rebooted the computer and now can no longer view local windows network computers.
I checked WINS in Network settings and my NetBIOS name is grayed out, in the workgroup box, it is empty, I click on the drop down and my workgroup name is there I select it but it is not saved. Didn't make a difference.
I was able to use Go in Finder, Connect to Server and put in "smb:// computer name or share" and connect no problem and the computer shows up in finder, but only the one I typed in.
If I click Go in Finder, Connect to Server, then choose Browse, it dumps me back to Finder Network view and of course none of the Windows shares or computers show except the one I put in with SMB://
I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions, rebooted to no avail.
Anyone have an idea what went wrong and can point me in the right directions to get the Windows Computers back in Finder?
    Thanks,
    Bill...

Ok This is what I did in trying to fix my problem and it seem to work, although I have yet to turn the G5 off or reboot yet and was able to get Windows shares showing back up.
System Preferences, Network.- Location: First choose Duplicate Services of Automatic, then I renamed Automatic to my workgroup name ( although I don't think name is important).
Then chose the Advance button and under TCP/IP changed Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address. I put in a static address (192.168.1.200) that was out of the range that the router would give out (my router range for DHCP is 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.100).
Then clicked WINS and selected my workgroup name, closed the windows and saved... Worked right off the bat in finder!
Don't know the Why's or How Come's but it worked and that is all I needed! Maybe some one could explain?

  • Can't see Network in the Finder

I'm on a Windows network at my office. Before upgrading to Mavericks, I was able to see the Network in the finder sidebar, along with nodes (users) on the network. That functionality is gone, as is my ability to mount network drives from within applications. Any suggestions on how to regain the Network in the Finder sidebar?

I can no longer see my MacPro from my MBP in the
    finder's "Network" window.
I can still connect using "Connect to Server" and
    typing the IP manually.
From the MacPro I can see the MBP just fine.
I repaired permission, ran cocktail etc...
    Any ideas?
Apple uses a service called "Bonjour" to discover devices on a network. Bonjour piggybacks on the mDNS service, meaning it broadcasts on port 5353. Apple is sensitive to being called "chatty", because it's past device discovery methods were indeed chatty. Bounjour has built in some passivity, and devices will delay their broadcasts if logic detects they're not needed. Sometimes all it takes is clicking on the Network tab.
It all boils down to 1 of 3 things:
    1) The MacPro is not sending out Bonjour discovery packets.
    2) The MacPro is sending out Bonjour discovery packets, but the discovery packets are not reaching the MBP. This is highly doubtful, since the process is working in the opposite direction.
    3) The packets reach the MBP but it's not responding to them.
There's a great (and free) utility called Bonjour Browser, and it's available on versiontracker. If you run it on the MBP, you'll have a much better ideas as to what's happening.
My best guess is that the MacPro is not sending out packets. This would either be due to not having anything to share (File Sharing turned off) or logic which dictates that it's been sending out these packets for a long time so they're delayed for 30 minutes to reduce chattiness.

  • Should I be able to see other peoples airports on my network thru airport utility?

After upgrading to Lion, when I pull up airport utility, It gives me a list of peoples time cap[sules and airport extremes. This is on my home network. I'm not referring to people's wifi networks in my neighborhood, but actual apple routers listed under my airport utility. Why did this stat happening?

Yes, chances are excellent that they cannot, especially if the following three things are followed: 1) The most obvious is to not give out the password, 2) The wireless is protected with either WPA or WPA2 standard encryption, and 3) That you use a non-dictionary password for that wireless password.

  • Inability to See Network Computers with PPPoE

I am using a MacBook, connected to a Linksys WRT150N wireless router. I am also using PPPoE to connect to the internet; the PPPoE settings are in the router, not in the computer.
I would like to connect to computers in my LAN, but am not able to when PPPoE is turned on. (N.B. - I have this problem whether or not I connect to the network via the router or directly.) Turning PPPoE every time I want to connect to other computers in my network is obviously not an option. Are there any thoughts on my problem?
(It is also important to note that I had the same problem with my iBook, running Tiger.)

In both cases (cable directly attached or with a router), you have a firewall enabled between you and external network.
I'm pretty sure that you also have DHCP going because if you didn't, you would be getting an 'auto-ip' address (something starting with 169). I suspect you're currently getting something like 192.168.1.x? DHCP doesn't cross router boundaries (unless configured - and a personal router wouldn't be configured to do that).
If you want to make this work and keep your router in the mix, I suspect at the minimum you'll need to configure the router to consider your machine on the 'DMZ'. There should be a menu in there someplace that does this.
When you setup an internal host as 'DMZ' on these routers, you're basically just thrown out on the external side of the router. So be sure to protect your system with a local firewall.
As for when you're directly on the wire without the router, I'm not 100% certain how OS X handles its routing on PPPoE. Remember, with PPPoE, you're building a tunnel over a foreign network to a specific location, and then sending all traffic over the tunnel. The traffic wouldn't be able to break out of that tunnel to go to other network hosts by itself, so the OS would have to do what's called a 'split tunnel' and allow some traffic to stay out of the tunnel (the traffic that isn't working for you) while the rest travels in the tunnel (to the Internet).
Hopefully with this information, you can re-arrange/re-configure things to get you going. Just be aware of your host security in doing this.
Oh - and I'm heading out to work. Just a courtesy so you're not waiting for another reply this morning.

  • WRT54GC cannot see network computers

    Hi all,
I've been trying to setup my home network having one wired PC and another one wireless.  After numerous attempts I haven't managed.
I use DHCP and both computers have valid access to internet, belong to the same workgroup - but don't see each other.
At first I thought there was an issue having one computer wired and another one wireless.  So I gave up.
Tonight I connected the notebook using wire and on my surprise computers still couldn't have seen each other.  All setting have been configured as the desktop machine used to be on the network and the notebook is daily used on other networks without problem.
Both machines have valid IPs assigned but cannot ping each other!  They see the router properly but not each other.
Is there anything I have to go through in the router configuration?  Please help.
    Regards,
    AM.

hi , there is nothing specific in the router that you can possibly change for this issue.....however try this for the wireless PC.....go to the wireless section , and then to advanced wireless settings and disable "AP isolation"...
also check if you have any firewalls enabled on your PC 's

  • Can't see network computers that are sitting at their logon prompt

I have an Airport wireless network in my home. My two computers (one Imac, one Macbook) connect to the internet through the Airport connection.
From my Macbook, I can ping the Airport at 10.0.1.1 and get a response. I can ping the Macbook itself (10.0.1.3) and get a good response, too. But when I try to ping the Desktop Imac at 10.0.1.2, I get nothing but "host is down" messages, even though the desktop is booted up and sitting at its logon prompt. If I go to the Desktop and log on, and then come back to the Macbook and ping the desktop again, everything is fine.
Is this the way things are supposed to work -- i.e. a computer system is not available on the network unless someone's logged into it? This seems strange.

In case anyone cares, I found the solution myself.
Under Network in System Preferences, Show->Airport. Then, click "Options".
One of the options says to "Disconnect from wireless networks when I log out". This option was checked on the Desktop but not the Laptop. Don't know why.
Anyway, when I unchecked it, I was now able to connect to the Desktop, even when it was at its logon prompt.
Now, if I could just get the dumb things to wake up across the network ... but I understand this is not doable when the computers are connected wirelessly. Something about the wireless standard not supporting it.
