Should I be concerned about pop-up ads on my mac? I started getting them about a week ago.

I havn't noticed any pop-up ads in the past. The firefox I use also has the pop-up blocker on.
Is there any good software out there to protect the mac from pop-ups or adware?

I should add before the upgrade, the pop-ups would occur behind the browser, now they occur on the front of the browser.

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:

However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.

There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!

Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially *********** sites.
2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program.
3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through an AV application.
4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
5. Stop using LimeWire. LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications.

Hi, My macbook gets quite hot and is almost unbearable on the lap. Should I be concerned about this? I have heard about this issue and I wanted to know if it can be ignored.

Mine averages about 160F inside, so the case is bound to get quite warm. Use an insulator between your lap and the MacBook. I bought this EZ Laptop Riser for my MacBook. Works great on your lap. It's well built, keeps your lap cool and helps dissipates some of the MacBook's heat.

Should I Be Concerned About Yellow Tint?

So I have an iPad 3 which I purchased about a week ago and it has the yellow tint. I've been reading on the web that it may go away after a while as it has to do with the glue holding the layers of glass together.
So do I wait patiently or do I exchange?

if it bugs you that much you can take it in...or you can wait. You have up to a year for manufacturer's defects. Or you can call the Apple store, register that you have the issue and then wait to see if it goes better. I have no experience with this, but surely they'll make a note that your device has the issue but that you're not ready to exchange yet.

You can't install 9.2.1 or earlier on any Mac that is only Mac OS X bootable. In fact you need to use the restore disks which came with those Macs to install 9.2.2 on those Macs. 8.6 is only possible to install on Macs which came with 8.6 or earlier. The 9.1 disk may be useful for your 1999 PowerMac G4, but won't be of any use for a 2006 Powerbook G4.

Cannot get my "log in" button to work for online banking. Stopped working about a week ago. Checked Time Warner Cable and the Bank and they said it's on your end. Can you help?

I have been online banking with TD Bank for years now and have never had a problem getting into the log in. About a week ago when I would click on the log in button, nothing would happen however I can get into every other link on that site. I contacted TD Bank and they said that my account was fine and I was not locked out and there were no security issues. I then called Time Warner and they checked my service and said nothing was wrong with my service and that it sounded like it was from my server since I was going through Firefox, I should call you guys and see if it is the problem.

The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Linda's Computer 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22).
I tried resetting the Time Capsule and connecting with an ethernet cable, although the Ariport Utility says everything is working fine through WiFi.

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

This is a good question. It's possible your Xserver isn't configured for the correct mouse type. Try logging into a command line console (no X11 running). Run /usr/bin/X11/X -configure. It should create an Xorg configuration file in your root directory.
Copy this to /etc/X11/Xorg.conf and try restarting your Xserver. The file it creates might require some tweaking.

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.

Slow macbook pro since the airport security patch and last OS update about a week ago..

Hi, my Macbook Pro has slowed down to a crawl on the internet since the airport security patch and OS update about 1 week ago. I am using Firefox 3.6.17 and have tried all versions up to date (but 3.6.17 is the best). Same issues with Safari too. I am using an Airport wireless modem also so should not be any issues with compliance. Local programs seem to run OK... but the internet is slow enough to grow a beard... Do they have a patch for this issue. It only started after the updates. Was blazing fast until that.

How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
