I know ClamXav is free from the apps store dont know yet about Sophos.
The AppStore version of ClamXav does not have a real-time scanning capability, if you think you need that. You can download the full version from here, which is also free.
If you are asking if Sophos is free, the one downloaded from here is.
SInce you seem to be asking everybody, I don't recommend any particular one over the other. I have both installed on this computer along with VirusBarrier X5 and MacScan. I don't currently use any of them routinely, but they are here if I should ever need them. Real-time scanning is turned off, but I keep all but VB up-to-date (my VB subscription expired a few years ago).
Full disclosure: I do uncompensated tech support for the ClamXav Forum.

    you're welcome....
    also check activity monitor - all processes - see what's using up most of your cpu resources under % CPU....
    highlight anything that's really high and hit quit process......anything over 10% is considered high - unless it's your browser....
    good luck...

    By the way, I have tried shutting of the display switching in the power settings.  That was basically the only real answer I found anywhere.  It didn't work.

  • Can't run some programs after system restore to remove virus

    Hi,
    My duaghter's Toshiba had a nasty virus that pretended to be an antivirus software product, that snuck in, between the time her default Norton service expired and I had the time to install Trend.
    Could not remove it using Trend, so upon advice from a friend, decided to do a windows system restore to a point prior to the infection. This worked successfully, and the virus is gone, but now she can't run some programs, I have tried to install Trend again, but that fails as it says that you have to uninstall Norton first. But I can't run Norton, or uninstall it, and some folders on C: are no longer accessible.
    Should I do a complete Toshiba system restore (ie back tofactory settings? This seems a drastic measure, but the issue is beyond my meagre PC skills.
    Thanks,
    Graeme

    Thanks for your reply.
    The main issue is that we cannot run the Norton Anitvirus that came prepackaged with the laptop, and we can't uninstall it either. If you try to perform either action, nothing happens.
    However, when we try to install a new antivirus software, Trend, the install fails because it detects that Norton is installed, and indicates that we must uninstall Norton before we can complete the Trend installation. But we cannot unistall Norton for some reason.
    I am getting my daughter to check what else doesn't work, but Microsoft Office works OK, and most of the games she installed seem to work. I just don't understand why Norton won't work now, and why we cannot uninstall it. I don't know if its due solely to the system restore, or some combination of events. The introductory 3 mont Norton licence has expired some time ago, but it should still let us uninstall. I have also tried to unistall through the Control panel, but nothing happens when I try that either.
    Is there any way to force the uninstall of Norton? Or is a factory reset the only viable option now?
    Thanks,
    Graeme

  • Has someone installed some kind of data logging *SPYWARE*  on my iMac?

    I found a file I don't recognize sitting in my ~/Library/Preferences folder called "HOME Preferences".
    This 4K file contains this:
    UserLocale=en_US
    LastUsedDeviceTypeName=go720
    UserPatchFeedback=0
    UserPatchFeedbackAddress=
    ConfirmedAnonymousDataLogging=1
    HaveSendAnonymousDataloggingReply=1
    BackupPromptDevices=M64048D01413
    StartUpWindowBounds=-7,22,1816,999
    .. and that's all. IS this a symptom of some kind of spyware installed or attempted to be installed without my knowledge by someone else who had access to my machine? The datalogging settings bother me as does a setting for user feedback of 0 which sounds like a setting to keep the presence of a datalogger quiet from popping up or showing. How can I figure out using unix commands in the terminal or something more convenient what application this preference file belongs to? This file has an install date of late 2008, so if someone is spying on me, they've been doing it over a year without my knowledge--that disturbs me a bit. I was nosing around trying to figure out why this G4 macMini which is supposed to be recording my two household security cameras has been running so poorly. I have no idea what this file installed on it is all about. I don't believe it to be related at all to the Security Spy software I use for recording the cameras feeds to hard disk.

    First off, don't panic.
    'Data logging' can mean many things, and take many forms - not all of which are nefarious.
    If you think about it, it would to be a pretty dumb hacker who infiltrates your machine to install a logger and leaves such a big, bold footprint behind.
    That said, I don't know what this relates to, specifically, but a quick google on some of those keywords (especially the LastUsedDeviceTypeName) hints at something to do with a TomTom GPS unit. Did you install/attach a TomTom GPS back in 2008 when this preference file was attached?
    Data logging is often used in GPS terms to track paths/routes, so it would seem to make sense.

  • Protect from Spyware and Adware

    How do I protect my Mac mini from Internet Spyware and Adware?

    Problem with virus scanners is they need system wide access to do their jobs and when you run it on systems with no viruses thinking you are safe you get a bit smug and things can bite you in the butt:
    ClamAV suffers from problems with at least four of the components used for processing different file formats, according to researchers.
    "During the processing of TNEF, CHM, and FSG formats an attacker is able to trigger several integer overflows that allow attackers to overwrite heap data to obtain complete control of the system," in an advisory [pdf].
    ClamAV installations are vulnerable by default and could be triggered via an email, according to researchers.
    ClamAV is found on a wide variety of platforms. It is included in Mac OS X Server by default and has numerous Windows implementations; all of these derivatives are likely to be vulnerable.
    That was back when I bought this mac (only a few months back) and thought I needed to run Spyware utilities everyday and Antivirus like on the PC. After reading up on the virus situation on OS X I finally settled on running Little Snitch and let everyone else beta test the Antivirus market for OS X.
    Thank to this security scan site, I get the following:
    We have determined that your IP address is
    This is the public IP address that is visible to the internet.
    Note: this may not be your IP address if you are connecting through a router, proxy or firewall.
    Trying to gather information from your web browser...
    Operating System = Macintosh PowerPC Mac OS X
    Browser = AppleWebKit 412.7
    Trying to find out your computer name...
    Unable to determine your computer name!
    Trying to find out what services you are running...
    Unable to detect any running services!
    All this from doing absolutely nothing. Well, I did buy a good wireless router which out of the box had everything enabled by default (double firewall, stealth mode, etc.)

  • Bios protection from infection with virus or bios recovery of Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545

    I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545 laptop. Among downloads there are no bios images but only backup cd iso file. Does laptop bios somehow protected from beeing infected with virus when OS installed on laptop is infected? If not, is there a way to recover bios from usb flash? Or is there some other way to recover already infected bios without help of technical support center?

    Dear Wyacheslav1
    Welcome in lenovo community
    Actually there is no relationship between the Virus and the BIOS also the BIOS cannot be infected such as the windows . So if you have any debut that your machine has been attacked by a Virus, you can install any antivirus application to scan for this virus and to protect the machine from such attack
    Thanks

  • XP SP2 with boot camp - some kind of protection?

    I have been trying to install XP SP2 Home OEM on the MBP (3 Gen) through bootcamp, but it doesn't seem to install.
    First I tried with the superdrive and it just made some noise and then pretended the CD is not in the drive. When OSX booted it just kept ejecting it. I always knew the MBP superdrive was crap, so I attached an extenal USB DVD Drive. When booting the LED blinked on it a couple times (indicating reading) then the apple logo on the gray screen appeared and the laptop crashed (no action for 30 min, just gray screen and apple logo + fans were at high RPMs).
    What is wrong? I tried this same CD on 2 other laptops and they booted off it normally.

    It sounds as if the XP install disc that you started your SlipStream build with was an upgrade and not a full install disc. For SlipStream to work with BootCamp, you must start with a XP SP1 Full install disc.

  • Which version of version of virtualbox should I be running to upgrade  OSX Mavericks from 10.9 to 10.9.1?

    In the upgrade to Mavericks 10.9 to 10.9.1, it says if you have system software modifications, the upgrade may fail.  I'm using VirtualBox 4.3.2.   4.3.4 is available.  VirtualBox said it did have system modifications when installed--some drivers I think.  I am used to SnowLeopard (no prompt there).
    I have Time Machine.  Should I try to restore my system back to before when VirtualBox was installed?  Can I disable VirtualBox's system modifications to install Mavericks 10.9.1?  Just wondering which order I should install these two pieces of software in.  I'm not saying that anything failed yet.  I just don't want to be faced with a non-working system.  I had enough of that with Dell/Alienware.  I am fairly sure that VirtualBox didn't get copied over when I got my mac mini to replace SL on Intel Core Duo (32-bit) iMac.

    Instead, upgrade VirtualBox to the most recent version, and then install OS X 10.9.1.
    All virtual machine apps use kernel drivers that may cause issues with OS X. If you still get that message after updating to the latest VirtualBox version, uninstall it > http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch02.html#idp53416960
    You do not need to restore your Mac to a previous status when VirtualBox was not there

    None.

    They may not be compatible with firefox - it's most likely an add-on. Or if you could explain further it would help better.

  • Is the level of protection from intrusion, malware, viruses, and trojans materially better when using a Sonicwall TZ 105 with a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.5 than with a properly configured MacBook Pro alone?

    One of our IT engineers at work mentioned the security of our home networks could be substantially improved by using a properly configured Sonicwall TZ 105 with the comprehensive security option (sold as a separate item from the Sonicwall hardware). I am interested in the experiences and advice of any MacBook Pro users who have such a device in their home networks. Is the protection the device and the add-on monitoring afford that much greater than that of a properly configured MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5, and in general, even if the security provided is significantly greater, is it necessary for the home user or is it overkill?
    Thank you
