Should i be turning off my computer every night

should i be turning off my computer every night

Hi,
This would be largely down to personal choice.  I would turn it off - why waste electricity on something you're not using

  • Some hacker (that is well known to me) is turning my new iphone 4 on remotely and although I turn off my phone every night, I wake up to see it has been turned on by itself, the same hacker was hacking into my old phone. Any suggestions? please

    Hi Friends
I got a problem which I thought somebody online may be able to help me.
I know for fact that someone is turning my iphone on remotely and hacks into it. the same person used to hack into my HTC phone before that is why I switched to iphone4, but I see my phone is being turned on by itself in middle of the night!! Could anybody help me please!! Thanks so much

Doubtful your phone is being hacked (unless this person had possession of the phone in the past and you or he/she jailbroke it) but turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or put it into airplane mode and see if anything changes. I don't blame you for being concerned about your phone coming on by itself but, as the saying goes, when you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras.  It is more likely to be something innocent.
What proof do you have that this person hacked into your old phone?  What proof do you have that this person is hacking into your new phone, other than you've noticed the phone being on?
If you know "for a fact" it is being hacked and by whom, get together your definitive proof of it being hacked and definitive proof of who is doing it and visit your local police department or visit these guys: http://www.cybercrime.gov/index.html.  I believe it is a felony.
You could also take it to an Apple store or give Apple Service a call and see what they think.  Maybe they can give you a few reasons why it is coming on by itself or can help you figure out if something else is going on.

  • Should I be turning off my macbook at night or putting it to sleep?

I just got it and my last HP laptop was horribblee the battery life was so short. I want to keep this running as good as possible and keep the battery life good and not mess up this laptop too. I use it everyday and I keep it plugged in mostly but is it safer to turn it off at night or just put it to sleep?

    Sleep.

Download and save the uninstaller Save it to your downloads folder -  DO NOT run it yet.
Download the Adobe Flash Player installer directly by right clicking one (or both) of the following links and selecting "Save Target as"(IE) or "Save Link as"(other browsers).
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Save the installer(s) to your downloads folder - DO NOT run it(them) yet.
    Reboot your system.
BEFORE you run anything else, locate and run the uninstaller.
When it finishes, run the  installer(s) to put Flash Player on your system again.

Is there any way to turn this off ? Even if I just press the X button to close Firefox then later in the day I open Firefox the previous pages always open & it is annoying. Hello David.
Go into ''Tools > Options > General > Startup:When Firefox starts:'' and configure it as you want (probably to show your home page?). This is the very first option that appears in the options screen, but I understand that it may not be very easy to find. Firefox 4 will not include any redesign to the options screen (except possibly it appearing in a tab, rather than in a popup), but you may interested to know that there are plans to redesign the options screen for versions after Firefox 4, to make it easier to use. If you want to know more about the redesign, just ask.
Anyway, if that doesn't help (it probably does, but just in case), it's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.

  • How to safely turn off the computer while the motion servo is still enabled?

When we use PCI-7344 and set it for serve closed control, I have found a very serious problem
in using the control card in this mode.
As the card is able to control motors only with the computer at power on status, but if we are very
carelessly to shut down the computer and without the notice to turn off motor driver power first
we would always get serious sudden moves of the motors, and might cause damages to the system. The same situation also applies to when control the motors under open/closed loop stepper mode.
How should I do to prevent the above situation?
(note: in my system, we have hook up relays and timers if we could set DIO bits before shut down
    the computer. But
still, there are a certain occassions that the operator would still forget to set the DIO bits
and turn off the computer directly)

The Inhibit output pin of the motion controller (also called drive enable) is the best way to achieve this. It is basically a signal that most power drives take in as an active low input so that when the powergoes out of the computer, the line goes low and immediately kills the axis so that no servo ouptut command affects the motor.
    Best regards,
    Alex Games

  • HT204406 Although I have subscribed to ITunes Match my ipad setting only states under Settings Music, to subscribe to iTunes Match. But i have subscribed. i have played the downloaded songs from the icloud, too, and when i turn off my computer, the ipad m

I subscribed to Music Match with iTunes and yet my ipad settings for Music only still has the option to subscribe, and therefore I cannot click on an option to Activagte iTunes Match, since it is not there. I have all the right number of songs from the icloud showing up in my ipad now, and I have played a few, but when I tried to turn off the computer, it showed a field stating that my ipad music would stop playing too, and it did. I thought this might have something to do with homesharing, but this I thought was something separate from iCloud.
There is something wrong, but I don't understand what. It has just synced, but the problem persists.

Home sharing is separate from iTunes Match.  Sounds like you were playing music using home sharing, which turned off when you turned off your computer.
Open iTunes on your computer and go to the Store menu.  Confirm that there is a setting called Turn Off iTunes Match.  That will confirm that iTunes Match is enabled on your computer.  Then check to see what Apple ID you subscribed to iTunes Match with.  It will be the ID in Store>View Account (in parentheses).
On your iPad, confirm that you are signed in with this same ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store (at the top).  If so, you should see an iTunes Match setting listed with an on/off slider.  Slide it on to enable iTunes Match on your iPad.

Well, if you're running linux you could use Runtime.getRuntime().exec() to execute 'halt -p', if the process was being run as root. Not terribly elegant but I suppose it would work. Although I wouldn't want an unattended process running as root.Yes, this is how you can do it, but on Windows machines as well. I'll go into pseudocode:
App1: Server (running on every lab machine)
open server socket on port X
    wait for connection
verify connection is yourself so that not everyone can shut it down
if not, wait for connection again
if it is, run halt for linux or shutdown for windowsApp2: Client (running on just your computer)
open a socket to each machine running the server app (or you could use multicasting)
validate yourself however you did that
close socketThere are some implications of this though - unless your validation mechanism is decent, pretty much anyone can shut down anything they want. Also, if you don't check for a logged-in user, you may destroy someone's work. Just keep those in mind.
Also, if it is a Windows setting, there are usually better ways to do this - a well-managed windows network has built-in functionality to shut down computers remotely.

  • Is it best to turn off your computer or put it in sleep mode.

Is it best to turn off your computer or put it in sleep mode.
I have a MAC Book Pro
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Well. Apple recommends to put the Mac into sleep mode if you are going to use your Mac after a short period of time, and they only recommend to turn it off when you are not going to use the computer for several days.
In sleep mode, your Mac consumes only a small battery capacity, so it's worth to put it in sleep mode. Also, it's much faster than turning the computer on every time you want to use the Mac

I bought a new iPod but I have a problem when you turn off the computer does not work. Shows that the battery is full and it was lightning. Ipod only works while connected to your computer. What should I do

    Hello pepi95,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you just bought the nano, why not bring it back for a replacement or your money back? It's definitely a defective iPod. Not much else for options here. Sorry.

  • [Kind of solution] Disable to turn off my computer

    Hello!
I am using Archlinux with the Gnome desktop manager.
    I also use an «auto login» when I start ( via bash_profile )
The problem is that I can only log out from Gnome but not halt my system or reboot it.
So, again thanks to my bash_profile, I use «sudo halt» which should ask me for my password and then turn off my computer ( knowing that I belongs to the power group and to sudoers )
Instead of this message I git a «You are not allowed to preserve the environment».
But I type «sudo halt» and then it works… so I don't understand 2 things : why Gnome don't propose me to turn off my machine and why can't I automatise my shutdown ?
    Here is my bash_profile :
    .$HOME/.bashrc
    if [[ -z "$DISPLAY" ]] && [[ $(tty) = /dev/vc/1 ]]; then
    startx
    sudo halt
    fi
    Thanks for helping me
    Ok, I leave Gnome for Xfce… ^_^

  • Impossible to turn off the computer

It is impossible for me to turn off the computer by clicking the normal sequence (apple symbol and turn off the computer). I need to press the on/off button for some seconds to be able to turn it off. I need your help, please.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
