Should I be worried about a scam UK Gov website taking over an open tab on Chrome?

Hey all, just experienced this scam take over a browser window on my Google Chrome.
I can't remember if I closed the window manually or using command + w and I was wondering if it makes a difference.
A little pop-up came up after, and I clicked the "Leave this page" button. Cleared all history on both Chrome and Safari and disabled Java on Safari.
My browser wasn't actually blocked and nothing was in my Downloads folder.
Just making sure that it won't come back to bite me in the butt.
Don't usually follow through so thoroughly, but I have my final graduate school paper due in 48 hours so I'm just making sure my macbook isn't going to spontaneously combust on me!

UPDATE:
(I dont have the snow leopard disks, a certified tech and good friend set me up with some legit bootable USB drives and DVDs of mountain lion)
The CD/DVD install was a no go. After 3 hours I gave up watching the white screen and turned the computer off to continue investigating.
I figured the CD was too old or something, who knows.
I attempted to create my own USB bootable drive by pulling the contents off the CD because I cannot download large files. (It would take a whole day)
It was a sketchy process and I know I couldnt set up the USB into a pristine bootable drive so I kept having to test things, constantly forcing the computer to shut down and turn on to no avail.
At one point I got a fire wire cable and got it to show up on my wifes computer in target disk mode, but when I went to erase the partitioned drive, a error appeared saying it couldn't unmount, and since then, target disk mode will not show up on my wife's computer. I figured that constantly shutting it down caused more problems...
Finally, I found a new 8GB USB stick that a technician from apple helped to create a bootable Mavericks drive  on, and for the first time the computer booted to the installation screen and began installing, However, after 10mins, it stoped and said the hard drive is damaged and needed to be restored.
I am doing one last Option Zero erase on the main drive, then I will partition a proper MacintoshHD in the correct format in hopes that this will clear all the crap that could have accumulated during testing. I will attempt to do a clean install of mavericks.
If I succeed I will run a Disc Verify and Repair, and a Disk Worrier report to make sure.
If this fails, I have a 1.5T External Hard Drive, (Seagate Free Agent GoFlex)
I can unload its data onto my other 2T external hard drive,
Format the Goflex to a suitable mac hard drive then take it apart and put it in my computer.
Since I cannot order a hard drive, does that seem like a good idea? or a really bad idea? lol

We have a MacBook Pro and it is usually quiet, but it sits in a stand to allow air under the bottom.
Just my opinion, but based on experience.
You are still eligible to purchase the longer term AppleCare warranty I think (3 years if my memory is correct). While it is an expense that you may never need, in my opinion, it is cheap insurance based on the cost to repair computers. I buy it and more than once it has paid for itself many times over. Not that Apple products are bad, but electronics do weird things at times.

  • Should I be worried about my iphone's battery life?

I went to sleep when my iphone's battery was on 60% and I woke up with it on 9%. I left the wifi on, but I still think the battery dropped too much in just a few hours without me even using the phone. Is it normal or should I be worried?

There's no way for any of us to be able to tell.  "Normal" battery life is dependent on settings.  Evaluating what is normal requres specific evauation tools.  Those tools will take your settings into account.  If you have some battery sucking settings, the situation you have described would be considered normal.
The blog linked below has some very useful information about maximizing your battery life.

  • Should I be worried about my Nano????

I heard about a persons 1st Gen. iPod nano caught fire in his pocket when he was at work and I was wondering if I should keep using my 1st Gen. nano? Should I worry about this?

While uncommon, this is something that can happen with Lithium Ion batteries. So if you are worried about it, you also need to stop carrying around Cell Phones, PDAs, GPSs, etc. Anything with a Li-Ion battery has the potential to do this and is not restricted to iPods.

  • Should I be worried about my 5 month old battery?

I bought a new battery for my 15" 2007 Macbook Pro in October (2009), and I've been noticing a steep decline in quality lately. In the first three months, I lost 10% of my battery power, and seem to have lost quite a bit more in the past two months. I try to calibrate tri-weekly (once per three weeks).
The problem is, every now and then, the battery jumps up to around 85% randomly for a few days, until it decides to return to 70-75% jumping range.
I guess because I'm not entirely sure about my rights, I'm wondering if it is a faulty manufactured battery or if I am just screwed and will have to buy another battery probably at the end of the year when this one is barely usable.

    KeferSage,
It sounds to me as if the battery is developing a problem in one its cells, which is operating intermittently rather than consistently. I would take it in and get it stress tested at an Apple AASP or Store. This should reveal the problem. As it is less than twelve months old, assuming you bought it through Apple, it should be covered under warranty under the 300 cycle / 80% of maximum capacity rating anyway, but if it fails the stress test at this age they will almost certainly not even be concerned about such things unless it had completed more than 300 cycles.

  • At what temperature should I start worrying about my MBP overheating?  Anytime I do video or most java stuff, it cranks up to about 180

    15" 2007 MBP
I know these tend to run hot, but when it burns on the touch, I'm concerned something is overheating. Other than a dead battery (that I'm replacing), EVERYTHING else about the machine runs great.  Should I be concerned, or just pay extra attention to providing free flow of air around the underside of machine and the fan output?
    Thanks!
    -Shane

You're my personal genius bar! Yes, the CPU is running hot.  I have the iStat Nano widget and it lists CPU, GPU Diode, GPU Heatsink, Heatsink 1, and Heatskink 2 all listed separately but within about 10ºF of one another. Average temp hovers around 115ºF, but 180ºF is about as hot as it gets.  Seems outrageous to me, but I'll take your word if that is perfectly normal for some processes.
    Thanks for your help tonight!

  • Hi, after about half an hour I can't select any open tabs or see new tabs. When I reboot and restore previous session the new tabs appear.

Existing tabs can't be activated. I have no problem with restoring a previous session or opening previous tabs, but although new tabs are created - because I see them when I restart Firefox - they are invisible until I restart. Also, some, but not all of the menu options are not accessible until I restart.
    Any advice would be appreciated,
    Cheers,
    Ian

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to check if other software is causing this.

  • Should I worry about a swollen battery?

This MacBook has some age on it. Besides the fact that it is the black macbook and the finish is terrible the laptop is awesome. The one thing I have noticed however, is that the battery has started to swell, such that the laptop no longer sits properly on the desk. It also gets extemely hot. I know it is out to old for coverage, I am just wondering where I can find an affordable battery. The Apple store told me $250 which I think is crazy. Is that so I buy A new macbook pro?
I don't have $1200 to spend. UGGH  It seems to hold a charge, just wondering if I should just not worry about it? Put a fan under it for the heat??
    Thoughts folks?

    Not happy with Apple battieries
Any opinions on the most reliable 3rd party battieries? I'm not having the best luck with "official" apple batteries. For the added price of Apple hardware I would hope they'd be more discerning about the 3rd-party sources for components in their computers.
My battery is now swollen, and isn't charging. I'm also having issues with the trackpad button clicking everything un-intentionally. Now I can't use my machine without external power and the trackpad disabled. I think the warped battery also put too much pressure on other components in the machine (just a guess)
*edit* after removing the battery the trackpad functions normally. the excess pressure from the battery was causing the issue.
I made the mistake of leaving my MacBook Pro in my car with the near-freezing temperatures of my garage. Knowing my battery would probably be drained I left it plugged in and checked on it the next day.
I'm not sure if it was swollen before charging, or if I needed to let my machine warm to room temperature before charging.  Anyway, let my mistake be a lesson to everyone... don't leave your machines anywhere that is too hot or cold, 'cuz chances are it will cause problems. I almost always use a USB-powered laptop mat w/ fan to prevent heat problems, but freezing seems to be just as bad if not worse.
In the past my Macbook Pro batteries have failed repeatedly, and if not for my apple care plan it would have cost plenty to replace those batteries.
Of course the apple genius answer is that I leave my laptop plugged in too long, thus damaging the battery. They recommend I regularly let the battery drain to 5 or 10% followed by fully recharging. Good advice I suppose, and I haven't had issues with this last battery for a few years. On the other hand, I have a very old powerbook G4 that I leave plugged in non-stop for many months at a time and that battery has been working well since 2004 (about 9 years now). So what changed with the newer macbook batteries?

  • Worried about online gaming and security!

Currently playing Quake 4 on my iMac. All of a sudden my cd-key doesn't work with a message "your cd-key is in use", waited a few minutes, restarted and it worked fine.
I'm worried that someone got access to it. Should I be worried about other files, systems, etc... on my iMac. Anyone know of any concerns?
Sorry, don't know if this the right place.

Highly, highly unlikely your system was compromised. Gaining remote entry to your filesystem would've required some kind of trojan backdoor or exploit. And considering that there are very few in existence for the mac, and practically none in the wild, the chance that there would be one stealing Quake 4 keys is about zero.
That message could've been the result of a network error, or a previous login session of yours that hadn't been terminated on their end yet. Also, pirated copies of games often use randomly generated keys, so it is possible that a copy of yours came up. Either way, if it doesn't keep happening, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Mystery Files Being Transferred to me via Bluetooth--should i be worried?

Ok stupid mistake--had not realized Bluetooth was on. Today, randomly, someone kept trying to transfer a file to me. I declined each time and quickly turned Bluetooth off. I never use Bluetooth and have no idea why it was even turned on, but should I be worried about anything else that someone had access to? Any files, etc? Pardon novice questions but I want to make sure things are A-OK.
    Thanks all.

    Hello a:
The effective distance for Bluetooth transmissions is about 10 meters (30 feet). Wherever that was coming from, it had to be within that range (reduced for walls, etc). Perhaps from an apartment or even another room.
I would not worry about anyone accessing your system. If you have file sharing on and you allowed anyone to look at anything, there would be a possibility of something being read.
Incidentally, if it is not on, turn on your OS X built-in firewall.
Pardon novice questions but I want to make sure things are A-OK.
Ask away, people here enjoy helping others.

these messages are harmless and should be ignored. the ARD message one indicates that you might not be running the latest version of leopard. is that right? your profile does indicate 10.5.5 which is the latest.

If you changed your Apple ID, you will not  be able to update any of the content that you used in the past. The worse case scenario here would have been to change the password. Really all you needed to do was go on the Apple site and change the password, unless you provided them with information. This will make it difficult for you to deal with turning off Find My iPhone and other Apple ID related steps. All you really needed to do was delete the email.

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
