Should I bother updating firmware?

Hi, I just picked up a G5 Dual 1.8 PPC, Boot ROM is 5.1.5f0. I noticed that there is a new update 5.1.5.f8. Although it say it's only for uniprocessors, I've read that others who have dual processors, have been able to update. Should I bother updating? Do I really need to? I haven't notice any issues with the G5 so far. But then again, I don't really know what I should be looking for, if anything. The only thing I've noticed is that on start-up I hear the fan do a quick little rev, then the system is quiet. I only made note of that because the G5 I have at work doesn't make a sound, even on startup. But then again, it's a newer dual 2.7.
I've also read that you don't have to remove 3rd party ram prior to updating. Is this true?

I apologize. I did not mean to dis you or your knowledge.
I take it this way, when a vendor offers a firmware revision, it simply makes sense to install it. There are always improvements. I have never had the whine issue and for the most part I'm very happy with my MBP. The call I made to Tech Support was due to the lack of "insistance" on Apple's part on whether or not someone should install this. Also, because the rumor mill was suggesting you NOT install it unless you were doing Boot Camp, which I just did not believe to be the case (again, because a next revision will also include this code). Now, with Apple not saying anything "official" about some of the whine issues et al, it only makes sense to me (and my engineers here) that they would put out incremental updates, because they have had some success in fixing things in the lab, so to speak, and want to see the general users reaction ("Hey, my sound works now!" - that kind of thing.) I have no doubt that Apple has many people scanning these forums all day, simply because they have to. This is a good way to find things. That certainly will not get an official reaction though, and those waiting for that, will just have to wait. Until the whine, for example, is universal (and I don't mean software wise!) - there will be no statement. So, the best "statement" that Apple is making, is by releasing updates.

Should I bother updating to Sol 10 u6?

Hi all,
A question I have never really gotten a straight answer to, from anyone (not Sun, not community locals, nor documentation).
Should I actually go to the trouble of UPDATING my Solaris 10 u3 hosts to u6 via taking the hosts down, then booting from the u6 media, then (if it works!) selecting the upgrade install?
The reason I ask is because, as I've noticed in my patching schedules, all the updates (including kernel/zfs genesis style stuff) all seem to come through anyway. Is there really any point to actually trying to UPDATE the host to u6 when the patches seem to keep it in line anyway? (I use PCA, patch check advance, if anyone is interested).
I know the question seems obvious/simple enough, but again, nobody has ever been able to give me a straight reasoning or a definite +"yes you must"+ or +"no, don't bother"+ style answer, let alone some reasons for/against.
Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you are correct that if you apply all the patches your system will be patched and up to date. What you won't have though is ( from what I understand by reading patch cluster documentation) is that you won't have the latest features. These are only available if you are on a given release base, and are not added in, even if you if you apply a full patch cluster. I.e. in u6 Sun added a bunch of ZFS stuff, but also added SSE3+ instruction support for x86 processors, and SHA256/SHA512 crypto capabilities to everyone. In u5 they added additional power management support, xVNC and Trusted Extensions.

We just moved our 10 machines or so up to u6, and although we have had some problems on the x86 side, for the most part everything has gone well. Of course with all new releases, there are issues, but that's why we back everything up first! =D

Hold the Power Button (3 secs)
Continue holding the power button and also hold the home button (15 secs)

Yes, y should install upgrades.
WHY:
1. The newer upgrades fixes some minor bugs.
2. Fixes some MAJOR BUGS of which users are well-concerned and complained.
3. Improves picture compression.
4. Makes the phone running faster.
5. Makes RAM uses effitiently.
6. Fixes crashes.
7. For N73, it gives stability [not quite still] to gallery.
So, that is why y should install upgrades for yr N73.

Mac shuts down? Already updated firmware.

My MacBook has been fine since I bought it in May 2007. However, today I had left my MacBook on and plugged in, while a read a book. I turned to my MacBook, and Firefox had shut down. I wasn't sure why, but I just opened it back up. I left my MacBook again, positive I left it on, and when I came back, it (my Mac) was off. This happened twice today. Maybe it's Firefox, it was open both times my computer shut down, but I haven't updated it, or my Mac today or yesterday.
I'll update this post as needed.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I never saw my Mac shut down. I am almost positive I left it on though.

Is it plugged in when you do this or running on battery? What firmware update are you talking about?
Check and see if you have battery update 1.3 installed. You should find it at the location listed. Right click on the bundle and check *Get Info* a window will open and you can check the version there.

Leopard(10.5.1) and Tiger(10.4.11) installs it. It is the MacBook Pro update.
If it is 1.3 drag it to the trash and then reboot. After you reboot you will be able to empty the trash. Once you have done that run software update and it should install Battery Update 1.2. You should reset the SMC (System Management Controller) after doing this.

Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

Since the IEEE has approved the 802.11N standard, we should expect updated firmware supporting the approved standard.

I made the assumption that all of the Draft N routers would get a firmware update once the 802.11n specification was approved. It sounds like I may have been too optimistic.
I can't really complain too much. The WRT600N router has been working perfectly since I installed it two years ago. I have been able to connect with devices running 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n (draft) with no problems. I also get excellent signal stength through both floors of a fairly large house.

OK, so the firmware is the same as mine, and yet Apple Support offered this EFI and SMC update packages, which should give a message that our computers are updated.
However, the update packages fail to run.
Did Apple neglect to give the correct update for the mid-2012 issue of MacBook Pro 13-inch? I have the i7 Intel processor, instead of the i5, and I was sold this unit as having two processors, but the System info only lists a single processor.
Is one of the problems with Intel-based MacBook Pro units that the integration wasn't without bugs that cause processor hang when running the OS Lion, even with updates to 10.7.5?
Shouldn't the EFI and SMC updaters run on these machines as stated in the Apple Support article?
What will Apple do for these customers?

Stuck with gray screen during update (firmware)

Today I completed the routine software update (firmware) on my macbook pro. During the update all I can see is a gray screen with no progress bar. It appears "stuck". Please advise!

I have Lion on my 13" pro and have kept it up to date. Today I had a message about the need to update firmware. I pressed restart and there was language about the screen ging gray. I think it said for a few minutes. It has been 3 hrs. is this a problem?.

I got an alert to update firmware. When I click for restart a message the screen would gray and and it might ake a few minutes. That was about three hours ago and it is still gray and sitting there. With Firmware updates, Apple will usually offer instructions to complete the update, since they require an additional step to complete. It sounds like you haven't finished the Firmware update completely.
Since it's your computer and investment, I wouldn't risk it and would visit your local Apple Store and let them solve the problem. In the meantime, read this link from Apple:

Downgrade firmware to 7.6.1 .. as the latest is just lousy.
It is easy to downgrade.. hold down the option key whilst you click the version number. in Macs.. lots of stuff is hidden behind an option key.
I also strongly recommend a factory reset and use all SMB names.. not apple type names..
ie TC name.. TCgen4
Wireless name TCwifi (or give names to both bands.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz).
That helps all the non-apple part of the world.. connect.
Also Mavericks has now changed over to SMB as well. So even Mac is now windows networking.
Generally these two things. .7.6.1 firmware and SMB names will fix it.. if not post again as is another step that is possible.. controlling the WAN speed of the TC.

we have request_date and schdule_ship_date and they are some default rules are defined
as sysdate for both the dates and thses should be effected once you save the form.
our requirement is schdule_ship_date should not be updatable when we change a request_date
for the already existing sales order(SO).
This can be achieved through form personalization.

we have request_date and schdule_ship_date and they are some default rules are defined
as sysdate for both the dates and thses should be effected once you save the form.

Help! Accidently updated firmware of Laserjet pro 400 with Laserjet CP4525 firmware

Help! Accidently updated firmware of Laserjet pro 400 with Laserjet CP4525 firmware. The printer is now just spewing out pages and never reaches a ready state to put the correct firmware on. I really hope I haven't bricked it just by a silly click.
Can anyone help or suggest a way to put the correct firmware on?

The product might be receiving the earlier sent firmware update as a job in the print que. Delete pending jobs from print queue & connect network cable to printer. The device should perform normal boot till READY state.

I'm N85 user and I want to know What is defference between updating Firmware via PC an Via Device manager on phone?

Firmware updates are usually released via one method or the other, rarely via both.
The NSU method downloads entire ROM images from Nokia's servers, resulting in downloads of more than 100MB in some cases.
The FOTA method only downloads what has changed from the version running on your phone to the latest version available. This means much less data to download, usually around 4-6 megabytes, which is important if you don't have access to a wireless network and have to use your operator's packet data service.
The FOTA method is safer (because it doesn't involve a computer running a notoriously flaky operating system) and faster (because there's less data to download).
Otherwise, the end result is the same.
