Should I buy a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air

I am currently going into high school and have saved enough money to buy a macbook. However, I am debating to if i should buy a MacBook Pro or a Macbook Air. I would use the laptop for these things
1. Basic Microsoft programs(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. for school)
2. I will also be Parallels on my mac
3. Light amount of gaming (League of Legends)
4. Websurfing/Research ( usually with an abundance of pages open)
5. Studying ( as any student would do)
6. Video Watching
7. Music
I am willing to upgrade the internals of the macbook but have a budget of about 1,250 dollars. Advice about which laptop to pick as well as what upgrades may need to be made for the internals will extremely help. Thank you

You might be able to shave $50 or so via education pricing at online Apple Store
Parallels has education pricing, ditto MS Office. Your school (district) might have some education prices for software.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

A basic MBA will be more than adequate.  Take into consideration that storage may be a long term issue unless you are not averse to traveling with an external HDD.

Light weight basic needs, power miser - MacBook Air (glossy screens)
Semi-light weight basic needs, more storage, DVD drive, hot machine (no 3D gaming) - 13" MacBook Pro (glossy screens)
Bit heavier, pro needs, 3D gaming, cool machine, power hungry, - 15" MacBook Pro  (anti-glare screen option, recommended)
Same as above, larger screen for HD video, cool machine,  power hungry, 17" MacBook Pro (anti-glare screen option, recommended)

MacBook Air: thin, light, fast SSD storage. Cons: not upgradable, expensive.
MacBook Pro: cheaper, upgradable, better graphics card, more storage and RAM for the buck.  Cons: not as light
you'll get more for the money with the MacBook Pro. the Air is better as a second computer for people.

I noticed that if I open Final Cut Projects created on other/older models MacBook Pro Laptops or MacPro Desktops, the fonts used in the previously created FCP projects, change their font spacing! which distorts the look of the Text that was written, by oevrlapping on other things that were put & present on the screen.. Another similar probelm is that the Vector shaped used for example to highlight certain words or shapes, also change their position on the screen so that they no longer highlight exact things that we once used these vectors to highlight or outline... Anyone knows how to solve this problem please?? I made sure that the same fonts are available in the Library in both old and newer computers...
    thanks in advance..

You might want to take your question to the FCP forum - if you copied all fonts to your Library>Fonts folder and restarted they should be recognized by all applications. I know that this works for Adobe products, anyway.

You are certainly welcome to your opinion. I'll stick to my reply.
In view of the fact that there are numerous applications that run properly while creating a lot of internal heat in a MBP indicates that it does not follow that heat is an inhibiting factor (within designed parameters).  Thus my comment is certainly not opion, rather fact.  You certainly are entitled to your reply but a third party reader should be be apprised of what the facts are.

  • MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air - which is better for a high school student? Tips/suggestions?? Thanks

I can't decide if I want to purchase the MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air for my high schooler. It has to have multiple life purposes such as social networking, webcam, word processing etc.  I am probably buying a refurbished laptop from this website. Any other tips are appreciated!

Remember: the MacBook Air does not have an optical drive, so you can't use CD's or DVD's. However, if you do not plan on using the computer for gaming, video editing, or large-file storing go with the Air, as it is much less expensive, but just as fast and responsive as the MacBook Pro. Not to mention that it's $200 cheaper.

  • Hi i have a macbook and I want to see if I can trade it in for a MacBook pro or a MacBook air

hi i have a macbook and i want to see if i can trade it in for a macbook pro or a macbook mini

Apple does not have any trade in program for computers.  You can sell yours privately and buy what you wish.  Or you can try one of the recycle or online buy-back services (e.g. www.gazelle.com, amazon recycle, bestbuy recycle, etc).

  • Macbook Pro 2012 or Macbook Air 2013

    Hello,
I looking to buy a Apple Laptop but really confused to which one to get Macbook Pro 2012 or Macbook Air 2012. Here are is what I do:
Web Development (PHP, Python Django, Node.js, Tornado)
Photoshop (4 times in 10 uses)
Illustrator (1 time in 10 uses)
    Web surfing
Need a good backup time (min of 3hrs)
    Want a good performance
Will have it for 4 years

Photoshop (4 times in 10 uses)
Illustrator (1 time in 10 uses)
When you use these, you'll be thankful you got a Pro.
    Web development
    Web surfing
Both are about equal.  Some game performance may be better on a Pro, especially if it uses the graphics chip.
Need a good backup time (min of 3hrs)
Don't you mean max?  A lot is dependent on how much data you have to backup and whether you choose to clone or use Time Machine.  Clones are faster the second go around.  Time Machine can be fast, but if you use it for archival, you'll be spending time turning off Time Machine, and archiving necessary to keep archives off the Time Machine drive.  And Time Machine needs at least twice the capacity of your original, where clones only need the original.
    Want a good performance
Pro is invariably better performance than Air.
Will have it for 4 years
Both only get a warranty up to three years if purchased within the first year from date of computer purchase.
http://www.safeware.com/ offers insurance, but not warranty.
Some credit card companies extend manufacturer warranty.  Check if yours does.

Used the right memory according to page, both for my iMac and MacBook Pro, iMac worked, MacBook Pro didn't start (warning tone).
    Any idea?

I suggest you buy your memory from OWC or DataMem. Both guarantee the memory works or will replace it if it does not, no questions asked, within their 30 day return period. I've used both for over 20 years, and no complaints.

  • How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

MacBook Pro - no problem, it is an extremely popular computer for running that software. Just look at the Adobe demo videos of their products, most of the time you can see a MacBook Pro running the software in their video.
MacBook Air - should be just as good most of the time.
However, if you get involved in heavy Photoshop work like highly stacked layers/masks/channels, 16 bits per channel or up, or merging HDR or panoramas, the MacBook Pro may be better because it can take 16GB RAM while the MacBook Air can take only 8GB RAM.
Also, if you are going to do serious programming in XCode or Dreamweaver, you may find the MacBook Air screen to be too small for all of the code windows and tool palettes that you may want to open and arrange in those programs. The 15" Retina screen of the MacBook Pro will let you spread out your work and do less window switching. The 11/"13" MacBook Air screens are both smaller and non-Retina so not as sharp.
Even Photoshop is nicer on the 15" MacBook Pro because of the extra screen space for the image with less intrusion by the tool palettes.
In short, if you are a casual user the MacBook Air will be great. If you are a professional with a heavy workload the MacBook Pro may be more efficient overall due to the larger screen and higher RAM capacity.

  • Difference in quality of iSight on Macbook Pro C2D and Macbook Pro Intel

    Hi there
I currently have a MacBook Pro Intel 2.16mhz 17" laptop and I just bought a new MacBook Pro 2.33 C2D laptop. I have noticed that the picture quality of the built in iSight camera of the standard Dual Core is much better than on my new C2D version. The new C2D version seems to have more 'noise' over the whole picture than my standard Dual Core. Does anyone know why this should be?
    Many thanks in advance

I have just bought my C2D 15,4" 2,16Ghz model and iSight has a very good quality. Compared to the CD model I don't see any difference

  • Can I put RAM from my MacBook Pro into my MacBook?

    Hi,
I just bought a 2.5GHz MBP, and I will be ordering 4GB of RAM from Crucial. We also have a 1.83GHz MacBook, which has only 512 MB of RAM installed at the moment...
Can I use the RAM that will be left over from the MacBook Pro in my MacBook, so that it will have 2GB (its maximum)?
    Thank you!
    Alexandra

Yes that should work fine. They use the same modules.
