Should I buy a new MBPr 15 or stay on iMac 2011?

The thing  is, that I am not really sure, should I buy this machine or not, because actually I am a film-maker and currently I have an iMac (2011), and looks like I will work in the field in the future. So I am considering of buying a base MacBook Pro Retina 15, which is with i7 2.7GHz, 16GB of memory, 512 flash storage + Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5.
And here is my iMac tech specs: i7 3.4GHz, 8GB of memory, 1TB 7200rpm hard drive + AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1024Mb.
Also, I am going do a lot of pretty heavy video-editing (Premiere, After Effects) on the notebook, because I am going to sell my iMac. Well, if buying the Macbook makes sense.
So the question is, will it make a big difference in speed of rendrering, overall quality of work progress, and editing itself. Also, I am interested in Photoshop, if you, guys, worked in photoshop (photographers or web-designers) on this machine please leave a reply about how it goes there, I mean, is there any lags or retina-display problems, because I am also planning to work in all of Adobe Software.
Also, sorry for my english, this is not my native language, and sorry if this topic is not in the right place. Peace!

You will find that the relative performance of the two units will be very similar.  see the attached bench test scores:
http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
Note that with the retina, your storage will be significantly less. Whether the resolution of the retina is worth the premium you have to decide.
Though I an not an Adobe user, I would think that the retina with SSD as well as 16 GB RAM should handle those applications without any difficulty.
Ciao.

  • Should I buy a new Mac Pro or an iMac?

    Hi,
I co-run a video production company in the UK. We have an old 2009 iMac, a MacBook Pro from 2010/11 ish, and a PC all used for video editing, and some other intensive apps like Photoshop and Adobe After Effects.
We're about to spend some money on either a fully specced 2013 iMac or a new Mac Pro. The mac Pro we'd be able to afford would be £1500 more than the iMac (which includes purchasing an external display, mouse and keyboard - all of which an iMac obviously already includes so the price comparison is valid).
The Mac Pro would be a 3.7 quad-core processor, 256ssd, 12gig ram - which I would then upgrade to 64gig (somewhere else for financial reasons) and finally Dual AMD GPUs with 3gig of ram each. That's all we can afford unfortunately!
The iMac would be a 3.5 quad core, 1TB fusion drive, and 8gig of ram that I would then max out externally to 32gig, and finally NVidia Geforce 4gig GPU.
Either one we buy we'd get Applecare.
Any suggestions as to which would be better to purchase? Our difficulty comes with the fact that we don't have an awful lot of cash to spare, and we also have other things we'd like to invest in (building improvements etc). The guys who work at the company are naturally leaning towards the Mac Pro, as was I intially, but my job is also to spend our money as wisely as possible, so I'd like some advice on whether the Mac Pro is worth spending that extra £1500 on.
Obviously I understand the Mac Pro will be faster generally speaking, but will it really make a big difference when using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects and Photoshop? Or is a fully specced iMac going to be just as good?
Also what other advantages, other than just speed, would a Mac Pro bring?
    Cheers in advance,
    Phil

One question to ask yourself is how long you need this machine to do these tasks and what future programs/tasks will you need?
While both machines can handle everything you mentioned now, the MAc Pro will be faster now, and easier to expand in the future.  The iMac will simply not be as cost effective long term.  If however your needs wont change or you don't plan to use the machine more than 3-4 years, the iMac is going to get the job done and of course be much cheaper.

  • If i have a macbook pro from 2008 should i buy a new apple laptop?

I need help should i buy a new laptop or should i just stick with my apple macbook from 2008?

if you're happy with your Mac, and it's running like it should, keep using it.
On the other hand, the new Mac OS X Mavericks is due out sometime this fall. If you're thinking of a new Mac you may want to wait until you can purchase one with Mavericks pre installed.

Should I buy the new MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro?

it really depends what you are going to be doing, if you are going to be video editing and doing intensive stuff the Macbook Pro.
if you are going to be just browsing the web and doing lite video editing and not that intensive stuff than you should go with the Macbook Air.
Also if you want a cheaper computer than you should get the Macbook Air.  By cheap, I mean less expensive.

  • When should I buy a new battery?

I've had my macbook for 8 months, I'm just wondering when should I buy a new battery?
The cycle count is 310, and checking System Profiler, the battery full charge is 5143.
Should I buy a new battery in a now, or should I not worry about buying a new battery, because I heard 310 cycles was a lot.

The question really isn't how many cycles your battery has, it is how long your full charge is lasting on a calibrated battery. If you've calibrated your battery within the last 60 days and you are getting less than 2 to 2 1/2 hours on a full charge then it is time to get a new battery. If you are getting 3 to 3 1/2 hours you are fine, regardless of your cycles. If you are in between decide if the $125 or so is well spent to get 4 hours or so.

It is really up to you. Since y say yo have iOS 6 yo must have a 4G iPod which is not bad.

  • Should I buy the new ipad air?

I have an ipad 4 without the cellular capability and have always wanted one with that capability.  I've been waiting for the new ipad and now that it's out I'm asking the experts here - should I buy the new one or get an ipad4 with cellular?

My first iPad (first gen) was a 16. I managed well with it. Then upgraded to a 3rd gen with 32 GB. What I found was that if the space was there, I used it, even though I thought 16 was plenty. And suspect if I had gone to a 64 or a 128, would have found the same thing. If you think there is a chance that 128 would work better for you, that's what I would go with. Better to have it and not really need it, than not to have and wish you did.

  • Should I buy a new Macbook pro?

So, I've had a 15" macbook pro, (mid 2010) and it has served me well... The hard drive failed, which i got repaired, then the battery has just done that thing where it swells up like a beach ball...
    Here's my dilemma:
I don't know if i can  be bothered to spend the money to replace the battery, or if its worth me just buying a new one...
i know someone will say "waste of time, just get it repaired" but frankly this laptop can't really run ANYTHING decently any more...
So here's the big question: Should i just go ahead and buy the current Top Spec 15 inch macbook pro, or do i wait for the new models that come out later this year?
Will i even notice a difference?
I mainly use the computer for general browsing, video editing, audio editing and a lot of gaming... with that in mind, does anyone have any suggestions?
is it even worth waiting?? will there really be an enormous jump in performance in the new models that i simply cant live without?
Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Should I buy a new Macbook Pro 13 inch or Macbook Air 13 inch?

    Hi,
I was wondering if I should buy the new Macbook pro 13 inch, or keep my old 2010 1.4 C2D Macbook Air. I am not satisfied with the tiny 64GB SSD that my current Macbook Air has, because just a few weeks after I had done a clean reinstall of OSX Lion, the whole disk almost filled up. The one thing I do like about the Macbook Air, however is the speed of the SSD. Its really quick, and it boots in under 20 seconds. The Air didn't have many performance issues (other than overheating like crazy after playing a few graphics-intensive games).
If I were to buy a new Mac, my price range would be from $1200-$1500. I plan to use Garageband/iMovie frequently for making Youtube videos/school projects, and store a large music library. I also plan to do some moderate gaming and run Windows 7 in Bootcamp/Parallels. I don't plan to take it around much, but I don't want to have to weigh down my backpack in case I have to. My two options now would be the new Macbook Pro 13 inch or the new Macbook Air 13 inch. Could anyone give me a suggestion of which computer to buy?
    Thanks!

I went through this same thing when I purchased my first Mac 3 days ago, also between the 13 inch MBA and MBP. I ended up deicding with the 13inch MBP, here's why:
    1. More hard drive space, yes it may not be an SSD but more space is more space. I have also heard about people taking out the disc drive and adding an SSD in its place, so there would be an option.
    2. The disc drive, I rarely do use it but just in case it's there and easier than carrying around an external.
    3. Upgradability, I plan on keeping this Mac for a while because I spent so much on it. On a MBP I can upgrade the internal parts such as the hard drive and RAM. On a MBA everything is soldered together so what you buy is what you stick with.
    4. Ethernet port, this is one that could be gotten around by an adapter but I still took it into consideration. Not everywhere has wifi yet including my work where every computer is hard wired.
    5. Bootcamp, as well I plan to run Windows 7 on mine and Windows 7 takes a good amount of space so this is another spot where the larger hard drive of the MBP comes in handy. You could always have an external hard drive and run Windows 7 off of that on an Air but then you would have to have it always plugged in when you wanted to run Windows 7.
About me, I am a student so I had a lot to think about and read a lot of reviews online before I decided on my MBP but I am glad I decided on this over an Air. It may be a few pounds heavier also but in the long run for me I think the Pro will be better, I do plan on adding more RAM in the future as software becomes more memory intensive. With you're pricerange being 1200-1500 the 13inch MBP with the i7 processor  may be one to look at. From Apple with their student discount, if you are one, you get $100 of plus a $100 giftcard. At BestBuy (where I got mine) the price of the i7 13inch MBP is 1,424.99 and if you're a student you get $100 off but no giftcard. I got the i5 13inch MBP because I don't need an i7.
In the end it all comes down to what works for you, but I hope I was able to help you some.

  • I am moving to Europe - can I bring my Verizon iphone 5 or should I buy a new one there?

    Hello,
I am moving to Europe, specificaly France, soon and would like to know if I should bring my Verizon iphone 5, or just buy a new one there, since I will have to start a new contract with a European phone company while I am there. I haven't bought my new iphone 5 yet (because I am waiting for this answer) but my mother is alligble for an upgrade with her Verizon account and can get a brand new Verizon iphone 5 for a great deal. She was going to give it to me, but I am leaving for France in 3 months where I will be living there for at least a year. I was going to just purchase a new iphone 5 with one of the European phone companies (like Orange or Vodaphone, ect.) since I will be getting a good deal on them too (when signing up for a new contract), but if the Verizon iphone will work exactly the same over in Europe, I would rather get it now. Either way, I will be spending about the same amount of money. Will I be restricted somehow using a US iphone 5 in Europe, or are the US iphone 5's any different from the iphone 5's in Europe (or tide to European phone companies? Do they offer an insurance plan? (I'm not sure if this even exists in the US. I will be a new iphone user!) I'm just curious what which iphone will be more efficitant to use, since I will be spending most of my time in Europe.
    I appreciate you answer!!

Click on the links on the right for some good information. The only concern is that a phone purchased in the States will only be seviced for any repairs in the States. You will not have any warranty coverage in France.

  • I need a new inverter cable for my MacBook (5.5 years old).  Can I get it replaced cheaply, or should I buy a new laptop?

Hi!  I have a 5.5-year-old Macbook4.1, and I've been having problems with the display.  I googled the problem and found out that I've got a wonky inverter cable.  Apparently, the part itself is relatively cheap, but the labor (which involves taking nearly the whole laptop apart) means that the repair is expensive.  The quote I got (in Germany, where I live) is 200 euros.
My laptop has been functioning just fine besides the display problem, but since it's already so old, it seems to make sense to buy a new laptop rather than repairing this one.  However, someone told me that I should contact Apple first and see if they might cut me a deal on the repair, since I'm an existing customer and they'd want to keep me happy. I tried doing this through the Apple Support site, but I'd have to pay $50 to do that, which seems to defeat the purpose.  Going to an Apple store is also prohibitively expensive, since there aren't any very close to me.
So my question is this.  Does anyone see any reason why I shouldn't buy a new laptop?  The one I would probably end up buying is about $550 (not a Mac), so it's more money than I'd pay for the repair, but...you know.  Sunk costs, and all that.  I'd be appreciative of any opinions!
Sidenote: in case anyone doubts my diagnosis, here's a description of the problem.  When my screen is open, I can see a very faint picture on the display, but the screen is pretty much dark.  When I slowly tilt the screen as if to close it, the picture suddenly comes back.  So when the laptop is open at any angle more than about 45 degrees, the display is dark.

    go on give it a go! what have you got to lose;

  • When should I buy a new MBP?

I'm leaving for college in the fall and I would like some help deciding when it makes sense to buy a new computer.  I'm planning on buying a new MBP with Retina display, but I'm not sure if it's totally worth updating yet.  I currently have a Late (October) 2009 White Macbook (2.26Ghz, 8GB RAM, 250GB HD), that works decently, but isn't wonderful--it's slowing down.  I would appreciate some ideas and thoughts on when it makes sense to upgrade:  now, before I leave for college; sometime during the fall semester, after I really know my computing needs (my least preferred option); or, this Christmastime?  If anyone has some advice, it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers!

    ccshaw wrote:
Wouldn't it just make sense to put the money for the 7200rpm drive towards one more upgrade on the MBP?  I could just cut that up front cost.
You can choose to forgo the hard drive upgrade, however 250GB is quite small, meaning your likely using a great portion of the second 50% of the drive, which the read/wrire performance is substancially reduced.
7,200 RPM doesn't make that much of a battery life dent that one will notice it, but one will notice the speedier response.
S0 by incrreasing the RPM's and the storage size, plus newer drive with better read/write speeds through technology improvments combined with a zero erase + fresh install of 10.6.1 (your original disks) and Software Updated to 10.6.8 (10.7 is slow) should make a dramatic improvement on that model.
However a erase + fresh install of 10.6 on that present 250GB can do the job well too, 10.7 is slow and you likely have other problems the 10.6 install will also cure.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard
I'm not sure where I can get a copy of 10.6.8.  Do you know where I could obtain that?
Your computer came with 10.6.1 install disks, hold c or option key down and boot off the disks, use Disk Utility to erase the entire drive (select the drive makers name and size on the left) with Security Option > Zero all data, wait, then when finished quit and install 10.6.1 and Software Update fully to 10.6.8.
If you no longer have the 10.6.1 disks, call Apple for a machine specific replacement disks for your 2009 Late 13" White MacBook.
You can also use the $29 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disks sold here
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
f it turns out that I do need Windows for class applications, do I install it on a partition by using disk utility and partitioning my HD (also, how big does that partition for windows need to be)?
There are two methods to use Windows on a Mac.
1: Apple's Bootcamp, which takes the bottom free space on your boot drive (250GB isn't much if you have a lot of OSX data) and allows you to direct install Windows 7 (only) there.
2: Virtual machine software, which allows one to run Windows (any flavor and Linux's) in a window in OS X.
You can read about both (pro's and cons) here:

    Hello everybody,
Sorry about my English firstly. I got a warning about charger. Not supporting or something like that. I tried to turn the usb port. Last night, it worked, but now it doesnt work anymore. Should i go to the MediaMarkt with my guarantee file or buy a new one? What should i do?

You do not need to buy the iPhone charger , it is covered by the same warranty as the iPhone
You should go to Apple and it should be replaced under warranty assuming it came from your country originally

Save your money and by an Athlon 64. You'd be pissing away your money. You won't get much more  that is unless I am reading your first post incorrectly.
What are you saying here? You ONLY have 128MB RAM or what?
More RAM will give you a boost, spend that money on some good RAM that will go in your next system. For instance some good Mushkin http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146355
Otherwise save your money I personally think it would be a waste ATM.
