Should I buy an iMac?

I own a MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012, and I'm studying to become a Meda Designer (websites, commercials). I was wondering, is it worth the money to buy an iMac as an extra computer at home? Or should I keep the money nicely in my pocket?

I just bought the 27" iMac and love it. It is my first MAC.  There is some discussion about image retention. I have a bit of it if I have app windows up for long. But it goes away.  I can see it on the dark grey background only such as in Lightroom. But once I load a photo, the IR disappears as a new background comes up.  Not sure if this will get worse or not. I use 10 minute sleep mode to try and avoid it if not working on the iMac.
You will love it though. I love the real estate on the screen.

Should I buy the imac with expandable 8gb memory slot for future os upgrade size?

I Always try to have a little more RAM on my computers that I think I'll need when I purchase them. Either have more ram installed when you order the iMac or purchase one with open slots for upgrading.
I Purchase my iMac 5K with only 8 GB RAM but it had two open slots. As soon as I received the iMac I purchased two 8 GB modules form Other World Computeing. That brought my RAM to 24 GB. I run multiple applications and the iMac runs smoothly.

  • When should i buy a iMac?

I have been wating for a while to buy a iMac. Some sources say it will come out sept. 12, others say october, or even early 2013. i really need one now but should i buy now though? i mean what happens when i buy one now but then the new one comes out in october?

Don't buy anything from Best Buy.
But what about the new model being so close, i just dont want to regret the buy.
No one knows about any new models. Significant upgrade cycles for Macs has historically been on the order of every year or so. There is no guarantee that will continue though.
"so close" is not significant for a computer that will serve you well for several years.
If you decide to buy from Apple they have a 14 day, no questions asked return policy. Should you buy a new Mac and another one comes out during that short period, you can return it for a full refund and buy the latest.
There's nothing wrong with using your existing computer. Replace it when it no longer does what you need it to do. If that happens to be now, you have your answer.

  • Should I buy an iMac or MacBook Pro?

I can afford both the iMac or the MacBook Pro. Either way I'll buy AppleCare. I'll be using it to browse the web, working on Office and playing some Steam games(Left 4 Dead 2,Portal 2,Counter Strike GO). I don't care about the optical drive. Which one should I buy?

Well if you already own an Air then but the iMac. That is if you don't mind always being tied to a desk to play those games.
Then use the Air for surfing and the like from anywhere in your home/office.

  • Should I buy an Imac now or wait for update late 2014

I'm thinking of getting an Imac 27" (i7 , 8ram, 3tb fusion drive and 780 gcard) "fully loaded"
Il be using it for FCX and some photoshop. Burning blu rays
Beginner editing, (home movies,) and plan on taking some classes in future and do bigger editing projects.
should I pull the trigger and buy this imac, or wait for the update in mid to late 2014???
Thanks ahead of time to anyone taking the time to responding :)

if you need a new one now, get one.  If you can wait, then wait.  No matter what, it will be soon "outdated" anyway.  Also, no one knows when a new mac will be released until apple say so.  anything else is speculation.

  • Should I buy a iMac or Mac Pro

    Hi all
I am looking to buy a new Mac.
My main purpose will be for developing apps both for Mac ios and running Parallels Desktop to use windows.
I first thought to buy the Mac Pro as it everything I am looking for. If I buy a Mac Pro then I would also have to buy the 27' Thunderbolt Display. When I did my research on the Thunderbolt display I almost got a heart attack when I saw the price.
So then I went and checked the iMac to see it specs and was let down when I saw it only has an i5. Though the price would be much lighter on my pocket.
So now I am torn between buying the iMac or the Mac Pro.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Sincerely
    The one who can't choose

No, that's not correct. There is absolutely no reason you have to buy the Thunderbolt Display if you buy a Mac Pro. You can choose from many monitors.
The Mac Pro connects to monitors through any of its Thunderbolt ports. But you must realize that on a Mac, every Thunderbolt port is the same as the Mini DisplayPort industry standard video connection. You can therefore buy any DisplayPort monitor on the market and plug it in.
For example, I bought a nice NEC monitor and I can plug it into the Thunderbolt port on my Mac Pro or MacBook Pro, using a $5 Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.
But there are other questions about your post. lllaass has a good question: How do you plan to use your Mac? Because a Mac Pro is too much computer for most users. It's for high end users. You said you had a heart attack at the price of the Apple Thunderbolt Display. But the Thunderbolt Display is only a mid-range price for a professional monitor. Many professional monitors cost between $1000-2000. If you are having a heart attack over the Thunderbolt display price, why aren't you having one over the Mac Pro price?
Following that, if you are worried about the i5 in an iMac, why not just customize the iMac order to get an i7 instead? It's an option for all iMacs except the cheapest one, and it would be much less expensive than a Mac Pro plus any good monitor.

  • Should I buy 24" imac or macbook pro

    Hello,
With all the problems I am reading about the 24" imac, should I get a macbook pro instead?
Is the imac that much faster for window games?
    Thanks
    Frank

Firstly you must consider that there are substantial differences between a Desktop and a Laptop computer that have to be considered.
Secondly I would not and have not personally chosen an Apple computer on the strength of how and what quality I could get for playing Windows Games. I bought my iMac for my real intended use as a tool for my hobby of photography.
Yes you can play windows games albeit through an installation of Windows xp on your Apple computer but you have to know what you are doing as you may need additional driver software for the type of graphics card used in the Mac to run in the other environment i.e. Windows.
If you want only really want to play windows games then really you should buy a windows based computer and save the hassel of trying to build one inside an Apple computer.

  • Should I buy an iMac or a Mac mini?

HI everyone! Can't decide which one to purchase! I quite like the idea of the portability of the Mac mini and would probably use it alot with my tv for entertainment, but was looking to get the new mid range model for additional space, better specs etc. But the price would be edging near iMac territor, plus I'd probably also need a new monitor for the Mac mini. Just wondering how people have found there experiences with the Mac mini, would they recommend it or just recommend on iMac instead? Especially since the price differenice not bring too different including the external monitor Just to note, Ive heard about the lack of being able to modify the new Mac minis, this isent a problem for me as I'm not big into tech and wouldnt even know where to start on doing something like that!   thanks in advane for your advice!

I’m a recent iMac-to-mini convert. I’ve had two iMacs since 2006. Both served me well, but I use my computer mostly for editing text, and when the ultrawide monitors came out, I realised that having two documents or windows open side by side would be very handy for me. So I bought one, used it with my iMac until the new minis arrived, and then bought the mid-range i5 with a 256 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM (needed for running Windows in a virtual machine). A big improvement from my old (2009) iMac. If you don’t need higher-range graphics or four cores, a mini will be fine. You can pick and choose the size and quality of monitor that best suits your needs and budget. The upgradeability of the new minis isn’t great, but then neither is it for the iMacs. I liked my iMacs, but I will never buy another.

  • Should i buy this Imac G5

its on ebay, here the link
advertises, 20"screen, 2.1Ghz processor, isight, 1.5Gb Ram, 250GB Hard drive, elgato eyetv for digital freeview and MS office for mac.
I know the advertisement leaves alot to be desired, but say i collect and pay there given the mac is sound. Do you think its worth me paying upwards of 1000 GBP approx $1750 US for this 2nd hand. Does the spec look plausible for 2 months old?

    maty_poo,
    Maybe.
I bought my Power Mac on eBay for about 55% of the price of a new one. It was an easy transaction and I am very satisfied.
    My suggestions:
    1. Spend some time "watching" machines that you are interested in to get a feel for how much they are selling for. "Some time" in my case was about 3 weeks.
    2. Pay attention to the seller's "reputation". Be sure to read every negative review carefully. My seller had a 98% postive rating so I felt comfortable.
    3. Pay only with a credit card. American Express is the best at defending your interests.
    4. Insist that the seller insure the shipment. Insist that the seller ships via a trusted (e.g., DHL, FedEx) method.
    5. Don't get caught up in the excitement of the auction. Know your maximum bid before making your first one. If you lose to a higher bidder, then so be it.

  • Deciding on what should I buy!

I'm a PC user and I'm planning on upgrading to a Mac system that I can run both Windows 8.1 and Mac. But before I decide I need to know a bit of compatibility. I have a 21 inch Dell touch screen that I would like continue using it if I can.  To determine my decision I have three questions to make my decision and here is where I would need help.
    1. Should I buy a Mac Mini or Mac Mini Server or should I buy a iMac instead of a Mac Mini?
    3. Will I be able to use the touch screen in the Mac OS?
    3. Will I have to replace my keyboard or Mouse with an Apple Mouse and keyboard to work with Windows and Mac?
    Message was edited by: giosejo

FWIW, all the Mini Server gets you for the additional
money is a second internal HDD and and the Server app
preinstalled over the upper end non-server version.  Unless
you really want the second internal drive, I would not get it.
I personally use virtual machines using Parallels Desktop
    for WindowsXP, Windows7, and Windows8.1.  I
however don't need any touchscreen as all my Windows
applications are desktop based.  Using virtual machines
is pretty much running Windows in an application window
    on the Mac.
If you do any hard core gaming, or perhaps even midlevel
gaming, the Mini in any flavor may not be right for you since
it only has the Intel HD4000 integrated graphics.

  • To buy an iMac?

Hi...sorry i know that this is the wrong place to post this kinda question. but I dont know where to post it so I decided to post it here.
I already have a laptop which is a macbook pro as said below. But I'm thinking of buying another computer and I was thinking of buying an iMac (24 inch) or the Mac Pro. I only do basic stuff but I also so do some video editing and like making videos (short movies, etc.) I will probably use my student load to buy this computer because I used all my money to buy my current macbook pro.
so my question is, should I buy and iMac or a Mac Pro? because I dont have any idea what to buy right now. and would the Mac Pro be much faster in burning DVDs than the iMac? do I need a Mac Pro if I'm only doing basic stuff except for video editing and mild photoshop.
    Pls reply.thanks.

    Joyce,
I assume that you have a Macbook Pro with 1 GB of RAM right now. Correct?
Given your reported usage, upgrading this to 2 GBs, by installing a single 1 GB DIMM (module), will provide the best boost in performance.
This would not affect the speed of your processor (2.16 GHz), but it will make your computer faster overall by allowing it to work more efficiently, in more situations. Also, it would allow previously-used applications to launch much faster (by "previously-used," I mean applications that you have run, but subsequently quit, since your last start or restart).
If you already have 2 GBs of RAM, you already have the optimum amount.
You can use your Macbook Pro in "clamshell" mode (with the display closed) while connected to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse, or you can use your Macbook Pro's display in conjunction with the external display. You can choose to "mirror" your MBP's display on the external, with both displays showing the same thing, or you can use the "Extended Desktop" mode, where one (either) display acts as an extension of the other. In this mode, both displays can be driven at their respective "native" resolution. When "mirroring," both displays must be set to the same resolution, up to the maximum resolution of the lesser of the two.
The burner in the MBP is not the fastest on the market, but it is nevertheless pretty fast. What issues are you having?
(I'm betting that you are using iMovie to burn short videos to DVD, and the process is taking too long for your comfort. We can fix that.)
    Scott
    P.S. For RAM, look here
EDIT: I just noticed you mention "1st gen." in your last post. If this is the case, you probably have 1 GB of RAM in a "2 X 512 MB" configuration. If so, or if you have less than 1 GB right now, you need this "kit." -s

  • It seems that my Office 2008 is incompatible with the Yosemite OS that my friend just installed on my iMac. My Word no longer works. Also, I can't access messages on Entourage. What version of Office should I buy?

My friend installed OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac. Since then, I can barely use my Miocrsoft Word 2008.  The spinning pinwheel, things freezing up, template and formatting trouble, and I can't get any Entourage messages more than a year old, which is a disaster.  I read that Yosemite won't support Word 2008. Remove Office 2008 for Mac using Microsoft deinstall procedure. Reinstall Office 2008 for Mac.  If there are updates, apply them. Using Disk Utility, verify/repair permissions on your boot drive.

  • Should I buy a new MBPr 15 or stay on iMac 2011?

The thing  is, that I am not really sure, should I buy this machine or not, because actually I am a film-maker and currently I have an iMac (2011), and looks like I will work in the field in the future. So I am considering of buying a base MacBook Pro Retina 15, which is with i7 2.7GHz, 16GB of memory, 512 flash storage + Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5.
And here is my iMac tech specs: i7 3.4GHz, 8GB of memory, 1TB 7200rpm hard drive + AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1024Mb.
Also, I am going do a lot of pretty heavy video-editing (Premiere, After Effects) on the notebook, because I am going to sell my iMac. Well, if buying the Macbook makes sense.
So the question is, will it make a big difference in speed of rendrering, overall quality of work progress, and editing itself. Also, I am interested in Photoshop, if you, guys, worked in photoshop (photographers or web-designers) on this machine please leave a reply about how it goes there, I mean, is there any lags or retina-display problems, because I am also planning to work in all of Adobe Software.
Also, sorry for my english, this is not my native language, and sorry if this topic is not in the right place. Peace!

You will find that the relative performance of the two units will be very similar.  see the attached bench test scores:
    http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
Note that with the retina, your storage will be significantly less. Whether the resolution of the retina is worth the premium you have to decide.
Though I an not an Adobe user, I would think that the retina with SSD as well as 16 GB RAM should handle those applications without any difficulty.
    Ciao.
