Should I buy an Sony ZU1 HD Camcorder

The first TV station I worked for in 1989 (WEAR-TV3 in Pensacola) used 2inch tape to air their commercials and I learned to edit on 1" machines. Needless to say I've seen a lot of changes in my career.
I've feel like it constantly necessary to re-learn what I do and how I do it. However, now that HD is on the horizon, I am considering buying the Sony ZU1 and using FCP5 to edit my new documentary. I need to make a decision soon as I will begin primary shooting September 28th.
I have several questions about the transition to HD.
Is it possible to combine HD and non-HD footage on the same timeline?
Do I need an HD monitor or can I live with my current monitors?
What about still graphics? What sort of dpi and pixel ratios do I need?
How about After Effects. What are my composition settings and my output settings?
There is a possibility to taking the documentary to DVD for sale. Can it be produced on DVD in Hi-def and if not how do I bump it to DV?
I can't even see the number of possible traps and pitfalls to shooting and editing in Hi-Def. Perhaps this is too soon for a novice like me. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks for any input.
P.S. If I don't buy the ZU1 what camera would you guys recommend in the under $5,000 range.

Hello Michelle from downriver of you on the Indiana side.
I started my broadcast career about the same time, and can even lay claim to having made edits on the old RCA quad machines.
I've just purchased a Z1 at my university and we're just now wading through many of your questions etc. I can help you with a couple of your questions at least.
We are, at least initially, very pleased with the image quality of the Z1. I regularly work with a 13 time national Emmy winner who owns both the Z1 and an 8 year old HDCAM camera, and he is blown away at the quality of the Z1 vs. what you pay for it.
You don't have to have an external HD monitor, though it is nice. If you do want to monitor at HD reolution your desktop monitor will have to capable of that resolution.
It's starting to look like we'll be doing all of our shooting in HDV, then capturing using the on-the-fly down convert to wide-screen DV - the idea being that until a viable distribution method for set-top boxes is available, we'll continue to distribute NTSC DVD's we author in DVDSP. If a client wants the HD version at a later date, we'll quote them a price to re-master using the original footage.
A big issue you'll have to face is hard drive storage and speed should you decide to upconvert your HDV to an intermediate codec or better, for compositing. There is at least one excellent article available on the LAFCPUG web site:
http://www.lafcpug.org/Tutorials/basic_hdvxdv.html
This might help a little.

  • Should I buy an HD or SD camcorder?

I have an iMac G5 with Leopard (non-intel) - so I know that I can't get the HD video onto the machine (I want to move towards flash or HDD rather than tape) but I'm wondering if I should buy an HD camera that also records in SD (any suggestions?) so that I can use it now and also take advantage of having the Hi-Def capability when I upgrade to a newer computer.

Don't forget that when you upgrade to a new computer you will also need a Blu-ray DVD Burner and Blu-ray Player which will probably cost nearly as much as the computer!
Add to that discs that cost more than 20 times as much as a normal DVD !
That is the current situation ....... hopefully prices will drop, but over here in the UK the take-up of HDTV is very slow and it's only when the general public buy in vast quantities that we will see significant price reductions.
The problem is that standard TV (over here) is so good, very few people (other than gadget fanatics) are interested.

  • Should I buy Sony HD?

I have a chance to buy a Sony HDR HC3 camera for a good price. I am fairly new to FCP. When I was in school, we always brought in footage via fire wire and Canon cameras. I know that this new Sony uses USB, and I am supposing that is fine to download to my G4 Powerbook. The fellow who is selling it did some research and said it was fine to import into IMovie - but he is not sure about FCP. I wonder if this camera will create .dv's - or .mov's - or something that would be easily imported to FCP.

This camera has HDV/DV FireWire, as well as HDMI out ports.
You can capture by firewire to FCP.
(one thing missing is mic input, you have to use Sony mics attached to camera)
There's also a super-slow recording mode that plays back three second's worth of video in 12 seconds. (quarter speed)

  • Advice solicited - should i buy this camcorder?

I think I am going to buy a Canon XH A1S camcorder, but before I do I wonder if any Forumista is using it and can tell me how it relates to Final Cut Express?
There are a number of posts about it, but they relate to specific problems, not a general view of the camcorder itself.
I have read a multitude of reviews and they all seem favorable (in some groupings with suspiciously similar effulgent comments) save for one gentleman who said the camcorder was "shoddy" and the front mic holder "wobbly." Too, one reviewer talked about the A1S but referred to working with mini DV tapes, so I am hoping that he is confused and means the XH A1.
How is working with SD tapes and FCE? Good? Should I look elsewhere?
Any comments would be appreciated as I will soon be putting pen to check and submitting a claim for some of that stimulus money that is floating around.
As always, thank you in advance.

Nowhere in this camera's specs does it mention tape. Only an SD card. Am I missing something?
As for AVCHD I remember reading that it must be laboriously converted to the FCE format before it can be edited. Another step!
I m spending more time on research than Sloan-Kettering.
Thanks for the reply, Sasha, and reminding me that you ARE Sasha. I felt uncomfortable calling you Skalicki.
Can anybody out there recommend an AVCHD professional camcorder that works well with FCE and which they use that won't require me to go back to stick-ups?
    Thanks,Sasha.

  • Looking for help getting imovie to recognize sony DCR-SR47 camcorder

Has anyone been able to up load to imovie from sony DCR-SR47 camcorder?

It depends on which camcorder you have.
If it records onto miniDV tape (..or "microMV" tape..) then you definitely need to use FireWire; nothing else will do. Buy one at any electronics store; it's called a FireWire or DV or i.Link cable. It must have a teeny 4-pin connector at one end (..to plug into the camera..) and a larger 6-pin connector at the other end (..to plug into your Mac..)
..unless you have a new MacBook Pro, which needs a slightly different shaped 9-pin FireWire 800 connector instead of the 6-pin connector.
You cannot use a USB connection for tape-based camcorders, even if they have a USB socket ..as that's just for transferring stills, not video.
If your camcorder does NOT shoot onto tape, then you'll need to transfer via USB. That applies for all chip-based and hard-drive based camcorders, and - I think - DVD-based camcorders.
All current AVCHD camcorders use USB.
If in doubt (..but there should be no doubt..) read the camcorder's instruction book. If you can't find the instructions, download them from the manufacturer's website ..almost all instructions are available online.
But if it needs FireWire - if it's a tape-based camcorder - you CANNOT use USB.

Hey, i have an important question. I have seen a bunch of posts here on the forum about lack of juice out of PSU's with certain hardware configs....
I think i have the same problems here, flickering textures in games, when playing games they just quit and im back in windows.... and even sometimes it just hangs.... this is only when playing games or 3D rendering in 3D studio max.
    Here are my system specs.
    ESC K7S6A mainboard (bios version 1.0f )
    AMD Athlon XP 2400+
    512 MB DDR
    WD 40GB/8mb cache (7200rpm)
    WD 80GB/2mb cache (7200rpm)

    Microsoft optical mouse
    PSU 300w
Windows XP Professional Corp. (NL + SP1)

I think that my PSU is not good (correct me if im wrong), what PSU should i buy with my specs? please give me a brand and typenumber...

Is there any way to check if the power supply is definetly causing problems - I just bought am G4MX440 and after installing it (was using 32meg TNT2), game graphics are all screwey
    TO-AOT (blank screen)
Q3 (all i get in the menus is the firey surround 'quake 3')
GTA3 ('bout a hundred tiled menu windows)
After reading many of the posts I assumed it was my power supply, went back to where i bought it (both the pc and the card) to upgrade nah it's the card bring it back.
    P4 1.5 on GA-8IDX
    SONY DVD
    PANASONIC 8*4*32 CD-R/W

    MSI G4MX440-T
    some TV tuner card (dunno)
    directX 8.1 also tried 9
    300W psu
    3.3 - 14A    | 160W combined
    5    - 30A    |
    12  - 15A
These guys are selling all their P4 packages with various G4 and other card with 300W power supplies without issue (or so they say)
so any way to check for sure, will the rails dip significantly?  I be grateful for any suggestions caus if i take it back you know it will sit on a shelf for a a few days b4 they get around to it - and i'm itching to try it out....

  • How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?

How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?
    I have PremierePro-CS5 installed.
This stereo 3D camcorder (Sony HDR-TD10E), output an .MVC (MultiViewCoding) file, coded in H.264 format.
This format is already compatible with Bluray3D stereoscopic format.
    1) But, how to edit the .MVC in Premiere?
    2) What plugin should I use (if exists) for PremiereProCS5?
    3) Cineform Neo3D, can manage the .MVC format? Can convert it to Cineform format file, for import it into Premiere?
    4) What software should I use to convert an .MVC video to an AVCHD H.264 file, and import it into PremierePro CS5 or CS5.5 for editing?
    Thanks!
    Horsepower0171.

Sorry, I am Italian, it is very difficult for me to understand what he says!
I can just read the english text, or follow the actions of a videotutorial!
Thus my question is the same:
    -What software can do that?
-Sony Vegas 10 do the Bluray3D authoring?
-For MVC editing, should I wait for Adobe CS6? Or is it planned an update for CS5.5?

  • Never buy a Sony Ericsson for it's Customer Service ? What do you think ?. Terrible experience. Please advise.

Hi , my name is Jomon Philipose . I am from Bangalore and a victim of poor workmanship and service  of Sony Ericsson C905A. It was not even 6 months that the camera , for which I bought the set showed it's true colours. "Open Lens Cover problem in Sony Ericsson phone". Yeah , just try and put that on Google and see the number of negative matched results for it !!!!!!. Guess should have read the reviews for Sony Ericsson before spending 12000 INR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.It's not only your hard earned money but the free frustration that you get for no fault of your own .. Taking it to the service centre is the only option where they tell you to repair it in 7 days but takes 2 weeks forcing you to buy a new phone if you do not have one. Forget all the re syncronisation and setting that you have to do about it, and think about the responses that you get from the Service Centre , in do not know what language. Caution : If you talk to them for more than hour it's hazardous to your spoken English .
All you get to hear is the recorded tone of "Please wait for 48 hours " Even after you call them after 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
No response to the Work Order complaint (SE311SS211175) what so ever . This is a crazy customer service !!!!!!! . I will definately never buy a Sony Ericsson no matter how good a phone reviews are  . Neither will let anyone whom I know buy it and put in best efforts to awaken them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .
I have logged innumerable complaints at with Legal Feedback , Media Feedback , send an email to [email protected]@support.sonyericsson.com>
Don't believe me ? , well you would have if you had heard the conversation with the Shrishti Services guys who tells me that neither " can they give the phone on time " or " Will they return it to me unrepaired!!!!!!". At one point of time I thought , the phone was Sony Ericsson's intellectual property!!!!.
My phone is under Warranty . I am being told by the Sony Service Contact Centre guys over and again that my phone is not liable to change WO Number : SE311SS211175 old Work order : Se311SS210347. Request number for the replacement of the product
    90599712.
They tell me I cannot speak to the escalations  manager . Neither can I escalate it .
Is it  that all I have to do is keep on waiting without my phone ?. It's been the 17 th Day now . I am sure it is going to take a lot more time . They shamelessly said 8 more working days yesterday lol!!!!!
I am definitely seeking help from the Consumer Court of India  .
Guys ,lucky you if you had not to face the Customer Service Centre especially in India ,  or else may God help you .
I really want to hear from the people who actually think there job is "Customer Care" and they are been paid for it coz I am still without a phone.

If you think you are lucky go ahead and buy it,maybe by this time you could have already bought it  coz God forbid something happens to it, you do not have a  good customer service to support it.  After getting my phone back , not surprisingly again for the 4 th time the camera stopped working . It's a faulty product altogether and I do not want to go through the pains again to go through them . They are supposed to check the set again within 90 days from the time , the repair was carried out. But you know what I have given up  on them as my work does not allow me to keep my phone away for a long time .
It would be a real pain in the place you know where .  All my research for buying a good phone at competitive price went straight into the gutters .
. I would rather buy a new phone than going through the same process again for the 4 th time. And that would not be a Sony Ericsson for sure. They simply wouldnt agree that it is a faulty set and give me all kinds of stupid excuses like your phone has been used for 11 months and all . I have a question for them do you really spend thousaands for a just a phone only for the features or the peace of mind as well. Cause this one has definitely not brought peace to me . I mean c'mon 4 th time, same problem!!!!!!!

  • I have iMovie 08.  Should I buy imovies 11

I am just starting to try to use imovie8 with absolutely no success, nothing works.  Should I buy iMovie 11? Or would that on,y create even more difficulties?

as long as you don't tell us WHAT doesn't work, recommendations make no sense.
iM11 is basicly the same as vers08, but now fully functional for hobbyists needs such as slow-mo, green-screen, themes etc.
    keep in mind:
iMovie is meant for camcorder imports - no 'edits all movin' pictures' ...

  • Sony ZU1 Downconvert

I know this should be simple so I appreciate the help. I just purchased a Sony ZU1. I shot in HDV and I want to downconvert to DV with a letterbox format.
Am I correct that my capture and sequence presets and should be DVNTSC 48 kHz.

Hmmm. I definetly need to test this.
But I thought in a 4:3 anamorphic video the image uses more vertical lines of resolution. When you play that anamorphic DVD back the DVD player squishes the image to correct the aspect ratio and fills in the rest of the black bars on the top and bottom. When you play it on a 16:9 TV it fills the screen, no bars top/bottom or sides.
But the image should not look distorted in FCP, assuming all the settings (FCP and Camera) are correct.

Pos, what an enumeration ! I think that your point of view is slightly biased, and that some "statements" need a bit more explanation.
Mac OS X definitely looks great (we're talking about the graphical user interface - after all, when browsing Microsoft's website, you could very well say that Windows looks great and because it works as it should and doesn't get in your way like Windows often does, it feels great to use this system.
It is UNIX-based, which means it relies on a well-known, reliable foundation (UNIX). The core of the system, Darwin (which is basically Mac OS X w/out all the user interface and bundled applications), is Open Source, which means that its source code is available to anyone, and can therefore be thoroughly analyzed and tested by any knowledgeable person who wants to - thus helping detecting issues (or bugs, if you prefer) and fixing them, which results in greater reliability and security for OS X.
I disagree with No hacking and Bulletproof and stealth security : it isn't entirely accurate, and can be misleading. Mac OS X is not hacker-proof : it can be hacked, just like any other operating system, in many ways. However, it does inculde a software firewall which has a good reputation, and offers an option called "Sealth Mode", which will make your Mac invisible to hackers. It should be enough to protect you from many threats, and if you use a router to connect to the internet, it probably has a (hardware) firewall of its own.
On the other hand, Mac OS X is definitely more secure than Windows. It has less security holes, and since Macs don't run Windows applications (and Windows PCs don't run Mac apps), and that viruses are nothing else than very compact applications, a Mac cannot be affected by Windows viruses and worms. There are some viruses targeting previous versions of the MacOS, but Mac OS X is an all-knew operating system and isn't affected by them (as long as you don't run OS 9 through Classic - but that's only necessary if you want to use old Mac apps, and as a switcher you are unlikely to do so). Viruses, and pieces of malicious software targeting OS X are very rare, and often remain a "proof of concept" ...
Any new Mac comes with a lot of bundled software, including word processing applications (such as AppleWorks, which is kind of outdated now - but many other are available, including Microsoft Office:mac 2004 and a version of OpenOffice.org) and the iLife suite :
    iTunes is a well-known application which is also available for Windows;
    iPhoto is an app to manage your photo library, it isn't great, but isn't bad either and is well integrated with the other iApps;
GarageBand allows you to make or record your own music, with your keyboard (with software instruments, it's not very practical) or external instruments connected via USB or FireWire
    [Warning : this is an application that uses a lot of resources, if you want to run it on a Mini, you might need more than the standard 512 Megabytes of RAM for smooth operation, and a more powerful Macintosh such as the iMac would definitely be a plus];
iMovie HD can edit homemade movies (you need a digital camcorder, and to store the video on your Mac, you'll need a large hard disk usch as an external FireWire one) : you can add transitions, rearrange the order of scenes, add text, chapters, etc.
    [in order to edit HD -stands for High Definition - video, you'll need an HD digital camcorder, and probably more processing power than a Mini can offer];
iDVD, which will be of no help to watch DVDs (there is an application called DVD Player that will do this), but create your own DVDs, with chapters, etc.
[if you want to burn these DVDs to disc, you must order your Mac with a Superdrive or add an external FireWire or USB DVD burner].
Apart from the iLife suite, Mac OS X comes with other apps, including Mail (an email client like Outlook Express - just a lot nicer), Safari (a web browser, note that Firefox is also available for the Mac), iSync to synchronize your cell phone or PDA, and many others.
Coming from the Windows world, I'd say that the Mac platform can do almost everything the Windows platform can, often better. The area where the Mac is inferior to the Windows PC is gaming (a Mac is capable of running games, but Mac versions of games often come long after the PC version and aren't as nice).
If you choose the Mac, then the Mini is a good, relatively unexpensive Mac, which is very capable and will browse the web, manage you photos and your music well. The iMac is more expensive, but will offer a lot more power, and a Media Center-like application called Front Row (but it's easier to use than on the PC). In both cases, I think everyone would agree to say that it is wise to wait for Steve Job's keynote at the Macworld Expo (on January 10, 9 A.M. PST) : new products are likely to be announced, and even if the new "Macintels" (Mac with Intel processors, like on the PC) aren't released, iLife '06 should be bundled with every new Mac after the Expo (otherwise you'd get iLife '05 and will have to pay if you want to get the latest - the current version is great but if you can get the new version for "free", it won't hurt, will it ?).
    Mac mini | 1.25 Ghz G4 | 1 GB RAM | 40 GB HDD | AirPort Extreme   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   External 250 GB LaCie HDD | LaCie FW DVD-RW DL 16x | 20 GB iPod w/Color Display

  • What is the difference between regular Aperture software and the app? If I were to buy an app or a software as a hobbyist, what should I buy??? Little confused between the two...Please advise.

    Dear All,
I am a newbie to MAC world. Being an ex-PC guy, I am used to CDs and traditional software. I want to buy Aperture as my main photo editing software. I have been using DXO and Photoshop in the past. I downloaded Apeture trial version and I am comfortable with it. If I were to buy it, should I buy an app or traditional software CD. I edit approx. 4-5 pictures a day, just for personal use though. Please advise.
    Regards,
    Gurpreet.

That's a function of your Credit Card not of the Software
But you're right, I was vague. Whether you buy from the App Store or the Disk makes no difference to the functionality of the software. It's the same.
    Regards
    TD

  • Do Not Buy From Sony

Do not buy from Sony if you work. After 3 delivery attempts FedEx is required by Sony to ship it back to them. You CANNOT go to a FedEx facility to pick it up. After 5 phone calls with Sony support no one was willing to help me. I don't know how people who WORK buy things from this company. I will never buy anything from them ever again and I am canceling my Sony credit card. Thanks for nothing Sony.

  • IMovie '09 Won't Import HD Content from Sony HDR-SR11 Camcorder

    Hi,
iMovie stopped importing HD content from Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder. It only recognizes the standard definition content in the preview thumbnails. Previously this used to work with both a FireWire cable and a Mini USB. All of a sudden it doesn't import HD clips. There's no plugin failure either, because I reinstalled iMovie '09.
    System Specifications:
    Intel iMac 20" (Late 2008)
    Intel Core 2 Duo@ 2.4 GHz.
    4 GB RAM
    Snow Leopard (10.6.4)
    Thanks!

With this camera you must erase the SD clips from the camera before you can import the HD clips.

  • It seems that my Office 2008 is incompatible with the Yosemite OS that my friend just installed on my iMac. My Word no longer works. Also, I can't access messages on Entourage. What version of Office should I buy?

My friend installed OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac. Since then, I can barely use my Miocrsoft Word 2008.  The spinning pinwheel, things freezing up, template and formatting trouble, and I can't get any Entourage messages more than a year old, which is a disaster.  I read that Yosemite won't support Word 2008. What Microsoft Update should I buy, and will that fix my problems?  I am desperate. Thank you in advance for your help.  Here is the result I got from EtreCheck.
